Brief | 3

-MotivationIt is shown that many travellers in UK find difficult to travel by train. The existing train system have many problems, including the ticket is hard to read. And this might bring inconvenience to the users. To help passengers who face problems with the train services, BT provides a smart search service to help train travellers to search useful infomation that they need.

-Target UsersThe target users are train travellers in UK especially international travellers, because their poor English ability and not familiar with this country.

-AimIdentify and explore ways to provide reliable and credible information in order to optimise the User’s Experience.

-Objectives1. Identify ways to perform a Search and retrieve information. 2. Identify key aspects on how to deliver information to the consumer in a reliable and credible way. 3. Develop a concept to illustrate the findings.

-Project ScopeA app based on smart phone.

-Time-PlanThe concept and suggested solution would be delivered to B.T on 13th of May through a presentation at B.T Headquarter in Astral Park. A written report of the work process is to be submitted at Loughborough Design School Office between 12:30 and 14:30 on the 27th of May.

-Client DeliverableA presentation, booklet and a video will be delivered to B.T company at the time of the scheduled presentation on 13th of May, and the whole design process would be updated on blog continuously.

5 Problems arise in the train journey might confuse a foreign traveller who have language barrier and lack of local information. To solve these problems we need to search for more relevant information.

This APP has tickets, routes, stops and live information parts. The live information in this APP is convenient to use but the journey search is unsatisfied.

Detail information

An interesting London journey plan APP base on 3D map, its travel relevant information and recommendation module are good, but the navigation part is not satisfied. Furthermore, this APP has no 2D map, which is inconvenient in actual use.

Free texting, voice messages, video calls and social network in your pocket, the interface of WeChat is clean and clear. The good point of WeChat is it divide it main function into 4 catagories(shown left), which is easy for beginner to understand.

Users can discover the world’s content with an endless variety of magazines, and after create an account, users need to select their areas of interests, then the app will customize your reading material. We think the log in and selecting interests part could be reference.

Participant: Song Xue Nationality: China Key points: Ticket buying: I usually buy ticket at the ticket office, it is always cheaper than buy in the ticket machine. I seldom use the internet to buy tickets but I will use it to check the timetable. If you buy ticket in the internet, it take time to get the ticket from the ticket machine. Train stations: finding the right plateform could be very difficult, the infoemtion board is helpless that I always need help of the station staffs.

Participant: Yi Qin Nationality: China Key points: Ticket buying: some times have no change when buy a short journey ticket, but if I buy it through internet, this would not be a problems. Train station: if i go to the station too early, I do not know where to spend my time; I sometimes need to find the toilet and luggage store room During the journey: I usually log into my social APPs and chat with my friends, mabye I will ask their recommodations for my journey.

Participant: Cheng Sai Nationality: China Key points: Ticket buying: it take time to find the cheapest ticket in different website. Train stations: the Electric information board is take time to read and understand; and live information is useful before and during the journey. During the journey: Knowing the weather, transportation and tourist information will be helpful in the journey; I will exit the station by following flow when reach.

Participant: Shi Tian Nationality: China Key points: Ticket buying: group ticket is sometimes cheaper than buying one ticket with young person card; the train ticket is poor layout that it makes travellers confuse in their first time travel by train in UK. Train station: it is easy to find the platform if you are familiar with the station; live information is necessary when waiting. During the journey: Need to know hotel, city transportation and tourist information; the indicating systems in big stations are not good enough.

After the APP identified the ticket, there is a translation button to translate the main information of the ticket. If you think it is the right information, then push the tick. If it fails to identified, just try the other search input method.

34 | Final Concept One of the core of TripTailor is a smart search system, it helps users to search information in advance than they need, in this case of travel from Nottingham to London, before users get on train it will provides navigation and train infomation, such as timmer.

Hello, this is my first time in UK, and with TripTailor I learned the history of many cities.


35 After users get on the train, TripTailor knows that they are relax, so it will help users to search live information such as weather, train calling at & the history/interesting things about these cities. It also help you to pre-search what you will like in your destination

Finding the right way to the right platform could be not easy when you are not familiar with the train station.

If you open the navigation button, then it takes you to a real scene guiding (with your camera opened).

This smart search project is in fact offering new ways to search, collect, provided and presents information to the users. And this project can be extended into airport, coach station and shopping mall in the future development.
