The story of the School community over the years is told through the windows, plaques and memorials, which have been donated by, or in memory of, past pupils and staff. The spiritual development of our pupils is supported through weekly Chapel services with the School Chaplain, as well as in lessons.

The School is underpinned by Christian values and the School Chapel, founded in 1883, is situated centrally on the campus and is a clear and visible reminder of the School’s Christian character.

Children join one of the four Houses, Shrewsbury, Kingsmead, Bidston and Beresford, and these offer pupils camaraderie and opportunities to make friendships

across all years with House competitions spanning the breadth of School life. Life long friendships are also made on the sports field, in clubs and in the Music School, as well as in the classroom and on school trips, with each pupil’s individual personality and character being given plenty of opportunity to shine through.

Learning Beyond the Classroom The annual residential outdoor pursuit trips allow whole year groups and the School community to come together to learn new skills from rock climbing and abseiling, to raft building and map reading. Lots of fun and laughter is shared with friends and teachers, and team work and leadership skills are developed. Trips and visits, both at home and abroad, are also highlights in the year, creating memories that last a lifetime. Whether it be ski trips to Europe in Prep, meeting world famous astronauts, a visit to NASA in Houston, or a trekking expedition in Nepal, our pupils are inspired, developing skills and knowledge, and become confident and informed world citizens. In Seniors, all pupils work towards the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Learning Beyond the Classroom The annual residential outdoor pursuit trips allow whole year groups and the School community to come together to learn new skills from rock climbing and abseiling, to raft building and map reading. Lots of fun and laughter is shared with friends and teachers, and team work and leadership skills are developed. Trips and visits, both at home and abroad, are also highlights in the year, creating memories that last a lifetime. Whether it be ski trips to Europe in Prep, meeting world famous astronauts, a visit to NASA in Houston, or a trekking expedition in Nepal, our pupils are inspired, developing skills and knowledge, and become confident and informed world citizens. In Seniors, all pupils work towards the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Sport Builds Character and Resilience

Sport is a large part of School life, with pupils taking part in a wide and varied Games and PE curriculum and numerous sports clubs both during and after school. Rugby, lacrosse, cricket, netball, tennis, hockey and golf are some of the sports played at the School and pupils’ character and moral principles are formed through fair play and teamwork. Positive selfesteem and physical and mental well-being contribute to overall success both inside and outside of the classroom, and are all developed through the sports experiences on offer. Inclusivity extends to the sports field with pupils offered opportunities to represent the School across the breadth of sports. Weekly fixtures see parents and the School community coming together to support on the touchline. Pupils and alumni have enjoyed local, national and international success, mirrored by members of the sports staff, who share their professional and amateur experiences on the sports field with pupils. Exceptional sports performances are recognised through School Colours at our annual Sports Awards Evening.

Prep Orchestra, Prep Choir and Little School Choir offer our youngest pupils the opportunities to perform. As they progress, Seniors offers an array of musical ensembles that pupils can join, including Senior Orchestra, Concert Band, Big Band, and our award-winning Brass Ensemble.

Performing, listening, composing and discussion take place in class music lessons, with pupils being encouraged to further their enjoyment and performance skills by taking part in cocurricular musical activities, school productions and concerts.

Music specialists, within both Prep and Seniors, offer an outstanding and enriching musical education for pupils at the School and the department has strong links with the Liverpool Philharmonic and Liverpool Hope University. Pupils regularly represent the School at regional and national level, with some of our most talented pupils gaining places in the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, National Children’s Orchestra, National Youth Choir, and National Youth Wind Orchestra.

Learning a musical instrument is encouraged from an early age in the Music School and individual weekly tuition in a wide range of instruments, as well as singing, is available.

Our Chapel Choir is perhaps unique amongst independent day schools with choristers performing what is essentially a cathedral repertoire, offering an enriching and uplifting experience in which pupils from Prep to Sixth Form work together as musical equals. The Choir sings in the School Chapel, during weekly Chapel services and at Sunday Evensong. Outside School, the Choir sings Evensong at local cathedrals, and will regularly undertake summer ‘cathedral weeks’, where the choristers sing the daily offices in the cathedral or Minster. These trips alternate with foreign music tours which involve both instrumentalists and singers performing at a wide range of venues, with recent destinations including Italy, Spain, and the Czech Republic.

The Wessex Wing, which is home to our older pupils in Prep, has its own designated playground that has been beautifully landscaped to provide zones for both energetic games and quieter, more reflective time. Our Prep pupils benefit enormously from plenty of time outdoors. As well as having extensive inspirational play areas, they have the use of an outdoor classroom as a base for nature activities, outdoor practical activities and wildlife investigations. The pathway to Seniors is seamless with pupils taking part in a range of lessons, activities and events in Seniors during their time in Prep. The transition to Seniors ensures that there is no loss in quality or momentum of the educational experience as they move on, confident and excited with friends, and familiar with staff and the curriculum.
