Jamaica in world’s top-10 again

The parish council office, Falmouth

Spotlight on Trelawny First we had the improved north coast road. Then the Trelawny Stadium. Now the new port of Falmouth is set to open in December. The world’s largest cruise liners will follow. Falmouth has the chance to repeat its strength of the late eighteenth century, as one of Jamaica’s leading ports. Investment of US$0.25 billion is flowing into the area. The government is even looking at declaring Falmouth a resort area. The town has much to offer, beyond the port and market. It has the largest collection of intact Georgian buildings in the Caribbean. See www.falmouthjamaica.org. Some housing developments are already happening. More will follow. Now is a good time to take a closer look at Falmouth and Trelawny.

Cockpit Country, Trelawny

Jamaica continues to be a top-10 travel destination. For overall appeal, www.worldtravelguide.net has Jamaica alongside Cuba and the Dominican Republic. For unique settings, we all know many great places. But now www.lonelyplanet.com has even placed the soon to be reopened Goldeneye location of James Bond creator Ian Fleming as number 6 in the world’s top tourist destinations. Jamaica has so much potential. All of us living abroad have such opportunities to help Jamaica while helping ourselves.

Oil may help us just like it’s helped Trinidad The Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica has recently confirmed that seismic structures suggest that upto 3 billion barrels of crude oil could be found off Jamaica. Sagres Energy has until March 2011 to decide its next steps in the search for oil. As imported oil makes up 90 per cent of Jamaica’s energy needs, with an estimated US$2.5 billion oil import bill for 2010, any discovery would offer a big boost to Jamaica. We only need to look to Trinidad to see just what a difference a serious oil find can make.
