WEEK 3 READING: TITLE OF READING

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) Le Corbusier comprehends pictorial space as impenetrable when experienced from a distance. Subsequently, Le Corbusier insists space is flat when viewed in such circumstances. He attributes that the real, three-dimensional form, can only be discovered by inference; thus, the notion of pictorial space as frontality is an ideation, rather than reality in Le Corbusier’s perspective.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) The first property which contributed to the flatness of Le Corbusier’s paintings is the continuity between objects through conjoining and intersecting lines, otherwise known as ‘mariage de contour’. This ultimately accentuates the area of objects presented on the frontal plane and prevents lines being left floating alone. The second property is conceptual distance or depth, as tonal contrast would otherwise allude to three-dimensional space rather than pertain to frontality. Therefore, such properties are pitted against the use of blacks and contrast, but also the element of rotation; all of which create an experience of the real, rather than the frontal.

MARIO’S WORLD

3

1ST MARIO’S WORLD

Such an initial sketch was discarded as it lacked any variation in gradient and the drawings were centralised, providing little room for the second Mario image to be projected. Nonetheless, the drawing maintained isometric conventions, not being skewed or distorted.

4

COMBINED MARIO’S WORLD

The finished hand drawing maintains isometrics conventions throughout the projection, however, some areas are a few millimetres off 45 degrees. This will need to be corrected in illustrator. The composition itself is an accurate reflection of the assigned mario world images, differing with varioud add-ins; such as the caves, waterfall and joining towers.

WEEK 4 READING: TITLE OF READING Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? (Maximum 100 words) Perspective and axonometric projection differentiate by the means of which they convey space and motion. Axonometric projections are a representation of infinite space due to the absence of a vanishing point. Projections translate abstract information using precise measurement, possessing the capacity to record the infinite or what doesn’t exist. In contrast, the converging projectors of perspective provide a singular point of view. Although capturing what already exists, perspective lacks the same precision as axonometric.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words)

Axonometric projection first originated in a military context as means of ‘charting three dimensional trajectories of artillery projectiles’. The rationale behind the use of axonometric in such circumstances was that it helped answer questions of ‘measurability, prediction and verifiability’. However, axonometric projection came into public eye between 1918-21, where simultaneously the architectural and conceptual worlds were enlightened by this new means of representation other than perspective or orthogonal drawing. There had been a considerable shift in favouritism from the limited space of perspective, as people found more sense in the use of precise measurements and infinite space of axonometric.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD

The final presentation is an accuarte axonometric projection of the combined Mario Worlds, adhering to isometric conventions. The main focus of the design was to simultaneously incorporate hidden imaginative elements and create a dynamic terrain, which wasn’t flat nor had basic slopes. However, the design could be improved through inserting more characters, to make it seem more lively. 0.5 width lines used.

APPENDIX

Basic setup, of which I used a mounting board along with a set square and T-square. Was at times frustrating as the set square would snare on tape, providing inaccurate lines.

Progress shot of illustrator drawing, depicitng the terrain. I began tracing up the terrain first because it was the base, but also because the positioning of various elements would be made easier with the terrain acting as a guide.
