SKYJACK SJ46AJ

ARTICULATING BOOM LIFT OVERHAUL

Description The SJ46AJ Overhaul is a 2020 redesign of the existing Skyjack 46-foot articulating boom lift. The redesign uses an updated aesthetic to bring the Skyjack brand into the modern era, with a suite of features that make using the lift a less strenuous experience. With the added utility of an optional built-in forklift unit and the Nimbus platform system, delivering materials and on-site multi-tasking have never been easier. Remote operation and the Skyview camera package round out the SJ46AJ’s mobility and utility while focusing on lowering user safety hazards.

Product Analysis

Cu rrent M o de l

T h e S k y j a c k Br and

The current SJ46AJ uses a straightforward aesthetic without an abundance of detail, with base cowling serving a protective purpose more than anything and the rest of the machine expressing the machine’s functionality through mechanisms and controls. It is frequently powered with propane, and has diesel options for outdoor uses with additional optional packages for outdoor and winter use. It features a rotatable platform, 46’ reach, a large cast iron counter-weight and a body that doesn’t exceed the size of the base’s footprint for fitting in tight spaces.

Skyjack is known for their easily maintained equipment and positive relationship with renting establishments and customers. They define themselves as dependable, reliable, and focused on an accessible experience.

A reas for Impr ove me nt The user experience for an articulating boom lift is currently burdened by the complexity of the machine. With a wide variety of precise controls, the job of operating the lift can be daunting as each control has a related control switch (on both the platform and the base). The user also faces away from the surface they are trying to line up with, all while being aerial and driving. This visual disconnect between the user and the area they drive over can occasionally be the entire height of the machine, meaning losing detail and vital information about what they are driving over, risking their safety.

Solution Development

Id eation & F o c us Problem areas focused on included platform safety, harness variations for suspension trauma hazards, extendable counterweights and fully rotational platforms. As more realistic ideas were focused on, the accessibility aspects started to become the most important. Control schemes, accessible and easily repaired new technologies as well as additional functionality in the form of a forklift were explored.

The Skyview cameras act as a safety precaution for the user, providing a direct combined video feed to their controls so they can see any obstacles in front of their tires. This, combined with a small depth sensor, gives information for those driving the vehicle from the platform.

Combined Line of Sight The two cameras combine their views in the video feed.

MK-X OUTREACH REAR STORAGE AND LOAD FLOOR UNIT

Description Outreach provides the Lincoln MK-X with the storage and accessibility it requires to meet the needs of its target market. With an extending load floor, redistributed storage, light-weight materials and a built-in divider system, Outreach aims to let the user store their items their way with the least amount of stress and hassle possible.

Target Demographic

Th e Lux ury Conno i s s e ur

T h e Ac t i v e P ar e nt

Lincoln makes a point to emphasize the quality of their product, and the MK-X is no exception. A key demographic to maintain the interest of is the highend lifestyle individual who enjoys creature comforts and the experience of driving a high-quality vehicle.

The MK-X has a huge amount of utility as a multi-person transport vehicle, and has taken the interest of busy women and mothers who need the additional storage and seating to operate in their busy lives. Making sure the unit accommodates this group is necessary to keep up with their demanding days.

M aterial Imp l e me ntati o n

C u r r en t Us e

PCB is an extremely lightweight and vertically durable material, with a corrugate core sealed with polyurethane foam and coated in fiberglass and resin. This has endless utility as a construction material in body panels, load floors and wherever planar sections occur in large sections.

PCB is commonly used in the aeronautics and aerospace industries for its strength and weight properties, most frequently used in airplane body panels and storage units that are naturally planar or gently curved on only one axis.

Solution

O ut re a c h The Outreach system is a collection of storage and accessibility features that makes accessing the back of the Lincoln MK-X easier while maintaining the high-end aesthetic that Lincoln is known for.

D i v i d er s Dividing barriers can be manually lifted if sensitive or round objects are placed on the panel.

Ra il System The load floor’s rails allow it to come out a full 14”, and the dual symmetrical L-shaped rail guides prevent it from tilting when activated. The load floor can be either extended manually or automatically activated through the tail bumper’s sensor.

A Place For E v e r yt hi ng By removing the spare tire in place of a sealing foam spare tire alternative, weight and space are saved. This means more storage for long trips and a cleaner back since more covered sections are available. A fold out shelf in the back allows for round objects to be stored in place on a nylon-coated Lycra fabric, with easy overreach access.

Flip-Out Shelf

Quarter Panel Storage

Divider System

Two insulated spring-action compartments built into the side of the quarter panel allow you to store any goods you want to keep cool or warm for your travels. a foam bottle insert is also vailable, to keep your beverages safe on the road.

A retractable fabric divider system allows you to split the trunk space of your MK-X into two major sections, allowing you to store sensitive or rolling objects away from bulkier items.

Load Floor

Shelf Storage

The automatically deploying load floor assists you in getting heavier items to the back of your trunk, making storage less stressful. Manually opened dividers let you divde your trunk space further, and prevent items from rolling off.

Deployable shelves built into the back seat allow you to more easily access items behind you, such as backpacks or snacks. The shelf has multiple settings to fit your needs, and also acts as a barrier when the seats are folded down.

Under Storage

Under Storage Lighting

With the spare tire being replaced by the Smart Spare tire kit, you now have a large amount of space to store your vehicle necessities you might not want exposed such as cleaning and emergency supplies. The load floor is split in multiple sections so that you can access what you want, when you want it.

Lighting tubes allow you to see the contents of your under storage compartments as you access them. Each light is triggered as you lift the corressponding section, saving power and letting you see as you need it.

EMBRACE THESIS DOWNHILL SKIING KNEE BRACE SYSTEM

Description Embrace is a ski-boot integrated knee brace that reduces the rate of non-contact knee injuries. By introducing a new preventative measure for skiers to stop these injuries from occurring in the first place, the sport will be that much more welcoming.

Problem

KNEE INJURIES

33.2%

The goal of this thesis is to develop a

revolutionary way to brace the knees of alpine skiers to lower the chances of ACL injuries occurring.

P a ddin g Hi nge s Torsion Straps Fr ame B r ace Fo c us A re as One of the realistic product-oriented solutions to preventing knee damage when downhill skiing is to wear a brace. Some Issues with this solution currently are the Velcro strap system, the rotation and slipping of the brace, comfort and accessible sizing.

Ergonomic Analysis USE SKIING Interaction with Ski Pants Wearing a brace over ski pants can reduce the effectiveness of the brace drastically, as it is not in direct contact with the skin. Wearing the brace under ski pants introduces the new issue of catching and pulling if the brace has any sharp edges or pinching elements.

Limitations Skiing While skiing, the user is limited by their brace because of the new lateral limitations the brace works so hard to provide. While this does not drastically impact a skier’s capabilities, it does change how the experience feels and can take some getting used to.

USE WALKING Hyper-Extension Issues Walking in ski boots is already a task in itself, and not being able to hyper-extend your leg when necessary only adds to the inherent risk that limitations of the equipment cause. Walking, going down and up stairs, hiking to back country areas and even getting up from and into a picnic bench are activities that are affected.

EMBRACE BRACE FOR IMPACT.

DESCRIPTION EMBRACE is a revolutionary knee-brace and ski-boot hybrid that lowers the risk of kneerelated injuries while downhill skiing.

BOA STRAPS

DEGREES OF FREEDOM

R

Easily Adjustable Better Pressure Dispersion High Breathabilty Embedded wires operated by the BOA dial system allow the user to tighten the tension straps intuitively. The wire is a singular loop, allowing pressure to be dispersed evenly throughout the band’s surface area. R

HYPER-EXTENSION RELEASE Simple Operation Walk More Freely Opening the Hyper-Extension Release disengages Embrace’s knee hinge teeth, allowing for the knee to extend fully when walking or relaxing.

MOBILITY SYSTEM Walk Mode Rocker Toe and Heel Low Ankle Pivot Point To increase the safety and comfort of the user, the Embrace boot uses curved toe and heel plates to give the user a more comfortable stride. An engagable walk mode and lower pivot point add to the user’s comfort when not skiing.

110 Lateral Stability Prevents Anterior Draw Embrace supports your knee without interfering with your skiing experience. Maintain over 110 degrees of freedom while you ski with assured lateral stability and a gauruntee that hyper-extension will not occur.

RAIL LOCK SYSTEM Separate Brace at Will Prevents “Phantom Boot” Direct Brace/Boot Connection The Rail Lock creates a direct connection between the brace and boot. This adds leverage to the binding, allowing for easier release. It also allows more leverage to be applied to the toe, meaning more control.

CABRIO CONSTRUCTION 3-Piece Construction Allows For Retrofitting Replaceable Parts The Cabrio-style boot incorporates a separate tongue, perfect for integrating the Rail Lock System. With it’s separate tongue, leverage can be applied more directly to the toe edge of the ski.
