arch. dorms Located at the site of four existing historical buildings, this architecture student dormitory fits 100 students and provides public spaces for shopping and dining. As the designer I felt the importance of integrating the existing buildings with the new additions. Being a dorm for architecture students the design needed to be an inspiration and provoke thought.

The concept for my design was to create intersecting spaces to form voids. These voids created spots of social interest. Wherever people’s paths intersect, there is an intentional interaction. From these masses another concept arose, use contemporary form and materials that directly contrast the old buildings. To make this concept possible the designs needed to become completely opposite in every aspect.

The location of this site is in Downtown San Antonio. The goal of the project was to discover an urban space in need of an architectural intervention. The intervention needed to activate the space and create a new experience. The site chosen is located at a bustling spot that serves as a hub for sixteen bus routes. I investigated the spot and analyzed the rhythm of the energy on the site. It became apparent to me that the site needed a bus stop. The bus stop I created would interact with the people along with the schedule of the bus routes. As people sit at the designated benches for their bus they will begin to recognize a pattern between the architecture and the rhythm that people leave to catch their bus. The process for this project directly relates time with form. This became possible through the use of a time line which conceptually turns something that is not physical into something graphic that I can respond to . Each peak represents a new bus route at a certain anticipated time. 0

sky condo The concept for this project began with a standard residential unit design that connected to a central core. The central corconsist of two elevators and firestairs. The units were strategically rotated to create views and spaces. These spaces offered places in which the tennants can enjoy outdoor living among plants and trees.

Located on a spot densely impacted by the urban population, the sky condo is a new approach to high end residential living. Utilizing one of a cites main attractions, the river walk, tenants can lease their condos to tourists to gain monetary benefits. This hotel/ condominium takes full advantage of today’s technologies to produce an intriguing, invigorating lifestyle.

metamorphic fashion/ architecture The garment on the left was a design created by myself and these other fashion projects were created by three other students. The impetus for all four outfits is a variation on one common theme: the exploration of how four primary geometric components encompass and contain light, the body they envelope and each other. Each of the four vestments was created via numerous iterations using the software program, Rhino, in conjunction with built physical models, laser-cut plastic mylar, black linen and LED lighting.

The garments interact with their environment via a depth detecting sonar sensor, embedded within, and actively responding to a continuously changinging landscape Each design reaches its brightest aura when they find themselves next to each other, one foot away, mimicking the anticipation and triumph of human relationship.

Our four costumes were featured at the AIA San Antonio Beaux Arts Ball and a matching project was created for Luminaria. Luminaria is an annual light event in downtown San Antonio. The design for Luminaria consisted of two metal framed arches and a black mesh that held our geometric LED lit components.

PROCESS DEVELOPMENT

The program for this New Orleans residence comes with very specific goals. The design has a budget of $100,000, cannot exceed 880 sq. ft. and needs to be seven feet off the ground. The solutions for these problems require that I as a designer think in an innovative and unique way. The concept for this project is embedded within the material, shipping containers. The primary impact of the shipping container, conceptually, is the shape. The aim is to create a definite form that is modular and can be repeated, arranged, chopped and manipulated as a component for different effects. Rather than keeping the containers raw and unwelcoming, a shading device is included as a contrasting material. This device is also a structure that vines can grow up, to eventually cover the home. It is important to note that shipping containers qualify as a recycled material. There may be a way to have them donated but altogether they are a bargain. Used shipping containers are always being liquidated. Used shipping containers cost usually $1,200 ea. which is perfect for the $100,000 budget.

Using Maya techniques which we had learned in class, a base module was created. Another fascimilie of this module was then designed. Between the base model shape and the fascimilie, blend shapes emerge. The intensity of these blends is determined by a distance created. All shapes are connected to this point and act similarly. As the point is pulled away from the aperture field the blendshapes bloom into a volumetric shape. As the point is moved closer however the blend-shape seems to be more of a surface.

As part of the assignment a ten second video was created wich shows each blendshape in motion in certain chosen views. Furthermore to strengthen our own digital experience it was made a requirement to produce a 3d print of the module , which can be seen on the left hand side

The purpose of this studio project was to explore the materiality of EVA foam. Through much process a set number of techniques were derived. This consisted of several characteristics which can be seen in the physical models. Pinching with string and the twisting of the strands. After the first semester mid review the class was asked to relate our process work to a body of water. Through the selection of the body of water an ecology was chosen to be mimicked. The body of water chosen for this project was mangroves. Mangroves were chosen because they would provide porosity. They intersect water. Furthermore they provide a safe haven for multiple species.
