EDITOR’S NOTE

T

his summer I had the privilege of sitting in the stands at the World Championships in London to witness Usain Bolt’s last ever 100-metre race. Although the results weren’t what we had hoped, being there in a stadium packed with fans from all over the world, many in our national colours (whether Jamaican or not), all cheering on Bolt, I couldn’t help but feel proud. Not only of our remarkable athletes, but also of our ‘big, little island’ once more taking center stage and proving that without a doubt, “Wi may be likkle but wi tallawah” (we may be small but we are powerful). What is it about Jamaica that fascinates people the world over? Some say it is the “natural mystic” that the legendary Bob Marley sang about. For me, it’s that thing you can’t quite put your finger on because it is, in fact, a combination of elements that make us unique.

going: Buy a coconut on the road, have it chopped open, drink the water and eat the jelly. Go to a local dancehall and people watch or learn a move. Take in a cricket match and cheer with the locals. Eat a patty wrapped up in cocoa bread and wash it down with an ice cold Red Stripe or Ting. Learn a ’likkle’ patois: “Wha’ Gwaan?” (what’s happening) or “Big Up!” (a kind of thank you) both will serve you well. With so much to experience, you’ll be one of the many who return again and again. Please do! We’ll always be here to welcome you. One Love, Laura

KINGSTON Mosquitos Language

Jamaican Patois, otherwise known by linguists as Jamaican Creole, is an English based creole language with West African influences. Although it is the most widely spoken language in Jamaica, children are taught in and most formal business is conducted in standard (British) English. For a list of funny and useful phrases, visit the website www.jamaicaexperiences.com

Security

Jamaica, like other countries in the world, has its fair share of crime. It is always advisable to use the same common sense you would use at home. Store valuables in safes and do not flaunt them in public. Avoid lonely streets or unfamiliar areas at night. Jamaicans are very hospitable people and will always make an effort to help in case you need directions or assistance

Mosquitos tend to be more prevalent at dawn and dusk. To prevent mosquito bites, wear light coloured long pants and long sleeved clothes and use your mosquito repellent of choice. Although cases are less common now and the illnesses are not life threatening, the Zika, Dengue and Chik-V viruses are carried by mosquitos native to the region. Symptoms include headache, fever, rash and joint pain. Pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems should take extra precaution to avoid being bitten as the symptoms can become more complicated.

ATMS

ATMS can be found in all major towns across the island. Most are located inside banks but others might be found at gas stations, hotel lobbies, shopping plazas and supermarkets. Visa is the most widely accepted credit card on the island and can be used to withdraw Jamaican or US dollar funds at machines as necessary. JAMAICAEXPERIENCES.COM | 15

P

ossibly the most beautiful parish in all of Jamaica, Portland’s incredible natural beauty is comparable only to its laidback vibe. Once the stomping ground of the rich and famous, Port Antonio carries an eerie grandeur and a sense of desirable isolation, which when set against its lush and inspiring backdrop, has made it the film location of choice through the years. Celebrities still head here for the seclusion and unfussy vibe, as do visitors and locals from all walks of life seeking a true slice of paradise.

NEGRIL A

s famous for its seven mile stretch of white sand beach as it is for the cliffs that jut out above the bright blue waters on its west end, Negril, despite the amount of visitors it attracts, remains by and large the capital of casual. Although close enough to the north coast to access a variety of attractions, here the order of the day is simple: hang out at the beach until the sun sets, then dance barefoot under the stars, listening to live reggae.

Jamwest Adventure Park

Rick’s Cafe

It was one of the first attractions that drew visitors away from the 7-mile beach to the cliff side of Negril. This bar grew from the small, sleepy spot to watch a spectacular sunset in 1974, to a vibrant exciting party spot where people somersault or jump off cliffs before partying to live music into the night. After watching the spectacular sunset of course. www.rickscafejamaica.com

What started out as a Speedway has grown to an entire complex built just for fun. “Arrive and drive” as you hit the circuit in a race car and then keep the adrenaline running high as you actually Race Zip your friends on parallel ziplines or speed down an extreme water slide to plunge into the pool below. There is also a mineral bath and a spot to enjoy a delicious meal before partaking in many of the other activities available at the Park. www.jamwest.com

Idle AWhile

A trio of boutique hotels on the coast of the sun kissed western town offers a blissful stay on the beach, the cliffs or tucked away in a private oceanfront villa that will entirely capture the essence of the perfect Jamaican vacation. Each location boasts exceptional personal service in a relaxed and carefree idyllic setting. www.idleawhile.com

Cosmo’s seafood restaurant

Fact:

Did you know? Negril is actually in two parishes, Hanover and Westmoreland.

An iconic dining experience in the middle of the famous 7 mile stretch of white sand beach, Cosmo’s has been a landmark part of Negril from the town’s earliest days and the lobster, curried conch and other authentic Jamaican dishes are still just as delicious. Time it right to enjoy a cold Red Stripe as you take in the stunning sunset on the beach. www.jamaicajim.com/cosmos JAMAICAEXPERIENCES.COM | 23

WHAT TO DO NOW

Advertorial

a Mind-Blowing Day of Adventure

From flying through a dense tropical jungle, to slowly making your way downstream on a kayak, Chukka Caribbean’s flagship location at Good Hope in Trelawny offers something for every age and level of adrenaline junkie.

by Liam Bernard

FLYING THROUGH THE TREES

The zip line course at Chukka is one of the most adventure-filled and exciting attractions visiting thrill seekers will find on the island. With a course consisting of 5 different lines, guests enjoy panoramic vistas of the river and “ugly fruit” fields as they ‘zip’ along above the earth in a harness.

Welcome To The Jungle Bar

Offering a variety of Jamaican staples including jerk chicken, food from this chill spot by the river will fill you up and give you the energy you need to take you through the rest of your adventure filled day. Don’t forget to stop by the bar to get a drink, or two - choosing from many local favourites – from Red Stripe to Rum Punch – to complement your delicious lunch. JAMAICAEXPERIENCES.COM | 26

Chill Out on the Martha Brae River

The best way to feel refreshed after a day of walking around under the hot Jamaican sun is to go for a dip in the Martha Brae. Luckily, you can join other guests tubing down the river, or, if you are up for something more active, try kayaking along.

Explore Colonial History at Good Hope Great House

For history buffs and lovers of all things cultural, experiencing an authentic retelling of the history of Good Hope Estate is a must. Revisit the past and learn about Jamaican sugar plantation society’s role in the nation’s history as you stroll through the grounds of the old great house. Informative and educational, the tour also showcases the beauty of the Cockpit Country with a spectacular view.

Flock to the Bird Aviary

Chukka’s 900 square foot bird aviary is a cool experience for kids and adults alike. The unique experience of being able to feed, touch and play with these tropical birds makes it fun for the entire family. Beware, these friendly (or hungry) little creatures have a tendency to land on your head, so don’t be surprised if you have an exotic visitor stop in to say hey... or better yet ‘wha gwan?

Check to see if there are any requirements before booking a tour for age, health, height or skill level. No matter what, Chukka is bound to have something for almost anyone from toddlers to the simply young at heart, making this the perfect choice to fill at least one vacation day with thrills galore. www.chukka.com

Portland: A Nature Lover’s Paradise! by Laura Henzell

Possibly the prettiest parish in all of Jamaica, Portland boasts several of the most stunning, unspoiled natural attractions on the island. Here are 4 that nature lover’s won’t want to miss:

A Luxury Villa in a Stunning Setting

P

ort Antonio is one of the most beautiful areas in Jamaica, and we dare say, in the world. Located in a tropical rainforest, Port Antonio gets just enough rain to keep the area lush and green, allowing Mother Nature to showcase her best. It is here in this majestic setting that Nautilus, perched on the edge of the Caribbean Sea, has taken its place as one of only a handful of luxurious villas in the exclusive community of San San. Located equidistant and a short kayak or paddleboard away from the uninhabited “Monkey” (Pellew) Island and the world famous Blue Lagoon, Nautilus is a fully staffed, three bedroom property, as comfortable for a romantic getaway as it is for a break with friends or family. The staff complement includes an experienced butler, chef and housekeeper who will tend to your every need and make sure that your time away is truly relaxing and memorable. Sit and lay on the deck and enjoy the beautiful daytime and nighttime breezes, the sound of the waves lapping onshore and the spectacular nights decorated with a sky full of stars. Reach Falls Cascading over boulders into a deep

swimming hole, the falls might be what you came for, but the setting and biodiversity that can be seen here is an added treat. See over 23 species of ferns, black and yellowbilled parrots and occasionally, rare wild pigs. Visit www.udcja.com to find out more information.

The Blue Lagoon Once thought to be bottomless, this

200ft deep lagoon with its glistening aqua and dark blue undertones, warm and cold waters and lush green tropical setting, is perfect for a quiet swim alone or with friends. Although it can be accessed by road, a nice way to visit the lagoon is by boat. While entrance is free, you will have to negotiate a fee with the boat captains for the ride.

Frenchman’s Cove Offering an amazing trio of natural beauty

all in one location – river, beach and sea – the unique setting of Frenchman’s Cove has been luring visitors for decades. Swim in the river, swim in the sea, lie down on the beach – relax in the sun or the shade. The only way to make this better is to order some lunch and enjoy a cold drink, all while taking in the breathtaking view. Frenchman’s Cove charges an entrance fee and also rents cottages on property. Visit: www.frenchmanscove.com

bananas from the interior of the island to the shore. Legendary Hollywood star, Errol Flynn, who lived in Port Antonio for many years, first introduced rafting for fun. Be guided
by a boat captain downstream while relaxing
on a bamboo raft perfect for two, surrounded by the most spectacular views. Today rafting on the Rio Grande is one of the most famous attractions in the parish enjoyed by visitors and Jamaican’s alike. For more information visit: www.portantonio.com

Experience Jamaica, One Shop at a Time

How the Tourism Linkages Council’s Shopping Network is working hard to improve shopping experiences across the island.

by Anup Chandiram

A

s President of the Duty Free Association of Jamaica I am pleased to say that Jamaica has some of the best duty free shopping in the Caribbean. We excel in branded watches, jewellery, sunglasses and perfumes. Our duty free structure gives us a 10%-20% saving over North American pricing which when combined with the fact that we don’t have a sales tax, is even more substantial. However, because we haven’t updated the list of items we are allowed to sell for many years, we
 are currently limited to these
few categories.

modern policies and legislation that reflect the current realities of the marketplace. We have recognized the incredible power of the internet and the decline in traditional brick and mortar retail. We also understand that on vacation, in leisure mode, visitors have a higher propensity to spend. As Jamaicans, we must become more innovative in our product offering and once we capture the visitor’s imagination, we can market to them even when they are back home using new digital and social media tools.

That said, I am really excited about what the future has in store for us. Our Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, is a seasoned veteran who understands his portfolio very well. He knows that Jamaica is unique and that our customers, especially millennials and Generation Z visitors, are all about having one of a kind experiences. He has put Jamaica at the forefront of global and forward-thinking policies with the reconstitution of the Tourism Linkages Council. Chaired by Sandals CEO, Adam Stewart, the Council aims to develop and blend our country’s special offerings together to provide a tourism product that is authentically and uniquely Jamaican. One of the pillars of the Tourism Linkages Council is the Shopping Network. Our goal is to make Jamaica the number one shopping destination in the Caribbean. We have worked tirelessly with our policymakers to come up with new,

Combined with our resorts, food establishments, live entertainment and attractions, Jamaica can offer more authenticity and variety than any other Caribbean destination. Success will mean more demand for rooms, higher rates year round and ultimately more earning, greater employment and wealth creation for our citizens.

JAMAICAEXPERIENCES.COM | 38

Jamaica is at a “tipping point” with growth being the new paradigm and tourism the key component. I believe the “linkages” model will contribute greatly to achieving our national goals and help propel our country into a prosperous future. Living in an ever shrinking world, we need to stand out to gain market share. We are uniquely positioned and will rise together if everyone pulls in the same direction. All aboard!

Anup Chandiram is the CEO of his 3rd generation family business, Bijoux, representing some of the world’s famous brand names in watches and jewellery. These include Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Hublot, Tag Heuer, Mikimoto, John Hardy and Pandora. He is the President of the Duty Free Association of Jamaica and the Chairman of the Tourism Linkages Network on Shopping.

About two hours in length, this road trip traverses the rugged southern coastline of the island enabling passengers to take in the varying sights and sounds of a more undeveloped Jamaica. See a crocodile in Black River, drive through a lush bamboo avenue, grab a fish and festival at Border, stop in Bluefields and pay homage to Peter Tosh or take a swim with a cold Red Stripe in hand at any of the public beaches along the way before arriving – in time to catch a sunset of course - on the 7 miles of beach you came to visit in Negril.

A drive up this winding road from the plains of Kingston takes about an hour through the cool foothills of St. Andrew and into the Blue and John Crown Mountain range - 26,000 hectares of land recently demarcated as a World Heritage Site. Stop to take a photo or have a cup of coffee along the way, pack a picnic and visit Holywell National Park where you can take a guided hike to a waterfall. Either way the drive is the great way to spend a day.

Stony Hill to Port Antonio

3. Spanish Town to Ocho Rios

Now that there’s an option, everyone has their favourite. The new highway which will undoubtedly get you door to door in just over an hour, is a feat in engineering cutting through the mountains, serving up spectacular views (because of its elevation) of the the two sides of the island. The old road in comparison takes over two hours and winds its way through the river valleys along the Rio Cobre then climbs the precarious (in nickname only) Mount Diablo before beginning a long descent towards the sea, where roadside food stops and fruit vendors abound.

The journey from Stony Hill through Junction is possibly one of the most scenic ways to get to the town of Port Antonio, set in the wild lush beauty of the parish of Portland. From Kingston, take the Stony Hill Road and feel the air begin to cool as you hit the increasingly narrow winding road through small towns along the river valley and up into the mountains to Friendship Gap where you can get delicious soups and Aquarius fried chicken. Coming off the Junction mountain road, head to the right at the large roundabout (left takes you to Oracabessa and Ocho Rios), through cane and coconut fields to hit the coastal road along Annotto, Buff, Hope, Orange and St. Margaret’s Bays, stopping off for a lazy river rafting experience down the Rio Grande along the way before reaching beautiful Port Antonio.

Time. Well. Spent. Time flies when you're having fun! To ensure you make the most of of it, here are 7 suggestions brought to you by Jewels in Paradise.

Time for a Cocktail

Wishing You Could Make Time Stand Still

Cherish special events with groups of friends or multiple generations of your family at properties across the island that specialize in hosting large groups. From access for people with disabilities, to childcare and event planning services – no detail is too big or small to cater to when it comes to spending time with the ones you love.

Spend Some Quality Family Time

The old adage says it’s not the quantity but the quality of time you spend that your kids remember. One great way to connect is to participate in the on property activities: beach and pool games are generally offered at hotels throughout the day, while at night talent shows are an awesome way to let your hair down and have a little fun. Other ways to spend time include: taking a class together (yoga, scuba diving or cooking are great options), volunteering at a local school or simply star gazing at night.

Nothing says you are on vacation more than sipping a tropical cocktail, toes in the sand, watching the sun set before your very eyes. Enjoy Jamaican classics like Planter’s Punch, a Stingray, Shandy, Dirty Banana, Bob Marley shots and of course for beer lovers nothing beats an icy cold Red Stripe Beer!

Have a Timeless Moment

Be in the Right Place at the Right Time

It’s a fact that Jamaica is one of the most popular wedding destinations in the
Caribbean but did you know it’s also a great place to propose? Make that moment one of a kind by asking for her hand on a cliff at sunset, in a cave at dinner, under a waterfall, on a bamboo raft in a river, on top of Jamaica’s highest mountain peak or simply at sunset on a beach. Whatever you choose it will be a memory to last a lifetime.

Love reggae? Come to concerts like Sumfest or Rebel Salute, we have them year round under the stars. Enjoy watching Track & Field? Be the first to spot the next Usain Bolt with our annual events at the stadium. Appreciate the arts? We’ve got great exhibits at the National Gallery, Pantomimes at the Little Theatre and awesome authors at the Calabash Literary Festival. And the list goes on and includes yoga retreats, triathlons, marathons, food festivals and film festivals. If you’ve got the time – we’ve got the event.

ME Time

Whether you travel to the island alone, with a friend or loved one – vacations are a great opportunity to make a little “me time”. Check in to your hotel’s spa and indulge your senses, go for a run on a seven-mile beach or simply swing in a hammock. Whatever you choose you’ll return home refreshed and rejuvenated.

Tee Time

With 11 golf courses across the island, Jamaica is one of the best places to enjoy a round in a picture perfect setting under the warm Caribbean sun. From White Witch at Rose Hall on the North Coast to Caymanas Golf Club on the outskirts of Kingston – there is a course for everyone from beginner to pro – and a tournament too for spectators and players alike. Port Royal

The Original

Sin City By Tony Gambrill

I

f you had a yearning to visit “the most wicked and sinful city in the world”, as Port Royal was described by the English diarist, John Taylor, you may be a little too late to join the party. Much of that notorious town slid into the sea 300 years ago, destroyed by the horrendous earthquake of 1692. However, enough of the historical town exists to fire the imagination. Heavy cannon still aim at the sea from historic Fort Charles and the town is still one whose inhabitants’ lives are linked to the sea. When the English seized Jamaica from the Spanish in 1655 they realized that site of Port Royal – situated at the end of a series of cays encompassing the harbour of present day Kingston - was strategically vital. Over the next 30 years it was heavily fortified and a port settlement sprang up. By the time of the earthquake Port Royal contained 200 houses, most constructed from brick, and boasted nearly 8,000 inhabitants. JAMAICAEXPERIENCES.COM | 54

It was larger than all other colonial towns except Boston in North America. The population included Irish, Scots, Jews, French, Africans, Miskito Indians and even renegade Spanish, and, amongst their number were to be found merchants, tavern owners, doctors, judges, churchmen, a regiment of 2,500 men and 4,000 slaves and of course “women of ill–repute”.

were suspended. The financial benefits to the town were immense. Almost everyone made a profit. Merchants acquired the stolen goods for sale in Jamaica or to export abroad. Taverns, cock fighting pits and brothels flourished. During one month alone, 40 new licenses were issued for taverns, ‘grogge’ shops and punch houses, leading one citizen On the edge of Port Royal sits to complain St. Peter’s Church and in its churchyard But vital to the that: “Port you will find the grave of Lewis Galdy, commercial Royal now had the amazing survivor of the 1692 life of Port one drinking earthquake that ended the sinful era Royal were the establishment of Port Royal. When their pockets were empty, which didn’t take long, the buccaneers put out to sea once again. Henry Morgan, the legendary buccaneer whose crowning achievement was to lead 2,000 men across the Isthmus of Panama to sack Panama City, a jewel of Spanish America, later transformed from buccaneer to Lieutenant Governor of the island itself and claimed the title of a knight becoming ‘Sir’. It was on his advice the fortification at Port Royal was enhanced. On 7 June 1692, Port Royal was struck by a massive earthquake and tidal wave. More than 2,000 people died and most of the buildings were destroyed with many literally falling away into the sea or into the huge crevices that opened up. Legend has it

that the bell in the church tower, which fell into the sea, can still sometimes be heard tolling from beneath the waves. After the earthquake and tidal wave came fire, and some talked about the sins of the city being punished. By then most residents had moved on to the plains of Kingston and Port Royal became simply a military stronghold. Fort Charles, which survived the earthquake, can still be seen by visitors today. Inside the battlements are two small museums capturing the history of the town as well as Nelson’s quarter deck on which a young English officer Horatio Nelson, later the hero of the Napoleonic War’s Battle of Trafalgar, strutted in command of the Fort. One of the most famous features of Port Royal and a favourite photo op for most visitors today is ‘Giddy House’, a former red brick artillery building that sunk partway into the earth during a subsequent earthquake in 1907 and its 45 degree angle allows a strange phenomenon of leaning to stay upright and inducing dizziness or ‘giddyness’ once you enter. ‘Sin City’ may have sunk into the sea, but the spirit and history are alive and well and a day can be spent wandering the historic town as it stands today and soaking in the history of the beginnings of Jamaica as we know it today. Photos published with the knowledge and permission of the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) www.jnht.com

Head straight to the fort and spend the morning exploring the battlements and learning about the history of this symbol of the beginnings of British rule in Jamaica. Exhibits in the mini museum trace the development of Jamaican maritime history. There is a scale model of the fort and models of ships of past eras. Visit www.jnht.com for more information.

The Evolution of jamaican Jerk I

n the early 17th century when the Spanish abandoned that part of Hispaniola known today as Haiti, the empty lands including the nearby island known as Tortuga, was now only occupied by abandoned pigs, horses, cows, even dogs which attracted bands of French adventurers and eventually marooned sailors, runaway slaves, colonial deserters and other misfits. Finding feral animals to hunt and kill they learnt from the indigenous Taino Indians how to cook them. They dug a shallow pit and drove a stake into the ground on each corner three feet above the ground on to which they erected a grill from branches of hardwood. This was known as a boucan on which strips of salted meat were slow-cooked over a fire of aromatic wood like pimento, stoked with fat, bones and entrails from the slaughtered animal. The benefit of this, particularly the smoking of the meat, preserved it for days. These men were known as “boucaniers” from the boucan on which they cooked and cured their catch. This method, with a few variations, is the foundation of Jamaican “jerk”as we know it today.

Day Trip: Boat Trip to the Cays:

Just off of Port Royal are a handful of cays, including the most popular Lime Cay, that are a popular day trip for locals seeking a little “vitamin sea"! Although you can pick up a boat from the town center itself, Y-Knot, a small bar and grill on the way into town, offers a convenient and hassle free service with launches daily. Food and drink are available on the weekends from 9am7pm. Tel: (876) 967 8448 or (876) 354-1269 (ask for Conrad)

In homage perhaps to the buccaneers (the English name for the boucaniers), here is a recipe from Walkersood, that combines two great Jamaican staples jerk seasoning and Red Stripe beer to make an incredibly tasty dish.

Ingredients

1 whole chicken, cleaned 4 Tbsp. Walkerswood Jerk Seasoning 1 small onion 3 oz. garlic powder 2 tsp. salt 1 can Red Stripe beer

Clean chicken thoroughly; do not cut into pieces. Season with salt and garlic powder to your taste. Rub Walkerswood Jerk Seasoning on the chicken – inside and out. Cut up a small onion and stuff in the middle of the chicken. Let chicken sit in refrigerator overnight. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Open a can of beer and place in the middle of a roasting pan. Set chicken on top of the open beer can and bake in oven for 1 hour or until done. Baste chicken with butter throughout cooking. The chicken is ready when it is tender, juicy and ready to eat! YOHAN BLAKE

When sprinter Yohan Blake isn’t on a mission to keep the Jamaican flag flying high, he loves to kick back and relax in his island home.

T

he second fastest Jamaican man in both the 100 and 200-metres, this WATA Brand Ambassador is also the youngest 100 and 200-metres world champion in history. With the recent retirement of fellow Jamaican Usain Bolt, athletics fans on the island - and beyond wait in great anticipation to see if Blake will be able to fill those record-breaking shoes. Jamaica Experiences caught up with Yohan on a recent layover in Jamaica on the future of Jamaican track and field, the best places to visit on island and the one meal that everyone should try! JE: What are you looking forward to the most for Jamaican Track & Field athletes in 2018? YB: With the grace of God, to help Jamaica stay number one in the world, take over where Usain left off and carry the flag high. JE: What would you say, to date, has been your most memorable moment representing Jamaica?

JAMAICAEXPERIENCES.COM | 56

YB: One of my best moments for Jamaica was being part of the team that came 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 200-metres at the London Olympics in 2012. Usain came first (a historical double sprint win), I came second and Warren (Weir) came third. Still today it’s very fresh in my mind — just making that 1, 2, 3 — it’s something that’s never happened before and for Jamaica to do that.. it was amazing. JE: What do you love most about Jamaica? YB: What I love the most about Jamaica is our culture, especially our creole language (Patois), there are so many great performers like Louise Bennett, Oliver Samuels, Glen Campbell … beautiful singers… and of course the history of our track and field. We have accomplished so much as a little island … we say: We Likkle But We Tallawah. I also love our food – especially jerk chicken!

JE: What is the one place on the island that you think everyone should visit? YB: I would say Negril.. it is so rich in different activities… but there’s also Portland where you’ll find the Blue Lagoon, in Ochie (Ocho Rios) there’s the Blue Hole.. there are so many it's hard to specify just one! JE: What’s the one dish everyone should try? YB: Most people would say ackee and saltfish… but I have my own dish that I would love everyone to try: dumpling, yam and green banana with stew chicken and ackee! People will try to tell you just have the ackee and saltfish but I say give something like this a try because it will just give a different flavour.

JE: What was the one place you always went to with your friends or family as a child in Jamaica? YB: We didn’t travel much when we were growing up but I had an uncle in Montego Bay and we would visit him regularly. JE: Where is one place on the island you haven’t visited yet but would like to? YB: Well I haven’t visited many places in Jamaica – I just love being at my home and chilling. I haven’t been to Savannah-LaMar or St. Mary, there are lots of parishes I still have to explore. JE: When you’re not competing what do you do to chill out? YB: When I am not training I like to play cricket. Second to track and field, it’s a sport that I love

JE: You are currently an Ambassador for the WATA brand, can you tell us why you think being the ambassador of a homegrown company is important. WATA Hydrates Jamaica’s 5K Run/Walk Mania

Many of the 5ks held in Jamaica these days have a philanthropic component. The Food for the Poor 5K is a prime example of this, as in its first year they raised over JMD$46million to build homes for the needy in Jamaica. This year Wisynco and WATA have joined up with Jamaica’s Ministry of Health initiative called Jamaica Moves. Jamaica Moves has implemented many events to encourage Jamaicans to engage in physical activity and to improve their dietary habits. Wisynco is participating in the Jamaica Moves Corporate Challenge, which has partnered with multiple 5k runs and walks to pit various Jamaican companies agains each other to see which Jamaican company has the best team. Wisynco will participate in October in the ICWI Cancer Run, the JN Heroes Run, and a few more. WATA and Wisynco are happy to be part of getting Jamaica healthier. For information on upcoming 5k races and other running events visit: www.runningeventsja.com

JE: When you’re competing internationally, what is the one thing you miss most about home? YB: I miss our food the most. I miss my friends, the culture of the island … and of course there is no water like WATA when you are away from home! JAMAICAEXPERIENCES.COM | 57

small, young dolphin, barely 4 feet long, incredibly thin, very black from the sun, weak, and barely moving after being the play toy of some local youth, and probably less than a year old, had been found beached on the island of Jamaica in April of 2002. A call went out and the marine animal rescue team at Dolphin Cove immediately responded and headed out to help the distressed dolphin. In the dolphin world, a mother does not leave her baby, unless knowing she is too sick to keep up with the pod, so this little one was left to die. Still the Dolphin Cove team thoroughly searched the surrounding sea to try and see if her pod could be located nearby, always with the hope that she had only been beached by accident. The team however, had no success in locating her pod. The decision was made to take her back to Dolphin Cove to see what could be done for her. With top consultant marine veterinarians on the way, and in consultation with the Overseas Expert Veterinarian , pictures were sent of her while the feeble dolphin was placed in a natural lagoon and watched over by the team until she could be assessed. She was being called “April” by now, by the team who had found her and were worriedly taking care of her, simply

because it was the month she had entered their lives. However, the news was heartbreaking after she had been examined. It was announced she only had a 20% chance of survival and would most likely not make it. The dedicated Dolphin Team worked round the clock – holding her in the water, never giving up. She was unable to eat or digest her food as she was suffering from mouth and stomach ulcers. The team vigilantly gave her medicine and liquefied fish through a tube as she was watched over 24 hours a day. At this point she was already family, having won over everyone who had now joined in the effort to save her. It was decided by the owners of Dolphin Cove to put every resource they had towards saving the tiny calf named “April”. There were small victories along the way but a true sign of her “come back” was when she started jumping over the divisions of the lagoons to go play with the nearby pod of other bottle nose dolphins in the large lagoon next door. What was amazing to watch was that she started imitating the other dolphins without being trained to dance with them and presenting her tail just as they did. Soon, she had also captured the hearts of the other dolphins and was immediately integrated into their pod. Although she had gained weight and was doing so much better, “April” was in need of ongoing care and medication and the decision was made after a lot of deliberation to continue

to nurse her at Dolphin Cove due to both her attachment to her new pod and the realization that she would not be able to survive in the wild. A request was made and a permit granted for her foster family to become her true family. The owners had 4 sons and had a name they had saved for the daughter they never had; and so “April” became Misty. She has shared her love with children who have come to visit over the years, but one moment stands out. A young girl, only seven years old, who is autistic and had not spoken a word in her life, one day received a kiss from a creature who seemed magical and she said her first words. Ever. “Dolphin! Misty!” Like any fairy tale, a special kiss had woken her up. Misty continues to frolic at Dolphin Cove and is now herself a mother. She is now a healthy 8.5 feet in length and is 330 pounds of beauty. Dolphin Cove is an aquamarine park offering interactive and educational experiences with dolphins, sharks, sting rays, iguanas, macaws, a complete aviary and other nature encounters.
