NJ’s Solar Resurrection NEW JERSEY--- The tremendous savings intrigue of solar just became that much more appealing. Gov. Christie signed bill S-1925/A-2966 into law that will stimulate the solar market in New Jersey and raise the value of Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs). Which means, what was previously a wise investment is now an income producing no-brainer. The booming SRECs market is what has made ‘going solar’ a popular option for a number of years. However, once stakeholders saw the edge of the cliff early in 2011, the analysts, law-makers and government knew an intervention was necessary. The objective was to create a sustainable market. The key word being sustainable. Governor Christie addressed the size of the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) which had the number of megawatt-hours required in Energy Years 2013 to 2016 substantially lower than the current market activity. The original legislation was written at a time when solar panel prices were 60 percent higher, meaning that the hurdle for investment was very different. Therefore when they examined SREC Spectrum News October 2012

pricing and simulated model processes, a consensus for an SREC value in the $300 range was reached. Policies were also established that allow for long term contracts in order to make solar more attractive to financial institutions, which look for a stable revenue stream from SRECS in order to minimize risk. With the prices of solar panels down by more than 60% we no longer needed

of solar obligations stays constant with overall energy demand. Under the new law utilities will be required to obtain 2.05% of their electricity sales from solar by 2014 – a mandate that will be ramped up on a tiered basis to 4.1% by 2028. According to Gov. Christie’s office the law will save ratepayers an estimated $1.076 billion over the next 15 years.

When signing the bill the governor was quoted saying, “Since my time running for office, I made it clear that my administration would be unrivaled in our aggressive support for the development of renewable sources of energy in New Jersey. Renewable energy not only helps meet our goals of increasing sustainability and protecting the environment, but can be an engine for economic growth and the creation of good-paying jobs for the people of our state.” New Jersey Governor Christie seen here discussing the Solar ‘Resurrection Bill’

SREC values in the $600 range, which made the value proposition for the policy changes a lot more attractive. New Jersey’s RPS will go from a fixed megawatt requirement each year, to a percentage of overall energy usage in New Jersey. This ensures that the level

It is a mouthful for those already with solar and those interested in solar for their homes. A rise in SREC prices will once again generate a robust market place here in New Jersey that will not only pay for the costs of the system itself for those seeking ownership, but it was also create revenue opportunities for specific leasing arrangements and ownership respectively.

A LETTER FROM DAN EUBANK The presidential election is just weeks away and the candidates will be preparing to answer questions about their energy plans. Before we get to rate their answers like judges on American Idol, lets me ask you that very question -- What is your energy plan? Perhaps you’re under the impression that you don’t have one. If you have not thought about it then you have already subscribed to the utility’s plan for you. The utility company wants you to live short-sighted, they want to monopolize your electric needs and keep you completely dependent on them! If you don’t have an energy plan you are by default choosing option 1 -- doing nothing. As prices rise, your bill will go up and up without any input from you. That doesn’t seem fair, does it? Spectrum gives you the chance to choose a plan that’s right for you. Arthur Brooks from Lumberton chose option 2. He decided not to succumb to whatever was pushed on to him. As a result we helped him save $150 a month from day one! Plus, once his system is paid off (in a few short years), he will never have to pay for electricity from the utility again! PJ Vescovi elected option 3, to lease his system. His plan was to save $85 a month by switching to solar. He also locked in his rate for 20 years so as the electric costs rise he just saves more and more! Twenty years from now when his lease is up, he will own the system and never pay for electricity again! You have options! 1. Do Nothing 2. Brook’s Ownership Purchase 3. PJ’s Lease We can help you choose a plan that is right for you. Go to our website at SolarBySpectrum.com or call (609) 261-0760 today and request your FREE Solar Evaluation!
