Selected teachers and students partook in the trial online classes conducted from July 9-17 through Zoom in preparation for the school’s transition from face-to-face classroom setup to the online learning delivery guided by the Learning Continuity Program's "Alternative Instruction Management System" or AIMS. The online system was developed after the Interagency Task Force for Infectious Diseases (IATF) set restrictions on in-person interaction due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Agustina Dela Cruz, the administrator of the Learning Continuity Program of the school, said, since the virtual environment is an unexplored field for both students and teachers alike, tests were done to determine what “will work best” for the online classes.

Bulacan started their mass testing campaign after 1,428 test kits costing P5 million arrived from the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Molecular Laboratory in Mandaluyong City. Governor Daniel Fernando emphasized the need to test the frontliners and the suspected carriers quickly to reduce the number of people being infected by COVID-19.

"As the swabbing test kits

there were lots of testing the waters, which will work best, which will not. It was a challenging experience but at the same time, it also molded our character,” Dela Cruz said. As part of the Learning Continuity Program, members of the faculty underwent training in preparation for the online classes, but even after their sessions, different academic areas would conduct their own online demos. “[We] started to have trainings with Sir Gary Garcia, a certified Google Educator and when we’re not having trainings with him, each subject area conducted online teaching demo via Zoom and the objective of each demo is for the rest of team to learn something new, to feel inspired, to feel empowered that yes, we can make it work,” the Learning Continuity Program Administrator stated. However, even though the school made preparations for online discussions, she said that internet connectivity could

be a common problem teachers and students may face as lessons are conducted. “I think that the challenge would be the internet connection [because] that is something that is variable among the learners and teachers…the internet connectivity is something that is out of our control,” she said. Dela Cruz said that licensed Zoom accounts will be used for online classes in order to address problems concerning Internet connectivity and other Zoom issues. According to the school’s page, the Learning Continuity Program will be continued until the IATF and DepEd’s mandate to shift to the traditional education setup and “the discovery of a vaccine” in which case parents “may opt for in-person or faceto-face classes.”

The Philippine Arena Complex, after being turned over by the Iglesia ni Cristo to the government, has been converted into a quarantine center and is set to receive COVID-19 patients. The “We Heal as One Center”, located in Ciudad de Victoria, Bocaue, Bulacan, is a collaboration of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) and MVP Group of Companies. The conversion of the facility is part of the government’s "locate, isolate, and cure" strategy. Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) President and CEO Vince Dizon announced last April 3 that the Philippine Arena will be transformed into a "mega quarantine facility" for suspected COVID-19 cases in Central Luzon. Besides forming a mega quarantine facility for COVID-19 patients, Dizon said they will also trace other possible carriers of the virus as a part of their strategy to reduce the number of people infected by COVID-19.

Molecular Laboratory , to be tested. (PHO-PH), said the results of PRC’s swab tests will be available after five to seven days The Bulacan Provincial Health Office (BPHO) assured the public that by the end of May, all results of the mass swab testing will be released. Fernando said swab testing is preferable than the rapid test because patients still need to undergo the swab test even though they already passed the latter. The rapid antibody test kits can produce results within at least an hour, but it can only detect the antibodies in an individual and not COVID-19. The swab test, on the other hand, is more accurate in detecting the virus itself.

The Educational sector of the Philippines is undergoing a paradigm shift to online classes due to the spread of Covid-19 to resume the flow of learning amid the current nationwide lockdown. Universities, schools, and colleges are anticipated to comply with E-learning because of the expected extension of the lockdown caused by the rising number of Coronavirus cases in the country. It is believed that it is a “strategic action sequence” that would help the educational field of

the country. The adaptation of digital technology for educational purposes has been an ongoing discussion until today. Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairman J. Prospero De Vera III aims to decongest classrooms that targets to discourage the use of E-learning. The option for “flexible learning” intends to lessen the number of students who attends school and at the same time to practice social distancing so that the health of the students will not be deprived, De Vera said. He also expressed that “Flexible Learning” utilizes other methods to cater lessons for the students without the use of internet-connectivity such as take-home assignments and learning packets.

Senator Risa Hontiveros ranted on social media over the geotag “Philippines, Province of China” after becoming an option in social media apps due to the “resemblance of the Philippine islands slowly getting conquered.” “Sabi ng ilan, joke lang naman daw itong ‘Philippines, Province of China’ sa social media. Pero nakakagalit pakinggan,” Hontiveros’ post on Twitter wrote. The senator pointed out that it seems as if the country’s fishermen are getting bullied in the Philippines’ oceans. Hontiveros also mentioned the cultural-feature program “Wow China” which is being aired in Radyo Pilipinas, a state-owned AM radio station. T h e s e n a t o r said the

“joke” sounds like the contents of the radio program and sees it as a propaganda for the East Asian Nation that has persisted in showing force over disputed territories in the West Philippine Sea. Despite the tag’s echo of the country’s islands being taken over, Hontiveros still remains positive and urged Filipinos to mass report the geotag. “Kahit ‘biro’ pa itong Philippines, Province of China na geotag, ‘wag nating hayaang ma-normalize ito. Let’s mass report!” Hontiveros tweeted. “Let’s go! We’re not a province of China. Not now, not ever!” Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin said, on the other hand, Chinese citizens will not take the tags seriously. He then assured that if they do, there will be consequences. Back in 2018, President Rodrigo Duterte, who has agreed to questionable dealings with China, even joked that the Philippines should be a province of China.

“It does not have to be purely online; it can include an offline system. The idea is you decongest the school because you cannot go back to the

the areas he visited in the country with no internet connectivity. Espina also expressed his concern over leaving people in the dark after being cut from one of the country’s primary source of news. Another Twitter user came to criticize those who have been cheering over ABS-CBN’s shutdown highlighting the people whose everyday lives depend on the network not just for entertainment but as a means of acquiring vital information. The user’s post also talks about other’s perception of watching TV as a privilege that they would always have access to information when one station is shutdown but a different story for some that views it as a need especially during the time of pandemic and calamity.

usual classroom set-up with 50 students because of the COVID-19 problem,” he added. Meanwhile, Albay 2nd district Rep. Joey Salceda expressed that education online is “socially unjust” especially for those who lack facilities that it only worsens situations of quarantined families by initiating additional expenses for internet connection, gadgets, etc. Salceda added that the lockdown has led to almost 3 months of no work income wherein 90 percent of the parents within the 2 million students enrolled in private schools would not be able to support their children financially for the second semester. The Department of Education (DepEd) says that when classes resume on August 24, face-to-face learning is still prohibited in certain areas who are experiencing high-risk of the contamination of Covid-19.

Infection rates at a steady rise, half-a-million deaths worldwide, and still, no vaccine available – COVID-19 remains to be a global crisis left unresolved despite many months of dealing with it. In the Philippines, the spread of coronavirus remains to be out of hand. As of July 3, the country’s tally of confirmed cases has surpassed the 40,000 mark as reports of new cases reach a thousand daily. The rapid transmission of the virus and its dangerous threat to public health forced authorities to close borders, impose community quarantine measures, and eventually embrace the “new normal”. Consequently, what was solely a health issue back then easily branched into more crises, exemplifying the socalled ripple effect that still resonates at present. The situation in the middle of this pandemic operates in a similar manner to that of a ripple. Presently, various issues are faced by different sectors in the society, which caused by the restrictions on regular activities and daily processes – all for the purpose of preventing potential transmission of the virus. Immediately, these affected industries will impact other sectors related to it until the entirety of the population suffers, thus, the ripple effect. The direct impact of the pandemic is already strong but the secondary outcomes are much broader, and consequently, more difficult to deal with. One of the first to experience the repercussions of the pandemic ripple is the transportation sector. In Metro Manila and other areas, public transportation has been suspended since the March 15 lockdown as a public safety measure. Among those severely affected are jeepney, bus, and tricycle drivers, whose daily wages provide most of their expenses. Instead of operating on the streets, now that they are temporarily banned from doing so, they could be seen on the roads begging for alms, and even scavenging from garbage, just to make ends meet. With public transportation unavailable, going to work will be a dilemma for both laborers and businesses. Only big companies are capable of providing free shuttle services for their employees. Other laborers are compelled to endure hours of walking over long distances just to receive salary, and many are left unable to go to work at all. While big corporations and companies are able to secure employee welfare, MSMEs or micro, small, medium enterprises (which comprise 99.6% of the business enterprises in the country) struggle to keep their businesses open. According to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), more than half of MSMEs in the country have fully stopped operations under the lockdown.

The pandemic ripple also took great toll on the tourism sector. The country relies on tourism as a major driver of jobs and the economy. Tourism Secretary Bernadette RomuloPuyat has announced that famous destinations like Boracay and Baguio are already eyeing tourist reopening to start recovering from months of huge loss. Although certainly, international visitors are unlikely to visit the country at least for the rest of the year as the local pandemic situation continues to aggravate. Even local visitors pose high threat to these destinations and the surrounding communities, especially in provinces that have low to none prevalence of COVID-19 infection. With various restrictions in travel, the tourism sector may take one of the longest to return to normality. While other sectors remain at a standstill, school opening is bound to continue as the Department of Education (DepEd) is shifting to a “blended” mode of home-based learning through fusing various media for learning such as online class, printed modules, TV and even radio. Last June 1, DepEd began its monthlong enrolment for the upcoming school year. Multiple stories circulating in social media show teachers climbing mountains only to get mobile data signal in order to enroll their own students. Meanwhile, in one Facebook post, a 13-year old child is captured answering an enrolment form for the upcoming school year in a computer shop at 8:30 in the evening. Behind the picture of resilience and honor is a reality ignored by the Education department –this new form of learning does not offer inclusive education. While homebased learning through online classes may prove to be applicable for private institutions, it presents itself differently to many Filipino families whose troubles are already heavy to carry in this crisis. Without a concrete action plan for the so-called blended mode of learning, the opening of classes will only be an added burden to the marginalized.

have a few enrollees, are compelled to close down. It is too soon for academic institutions to shift to a learning mode they are not designed and prepared for. Pushing through with home-based education, alongside big loopholes, will not provide the same quality as classroom education, and shall only leave learning compromised. After all, education is a human right, and it is wrong that many are deprived access to it.

This ripples to many outcomes. For some students, skipping the school year is a better choice rather than engaging in distance learning, which many of them could barely afford. On the other hand, many small academic institutions, those that lack the resources to hold online classes and those that

It would have been a lot more bearable if there were only a single ripple. However, reality is – this pandemic ripple has not stopped since the virus set in, and its repercussions have worsened, and shall continue to, if the Philippines, together with the global community, fails to recover from this crisis in due time.

Of the four million students who are under the program of K-12, over two million students are considering to transfer or to drop out private institutions for the incoming school year because of the economic impact of the ongoing crisis, the Coordinating Council for Private Educational Associations of the Philippines explained. All schools and community learning centers who are under the supervision of the regional and division offices are permitted to agree on specific learning modalities that would still be appropriate in the context of the Department of Education (Deped).

As a proper response, a concrete mass testing program must be considered urgent. Mitigating the pandemic’s adverse effects will lighten its impact on different sectors and fields. Without widespread COVID-19 testing and contact tracing, the imposition of lockdown, community quarantine and all other safety measures against the virus at the expense of the country’s economy, will all be futile. The COVID-19 has already claimed the lives of many, including doctors and health care professionals in the frontline. It is crucial for the national and local governments to come up with a unified plan and act with critical urgency to combat the virus as quickly as possible.

journalism as a whole. Those that directly express their disappointment and disagreement with the current president and his governance become the main targets of the administration.

For more than seven decades, ABS-CBN Corporation has been in the service of the Filipino through entertainment and honest journalism. The network has provided an outlet that is free from bias and sugarcoating. However, the truth always threatens the mighty. In 1972, former President Ferdinand Marcos has ordered the network’s shutdown after the declaration of Martial Law. Though they were able to silence the media, Marcos’ dictatorship still fell in 1986. The current administration has also ordered the shutdown of the same network. On May 5, 2020, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) issued a cease and desist order to ABSCBN. On the start of the year, it is known that the network has been facing legal issues as presented by Solicitor General

Jose Calida. Although the network has been trying to prove their innocence, the franchise of ABS-CBN was not renewed and they were ordered to stop their operations on May 5, following the expiration of their franchise. On the start of the year, a quo warranto case was filed against the network by Solicitor General Jose Calida with numerous accusations against the corporation. ABS-CBN was able to provide explanations against the allegations with proofs supporting that they did not violate the law. Despite the attempts made for franchise renewal ahead of its March 2020 cessation, NTC, on May 5, halted the network’s operations for expiry of congressional franchise. It is clear that there is a frequent attempt to silence the network and

Last 2018, Duterte has aired his grudge against the network and has accused them of unfair reporting, tax evasion, and swindling for allegedly not broadcasting his political ads in 2016. Though the network has already tried to clear things out with the president, it is still obvious that Duterte is indifferent. He even mentioned that he will see to it that the network will be out of business by 2020. This is a clear manifestation of Press freedom being threatened by the president himself. The service of news outlets are badly needed now for the dissemination of timely and correct reports as Covid-19 glides through the world. The shutdown of the network has added up to the burdens that the Filipinos are facing. The closure of one of the most influential and trusted networks will affect the pace of how information reaches the general public and what information is made available for them to access. Apart from the network, journalists have also felt unsafe under

the current administration. It was reported that at least 154 incidents of attacks and threats against Philippine media have been recorded and at least 15 journalists have been killed under the Duterte administration. One known critic of the president is Maria Ressa, a cofounder of an online news publication known for exposing the filth behind the current administration. In 2019, she was arrested for allegedly violating laws on barring foreign media ownership. From the attacks made against journalists and news outlets, there is a clear pattern of silencing the media through the power and authority that they have acquired. If the government has no issue against press freedom, then they have to provide explanations for the attacks made against journalists under his presidency. The actions and responses of the government have continued to threaten the free press. The mighty always drags those who speak the truth that haunts them. However, this does not stop the truth from resurfacing nor does it stop their impending doom to come. The dictatorship of Marcos ended even if he closed the same network that was against him. Will history repeat itself now?

With the signing of RA 11313 on October 18, 2019, also known as the Safe Spaces Act or Bawal Bastos Law, everyone should be granted the assurance of safety against sexual harassment in public and even in online spaces as it prescribes. The thought of penalizing offenses may seem uptight and serious to probable offenders, so, what if sexual remarks came off as humorous? Emphasis on this law revolves around its effectiveness in several environments, not only in the workplace, as mentioned in the previous law, “Sexual Harassment Act of 1995”. According to it, all offenders, regardless of superiority or authority are subject to legal measures if proven guilty of sexual harassment. This includes academic institutions, virtual platforms, and others. Aside from women, it also aims to protect members of the LGBTQ+ community. Respective of that, even the President is not exempted when it comes to cracking provocative statements relating to rape, and what can be discouraging to this law is that his exercise of Chief Executive authority makes him resistant to penal measures until the end of his term on June 30, 2022. Elaborating in this context, if it seems offensive, then it surely is. Especially if it were brought up in a highly politically-sensitive instance, such as that of when he claimed that

with the military’s power in holding authority over the Marawi siege, he will take responsibility of their actions to the extent of that even if they do something as horrifying as raping three women. Due to this, Samira Gutoc-Tomawis, a member of the Bangsamoro Transition Commission, showed her protest by her resignation. She later joined the senatorial elections as part of the opposition. Another one of Duterte’s worst comments was when he mentioned that as the mayor, he should have been the first to rape Australian missionary Jacqueline Hamill, who died in a rapeslay case in the 1989 Davao hostage crisis. His exact words were: “Nagalit ako kasi nirape, oo isa rin 'yun. Pero napakaganda, dapat ang mayor muna ang mauna. Sayang.” With the assertion that he should have been first, it implies the initiative of a nation’s leader to go against its established law. Now that these cases have been presented amongst many other ones that are as appalling, it is reasonable to admit that aside from the fact that these statements are never fitting for someone of high authority as the President, his high position also creates a huge influence. Humor is subjective, but if it tends to disrespect, it should not be tolerated. His unpleasant example will never not be noticed by the people, because most of his actions will be omnipotent within the sovereignty of his authority. “The words and gestures can incite more abuse or actual violence against women and LGBTIQ persons,”. said Senator Risa Hontiveros, principal sponsor and author of the law.

In a study conducted by Viki et al. (2015), evidence shows that there is a high level of self-reported tendencies on rape as related to sexist humor. There is also a high rate of victim-blaming in these “sexist jokeacquaintance rape condition” instances. In addition, another study states that sexist humor has a propensity to cause women to become more self-conscious about their body figure. (Ford et al. 2007). Disappointingly, some of them also still believe that some victims are to be blamed in some rape cases. Rather than being “anti-men”, Hontiveros affirms that this new law intends to educate people to raise awareness on the consequential impacts of rape on its victims. This also brings light to the fact that rape may not happen only to women, but also to men and the members of the LGBTQ+ community. With this observation, it is clear that an issue like this is undeniably serious as it has the possibility of affecting anyone with no exemption, and therefore should be given due importance. As she states, “Even the President should know and every lawyer would, every citizen who believes in human rights, would know that we exercise our freedoms, our liberties while respecting also the rights of others.” Provided with these notions, we are made aware that humoring sexual comments must be given enough attention so that this improper and disrespectful action discontinues. Asserting superiority does not come through unsolicited sexual advances. Moreover, poking fun at sensitive topics equates to ignorance on its adverse effects. Everyone should feel safe, and this will only be made possible if everyone also makes an effort to create an environment of safety for others.

Are you updated in the weekly releases of your Church’s website, just like how you are updated with your favorite series? Here’s how to catch up and to not lose track towards God. You can find many official pages on Facebook livestreaming the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. But we know that most of the time, due to the anxiety and fear imbibed by the pandemic, one finds himself/herself dispirited to actively participate in one. Here are some reasons why you should sit down and give your full attention to Christ. Have you experienced a day when you have woken up with nothing to do and felt so unproductive? Maybe you experience that numerous times. Those days were normal and were impossible to avoid, but at times of feeling nothing and being empty, one clear answer is to call upon Him for guidance and

enlightenment. Attending the Holy Mass is not just something you HAVE to do. It is something you NEED especially at times like this. COVID-19 instilled not only fear within us, but it also tested our spiritual integrity. Some even questioned their faith because of anxiety and uncertainty. But these virtual celebrations of the Eucharist is a fool-proof way of strengthening our covenant with God. We should take this opportunity to forget about everything that’s holding us back and continue to walk forward and toward spirituality. There is a guarantee that the feeling and assurance we would get from attending mass will keep us going every day as long as we keep God in our hearts. If you could watch a full K-Drama series in a day, why not watch an hour-long Eucharistic celebration in a week? Why not prioritize attending the

I can barely remember what I did during the first few months of quarantine. These past weeks, however, made me realize that I can focus on enhancing my drawing skills to make the most out of my time at home. The whole quarantine period and the pandemic can be stressful, and art can help us cope with the anxiety brought about by Covid-19. Studies show that art can be a therapeutic activity because it allows people to feel and express themselves.

On the 16th of March, 2020, all activities and public gatherings were ordered to come to a halt while local government units impose curfews within their region as the entire country was declared to be in a state of calamity. This reaction was prompted by the spreading of a lifethreatening illness, which has instilled fear and worries within the community, in an effort to evade further exposure and expansion of the number of people who have fallen victim to this disease. However, despite the passing of a lengthened amount of time, we remain within the defensive side of our battle against this pandemic for we have yet to discover a cure for those who have been contaminated or a vaccine for the ones who have yet to be infected. Consequently, this wait for a way to prevent this fatal virus has left people agitated and impatient as they are forced to sit still and find a way to continue their daily tasks and fulfill their needs, despite the lack of resources and the enforced limitation from stepping outside their homes unless absolutely necessary in order to avoid the virus. As such is the case of the young students of society whose education has experienced untimely interruptions. As the learning season of 2020 approaches, educators are determined to take initiative and develop a plan in an attempt to continuously aid their students in their learning process regardless of the seemingly hopeless circumstances. In the end, the arrangement which was decided upon was the same system utilized in the last weeks of the previous school year;

education with the use of online classes. The implementation of online teaching for our school would imply the interactions between the leaners and the teachers would occur primarily or entirely through the use of the internet. It is defined by the usage of technology to deliver instruction to students who are separated from the instructor. However, despite how much this arrangement seems to promise, it is worth questioning whether or not this arrangement is the hope we yearned for in times of crisis or nothing more but a vain attempt at maintaining a sense of normalcy in the times of despair. Although there is no doubt within the multitude of potential, advantages, and services online schooling insinuates, it is no doubt a challenge for us to maximize this medium to its fullest extent with the granted resources. For instance, one could argue against this with the fact that it will not be granted the extent of allowing children to socialize with one another due to the interactions occurring only within the internet. Furthermore, according to the latest Speedtest Global Index, our country's average mobile internet stands at 15.06 Megabits per second, far from the average of 26.12 Mbps; this puts a 103rd among the 139 surveyed countries. In addition to this, our fixedline internet established rank of 101st among the 179 countries examined with a speed of 19.51 Mbps which was much slower than the global average of 57.91 Mbps. With these in mind, it is safe to assume the inevitability of both student and teacher struggling with the faulty

internet connections inducing stutters within the learning process which is to be conducted within online platforms and pose a threat to struggling students and cause them to fall back in their marks. In addition to this, facilitators must be trained in online deliveries and methodologies in order to successfully present the information to the learner, as there remain lessons and concepts which lack resources and further explanations when sought out within the World Wide Web. With all these in mind, it is natural to discern the reality of this proposed system to be sequentially flawed, but considering this method to be hopeless could not be further from the truth. The ability to engage in learning situations in the comfort and refuge of their own home set to their personally favored atmosphere proves to be an influential asset only granted by participating in online schooling as they are able to absorb knowledge easier without the restraints of an uncomfortable workspace and within the safety of their own home is, a trait we require primarily in today's circumstances where isolation is nearly key to survival. Moreover, the internet is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to those with the ability to access it, granting the learners an ability to work within their own pace, timing, and intervals. This also aids students in developing skills in time management and efficiency, allowing them the luxury of freedom in determining their fancied method of juggling the time they require in order to fulfill their responsibilities. With this, the youth is no longer confined

to a singular, inflexible schedule as they learn how to craft efficient plans to fulfill their duties within the allotted time for the day, a skill which will prove to be beneficial in the future where - alike the current circumstance - their time lies in their hands. Finally, above all, the implementation of online classes will serve as the light amid the darkness and crisis of our situation. Our own declaration and evidence of how we maximize the minimal resources we have obtained over the years as a way of combatting the darkness of the crisis encompassing the world, with the hope of a brighter future resting in our hearts. Online schooling is the only way we have of using the excess amount of time granted to us by the quarantine in order to achieve our responsibilities as students, despite the enveloping despair. All things considered, online schooling is a flawed system and our resources may not be able to experience the full extent of this arrangement. However, this does far from implying that we should give up on the nearing learning season. Online schooling provides an experience foreign and new to us as it simultaneously offers services and assets which aid us learners and the educators who are not willing to give up on us in utilizing this small, seemingly flawed hope to its fullest potential regardless of the limitations and restrictions holding us back. Yes, it is far from perfect, but if it is all we have, it is one we should not let go of.

“GO WITH THE FLOW,” a familiar catchphrase most of us are living by these days. Various rules and protocols have been imposed for the past few months of Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ). Since we’re stuck at home, we let things happen, then move along with everyone. It took much time for us to adapt to this new lifestyle, and it is not just about going with the flow, it’s also about navigating our way through this pandemic and adapting to the constant change that it brings.

It’s been months since we were quarantined, but as time passed by, we are slowly being bothered by this new normal. Youth and adults are both experiencing the same sentiments, and as a way of coping up, we find ourselves obsessed with online shops as E-commerce entrepreneurship grow amidst the Coronavirus Disease 2019.

Efforts to contain the virus have resulted in loss of jobs and shut down of large- and/or small-scale businesses. With the posed threats in job securities, online selling is now thriving. As a way of helping these sellers, the best thing we could do is to give them our support. Also, as everything is virtually offered to us, we must be vigilant and careful in choosing the product to get our money's worth. Online selling is what our world needs right now. So, let us show support to our friends who are into it. Like their page. I'll do the same if you decided to own one, too. Due to strict safety measures brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, classes will be not be held in-person or face-toface among learners and teachers for the entire year. With this, Holy Spirit Academy of Malolos launched AIMS: Alternative Instruction Management System, the school’s own academic program designed to deliver its quality Catholic education online."

I came looking for silver, and yet I found gold. I intended to travel far, but circumstances led me further. I, like my twin, am nothing but a faint echo of a long accomplished task. Yet an echo reverberates and will continue to propagate as long as there is a medium. And now, after a very long period of silence, I have found my voice again. This is Voyager 2, signing in once more to continue my mission. We, the Voyager probe twins, were originally part of the Mariner probe family. Our original names were Mariner 11, my younger sister, and Mariner 12, me. But our creators decided that we were far more advanced to inherit the Mariner namesake. Thus, we were given a new designation: Voyager. I was assigned as the flagship probe. Our task, named after us, was codenamed the “Voyager program”. Our primary goal was to explore the gas giants Jupiter and Saturn in the domain of the gas giants, way beyond the Asteroid Belt.

While the COVID-19 pandemic imposes its effects on all regardless of peer group, it is conclusive that its impact will greatly be felt by today’s still developing Generation Z in their yet formative years. Each to their own, generations has been presented with events and phenomena that establish their distinctions with those who precede and likewise are to become after them. What is to Baby Boomers being known as experimental and free-spirited--having been raised in a post-war environment accompanied by the sudden spike of birth rates--is that to Millennials as the “Great Recession” who came of age during a period of general decline in national economies globally. These among others that serve as defining moments to Generation Z’s predecessors is what is to become of the COVID-19 pandemic-the circumstance that is to shape and establish the general worldview of the now growing generation. The effects of the pandemic may hit two divisions of Generation Z’s members differently--the young adults in their 20s in relation to their workplace and the teens in their school environment. With regards to the first matter, according to “The ASEAN Post”, the Philippines already has a fastgrowing “gig-economy” reported early October of 2019. This refers to the hiring of independent and short-term workers by businesses, enabled by technology for one to take on extra or freelance work from just about anywhere in the world. With the nation’s economic stability taking a decline and eventually leading to prolonged unemployment; taking part into an almost if not already non-existent and by the least unstable job market is a

situation that will urge those in the older age bracket to graduate instead into the said “gig” workplace, that of which while unrestrained and flexible is arguably on the downside lax and unsecure as a means to financially support an individual as one is always moving from contract to contract while also lacking in health and retirement plans. For teens still at the early end of Generation Z’s age bracket, the effects on them tend to lean more on the social side, now with the lack of face-to-face and physical interactions highlighted further by the implementation of the collectivity of what is termed as “Blended Learning”. This serves as a substitute for the usual school setting. The nonfulfillment of the traditional means of teaching is remedied by such educating medium among which online classes are the most likely option, while other home-based learning methods through television, radio and printed modules are also provided for the less capable of purchasing the needed gadgets for online learning. For Generation Z, from either end of its range of scope—both from its working and still-learning individuals— the presence of technology serves as a definitive mark that pushes progress into motion amidst the seemingly halt-causing pandemic experienced across the globe. With Gen Z known for being the first of those to be born as “digital natives”, in the face of a further establishing turmoil of the COVID-19 occurrence brings about the resiliency of Zoomers born in the age of endless technological advancements; that striving for growth is still always an option in the midst of the crises being faced by our present. - Abigail San DIego

I was launched first on August 20, 1977. It was kind of awkward that I, Voyager 2, would be launched first than my sister, Voyager 1. But we don’t have the time to spare for ordering our launches (not lunches!) since we were trying to take advantage of the syzygy of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. For those of you who don’t know what a syzygy is, it is the alignment of heavenly bodies in a straight line. This is helpful for us probes since we can use the gravitational pull of these planets to speed us up and use less fuel in a maneuver called a “gravitational slingshot”. My sister meanwhile followed me 2 weeks later on September 5. She took the faster route than me though.

She also blew past Jupiter and Saturn like I did, but left the chore of exploring the last 2 planets to me. What a lazy sister I had! By August 25, 2012, my sister became the first man-made object to enter interstellar space. She sped along with a speed of 17 km per second. On November 5, 2018, I entered the ISM (Interstellar Medium), a domain beyond the influence of the Solar System. Who would’ve thought that a simple mission would take us this far out into space? Meanwhile back on Earth, our superiors decided to continue the Voyager mission despite its completion from way back when. The mission was renamed the “VIM” or the Voyager Interstellar Mission. We continued sending data for 42 years. To save power, I slowly shut down my suite of scientific instruments. Solar panels cannot aid me anymore since I am light years away from the Sun. I am headed towards the constellations of Sagittarius and Pavo while my sister was heading towards the constellation of Ophiuchus. I haven’t received news from my sister since then. I do hope she’s okay. On a starry night of January 25, 2020, I was about to do a spin maneuver that can help me save up some juice. However, a malfunction stopped me from doing it. This caused me to waste too much energy and knocked me offline as a consequence. I became silent for some time. My team back on Earth scrambled and tried their hardest to wake me up again. I could feel them trying to troubleshoot and revive my systems, but for some time nothing worked. One night, I felt the jolt of life waking me up. My team managed to finally wake me on February 5. Thanks to them, I can finally continue this “grand tour” for the sake of exploration. Thank the stars for giving me another shot at this.

Like I’ve said earlier, our primary objective was to only explore Jupiter and Saturn, but thanks to the gravitational slingshots I pulled off, I managed to forge onwards Uranus and Neptune. Of course, as any decent probe would do, I took pictures and sent data regarding these humongous planets.

Time to continue my mission then! You can expect to hear from up until 2032. For now, I’ll cruise along this dark yet mesmerizing expanse of Interstellar Space. And yeah, I gotta end this transmission as well to avoid power shortages. Goodbye then, until I transmit again!

At this point, my sister overtook me already.

Eggs are for breakfast. Chickens are for dinner. Which came first: the chicken or the egg? “There are not many philosophical questions to ask” (a notion so surprising considering how philosophers are always in question trying to figure out “who we are” or “why we are here”). We have already asked some of the important ones. History presents us with many different answers. It is therefore in conclusion that it is easier to answer philosophical questions than to formulate one. Despite this, we are presented an age-old question brought about by Aristotle’s claim of eggs and chickens both having always existed infinitely back in time past. Now Plutarch, a Greek writer, enters the picture and is curious as to what came first providing for us the gift of a metaphysical question given light by the Science of our present. Taken the question as it is, eggs have existed way before chickens. Having known for a fact that dinosaurs had lived first and they are hatched from eggs. It is, therefore, a matter of changing the question into “Which came first the chicken or the

or the egg. Put simply, two birds very similar to a chicken produced an egg with minor mutations and from this point, the egg came first. chicken egg?” and we get the proper question for the answer we wish to get about what started the cyclic nature of the existence of both but also raising arguments about how a chicken can first exist if it comes from an egg and if the egg came first, where was the hen that laid it? The Chicken Came First To back up the claim of chickens having come first, research suggests that the protein essential in the formation of eggs (specifically its shell) can only be found in chicken ovaries, called OV-17. Supported by this discovery, it means that you cannot have a chicken egg without a chicken. But how would we define a chicken egg? Is it what it is because a chicken laid it or is it because it contains a chick regardless of what animal lays it? Does it have “chicken” in its name because of what

laid it or because of what it contains? The Egg Came First Throughout evolutionary history, there existed two almost chicken-like birds that we would be calling a “ProtoChicken”. Given an exact name, chickens are studied to be the same species as the “red jungle fowl” of Southeast Asia that is thought to be hybridized with a “grey jungle fowl” before domestication; the two being the parents of our first-ever chicken. These proto-chickens were to have mated producing an egg to which they would each on their part pass on not perfect g e n e t i c information in the form of DNA. These slight inaccuracies would be causing minor changes in the new organism. These mutations are to occur in the zygote

One could argue though that the egg laid is not a “chicken-egg” but rather a proto-egg of the protochicken containing a chicken. We are presented with two scenarios: First would be that a proto-chicken laid a proto-egg, hatched to be the first chicken that would lay the first chicken egg (chicken first). Second would be that a proto-chicken laid a chicken egg that hatched to be the first chicken (egg first). With all this, we have arrived at our question still not given any answer. But exactly at what point in history can we say that the egg laid is already a chicken egg? If you choose to consider the egg from which the chicken was hatched from either scenario a “chicken-egg” then the egg came first. Otherwise, while chickens existed roaming the earth; a chicken egg still had not hatched waiting for the “exact” chicken to lay it. Thank you, Aristotle… or Plutarch. Whoever.

Booyah! It’s me, your resident wee-bro writer, SeZaRu, back with another issue of “The Science of Games”. Today we are going to talk about a famous game with Japanese origins: Splatoon! Splatoon 2 is a 3rd Person Shooter (TPS) game developed by Nintendo as a predecessor and sequel for a game of the same title and genre. It was released on the 21st of July, 2017 and was well received by the fans and people foreign to the fandom alike. It has sold over 9 million copies worldwide and has been recognized as one of the best selling games for the Nintendo Switch. The core mechanics of Splatoon 2 takes on the form of “Turf Wars”, the game’s crown jewel. In this game, anthropomorphic creatures called Inklings and Octolings duke it out in various arenas with quirky names such as “Camp Triggerfish” and “Port Mackerel”. The creatures in this game can assume two forms: a squid form (for Inklings), an octopus form (for Octolings), and a humanoid “kid” form (both species can assume this form). The primary objective of this game is to cover and defend turf (slang for territory) by using colored ink loaded inside a menagerie of Shooters (gunlike apparatus), Brushes (paintbrushes), Sloshers (buckets), Dualies (similar to Shooters but dual-wielded), and the like. You can use this colored ammunition for offensive purposes like marking your team’s turf, stealing enemy turf by spraying over their ink, splatting enemies trying to hinder your team’s

advance, or for defensive purposes like hiding and escaping by switching to a squid/octopus form and swimming away or defending a trapped teammate by peppering his general vicinity with “friendly ink”. Players must effort not to come in contact with the ink sprayed by their opponents as doing so can cause disastrous consequences. Players also have to be strategic with their equipment and form-switching skills to cover, gain, and defend turf as quickly and efficiently as possible. There are also different game modes to avoid monotony, but the objective remains the same nonetheless. As we can see from the description of Splatoon 2, it emphasizes the value of taking territory under your control and defending it from those who wish to filch it. But what is the real definition of territory? We can view territorial phenomena in 4 different aspects: geographical, political, ethological, and human ethological. The geographical aspect of territory speaks about the limits of an area dictated by natural formations, such as large oceans and seas which separates the continents, or by mountain ranges and valleys that divide plains into numerous sectors. The political aspect speaks about an area or domain which is under the jurisdiction of a ruler or state. This is the common type of territoriality we see nowadays. Nations set borders and terrestrial, maritime, and aerial domains which are governed by both international and local laws. The ethological aspect is quite similar to the political aspect,

Breathe in, breathe out. Now, try that again with the blue-and-white mask, one of the most sought-after objects since the beginning of this year, to cover your mouth and nose.

Sotto has travelled far from his hometown of Manila, to Atlanta, United States training with The Skill Factory for the past year, working towards his NBA dream. Having won a UAAP Junior’s Basketball Championship and Finals MVP in 2018, Sotto had powered through the Philippine junior’s basketball circuit and had fans expecting a high-caliber performance in his college years. except that animals decide the extent of their territory themselves based on food sources, climate, and living conditions. They use urine, excrements, or even various objects to mark their zones. When it comes to human ethology, things become a little complicated. We, being the complex creatures that we are, take this concept of territoriality on a whole nother scale. According to Robert D. Sack and his journal article “Human Territoriality: A Theory”, human territoriality is neither a biological drive nor an instinct, but as a strategy to establish access to various things or people. It is an attempt to affect, influence, or control actions or interactions like relationships by asserting and attempting control over a geographic area. It is a desire to assert dominance to gain direct control over the way things work. One good example of this statement can be found within your home. Inside your bedroom, you can do whatever you want inside it like tape posters on the wall and display stuff somewhere. But once you step outside that very room, you cannot just freely do the things I stated earlier as you wish. Taping K-pop posters on the living room walls or displaying anime figures on random shelves can evoke

FACT: Masks’ effectivity on repelling microparticles relies on how properly it was worn. Sadly, some pieces of erroneous information were publicized making people believe to wear masks in an improper manner. One side of a common surgical mask is white-colored while the other is blue. The World Health Organization (WHO) instructs people to wear mask with the whitecolored side facing you while the blue side facing outward. According to the Straits Times, doing the opposite could result to less effectivity of the masks and discomfort. MYTH 2: Wearing a mask can make a person feel sick.

As you slowly let that air out of your body, you’re releasing droplets, invisible from the naked eye, but could totally hold an unseen virus – the COVID-19. What more if you coughed or sneezed? Scientists approximate that 3,000 droplets are being released in a single cough which could go up to 50 miles an hour – fast enough for another person to inhale in an instant.

FACT: This is an absurd one. Many people, most especially anti-mask protesters, believe that by wearing masks, a person would breathe more carbon dioxide and less oxygen. According to Mayo Clinic, there is no evidence that masks cause hypoxia, a condition causing lower levels of oxygen in the body. Carbon dioxide will freely escape from your mask as you breathe out.

Jelia Belluz, a Senior Health Reporter from Vox said, “All you need to do to spread the Coronavirus-19 is to cough or sneeze on someone else, touch a surface where the virus still lives and then put your hand in your mouth or your eyes or your nose.”

MYTH 3: A face mask should only cover the mouth.

What makes this virus even scarier is the fact that a healthy-looking individual may actually have it but have no symptoms at all. Imagine one of your family members coming home, looking and feeling the same as before, unknowingly pass the virus to you or to any member of your household. Then imagine meeting one of your friends, both your masks off, and you accidentally coughed in the middle of the conversation. Already three people, at the very least, had the virus. However, the scientific community has offered safety measures like social distancing and wearing masks in order to decrease the chances of having such situations. Though measures were presented, many still believe these as untrue, or they believe some myths that may even increase their likelihood of contracting the virus than the otherwise. To help you discern which is right and which is false, here are some myths about wearing masks that you may still believe: MYTH 1: A mask should be worn inside out when the wearer is sick.

FACT: Whenever you watch the news you would see some people wearing their masks wherein the only part covered is the mouth while the nose is freely exposed. Wearing the mask this way defeats the purpose it originally serves – to protect you from the virus. We breathe through the nose. The mask protects you from the virus while breathing. Therefore, you cover your nose with you mask as well. MYTH 4: Masks alone could protect people from the Coronavirus. FACT: Masks are effective protectors against COVID-19. However, it is not enough. The Department of Health (DOH) suggests different safety measures to reduce the risk of contracting the virus such as social distancing (at least 1 meter apart from another person), constantly sanitizing or washing hands, staying at home if it is unnecessary to go outside, and observance of coughing and sneezing etiquette. MYTH 5: Cloth masks are less effective than other masks. FACT: According to the University of Maryland Medical System, every type of mask serves a different purpose.

the unholy anger of your mom or pop. Ideas that work inside your domain may not align with the ideas of a different domain. This is where the concept of territoriality is displayed. The way Splatoon 2 portrays territoriality on a human notion is quite relative to Sack’s theory. In this game, you strive to control territory to attain dominance over the things that may or may not happen in that specific area. An example of this includes unrestricted movement and form shifting. Within your inked turf, you can control where you wish to go and switch forms to your heart’s desire. On the other hand, you may not move as freely over enemy turf, and you cannot switch forms either. Thus, this very scenario will drive you to gain more turf for the team and defend it in fear of restriction and losing the freedom to do things your way. With this action, you have just declared territoriality over the opposing team. WOOMY! And there you have it for the Science of Splatoon 2! Always remember to Stay Fresh!

Cloth masks are advisable for the general public while the other types such as N95 masks are advisable to those who are frequently outside of their homes and those who are frequently exposed to COVID-19 patients. Besides, you could help the medical community by just buying cloth masks and reserving masks such as the N95 for them. The only way we could “flatten the curve” is to be knowledgeable on what to do to reduce the chances of getting the virus and educating others who may not know what to do. As Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease specialist, said “The biggest thing with COVID now that shapes all of this guidance on masks is that we can’t tell who’s infected. You can’t look in a crowd and say, oh, that person should wear mask. There’s a lot of asymptomatic infection, so everybody has to wear a mask.” Wearing a mask is vital to prevent ourselves and others f r o m possibly contracting the virus, but only if we know how to wear it. Now try it again, but properly this time. Breathe in, breathe out.

Lakers’ star Lebron James acknowleded that the NFL is taking into action by doing a much more appreciative job by listening to its Black players, but says that the NFL should directly apologize to Colin Kapernick formally, speaking to Bloomberg Businessweek’s Jason Kelly. For the past weeks, the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell have atoned for their mistakes for not taking into action for supporting their players during the peaceful protests against police brutalities and the mistreatment toward Black people all throughout America Despite their apologies, the NFL still has yet to apologize to Colin Kaepernick, the player who started the peaceful protests and still haven't had a chance to be back in the NFL. Goodell posted a video statement on June 5 responding to players who claim the league should acknowledge Black Lives Matter and also “condemn racism and the systematic oppression of Black People.” Voices are railing against the NFL and calling out the league to apologize to Kaepernick and Lebron James is one of the latest to speak out about it. "As far as the NFL, I'm not in those locker rooms. I'm not with those guys. But I do understand that an apology, I have not heard a true, official apology to Colin Kaepernick on what he was going through and what he was trying to tell the NFL and tell the world about why he was kneeling," “So, I just see that to still be wrong," James said in the Bloomberg interview. "And now they are listening some, but I still think we have not heard that official apology to a man who, basically, sacrificed everything to better this world."

The most memorable part of the match was after the game, emotion ran across the field as Liverpool takes the title after a 30-year drought held the city down, as now they are England’s champions.

The Philippine Sports Commission stressed on April 29 that the country will not hold nor host any sport activity until a vaccine becomes available. “No vaccine, no sporting events, but for individual physical fitness it’s alright”, spoke PSC Chairman William Ramirez in a text message to CNN Philippines. Concluding a virtual meeting, the agency’s sport officials implicated the safety measures in conformity with Inter-agency Task Force (IATF) on constraining activities even concluding the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ). ”We heed the call of the national government to cut expenses as we reroute majority of our resources to fighting the pandemic, but we also stand by our

commitment to keep supporting members of the national team,” Chairman Ramirez spoke. Though PSC has no control over private and independent leagues like the UAAP and PBA, Ramirez added that the organizations need to comply with government guidelines, "UAAP has its own charter and board, but they have to follow the latest government guidelines. The same with the PBA." PSC is aided financially by mandated contributions from The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation but due to the present lockdown, PAGCOR’s income has been distressed and may burn its settlements to PSC hereafter.

“We continue to study projections and proposals and the board is ready to take necessary actions should they be needed,” said Ramirez. Until such vaccine is introduced, PH sports events held under the PSC and other organizations must comply with the government’s guidelines to ensure safety and security from this pandemic.
