Axis Dance Company Facility Axis Dance Company “changes the face of dance and disability with their ability to overcome adversity. Currently, the public only sees the height of the dancers’ careers when in reality it is much more of a struggle. This design takes the public on a journey to tell the stories of the dancers who are a part of Axis. Entering seven feet below grade, the public experiences the hardships that the dancers do as they descend below the building. With every part being handicap accessible, the main form of circulation, ramps, wraps around every piece of program. Through the use of fogged glazing, the inhabitants traveling up and along the path of circulation, are given a clue of movement and progress as they ascend. Once they reach the top the public and dancers are united in the performance hall where the dancers are truly at the height of their careers.

North Adams Manufacturing/Education Campus Feeling the power struggle between industrial might and Mother Nature, it only seems right to show how a balance between the two once made North Adams an influential industrial town while recognizing the new artistic culture of the city. Positioned between the railroad and the Hoosic River, the site design reflects their interaction. A raised walkway connects the site to both the manufacturing building and educational building as well as the public areas. This walkway traverses through openings in the manufacturing buildings allowing the public to be able to travel through and view into that environment. The majority of the walkway is riddled with sculptures ranging in scale to allow the public to experience the art from both the ground and raised level. The walkway creates an opportunity for the community to understand how manufacturing and art have become intertwined as North Adams grows today.

Children’s Book Museum A child’s imagination is something not many people can comprehend once they become adults. The raw imagination that takes kids to a new world is unlike anything else. Drawing inspiration from “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak, the design captures that same sense of imagination represented in the book with a hard exterior surrounding a wild interior. Once the occupants pass through the opening on the corner of Newbury and Dartmouth Street, the garden is revealed, giving them a glimpse into a “child’s world”. Totally different from the rest of the surrounding area of Boston, the garden and the walls around it perfectly represent “Where the Wild Things Are”.

Reading Pavilion The people who come from Newbury and the Copley Square T station, along with the neighboring young families in the Back Bay area of Boston, need a place to stop and rest. The design redirects people into the site with the use of walls positioned in a spiral, pointing out towards the intersection of Newbury and Dartmouth street. The opening of each individual wall varies, in order to create different thresholds. These range from allowing people to pass through, to only getting a glimpse into the site. The walls themselves create spaces within for people to sit, read, and relax. By providing shade without enclosing the space with a roof, the design creates a free and open gathering area.

Urban Ecological Center This design creates a transition space from the urban environment of a significant intersection in Boston, MA to a more organic, park setting of the Chestnut Hill Reservoir. By drawing people up off of the sidewalks and inviting them into the site, a conversation between the two elements is sparked. Pushing the idea of people getting out into nature, the design not only educates the public to respect and enjoy nature, but also it acts as the stepping stone between the two domains.
