Joshua Manley-lee

Witnessing the death of both Joshua’s parents humbled him in a tremendous way and placed me in a position where my story and accomplishments can influence the entire world. After his acceptance into the prestigious Morehouse College,Joshua concluded my freshmen year with a 3.81 grade point average, “freshman of the year” award, and “overcoming obstacles” award presented by the Shyne Awards. Along with these accomplishments came a memorable season with the Morehouse Track & Field and Cross Country team. They won the SIAC Conference Championship in Track & Field as well as Cross Country. Joshua represents not only the city of Pittsburgh but also every African American youth across the nation who has experienced a life-changing event and strives to become better than their situation. He gives to his community and countless youth across the world hope with every action he takes. Jeremy Cobbs-hart

In the field of science (specifically biomedical research) Jeremy’s research has helped determine how stress affects the brain rats which can in turn (with more research) help determine how stress affects the human brain. By doing this, in future studies the research he is working on will continue to impact the world of science even if only by a small amount. Stress related diseases and disorders can hopefully be mapped out a marking technique that was used in his research which was taught to him by his lab instructor. However, human testing is illegal and to use the technique mentioned above the brain must be cut into several slices before the technique can be applied. Jeremy has helped cleaning up the campus of Clark Atlanta University and the surrounding area and by being help others take initiative to keep the campus and surrounding areas clean and not just leave the job to the facility workers alone. Tutoring the middle school students in their homework will help them learn abilities and techniques to en hance their studying in middle school but hopefully high school and beyond. By helping the middle school students with their homework Jeremy has also helped to make sure that they do not give up when the work gets tough and he believes that the students he tutored will make their families proud by being successful in their classes and bringing home better grades. The impact created by tutoring these middle school children will help them tutor other middle school children with the techniques that were taught to them. By doing this, more educationally qualified students for high school will be prepared.

Kirstin kearns

"Without struggle, there is no progress " -(Frederick Douglass). Kirstin Kearns upholds this quote through out my life to keep me focused . At a young age Kirstin learned to turn her struggles into a story full of accomplishments. Where she stands today is the path she has paved on her own without help. Through hard work and dedication she has received numerous academic scholarships to attend college. As a student at Clark Atlanta University she holds a position as a residential assistant, which is an accomplishment on its on. She uses her role to inspire and motivate young girls to face their fears and go after their dreams. When she visits her hometown, Philadelphia, she takes the time to speak with high school seniors. She listens to the struggles those students face and can relate. Kirstin has impacted the student body to unite and push forward regardless of the circumstance set for most students coming out of urban areas. Furthermore, her biggest accomplishment is the scholarship fund that she is currently creating for her Alma mater, Strawberry Mansion High School located in the heart of North Philadelphia. Kirstin knows the struggle and what it means to be in need, which is why she feels like it is her duty to give back. The scholarship fund will be a stepping stone for the graduating class of 2014 . She believes the scholarship will motivate the community to help our children aim for higher education.

Melody Thomas

When referring to accomplishments, Melody feels that it is not about quantity but quality instead. She feels that her accomplishments are measured by how they impact her work ethic and community. To her it is too often that we see our young black men and women attending college off of athletic scholarships and not academic. Therefore, she is proud to attend Clark Atlanta University on the Dean’s academic scholarship. She feels that we all have talents, which can benefit the community, hers is her brain. It is also her belief that when it comes to success, it is harder to stay at the top once you make it up. Therefore, she is determined to do her best in all of her classes so that she can maintain her scholarship. scholarshi Melody was recognized as Outstanding Freshman of the Dual Degree Engineering Program. Receiving such recognition as a freshman this provided her with the motivation to continue to excel throughout her matriculation. With there being few African-Americans and even fewer females in the sciences, she feels that she is an example for the community that one is not limited to what he/she is surrounded by. Melody was recently accepted into the Summer Undergraduate Research Engineering/Science Program at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She also has plans to transfer to GaTech, so she feels that as a participant of the program she will be better prepared for when she becomes a Yellow Jacket of the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Donnell Williamson Tytiana Reeves Tytiana Reeves-Payne is a Sophomore, Political Science major at Clark Atlanta University. She has proven that she has what it takes to succeed. Throughout her matriculation at Clark Atlanta, she has been involved in a multitude of campus organizations such as, CAU's Mock Trial Team, Political Science Association, and Pre-Law Society, holding executive positions in both Political Science Association and the Pre-Law Society. Lynesia Taylor

Lynesia Taylor is a mathematics major from Kansas City, MO. Lynesia is a Spelman STEM Scholar as well as a Spelman Math Research and Mentorship Program Scholar. Lynesia has done research in Elliptic Curve Cryptography at Texas A&M University, which is the study of breaking cryptosystems using elliptic curves. She currently works in the Spelman College Mathematics Laboratory where she tutors AUC students in mathematics. Helping others in mathematics is one of Lynesia’s passions. Lynesia feels that being able to do mathematics is just as important as being able to read and write. The tools used in executing a math problem are similar to how one would execute a “real life” problem. Math is more than just equations and theories. Math is a course that teaches problem solving, logic, and reasoning. Lynesia feels that the lack of these tools is a problem in our community and she plans to become part of the solution. In the fall, Lynesia and other mathematics majors at Spelman College plan to implement a “Math Fun Day” in middle schools in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. This program will not only inform students on the importance of mathematics but also show the fun in mathematics. After graduating from Spelman College Lynesia plans to obtain a PhD in applied mathematics. Lynesia strongly believes that "black girls can do math too, so don't underestimate us". Lynesia is a mentor and a role model. She encourages, helps, nurtures, and motivates her students to develop their passion and break barriers. Lynesia shows her students that it is okay to be a smart African American woman in the sciences. Lynesia feels that being able to do mathematics is a gift and therefore she should share her gift with others.
