A WORD FROM OUR WINE BUYERS We’ve worked harder than ever these last eight months to bring you a collection of wines that we really feel is our best yet. The theme is going back to our roots – unearthing the unusual with the aim of surprising and delighting you and your customers. Gavin has been banging the Albariño drum and we see quality here having taken a big leap. Try the delicious Bodeas Viña Nora from Rias Baixas no.68. Italy features strongly too for both whites and reds and you’ll even find a Pinot Grigio (no.52) that we feel is absolutely delicious and offers a significant step up from the norm. We’ve put the list together with the colder months in mind though and are proud to welcome some new reds that we shipped months ago ready for this list. Don’t miss the deliciously smooth James Bryant Pinot from Monterey, California (no. 92), nor the terrifically tasty Valle Secreto First Edition Syrah from Chile (no. 95). Operating at different ends of the spectrum, these both offer pure, juicy fruit in abundance. As always, the aim has been to push the boundaries and promote wines that really stand out. We hope you enjoy this selection and look forward to hearing what you think soon. T: 020 7352 4083 E: gavin@thevintner.com

I wanted to say a HUGE thanks to you and the team for another fab event. It was cracking as ever, greatly enjoyed by all, with clients very excited to have taken part. Clearly some ‘creative’ adjudicating went on to rob the winning team, but a moral victory all the same. Lots of people are asking if this is now an annual event; I think it has to be. CHAMPAGNE & SPARKLING WINE

Dizy

There is so much more to fizz these days than just Champagne. In fact, it continues to be far more about Prosecco than any other fizz, with many customers preferring not just the cost of Prosecco to Champagne but the flavour too. We still recommend our super tasty Frizzante from La Tordera (no. 1) as a cracking party sparkler.

Oger

Avize Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Vertus

SÉZANNE

The exciting bit for us though is what’s happening at the premium end of the spectrum. Here we are huge supporters of our quality English sparklers, made using the same techniques as Champagne in a climate and soil combo that Champagne was said to have 100 years ago. We champion Nyetimber (no. 8) as being at the very top of this game, made from the classic blend of Champagne grape varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) and spending longer on it’s lees than most Champagnes. It’s very very good!

Tension and concentration in a way only the team at Hugel know how to generate, there is a reason why they are the most famous family in Alsace. Enjoy with smoked salmon. (Nick)

Alsace is most famous for it’s aromatic grape varieties - dry Riesling and Gewurztraminers being the most widely written about and marketed. These wines have slightly weightier fruit and texture than those from neighbouring Germany and they’re mostly dry. We’ve selected a cracking Riesling in no. 30, a dry, elegant and moreish white from one of the oldest and most reputable domaine’s in the region.

31. Arbois Savagnin Grand Elevage, Maison Rijckaert, Jura Bottle price

Head south, and still hugging the Eastern border, you’ll hit the wooded hillside region of Jura. It’s mostly a white wine region and the best that we’ve found are made from the local grape Savagnin. The best of these, as in no. 31, retain wonderfully fresh acidity and are robust enough to carry that little touch of oak. They’re absolutely stunning and a great alternative to the easier (but definitely more expensive) choice of top flight white burgundy.

PRODUCER PROFILE Jean Rijckaert It’s no wonder that Jean Rijckaert’s wines have just that little touch of burgundiness to them as that’s exactly where he started back in 1990. A staunch traditionalist, Jean seeks out the best terroirs and uses traditional equipment and methods to make his wines to express the land on which they’re grown. Unlike so many of his contempories he shies away from stainless steel for fermentation preferring large oak barrels instead - ‘it allows my wine to evolve and develop rather than forcing flavours and development to suit timings and tastes’, he argues. It’s a different approach for us but in tasting his wines and listening to his philosophy we can’t argue that it doesn’t work. Jean is gradually handing the baton over to the charismatic Florent Rouve who’s overseeing wine making in both cellars - Davaye in Macon and Les Planches in Jura. Given that we’ve restricted ourselves to only 100 wines we haven’t opened the floodgates to list their wonderful burgundies and believe this Jura is a fabulous example of this exciting region.

BORDEAUX

Pauillac St-Julien

Our real challenge when putting together a list of 100 wines is to keep the number of Bordeaux wines down and the range representative of the region. It is the most famous wine-producing region in the world and has some very distinct terroirs producing very different flavours. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the left bank regions of the Haut Medoc, Margaux, Pauillac and St. Julien. These wines are rich with blackcurrant fruit and a smack of cedar wood when young and develop all sorts of wonderful aromas including pencil shavings when mature. A cracking example is our Margaux (no. 34) and for something a little fresher look at Château de Cérons Grand Enclos delicious Graves (no. 32).

Tasting notes: A brooding nose showing primary fruit aromas of plums and red berries, still slightly masked by the proportion of oak which gives the wine a touch of rusticity. On the palate there is plenty of power, with fresh, ripe, plummy fruit; dates, red berries and even blackcurrant. The wood is quite present in the mix but in balance with ripe tannins and a velvety finish. (Gavin)

A seriously reliable Château in Margaux, home of perhaps the Left Bank’s most feminine and soft style of claret. The 2012 vintage is generous and fruit forward. Typically Bordeaux in its complex blackcurrant and cedar character, this wine has a tannic structure fine enough to make this totally approachable now. (Will)

Bordeaux

PRODUCER PROFILE Château Troquart Château Troquart is a small family estate of 5.5 hectares, located close to the village of Saint-Émilion. The winery is situated in a favourable southwesterly direction on limestone and clay soils, with the area of production for the Clos St-Jacques wine being only 2 hectares. The vineyard is owned by Jean-Guy Grégoire, who, after a long career in fashion, decided to make a rather dramatic career U-turn and purchased this vineyard. He has since appointed his son Étienne as the technical director for the winery, whose aim it is to express the nuances of the Saint-Georges Saint-Émilion region whilst shying away, where possible, from using excessively modern winemaking techniques. He is fast making a name for himself as a “young gun” of the region!

Super juicy, dense, plummy blackcurrant fruit wrapped in a blanket of velvet. This is approachable Pomerol at a very accessible price. Primary fruits dominate the palate now but it will live long and develop further. (Gavin)

Citran has always been ‘classic’ in style with austere earthy and woody flavours but in the 2010 this is accompanied with more fleshy fruit. Black and redcurrants are generous refreshing flavours, nicely balanced with the earthy and lightly oaked finish. Already showing very well but will age gracefully. (Gavin)

This wine is really open now. The concentration of fruit in this 2005 shows just how good the vintage was. Heaps of primary fruit; blackcurrant, black cherry and redcurrant all wrapped up in that typical, fresh, Left Bank Cabernet structure. The finish is fresh and long. A truly great 2nd wine in a top vintage. (Gavin)

This is a special wine from the team at GPL. This vintage produced dense, structured wines but this GPL has started to unfurl it’s beauty already. Cassis with blackberries and red berries dominate with characteristic cedar notes, graphite and a hint of mint. The tannins are grippy but integrated and add to the generous texture. This is a beautiful and classic Pauillac with precision and substance. (Nick)

Still one of the most underrated and undervalued of the classic French wine growing regions the Rhone Valley is home to some of France’s most magical wines. It’s split very much between the North and South. Syrah dominates the northern Rhône producing wines with finesse and elegance. Often these wines are fresh with minerality and some marked acidity, making them delicious food wines and often comparable to fine Burgundy. Try our Crozes Hermitage (no. 41) as a classic example.

ITALY There are few countries that are as confusing to navigate than Italy...for wine that is. Home of the largest number of grape varieties in the world, many of which even we have never heard of and with wine laws that operate so differently from region to region. It’s wonderful though and the source of many of the wines that we are most excited to be listing. Starting from the north look for the fresh, crisp, vibrant whites such as the Verdicchio (no. 53) and I Campi’s super tasty, unoaked but creamy Soave Classico (no. 54) and look too at the ever tasty Rosso delle Venezie Red from Veneto – Cabaletta (no. 58). As you go further south the wines gain in structure and weight and you’ll find two true classics from Tuscany in nos. 62, San Giorgio’s Rosso di Montalcino and no. 61, their big bruising but beautiful Brunello de Montalcino (no.67).

PRODUCER PROFILE Marchesi Mazzei The history of the Mazzei family is closely linked not just to the history of winemaking in Tuscany, but to the political and cultural history of the entire region. The first documents that name the Mazzeis – originally from the winemaking area of Carmignano – date back to the early eleventh century. Today, after almost six centuries, the Mazzei family – under the guidance of Lapo, who oversees the property with the help of his sons, Filippo and Francesco, - still devotes itself to winemaking, with a constant commitment, an eye towards innovation and an abiding respect for the land.

Spain

SPAIN Spain is perhaps the country that fascinates and excites us most. Home to great value as well as some unique styles in both white and red and a country brimming with ambitious and progressive young wine growers. The region that really splits the pack is Rioja. Here you can find ultra modern styles that veer away from the warm, spicy oxidative notes of old. We unashamedly back the traditional so champion the use of old American oak to soften the spicy, ripe black and sometimes smoky fruit. Check out the La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva (no. 71 for a very classic example). Outside of Rioja we’re most excited about the whites, which are varied and wonderful in equal measure. For something slightly weightier with a texture bordering on creamy head east to Galicia and try the new Albarino from Bodegas Vina Nora (no. 68)– it really is stunning.

PRODUCER PROFILE Bodegas de la Marquesa Valserrano Pablo de Simon is our oldest friend we profile in this catalogue and it’s only taken us five years to persuade him to choose us to promote his wonderful wines in the UK. The estate is Bodegas de la Marquesa and they bottle their wines under the label ‘Valseranno’. Pablo runs the estate with his brother and sister and lives there with his wife and three children. Here he makes wines that call on the traditional and focus on the tastes and trends of us modern Rioja lovers – there’s ageing in traditional American oak, but not too much; there’s oxidation, but just enough to retain the charm and there’s plenty of spicy, ripe fruit. In fact, this Rioja is just delicious and we’d urge you to try the Crianza (no. 70).

A beautifully pure and gorgeous Grüner that is expressive and complex. Floral and citrussy, this wine is a sommelier’s dream as it is so versatile with food and will often go with hard to pair dishes due to its ability to complement bold flavours. (Tom)

Portugal has impressed us again and winemaker Anselmo is recognised as one of the country’s finest white wine producers. Known for his experimentation and this wine which has had some skin contact is a great example of his skill. The ripe stone fruits balanced with a lively acidity make it seriously moreish and an excellent wine to pair with food. (Lucy)

England is making great strides not only in sparkling wine but in still white too and our new Stopham at no. 75 delivers everything great about dry, delicate English white. This really does no justice to the wonderful wine producing countries these wines hail from but with just 100 wines we cannot give every country the coverage it deserves. The wines here are truly fabulous. They’re slightly off the beaten track which is why we love them and every one deserves a mention. Take no. 72 for example, a deliciously dry white with a hint of orange blossom and spice and a great value example of Austria’s principal white grape variety.

Australia & New Zealand

AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND What excites us about both Australia and New Zealand is their ever increasing focus on delicacy and finesse, relying less and less on their weight of fruit and alcohol. From New Zealand we particularly love the Germanic grape varietals and you can’t get a great deal more delicious than no. 80, the Archangel Pinot Gris, a wine that we’ve followed for the full six years and never tire of. Have confidence in all of these wines. We’ve selected the styles and regions that really have an identity and found classic examples to express this.

In just a handful of vintages, Kevin Judd has established his wines at the upper echelons of Sauvignon Blanc production. (Gavin)

For a relatively uncommon grape variety, this is one of our most appreciated wines on the list. The warmer weather in New Zealand gives this sometimes austere grape a wonderful, fleshy roundness, whilst still retaining its fresh and vibrant character. Room was made on our list for this extraordinary Semillon from the Hunter Valley in Australia. Often enjoyed in its youth, we prefer it with a few years of age, allowing the citrus notes to develop into rounded, silky honeyed aromas. From one of the foremost producers of quality Chardonnay in NZ, this 2012 is singing. PRODUCER PROFILE Neudorf In 1978 the New Zealand fine wine industry was almost non-existent. Pioneers Tim & Judy Finn created the Neudorf winery in Nelson in the late 1970’s. Because there was so little known about basic viticulture in New Zealand they originally planted many varieties to see which ones were best suited to their soils. Merlot came and went, as did Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and the dreaded Muller Thurgau. This winery concentrates on texture, balance and for certain wines, complexity. Finesse is always a priority. The site was adapted from the original stables (circa 1850) and has been described by one writer as “an elegant shed” and houses the wine bar, office and white winery. Since the 80’s their reputation and production of quality chardonnay and pinot noir has continued to grow.

As the photograph suggests this really is right up there on ‘the most beautiful wine growing regions in the world’ scale. It’s also a country that’s taking huge leaps to establish it’s identity blending ripeness and weighty fruit with a degree of elegance and wine making ‘know how’ that we haven’t seen here before.

Elgin

Julien Schaal’s Chardonnay (no. 88) is a lighthouse example of this - ripe and fleshy as we’d expect from many new world Chardonnays but with the restraint that would give the wines from Macon a good run for their money – subtle use of new and used oak to enhance the qualities of the wine rather than dominate it. In fact, this was confused for a top flight Pouilly Fuisse in a recent Masters of Wine tasting we hosted in our tasting room.

This is Burgundy-style Chardonnay: lightly oaked with a mineral depth and great elegance. The South African sunshine adds warmth, ripeness and a creamy richness to the mix making this a great value alternative to more pricey white Burgundies. (Charlotte)

A real jewel in the crown of our South African listings. This is very serious Syrah, almost Côte-Rôtie in style. The black fruit character is added to by aromas of black olive and smoked meat. With a long finish and good balance of freshness this is as fine a Syrah as we’ve found in South Africa. Superb. (Will)

THE AMERICAS This is indeed a vast area to lump in to one section and it comprises some of the truly great terroir and countries of the world. For years California has rightly had a reputation for producing some of the finest wines in the world… since 1976 in fact when Chateau Montelena Chardonnay and Stags Leap Cabernet won the Judgement of Paris blind tasting double against the finest wines France had to offer. Argentina too is no newcomer to the red wine party with Malbec continually breaking records in volume of sales year after year. These wines, as in our Pascual Toso Limited Edition Malbec (no. 93), deliver levels of rich, ripe and soft black fruit that few other countries can match, particularly with this grape variety. Other than Malbec Argentina also produces some fine Cabernets and Merlots, a prime example being no. 97, Bodegas Atamisque’s old vine Cabernet grown at 4000 feet above sea level. That’s the trick in these hot regions though – for real quality, you’ve got to plant high. It’s far more recently that the wines of Chile have begun to receive the recognition they deserve. Having emerged now from their ‘Tesco Merlot’ shadow, Chile is now taking pride in promoting their engine room grape variety, Carmenere. No. 96, Aluvios de Tingui Gran Reserva , is a wonderful expression of just how juicy, fleshy and ripe this wine can be from the warm basin of the Colchagua Valley.

This wine really stood out from a large crowd of other American Chardonnays at a tasting last year. The small Bien Nacido vineyard benefits from a cool microclimate, allowing the Chardonnay to ripen gently and slowly. PRODUCER PROFILE Pascual Toso Bodegas Toso is no newcomer to the Argentinian Malbec party having been making wine their since 1890. The estate was founded by Pascual Toso, himself an immigrant from Piemonte in northern Italy and has become one of the leading lights in the Argentine wine scene. Felipe Stahlschmidt is the wine maker here and is hailed as ‘one of the top winemakers in Argentina’. He cut his teeth at Catena, where he oversaw its Vista Flores winery managing a team of eleven winemakers and producing some of the best-selling wines of the estate including their Catena Zapata. Felipe is helped by Paul Hobbs who was appointed consultant wine maker in 2001. Paul made his reputation in California and together they offer experience and skill well beyond the price tag of their wines winning Bodegas Toso many awards including ‘Best Argentine Producer’.

SWEET WINE This heading can cover a multitude of styles, flavours and qualities but we’ve selected one very classic wine to fly with our selection of 100. From France, botrytised and offering the breadth of flavour to take many different food experiences from the normal to the extraordinary. Botrytis Cinerea is the disease that attacks and rots the skins of the grapes and, given the right conditions, this rot stays dry and shrivels the grapes. It’s hugely labour intensive but the result is intensely sweet must allowing for fully fermented sweet white wines with all sorts of magical flavours – think honey, apricots, oranges. This wine is wonderful at the start of a special meal (with foie gras and pâté) and of course at the end too (we’d say with Tarte Tatin).
