Little Warrior An intravenous therapy solution for children undergoing chemotherapy.

The Little Warrior intravenous therapy vest frees children from being tethered to an IV pole. The design is similar to other wearable products that children use such as backpacks and sports equipment. The vest also gives a sense of empowerment. When undergoing treatment an LED strip glows, it feels like it is recharging the superhero vest. This project was done with students from Hong Kong Polytechnic, the Lady Pao Children’s Cancer Hospital and Philips Design HK. The Philips Design Group granted Little Warrior with the Philips Design Award in 2008. Watch the Demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0abxZLo_qg

The Ripple A family communication device for the connected family of the future. This phone primarily focuses on the communication within the family while paying attention to a mothers needs. In order to better link the family, their schedules and their problems, a cell phone "blog" for the users is created. The phone is made of translucent material and glows on all sides. A unique texture is also applied to help with the "feeling around" that so many women do to find their phones. This texture contains a divot on the back of the phone that also serves as an inductive charging port. This concept was submitted as “The Ripple” with my teammate Aimee Franco into the 2009 LG Design the Future Competition. The user interface flow for the blogging and calendar feature won honorable mention. See the winners here: http://www.crowdspring.com/LG/winners

Dusci Cruiser A yacht cruiser concept designed for family boaters.

A yacht cruiser concept designed for family boaters using material treatments not often used in the marine industry that maintain color fastness and cleanablity. The bent tube seating structures are covered in a nylon coated woven material. A thick polyurethane coating with a pearlescent flake is used to protect the cabin deck. The sturdy canopy pillars run from the bow to the stern. The canopy material is a flexible light-blocking nylon that can be retracted or removed. The simplistic throttle is finished in chrome and a multi-coat pearl liquid paint.

Jumper Cables Safe and simple with young female drivers in mind.

Traditional jumper cables portray the notion that the user has to be trained in order to jump a car. This concept takes some of that raw interaction away from the experience. A young woman needing roadside assistance can invite an intruder and often young drivers have never used jumper cables. I discovered if the device is more familiar and less intimidating then the user will be more confident to use it. The housing protects the copper contacts until the lever is pressed. A spring tension holds the contact onto the battery terminal and compressing it requires much less effort than traditional cables. Clear positive and negative symbols give direction as to what terminal each cable should be placed.

Embalming Equipment Fume and fluid management for the embalming room.

In the funeral business the customers don’t complain, so to improve the work environment you must look at the process. Every day the embalmer deals with the noxious fumes from body fluids and the chemicals used to preserve the dead. But with fume traps in the flush drain and instrument cart, these can be pulled from the air before the embalmer breathes them. Flush drains collect fluid expelled from the body during the embalming process. Cavity fluids such as post-mortem blood, bile, and noxious embalming chemicals are collected in this basin. This design has a fume trap to prevent these fumes and odors from filling the room. The flush drain is designed to be installed using system hardware already in place. This instrument cart draws the fumes from the body. This is useful when an autopsy has been performed. Fumes are typically drawn through a vent above the embalmer’s head. Instead, this design pulls in harmful fumes before they reach the embalmer’s mouth and nose. Fumes are pushed through the structure of the cart through a hose run into a standard ventilation system typical in most funeral homes.

Volta Handbag Trend relevant for 2009 with chocolatey plum and antiqued metals. This handbag pulls inspiration from Bjork Volta tour costume design and sea creatures. The form mimics a stingray with a pattern piece break up that make the design versatile for many materials. The strap has an encapsulated rib structure that give the bag a “spine” when carrying it. The material treatments shown are calf’s suede and metallic dyed goat leather with a slightly distressed bump texture. Trending for this bag cue off the chocolatey plum colors with antiqued metals. These are current cues for Fall 2009 trends. This trend curve will likely taper off in 2011.

Amana Refrigerators Thirteen designs to express your kitchen personality.

Kitchen design has long been associated with putting a new coat of paint on the walls and installing a monochrome suite of appliances, but the Amana brand believes kitchen design can expand beyond what typically has been done without breaking the bank. These kitchen design options were developed with the consumer in mind. Each design features either a color, pattern or texture that is new and unique. This collection of 13 refrigerators encourages owners to express their individuality through design by adding a touch of personality and customization to their home. Select refrigerators will be produced by Whirlpool Corporation in 2010. See the whole story at: www.amanacolor.com

RPL2 White Imperfect White

We redefine value, find inspiration and comfort from old and found treasures, and celebrate aged, decayed and time-worn imperfect color. In contrast, we see an increasing desire for honest, clean color, as our quest for authenticity and simple product increases. Imperfect white will peak in early 2011 then move to clean white again. White will then begin to lose the strong presence it has had for the past 3 years as a modern tech color. This RPL2 phone concept was designed with the color material and finishes in mind. The body is a clean milky white that is able to transmit light so the phone can glow when ringing. The bottom button pad is a nano-printed fabric texture that is treated in a natural jute color.

RPL2 Red Warm vibrant red that is flashy and cheerful.

Red is either pink or orange cast. The color red convey classic Americana and the red lipstick worn in the recession. The surge of red in the market is also due to Asian product influence. This red on trend for 2011 however has moved from Chinese red to a warm tart red. Red is flashy, vibrant and cheerful. Orange reds will peak in 2011 and move into a washed golden orange. This RPL2 phone concept was designed with the color material and finishes in mind. The body is a deep vibrant red plastic that is able to transmit light so the phone can glow when ringing. The bottom button pad is a nano-printed fabric texture that had been tinged with a warm earthy orange.

RPL2 Taupe Complex neutrals and greys with a tint.

True grey has been replaced with tinted tones of green grey, blue grey and lilac grey. This trend is associated with the dark nostalgia associated with luxury. Think antiqued purples and old pink gems, aged oak that has only gotten more character with time. These colors are neutral, complex and tell a story. Complex greys will peak in 2010 and move into tinted multi-layer true colors. This RPL2 phone concept was designed with the color material and finishes in mind. The body is a mauve tinted grey plastic that is able to transmit light so the phone can glow when ringing. The bottom button pad is a nano-printed fabric texture that had been chalked with a cloudy grey.

2014 Clean and Simple Trends Interfaces, form and coatings convey simplicity. Multi-touch everywhere The rise of the iPhone made the multi-touch technology very popular. Now many devices are using it: MP3 players, GPS devices, laptops,‌ This brings much more intuitive interfaces, making it so easy that even one year old children can use it. In 2009 we will for sure see new multi-touch devices appear. Buttons go away for minimalist designs The trend of minimalist designs doesn’t only apply to products design, but also to web design with grid-based designs getting popular. In every aspect of design, the easeof-use becomes the ultimate goal.

Mono-Material Products designed in monomaterial continued to fill the stands. The designs celebrated the material itself as an important element of expression. Accomplished by hiding joints and expressing the product as one whole. Its a common approach of using one single material with different working methods to create interesting shapes and surfaces. Chunky soft shapes with slightly humorous character could be found in numerous versions - especially in the area of seating (couches, chase-lounges, chairs etc.) Taking into account the use of different material working processes, instead of different materials, to elaborate diverse surfaces and shapes. Play with the contrast between soft and hard to create interest. Clean Coatings and Anti-Microbial Surfaces Anti-fingerprint Fluorosilicone Coatings can be used to prevent surface contamination (smudging, staining) on electronics (cell phone / MP3 / LCLCD / plasma displays, projection devices), optical components (anti reflective films, optical filters, ophthalmic camera lenses, mirrors), appliances, auto interiors, treated glass and earthenware.

2014 Family Cooking Trends Trends toward kid conscious and eco living.

Kids Cook It’s time to play with your food, and we don’t mean spaghetti sculptures of Fluffy the poodle. Pillsbury biscuits morphed into pizza bunnies and chicken tenders got a coating of crunchy corn flakes. The kids love it almost as much as adults do. Classes takes prep to the next level, featuring age-appropriate recipes that are fun to make, nutritious to eat, and a true learning experience for kids. In addition to learning about other cultures, they get invaluable lessons on teamwork, and time management -even math, science and food history! The fun part is proudly going home to cook meals that can be shared with friends and family. Many products are on the market that encourage kids to be a part of preparing meals for the family.

Social Family Rendez-vous breaks down barriers in the home, creating the perfect space for gathering, cooking and eating. Although they are not professional chefs, consumers desire is to make top-class food with the help of intuitive appliances. The top of the table is a unique energy shield that brings the appliances to life without having to plug them in. The blender can be placed on the surface to charge or activate. Beneath the table are modular drawers that can hold a stove, refrigerator or almost any kitchen appliance that the consumer needs. Cooking becomes a social activity, but there is no need to be flawless. Programmed in the Rendez-vous is a virtual chef that guides the consumer through the cooking process, making it foolproof. When it is time to eat, the drawers tuck away beneath the table.

Market to Kitchen - Eco Packaging Food Clubs are becoming a popular way of accessing organic and health food regardless of where you live. They are usually made up of 7 - 10 households which make it easier to buy food in bulk (natural food distributors/local farms) in order to get wholesale prices. Each member shares duties equally in the duties, from ordering the food to collecting money to distributing the order when it arrives. Consumers are coming up with ways to make it easier to bring these bulk foods home and even from the farmer’s market to the office for lunch. There is a latent need for products in this category that make it easier to bring food from the market to the kitchen. http://jessicaannmiller.com
