The Governor General

n the 49 years since it was established, the Jamaica Exporters’ Association (JEA) has earned national respect through its programmes and partnerships to promote the expansion and development of Jamaica's exports. The change of its Motto from "Helping Each Other in International Trade" to "Committed to National Development Through Exports" reflected its increasing maturity through this transformation of the JEA’s world view. Objectives for Jamaica’s economic development were placed on a firmer footing when the national good became the JEA’s overriding objective. As the Association embraced the export sector’s vital role in Jamaica’s development, it is obvious that its members grew to appreciate and rely on the commendable range of services which it offers to them. This includes the advice and encouragement given to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). Importantly, by emphasising competitiveness, quality export performance and global thinking, the JEA influences productivity strategies so our firms can better seize existing and new opportunities in the global marketplace. Its work boosts “Brand Jamaica” thereby promoting the realization of our vision for Jamaica to be our place of choice to live, work, raise our families and do business. I commend the JEA for its consistent commitment to Jamaica, its encouragement of entrepreneurship, its confidence in the MSMEs as pivotal to economic development and most of all, for its demonstrated belief in Jamaica’s ability to achieve our objectives. It is my hope that the JEA’s success will increase, not only for the benefit of its membership, but also for the wider society in the building of a strong vibrant Brand Jamaica that will be attractive to the international marketplace and of which all Jamaicans will be proud. Best wishes for the future!

His Excellency The Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen, ON, GCMG, CD, KSt.J Governor General of Jamaica

The Prime Minister

I

t is with great pleasure that I congratulate the Jamaica Exporters’ Association (JEA) on its 49th Anniversary. The longevity of this Association is a mark of its widely acclaimed success. Organizations do not survive for so long without committed leaders and members who hold a clear vision of purpose and deep sense of mission. The well-known phrase, ‘export or die’, remains relevant, especially in our era of globalization. We must compete with a large number of producers from many other countries. The JEA recognizes this. I therefore welcome its campaign to inform Jamaicans about its initiatives such as its Champion Exporter and Pioneer Exporter programmes and current initiatives to grow Jamaica’s export sector. I endorse the JEA’s campaign to inform more Jamaicans and consumers as well as investors at home and abroad through our foreign missions and overseas companies about Jamaican products. Jamaicans must be our trade ambassadors. They know and can testify to Jamaican products. I also welcome the plan to distribute the JEA’s 49th Anniversary Magazine to offices representing governments in Jamaica – Embassies, Trade Missions, Consulates, and High Commissions. I am excited about Jamaica’s trade prospects. Jamaican foods, clothing, beverages, tobacco, crafts, furniture, building products, automotive products, art, chemicals, agricultural and fisheries products, fresh produce, herbs and herbal products, among others, must always rise to the demand for quality and competitiveness overseas. I take this special opportunity to invite investors in the export trade to take advantage of geography, location, culture, organization, and Jamaica’s role in international trade organizations. I do believe we can replace many imports by producing for the Jamaican market ourselves and increase our exports by producing for overseas markets. Jamaicans in the Diaspora, we should remember, want as much of ‘home’ as they can get abroad. I ask them to also support Jamaican exports. The Government of Jamaica has its role to play. We must work together to make procedures simpler and the business environment more conducive to investors. I know partnerships and collaboration work. Jamaica’s non-traditional exports have increased over the past three years under the National Export Strategy. Together, we must therefore strengthen linkages with agriculture and other sectors, continue to develop market innovation and sustain our export promotion campaigns. Forty-nine years is a long time. The JEA, however, is not weary and old-fashioned. It remains fresh and energetic. I like that. I wish you well in your present and future endeavours and in meeting the targets set for your fiftieth year. The Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller, ON, MP Prime Minister of Jamaica 9

The Leader of the Opposition

T

he economic and social survey of Jamaica for 20 13 states "despite the improvement in the wider economy, Jamaica's merchandise trade deficit worsened in 2013 due to a reduction in export receipts which outweighed the lower spending on imports". Despite the great demand worldwide for the high quality of Jamaica's products and services the country faces many challenges. There still remain many hurdles which we must clear on the path to a positive contribution to the gross domestic product of the country by the export sector. As stated by Former Prime Minister Bruce Golding "we can significantly increase the levels of export competitiveness and sales .... " It is in this context that I wish to recognize the well-founded intentions of the Jamaica Exporters’ Association. Since its inception in 1966 to promote and develop the export sector, the organization, under the leadership of a number of loyal, dedicated and committed Jamaicans, has been unshakable in its mission of commitment to national development through exports. I must congratulate the organization for the publication of its forty ninth anniversary magazine which continues to commemorate the history and achievements of the Association. The magazine will further serve to stimulate Jamaicans to contribute to national competitiveness particularly through improved national productivity and increased competitiveness of their workplaces. I wish you well as you continue your mission to "build a strong vibrant Brand Jamaica of which all Jamaicans can feel proud". The Honourable Andrew Holness, MP Leader of the Opposition

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade

T

he year 2015 will be a critical one for all countries. It represents the deadline for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as well as the point of departure for the acceleration of global consultations towards a new post2015 global development agenda, with sustainable development at its core. Jamaica has been an active participant in the ongoing consultations to ensure that its development objectives, which include job creation and increases in competitiveness and exports, are reflected. Improving the quality and increasing the quantity of Jamaica’s exports in the key markets remain essential components of Jamaica’s growth and development strategy. In this respect, I wish to commend the Jamaica Exporters’ Association(JEA) for its continued contribution to growth. The Association’s commitment to the empowerment of local producers ensures that their products are of high international standards and can compete in the global market place. The JEA’s initiatives, including the Expo Jamaica 2014, National Exporters’ Month and the Shipping and Logistics Expo, have exposed new products to the market; provided necessary information to exporters; aided the enhancement of the competitiveness of many Jamaican exporters; and uncovered opportunities that exist for greater participation by foreign investors in our local companies. This is especially important given the Government’s efforts at improving the local investment climate and attracting greater inflows of foreign direct investment.

Efforts to increase activities that generate wealth for the nation should therefore be targeted and undertaken in a responsible and sustainable manner. At this critical juncture, I have no doubt that the JEA will continue to ensure that its members seize opportunities to improve their businesses through innovation, retooling and capacity building, as well as compliance with international export regulations. The JEA is also continuing its efforts to identify new markets and to further penetrate existing markets under trade agreements. This will further extend the country's reach into traditional and non-traditional markets and lead to longterm benefits not only for our companies but for the entire nation, through job creation and export earnings. Over the years the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade has benefitted tremendously from its partnership with the JEA in the areas of trade policy formulation and trade negotiations. I look forward, therefore, to the JEA continuing to demonstrate its customary zeal and visionary spirit. I wish the Association every success in the coming year and reiterate the readiness of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade to continue the strategic collaboration with the JEA that has served us so well over the years.

Senator the Honourable A.J. Nicholson, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade

The Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce

I

t is with great pleasure that I endorse the Jamaica Exporters’ Association (JEA) in this your 49th anniversary publication.

Since your inception in 1966, the JEA has sought to address the needs of Jamaica’s export sector. The organisation has assisted exporters with market investigations and formulated strategies to expand the export sector while advocating for improvements for the membership. Over the years, the JEA has proven itself to be creative and intuitive in its ability to provide for the needs of exporters across the island. Today, as Jamaica moves towards becoming a logistics centered economy, the Association is a critical stakeholder in this new stage of growth and development. We encourage you, therefore, to continue your efforts to build Jamaica through exports. Indeed, the values of collaboration, competition, empowerment, entrepreneurship, growth, integrity, and service which the JEA espouses are in accordance with a forerunner in the field of business facilitation. As Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, I salute the JEA in the achievement of this milestone and offer best wishes for your continued success. The Honourable Anthony Hylton, MP Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce

C

ritical to the development, competitiveness and global positioning of any economy is its productive base. The efforts of Jamaican manufacturers, agroprocessors and distributors form an important part of national life and the contribution they make, especially as exporters of commodities, is instrumental in establishing and fortifying the productive base of our economy. While we cannot boast that we are where we would like to be as a player in the global trading system in terms of our trade balances, the sterling efforts of our exporters and the Jamaica Exporters' Association (JEA) have been putting us in a position to more effectively navigate the vicissitudes of contemporary global trade and address the gaps that exist between Jamaica and key trading partners. It is within this context that Jamaican exporters are to be seen as playing a lead role in our economic advancement thrust, impacting appreciably on our industries and people alike. The export fraternity's imprint not only manifests in the form of jobs and the backward and forward linkages the activities of its members trigger, but also in terms of the foreign exchange earnings they generate and the signal they send that Jamaica is indeed open for business. But if we are serious about positioning ourselves as a useful trading partner and an economy that is open for business, we have to address that raft of issues that continue to frustrate the efforts of our manufacturers, in particular, and bedevil those involved in the

export sector generally. The high costs of energy, instability in the foreign exchange market, and low labour productivity are among them. That notwithstanding, the JEA is deserving of commendation as it marks this significant milestone, because it has served to lift the profile of our export fraternity, provide a vehicle around which exporters can coalesce, and set the stage for increased dynamism amongst its members. Indeed, a key feature of the JEA's work over the years has been the strident and vociferous advocacy in which it has engaged on behalf of its members. You have never missed an opportunity to engage stakeholders, Government in particular, in addressing matters of concern to the export fraternity, and proffer solutions as to how your interests may be better served and protected, as we strive as a nation to match wits with the world's finest. I have every confidence that you will remain vibrant advocates for our exporters. I am equally assured that you will spare no effort in further unlocking the potential of your members and building capacity amongst them in a manner that inures to increased competitiveness of our economy and more favourable trade balances.

ith a size of approximately 4240 sq. miles and a population of approximately 2.75 million, Jamaica could fit very comfortably in any of the major cities of the world. Nevertheless, Jamaica is one of the most easily recognized countries in the world. This is attributed to the fact that we are known for our Reggae music and icons such as Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff; our outstanding athletes such as Arthur Wint, Merlene Ottey, Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, and our food items such as Blue Mountain Coffee, Jerk, Ackee, Jamaican Ginger and yams, to name a few. Our tourism attractions and the warmth of our people have also helped to set us apart as unique. The Jamaica Exporters’ Association (JEA) salutes all exporters for their contribution in helping to build Brand Jamaica internationally, through their efforts to ensure the availability of high quality, authentic Jamaican goods and services, and their support of the export sector. As we embrace the strength of Brand Jamaica, it is important that we ensure that as a nation we are maximizing the value of this powerful and valuable brand. It is important that all Jamaican exporters of goods or services take the necessary steps to secure their intellectual rights by obtaining Intellectual Property [IP] rights protection in all the countries to which they export or intend to export. It is only by ensuring that only authentic Jamaican products are sold or delivered that we can really maximize the value of Brand Jamaica and the value of our respective products. Because of the strength of Brand Jamaica in the international market, Jamaican companies are now experiencing increased incidents of IP infringements where other brands are purporting

18

to be Jamaican. Deceptive practices are taking place. Jamaican brands are being duplicated or copied and presented to look so similar to the authentic brand that consumers are confused. In other instances, products without any authentic Jamaican ingredients are declared to be ‘Jamaican style’. We recognize the importance of ensuring intellectual property protection and in partnership with The Competitiveness Company the JEA has registered nine marks to offer protection to Jamaican products: a) four Collective Marks for Wearable Art; Visual Art; Fresh Produce and Boutique Agriculture; b) four Certification Marks for Processed Ackees; Jamaican Jerk Seasoning and Sauces; Scotch Bonnet Pepper and Honey, and c) one Generic Certification Mark. The JEA also applauds the work being done both at the sector level with Rum, Coffee and Jerk, and by the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office to assist in the protection of Jamaican products and to ensure that consumers are receiving authentic Jamaican products. We urge all Jamaican exporters to fully appreciate the value of Brand Jamaica and the importance of ensuring that their products are protected in all their markets with the necessary trade mark, certification mark, and/or collective mark. We appeal to all consumers who desire authentic Jamaican products to help us identify the infringements in the market. Let us together work to build Brand Jamaica and the Jamaican economy. Marjory Kennedy President

We will continue to give of our best The General Manager

T

he past year has been a very interesting one for me as I took on the role of general manager of the JEA. I must extend sincere thanks to the Board of Directors, Members and the Secretariat team for their support over the period. I look forward to our continued close collaboration as we work together to build Jamaica’s non-traditional export sector and ultimately realize a greater contribution to the GDP through export earnings and the creation of employment. Our Mission which states simply, “Committed to national development through exports”, has been at the forefront of the work we do. During the past year the Association has been strengthening its relationships with partner organizations as it implements critical initiatives to build the capacity and competitiveness of its members. These initiatives include the following: •

Continued partnership with JAMPRO and the Trade Board on the development and implementation of Phase II of the National Export Strategy (NES), in keeping with the JEA’s firm commitment to the development of the NES based on our belief that it is critical to the development of Jamaica’s export sector. Continued collaboration with agencies such as the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA); the European Union (EU) and Canadian authorities; the Bureau of Standards, and the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, among other Ministries to ensure compliance of Jamaican firms relative to the major export markets.

Working with international partners to develop and deliver technical and other forms of assistance to the export sector. Facilitating access to non-collateralized loans by our members to enable the purchasing of raw materials and small equipment, and the financing of short term receivables. Hosting of Seminars and Workshops aimed at educating and building the capacity of exporters in areas specially selected to increase productivity, efficiency and competitiveness. Facilitating Trade Shows and Trade Missions to provide exporters with the opportunity to identify new markets.

As a Business Support Organization, the JEA management and staff reaffirm our commitment to the provision of relevant and innovative services to improve the viability of our clients and to realize consistent growth in exports. The JEA will continue to advocate for more effective public and private sector partnerships to improve the climate for export development. I must commend the many exporters who continue to strive for excellence in the consistent production and delivery of goods and services which have contributed to the appeal and recognition of Brand Jamaica. In harmony with our Partners, Stakeholders and Members we will continue to give of our best as we work towards a more prosperous Jamaica.

The JEA at Work

After Sale Service Policy v Many exporters are of the view that only products that require repairs need an after sale service policy. This is not so as there are several factors which are critical to success in the export market. The three most important are quality, price and service. Satisfied customers are often repeat customers. Take time out to follow-up with the importer, inquiring if the goods have arrived and in what condition. (From: JEA Export Manual)

Jamaica Exporters’ Association: 49 Years Promoting Brand Jamaica

J

amaica was just four years into political Independence when the Jamaica Exporters’ Association (JEA) was established to lead the way in the expansion of exports to fuel the economic development of the new nation.

In the 49 years that have passed, the Association has grown and gains have been made, but there is more ground to cover and the journey continues. Today, the JEA is a 250-member private trade association, governed by a Board of Directors comprised of elected members and appointees involved in relevant areas of business and exportrelated activities. As the private sector agency promoting the development and growth of Jamaica’s exports, the JEA sees its role as integral to ensuring that Jamaican firms are competitive in the international market. The Association has been placing strong emphasis on enhancing the competitiveness and sustained growth of Jamaica’s nontraditional export sector, and there is full recognition of the direct correlation between successful exporting and a thriving micro enterprise sector. In fulfilling its mandate, the JEA partners with various local and international organizations to develop and implement programmes of support for export expansion. Advocacy, Training, Financing, Project Management, Technology, Export Promotions, Market Development Publications, and Market Information are the main areas of focus. The Association has built up an admirable record of successfully representing its membership of mainly small and medium-sized exporters, demonstrating knowledge, caring and effectiveness in addressing the varied issues faced by over 250 exporters from 17 sub-sector groups. Product categories represented include processed foods, fresh produce; horticulture; furniture and craft; chemicals; personal care; beverages and tobacco; textile and wearing apparel, building products; pharmaceuticals; electronics; export services and trading houses. The JEA has concentrated its attention over the years on building its business development services (BDS) to Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs). With a staff of thirteen, under the leadership of the general manager, the Association integrates a systematic approach in which market information; strategic planning; information technology; advocacy; operational and financial management; technical support, and export market development are critical components of the firm-level assistance to clients.

35

Strategic Alliances The Association has always been a proponent of strategic alliances, working with over 20 local, regional and international agencies and institutions and attributes much of its success to its ability to form strategic partnerships over the years. Partners include: USAID; The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA); European Union (EU), Department for International Development (DFID); Development Alternatives Incorporated (DAI), Chemonics International; Fintrac Inc.; Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF); Caribbean Export Development Agency; JAMPRO (Trade and Investment Jamaica); Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association (JMA) and the EXIM Bank. As the private sector agency promoting the development and growth of Jamaica’s exports, the JEA sees its role as integral to ensuring that Jamaican firms are competitive in the international market. Continuing a 40-Year Tradition: Jamaican Teas wins the JEA Champion Exporter Awards for 2014

I

n 2014, the family owned tea manufacturing company Jamaican Teas emerged as the Champion Exporter for its export achievements in 2013. In addition to the Champion Exporter Awards, the company also copped the trophy for the best Manufacturer, Category II (export earnings of US$1,000,000 to US$4,999,000). The Jamaica Exporters’ Association (JEA) Awards tradition goes back some 40 years. In 1966 the country had a booming traditional export sector, primarily exporting rum, sugar, banana, coffee and bauxite. As our manufacturing sector expanded so too did exporting and it was felt that there needed to be an association to nurture and support the developing non-traditional export sector. To meet this need, the JEA was established in 1966. The growth of non-traditional exports was encouraging. By 1975 it was felt that the hard work and the strides being made to develop the sector and establish Brand Jamaica should be recognized and rewarded. This led to the first JEA Export Awards ceremony in 1975, when Industrial Chemicals Limited was named Champion Exporter and received the Governor General's Trophy for outstanding performance and achievements during the previous year.

Jamaican Teas Ltd. The Champion Achieving export growth – ‘It can be done!’

W

hen our company began in 1967 as Tetley Tea Company (Jamaica) Ltd, its main focus was on producing black teas for the Jamaican market under licence using the Tetley brand. Over time, demand and sophistication in the local market grew and peppermint and other herbal infusions were added, namely Camomile, Earl Grey, Apple Cinnamon and Honey Lemon Ginseng Green tea to name a few. However, in 1995 the father and son team of Adeeb and John Mahfood acquired the then Tetley Tea Company and began a programme of expansion and innovation. Since then, the product range has been considerably expanded and the Caribbean Dreams brand was launched offering consumers unique herbal combinations and infusions. Today, with over 30 different types of teas, the company is the largest producer of teas in the Caribbean with almost half its products being exported to 13 Caribbean markets, United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Teas are also produced and developed through private label arrangements for a number of local and international companies. The team saw the great potential of the company and through visionary leadership made it what it is today - the largest producer of teas in the English-speaking Caribbean and Champion Exporter 2014 This enviable position was achieved through focus on three main strategic priorities:1) Exports- particularly to the Caribbean and the USA. 2) Diversification of product lines. 3) Increasing contract packing services. Jamaican Teas Limited (JTL) became a public company in 2010 and is listed on the Jamaica Junior Stock Exchange. The company continues to diversify its product offerings and is currently undergoing expansion through the addition of other product lines such as pantry products and investments in key growth areas. JTL now comprises three divisions, Manufacturing, Retail and Real Estate. Our Retail Division operates a chain of supermarkets in Jamaica with future expansion in the pipeline while our Real Estate Division develops housing and commercial properties in the Jamaican market.

We expect our export sales to increase over the next five years to 65% of total sales. This will be achieved by: •

increasing sales to existing export customers;

acquiring new export markets, in particular Africa, South and Central America, and

crossover into mainstream Hispanic market in the United States with emphasis on new product development tailored specifically to the palates of our customers

As a company, we believe in developing and offering quality products that are not only practical but safe and economical. Our food products are produced to the highest safety and quality standards and therefore provide wholesome benefits to our consumers. Efficiency and customer satisfaction as well as visionary and participatory leadership continue to be the guiding principles in all we do.

As we continue to grow our business through exports and product diversification, we know that it will take hard work, tenacity and visionary leadership that responds to and seeks opportunities. We are also mindful of the changing global complexities in international trade and business and are putting in place the necessary human and technical resources that can assist us in our growth and expansion objectives. With the local economy being very flat at the moment, we believe that engaging in exports is perhaps the only rewarding exercise for a Jamaican firm at this time. While the rewards can be sustainable and beneficial, we realize that there are inherent risks and that achieving export growth takes time and deliberate market development strategies. However, from experience we can say with confidence that for those with the vision and the fortitude, it can be done!

Bigger and Better in 2016 Plans are currently underway for the staging of Expo Jamaica 2016 the Caribbean’s largest trade show. The 2016 staging of the show will once again be hosted by the Jamaica Exporters’ Association (JEA) and the Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association (JMA) in collaboration with JAMPRO from April 14 – 17, in Kingston, Jamaica. Expo Jamaica is the region’s largest manufacturers’ and exporters’ trade event, with an overall mandate to: • expand the export of Jamaican goods and services; •

increase local sales of Jamaican goods through increased awareness of Jamaican brands;

forge joint venture/partnerships between exhibitors and potential investors;

strengthen the sectoral/industry linkages between hotels, other services, agriculture and distributive trade;

reinforce the contribution of the local manufacturing and export sectors to the development of the economy, strengthen the linkages between the Jamaican Diaspora and manufacturers, and,

enhance Jamaica’s image as a viable business destination as well as foster increased linkages with key partners to protect and build Brand Jamaica.

Once again manufacturers will be able to showcase their products to full advantage. At the last Expo there were impressive displays, featuring some 2,000 locally-made goods and services covering a wide range of product and service categories. International as well as local buyers will have excellent opportunities to take advantage of business matchmaking facilities with manufacturers and exporters and establish partnerships to source Jamaican products and services. On designated Buyers’ Days at the last Expo some 275 local and 200 international Buyers’ including purchasing officers and managers from the retail trade, hospitality industry, pharmacies, supermarkets among others, engaged the exhibitors in one-onone discussions as they sourced new products and services for distribution, sale and utilization within their respective businesses. Buyers hailed from the Caribbean, North America, South America and Europe. Business leads were generated among exhibitors and buyers and in some instances orders were placed and sales generated. Several new and interesting features were introduced at Expo Jamaica 2014 and the Planning Committee is determined to make Expo Jamaica 2016 even bigger and better.

Turks and Caicos Islands Trade Mission – A productive exercise

T

he year 2015 started on a high note for exporters who participated in a three-day Trade Mission to the Turks and Caicos Island. It was hosted by the Jamaica Exporters’ Association (JEA) in partnership with the Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association, Caribbean Export Development Agency, InterCaribbean Airways and the Providenciales Chamber of Commerce. There were nine Jamaicans participating, representing over 21 Jamaican companies. They met with Allan Eden-Hutchinson the Jamaican Honorary Consul to the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Board of Directors and members of the Providenciales Chamber of Commerce and representatives of the wider business community. The mission was hailed by participants as a productive exercise and a big success. All the companies represented were engaged by several potential customers and established serious business leads. Some companies received orders.

Highlight of the visit was a mini-exposition at which delegates were able to showcase their products and services to the over 200 Chamber of Commerce members as well as others in the wider business community, including buyers/distributors and consumers. Among the products represented on the trade mission were natural insect repellent; anti-itch lotion; roll-on deodorant; spray insecticide, flavoured/ infused honey; ginger extract; lime juice; peppered shrimp; solomon gundy; vinaigrettes; salad dressings; pumpkin ketchup; spring water; hair care products; personal care products; sauces; spices; canned vegetables; building paints; poultry; cigars; herbal teas; fresh produce such as herbs, fruits, and vegetables; sea salt; iodized salt; craft items and sportswear. In response to the very positive feedback from the Turks and Caicos Islands and the participants, the JEA is considering a follow-up trade mission with a larger contingent of Jamaican companies. The aim is to include some of the more established Jamaican brands, as well as individuals and firms in the services sector.

Canada – A growing market for Jamaican exports

F

or years the Canadian market has been one of the primary markets for Jamaican exporters, ranking in the top four. Canada has a large Jamaican population (including persons of Jamaican descent), and it has been on the increase; more than 21,000 Jamaicans migrated to that country over the last ten years. With a significant number of nationalists residing in cold, faraway Canada, it is easy to understand the pull factor for Jamaican products. In 2014, to gain a better understanding of the market and the opportunities in Canada, a Jamaica Exporters’ Association (JEA) delegation comprising directors Hernal Hamilton, Idelle Brown and Natalie Grandison, and staff member Matthew Ramdeen went on a Study Tour of Ontario. The team visited government agencies, distribution centres, retail outlets as well as final consumers of Jamaicanbased products. This was funded through the Planning Institute of Jamaica/Economic Partnership Agreement I (PIOJ/EPA I) Programme. A primary objective of the Study Tour was to strengthen partnerships between the JEA and the Trade Facilitation Office of Canada as well as the Association’s relationship with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Building relationships is an important aspect of the JEA’s efforts to enhance its abilities to provide technical assistance to Jamaican firms seeking to improve their compliance with food safety and regulatory requirements for exports to Canada.

and requirements of the market they plan to enter. Canada, which has two primary languages, requires that all products are labelled in both English and French. Products failing to meet this requirement will be rejected at the point of border inspection. Price Sensitivity:The Canadian market is highly price sensitive, particularly in respect to ethnic products. While Jamaican fresh produce have a distinct advantage in quality, the market is not prepared to pay more than a certain amount at any time, resulting in serious competition from countries supplying similar products, such as the Dominican Republic in the case of yams. Cross over to Mainstream Market: Collaboration and consistency are two critical components which Jamaican exporters must embrace if they are to be successful in penetrating the mainstream food stores in the Canadian market. Shelf space in these supermarkets attract a premium price and the inability of a company to fulfill an order may result in the company being charged a penalty fee if the distributor is unable to fill that shelf space.

JEA’s Hernal Hamilton and Natalie Grandison in Danforth Food Market.

The visit provided many opportunities for the team to acquire valuable information on several matters critical to the success of Jamaican exporters, some of which are outlined below: Food Safety Regulations: The Safe Food for Canadians Act, which was then being discussed, subsequently came into effect in January 2015. Labelling Requirements: It is critical that Jamaican exporters, particularly new entrants, understand the culture

Your Export Plan v Exporting is only marketing in an international atmosphere and as in all marketing there are proven methods of setting about it that help to ensure success and make the operation profitable. The four basic stages in making a plan for export are: • Investigate your likely markets and select your key market • Research those markets identified in depth • Prepare your plan for those markets • Implement the plan rigorously (From: JEA Export Manual)

Spur Tree Jamaican Seasonings ‘Last year we more than doubled our exports’ n a hot day in February, the plant was sizzling with energy. Every member of the team was focused on getting stacks of flavourful seasoning products on to a container destined for New York.

O

Jamaican company, now specializes in production, distribution and sales of a wide range of quality wet seasonings and sauces, meeting the needs of both the retail and food service markets for authentic Jamaican flavours.

This is not an unusual happening at Spur Tree Spices Jamaica Limited’s factory located in the Garmex Free Zone on Marcus Garvey Drive. The export orders keep pouring in. “Last year we more than doubled our exports”, Albert Bailey, the upbeat Chief Executive Officer informed our visiting team. “We keep looking for opportunities and when we find them we capitalize on them.”

In 2014, Spur Tree achieved overall sales growth of 117% over the previous year, driven primarily by a 171% growth in exports. The Company was also not sleeping on the job in the local retail market, which grew by 44% and efforts are underway to build greater brand equity in the local trade. The year brought a capital injection of over J$16 million and saw the launch of 5 new product lines. Staff increased by 50%. There was also investment in Information Technology and other infrastructure development to facilitate continued growth and improved efficiency.

Nodding in assent was Executive Director, Dennis Hawkins. Other members of the leadership, Mohan Jagnarine another Executive Director and Anand James, Director were not present. In 2006, the company started operations in Mandeville with a small commercial blender, making bulk jerk seasoning which it supplied to its solitary food service customer in New York by Air Jamaica. The company’s next big opportunity came when Grace Kennedy Limited agreed to distribute the bulk seasoning to local hotels, restaurants and canteens through its food service division. Things have certainly changed over the nine years. Spur Tree Spices Jamaica Limited, a wholly owned

“We are in major chains in the North Eastern belt of the US, including Restaurant Depot/Jetro (Cash and Carry), Shop Rite which is the largest independent supermarket chain, and Food Bazaar,” Mr. Bailey said. C. Kenneth Imports is the company’s main North Eastern US distributor. NAC Foods Inc is a sub-distributor. The Spur Tree label can also be seen in other US locations as well as Canada, the UK and Caribbean markets, and of course, here at home in Jamaica. Grace Kennedy and Frozen Delights are the local distributors The company has achieved much in a very short time, steadily expanding its operations, product range and markets and breaking new ground in exports. Just three years after start-up, Spur Tree won the Jamaica Exporters’ Association (JEA) Award for Best MSME Exporter and the Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association (JMA) Champion Small Exporter JAMPRO Cup. Several other major awards for excellence have followed over the years. Reflecting on the company’s achievements Mr. Hawkins spoke of the tremendous capacity of SME’s for growth. “It’s easier for SME’s to double their labour force than large companies. SME’s account for more than 55% of total employment, and if even a quarter of SME’s can double their numbers there will be a huge increase in job creation. Every big company started out as an SME… To grow you have to think outside the box and work very hard.” He said

that export manufacturers should not expect to do what they did twenty years ago. “We are not dealing with the same market. The Diaspora is changing. Packaging will have to change - labels will have to change- but the market is out there waiting across all demographics…” Spur Tree has been discovering and successfully catering to its market with four main categories of Jamaican products: the acclaimed, convenient onestep seasonings (“just add meat”); premium quality sauces featuring the distinctive Scotch Bonnet pepper; traditional favourites – canned ackees and callaloo and a festival mix - and the "Ready to Eat" and “Ready to Cook” lines. These lines of “Ready to Eat” and “Ready to Cook” meat and poultry prepared with Spur Tree seasonings, grew out of the company’s marination programme introduced in 2010 in a few Shop Rite supermarkets, in recognition of the desire of retailers to add value to their product range. The comprehensive retail programme included customized in-store recipe manuals, training for staff and point of sale material. Hot deli products such as rotisserie jerk and curry chicken and the chilled, poultry and seafood seasoned with Spur Tree bulk seasoning and co-branded with the Company’s label, are now in many major US supermarkets. Working on the basis that Jamaica is a very strong brand and that exporters need to support the image of the brand with quality products, the company pays close attention to all aspects of the process “from the farm to the customer”. It begins with quality locally grown produce and the company is proud of its strong linkages with local farmers across the island as they collaborate to raise the consistency and quality of their fresh inputs. Currently there is also an arrangement with the Garvey Maceo School for the supply of fresh Scotch Bonnet pepper in the effort to encourage various local interests to invest in providing raw material inputs to the growing sector of the economy that Spur Tree represents. New York operations were established last year to facilitate weekly promotional and merchandising activities aimed at increasing sales and raising Spur Tree brand awareness and visibility.“You have to go into the market and do the work on the ground to get the product off the shelves,” said Mr. Bailey. “We do four to five promotions every week, including demos and tasting. Distribution … is just the beginning. The process is not finished until the customer connects emotionally with the product”

The principals of the company have a wealth of food service experience and are passionate about their products. As Mr. Bailey explained, “We understand food. We understand customers. This is what led us to develop recipes using our own products. We will go and show our customers how to marinate, package and sell marinated meats.” But with the many brands of spices and seasonings on the market, locally and overseas, what about competition? “You get lazy when there is little competition,” was the swift response. “Good competition keeps you strategizing and innovative. You also learn from others...” Mr. Hawkins added, “Competition is only negative when the market is limited. You have to find a way to make yourself different. You have to do a lot of market research. Our aim is always to offer a better product than the brand leader at a lower price. We are looking long term, not just selling products but building a brand. …Everybody is looking at the same shelf space. We are constantly looking at ways to expand the market.” Positivity, passion, product excellence, and people on board who catch the vision are some of Spur Tree’s success ingredients. Add expertise, thorough knowledge of the market place, boldness, creativity and sheer hard work. There was good, positive energy coming from the team working at the Spur Tree Spices Jamaica Limited factory. The enticing aroma of Scotch Bonnet pepper pervaded the space, as the New York bound products being loaded promised more export earnings and provided more reasons to be hopeful about the nation’s economic prospects.

West Indian Sea Island Cotton Minding the ‘White Gold’

T

he golden prospects of West Indian Sea Island Cotton (WISIC), patently recognized since the early 17th Century, have sired diverse interests from around the world. At the turn of the 21st Century stakeholders are buying into this potential billion-dollar foreign exchange earning industry with multiple advantages. Yet all this is for naught unless stakeholders recognize and protect two high priority WISIC advantages - its high quality and trademark. There are several amazing facets that © 2015 Yisrael Boland make this ‘white gold’ an enviable export product. The West Indian Sea Island Cotton presents a triad of advantages (comparative, competitive and geographical) that fluently speak the language of the market. This rare fibre known for its long silky soft weave pattern predictably commands a premium price internationally. There is also awesome potential for value addition. High-end apparel producers, such as Spoerry in Switzerland, have been using Sea Island cotton in their production for over a hundred years. In Jamaica, the Jamaica Agricultural Development Foundation (JADF) envisions ’a fully vertically integrated WISIC industry, which will see the lint produced converted to yarn; then fabric; and eventually moving to local designers and manufacturers.’ 1 With a maximum five months for maturity and options to utilize manifold aspects of the cotton plant, possibilities for value addition are wide. The JADF is ready to use the lint and seeds in creating a variety of products. All WISIC products must wear the badge of purity commensurate with the established standards and Trademark. There is an inherited high level of brand recognition with lineage to the 17th Century WISC Trademark registered by the British. This WISIC Trademark is protected by the West Indian Sea Island Cotton Association (WISICA). JADF is a member of WISICA, representing Jamaica. ‘WISICA is a strong institution taking care of Sea Island cotton; maintaining quality and standards, policing, protecting and ensuring the trademark is registered in various countries.’2 Under WISICA’s regulation there is no contamination. WISICA exists to ensure only 100% West Indian Sea Island Cotton is used. This organization ensures the purity of all the raw material produced and certifies genuine West Indian Sea Island Cotton. A distinct hologram is used to indicate 100% genuine WISIC. Only cotton with the numbered WISIC hologram certificate is guaranteed as genuine. WISICA’s protective arms logically extend to value added products.

Here ‘the WISIC trademark is protected through a lineal licensing arrangement – at every stage of the process licenses will have to be obtained from WISICA.’ This high level of protection provided through WISICA maintains and secures market confidence.3 While this rare fibre is only being produced in a few West Indian islands, its presence visibly stands on maintaining the premium quality 100% WISIC at every level - from raw material to end products. This involves careful cultivation practices. The stages from germination to harvesting must be carefully vetted. There is a precise management programme designed for WISIC fields. WISICA and JADF along with the University of the West Indies have spent years researching in order to maintain the quality of WISIC and increase yields. Today the world is experiencing a resurgence of the Sea Island cotton industry and here at home JADF is leading a successful WISIC rejuvenation process. This rare strain of cotton, first introduced to West Indian soil in the 15th Century, has easily tested the fabric of time. Its fine structure has been preserved over centuries; it is fairly insulated at all levels, and it enjoys a sustained unprompted high demand. This West Indian ‘white gold’ is here to stay. Y.Boland

Strategies for Growth

Exporting - Wrong and Right Reasons v Some wrong reasons for going into export are: - Personal ambition - Corporate prestige - Overseas travel possibilities v Some right motives for a company or individual to export are: - Unique product with little or no competition in the foreign markets - Continuing growth in sales and profits to prevent the company from folding - Belief that overseas market will yield higher profits - Looking for more sales opportunity - Stronger local competition - Production capacity becoming too large for local market (From: JEA Export Manual)

A practical return on a promising initiative The National Export Strategy

I

n 2008 the Government of Jamaica launched the National Export Strategy (NES), an ambitious set of 325 initiatives that was designed to address the lag that was being experienced by the export market. The Strategy aimed at maximising the export sector’s contribution to economic and social development by implementing initiatives designed to boost competitiveness. This effort called for a collaborative approach to export development involving eight priority sectors, thirteen crosscutting initiatives and a group of stakeholders including the Jamaica Exporters’ Association, the Jamaica Trade Board and the Jamaica Promotions Corporation. The NES was developed under the leadership of the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, with technical assistance from the International Trade Centre and partial funding from the Private Sector Development Programme, a joint initiative of the Government of Jamaica and the European Union. Of the 232 initiatives implemented in the NES priority sectors, 66% were realised. The Fashion Industry recorded the highest rate of implementation with 91% of initiatives successfully executed. Mining, due to fluctuations in the international market among other uncontrollable factors, recorded the lowest rate of implementation at 36% with 43 initiatives still in progress by the end of the Strategy in March 2013. Overall, 63% of the total of 325 priority sector and cross-cutting initiatives were implemented – a practical return on a promising strategy. The success of the first phase offered a crucial stepping stone for the second phase of the NES, scheduled to be launched in 2015. Through the review of the first phase of the NES and extensive stakeholder consultations, it was recognised that the key to improving on the programme’s prior achievements was to focus on a smaller number of priority sectors and cross-cutting initiatives that would reap the most benefits from the programme. This would be accompanied by the delegation of initiatives with quantifiable objectives amongst accountable stakeholders. NES 2013-2018, which is currently in development, is well positioned to build upon the success of its predecessor by increasing our local export capacity and strengthening our partnerships to ensure a more impactful performance on Jamaica’s export sector.

Jamaica’s Logistics Hub: A platform to develop an export-centric economy

T

he world has changed. In the last 30 years it has advanced to become a digital world and an environment favouring globalized export-centric businesses. In this time, Jamaica has opened its borders to facilitate international trade, gained access to foreign markets and allowed for the development of a competitive marketplace. Businesses must therefore adopt an export-centric model if they are serious about wealth creation. The Jamaica Logistics Hub initiative is a bold response to the changes in international consumerism and trade within the context of a logistics centered economy. It features as a key pillar in national development strategy and the growth agenda. The initiative advances the ideals of a logistics-centric economy and the transformation of the medium, small and micro sized enterprises into “micro-multinationals through a sustained programme of capacity-building and the adoption of globally competitive practices and standards. This means preparing local firms to integrate into global production and supplier networks. In this regard, the Jamaica Logistics Hub is a strategic anchor for the development of a globally competitive platform for economic growth. It is notable that the export-led growth targeted by the Logistics Hub Initiative requires critical transportation and industrial infrastructure, i.e. hard infrastructure. This must be supported by legislative and administrative regimes, so-called soft infrastructure that can speed up the flow of business transactions in a manner that encourages investors to establish businesses in Jamaica in preference to regional and global competitors. Competing in the global economy demands that the domestic business environment be significantly improved to operate at global standards. The Jamaica Logistics Hub Initiative therefore presents a unique opportunity through which to build the necessary capacity to meet the demands of the global marketplace. Dr. Eric Deans Chairman, Logistics Hub Task Force Ministry of Industry Investment and Commerce

NCBJ preparing local businesses for global markets - ‘Certify Locally, Compete Globally’

A

s the government moves toward the establishment of the Logistics Hub, the National Certification Body of Jamaica (NCBJ) will play a very important role in assisting local exporters and manufacturers to enhance the quality of their services and the competitiveness of their products. The NCBJ which is the independent certification unit of the Bureau of Standards Jamaica, has the capability to certify management systems to internationally recognized standards such as ISO 9001. Companies that are certified have a competitive edge as a result of the influence and confidence that an ISO certification carries in international markets. Manager of the NCBJ Jacqueline Scott-Brown recognizes the importance of encouraging local businesses to invest in international certification and is leading the agency into a new phase of growth that includes increased focus on how the agency can contribute to a Logistics centered economy and stakeholder engagement. She was quoted in an NCBJ media release as saying, “We are currently operating in a borderless economy, where consumers are no longer constrained by geographical boundaries. …New opportunities are emerging for entrepreneurs daily and new markets are opening up far and wide. The Logistics Hub for example, will present new opportunities for our people, which will compel us to adopt a culture of quality in our trade practices.” She listed quality people, quality processes, quality in decision making and best practices in service delivery as essential components of the quality culture. These components, she explained, will benefit Jamaica as it seeks to develop a ‘logistics-centered’ economy and attract foreign business operators. Mrs. Scott-Brown noted that whilst the open market allows organizations to seek certification from overseas based certification bodies, there is much benefit to be derived from choosing the NCBJ, the locally based Certification Body, as a viable option. 64

The NCBJ manager went on to say, “In addition to significant savings on the cost of certification, the NCBJ understands and appreciates the business environment in which local businesses operate and can approach the process in a tailored and practical way. The NCBJ also enables businesses to certify their operations to internationally recognized management systems standards, that ensure high levels of efficiency and return on their investments.” As part of its thrust to engage and encourage exporters and other key stakeholders to utilize the NCBJ, the unit is improving its own corporate image with an informal rebranding campaign that includes a new logo and a simple but powerful tagline ‘Certify Locally, Compete Globally’. Mrs. Scott-Brown has challenged all stakeholders to play their role in streamlining business practices, enhance trade and protect consumers’ health and safety by promoting certification along the supply chain. “Quality is the pillar that ensures growth, prosperity and sustainability,” she said. The NCBJ is accredited by ANSI-ANSQ National Accreditation Board; a US based accreditation body and meets the requirements of ISO/IEC 17021 and ISO/IEC TS 17021-3. The unit was recently re-accredited to certify management systems to ISO 9001:2008, for 15 International Accreditation Forum (IAF) scopes or industry codes including Agriculture; Forestry and Fishing; Food Products; Beverages and Tobacco; Paper and Paper Products; Chemicals and Chemical Products; Information Technology; Education; Printing Companies; Public Administration; Concrete; Cement, and Engineering services.
