UNIVERSITY PROJECT
For my final major project I decided to challenge the design skills I had already learnt, whilst broadening my knowledge and creating something which would encompass my interests and personality. Having observed the growing trend for living walls being introduced into urban spaces, I realised their must be a customer set within the market that would benefit from a more cost effective system. The innovative, modular and low-tech DivideByNature system offers exciting possibilities for enhancing the workplace for both small and large businesses. Focussed on improving the health and well-being of those who inhabit that space, the system breathes fresh air, absorbs passive sound, and provides a flexible, adaptable and cost effective solution to all businesses.

'The use of plants indoors has shifted over the last few years, with more and more people wanting to add planting, but without giving up too much expensive floor space. James has managed to embrace this new trend and developed a product that would meet our changing market's needs. I therefore believe that DivideByNature once fully developed, has the potential be become a commercial product.'
'I certainly see the value of installing self-sustining organics in the office environment. Obviously it enhances the working space, but also limiting maintenance is an added bonus in a busy studio. We've previously killed Cactus.'

UNIVERSITY PROJECT
The brief was to combat the amount of commercial waste in the form of disused ofďŹ ce furniture destined for landďŹ ll. I used my combined business and design skills to develop a self-sustaining social enterprise makerspace. The Chip- Chop Work-Shop is a fully equipped makerspace located at the heart of deprived communities around the UK. The facility empowers the community while collecting, sorting and repurposing unwanted MDF and chipboard destined for landďŹ ll.
Ed Banks Newcastle City Council, Local Economic Development Officer "The Chip Shop Workshop provides such a valuable opportunity to local youngsters, where they can gain skills to empower them and improve their longer term employment options. Having design mentors would really help their personal development."

UNIVERSITY PROJECT
The brief - To design a product, service or campaign that is specifically intended to help those within rural communities to flourish once again. The Inn Franchise is a concept designed for publicans within rural communities, with the opportunity to make use of now lesser-used facilities by offering extended services to locals such as a shop, post office, pharmacy and meeting rooms. The publican benefits from national economies of scale whilst vastly increasing the footfall through diversifying the offer within their establishment.
Giles Francais, Publican Owner The White Hart Sherington 'It is a shame the youger generations are now moving away from the village and the closure of both the village shop and post office last year has affected the local community very badly. There is certainly a demand for these facilities locally and it would be fantastic to see more people coming through the pubs doors like they used to. I would be very motivated to get on board with the Inn Franchise if it were in opperation.”
Research and insights
• In the past 25 years 180,000 pubs have shut and more than half of the local post offices have relocated. • There are 4.2 million people who work from home contributing £200 million to the economy. • Rural travel links are unreliable and costly. • Rural areas are now more connceted than ever.
“The INN Meeting room is a great place to hold corporate meetings, we have everything we need and the buffet lunch is handy”
“I use INN Post to frank all of my businesses parcels and mail which makes life a lot easier.”
“The 50p perscription pick up charge doesn’t bother me, it’s just so handy having a health service in the village.”
“I use the INN Shop regularly for the bits I miss when I’m at the super market and I also buy my fire wood from there too.”
User Story Board
One day Giles recieves an INN brochure through his pub door. He realises his business is not doing as well as it used to be so gives INN a call. He’s happy with the concept and agrees to pay a £500 start up fee.
2 weeks later Giles picks up the posters and monitors the results. He sees they all scored relatively highly, with post and meet most demanded for. He can’t afford to do them all at once so pays for £150 for Post and £150 for Meet to start with.
Renovations are made and Giles opens the doors to the public. He contacts local businesses and the local paper to raise awareness in the surrounding area.
An Inn expers arrives, assesses the pub and makes plans along side Giles and Inn HQ. Inn HQ come back with an affordable renovation cost.
6 months later and the pub is back on its feet. Tornover has sawed with Post turning over £1,000 and Meet turning over £3,750. This is enough to cover the inital renevation costs so Giles decides to take on Inn Health and Shop too.
Giles opens the pack, and reads the step by step guide. He also watches the DVD and checks out the mock ups of the INN app and web domain he will have access to.
The Inn expert presents local and national suppliers who Giles can link and do business with.
The Inn expert comes back to plan out the new renovations and establishes the links that could be made with local and national suppliers.
Giles pins up the marketing material around the village, on notice boards and behind the bar in order to see what the community need and want.
Giles and Sarah recieve training on how to run the additional services and how to maintain the Inn standard.
Giles is now overloaded with work and and advertises for staff wanted. Polly, a young mum living in the village offers to help and together Giles, Polly and Sarah recieve training for the additional services.

EXPLORATION PROJECT The next generation of home cooking and healthy eating
UNIVERSITY EXPLORATION PROJECT
Born into a family who run a catering franchise, I have been exposed to the catering market from a young age. It fascinates me how there are so many identical products, manufactured by the same factories but marketed to different consumers. Throughout the exploration project I discovered that home cooking is big business and there is a new wave of consumers with on-trend demands. This gives the opportunity for a food product that boasts health benefits, convenience and encourages experimentation. I utilised various design tools to draw insights and to challenge concepts created in response. This led to the generation of three concepts which have been refined and redefined to stand within the current market.
Wilco Vermeer, Entrepreneur and food innovator Unilever, Accelerom, Nestea, Granupure ‘I can see all three of the concepts succeeding if they went to market today. With the right marketing and campaigns to support them I believe that these products have answered your research direction very well, well done James.’

FREELANCE PROJECT
I formed a relationship with the Seven Stories Children’s Charity after having produced the Harry Potter House cut out for a university project. I took the opportunity to improve my design skills whilst working for a worthy cause which lead to the creation of a further two cut out activities and a number of conversations surrounding future exhibits and fun activities that could be run for the visiting children. The link is on-going and we still regularly keep in touch.
T-rex instructions 1) First colour in your T-rex. Don’t worry about going over the lines but don’t forget to leave the teeth white.
2) Fold the whole paper in half and cut along the dotted lines. Be careful not to cut the solid fold lines.
3) Fold the tip of the wing inside the mouth and staple in place.
4) Fold along the lines at the bottom of the cut lines which should open out the back gills.

PLACEMENT WORK
Whilst working at Polytime International Ltd. one of the speciďŹ c projects I worked on was to bring my Manager's phone case business idea to life. The brief was to create a cute and trendy brand directed at 16-35 year old females. This was an exciting task as I was able to design and develop a brand look and feel, producing over 150 designs and the marketing material that went with it, including point of sale and social media. I also worked with a Developer to create a website. I am thrilled to see my work on the shelves today.
