WE THE PEOPLE ART STUDIOS A CIVIL LIFE MOMENT ART BY JAMES E DANIELS JR .
Artist Statement I’m originally from Morganfield Kentucky . I moved a lot in my youth and grew up a little bit in Kentucky, Mississippi, Illinois, and Wisconsin. I’ve been in Rochester for 9 years now married with two kids. As far as my art is concern I’ve been making stuff since my dad gave me a sheet of paper to stop me from writing on the walls. The idea behind my art is a combination of all the things I’ve seen, heard or read in my life. It’s a thing that swells up in me and most often comes out in the form of a visual narrative or a story that won’t go away. I find myself falling back to the stories my mother and father told me about in their youth. Their myths, legends and tall tales seem to be a breeding ground for my imagination. I Loved to hear them talk about their childhoods. They grew up under Jim Crow laws, picked cotton, lived on farms and had the most amazing childhoods. My art is primarily about Black life but not only the life of riding on Freedom busses and black marches. But day to day life where Black people found a place to live, love and grow. I try not to get caught up in the Civil Rights movement but rather the Civil Life moment. My technique is mixed media. I switch and forth drawing, painting, college, and digital, doing whatever it takes to get the idea out. I hope you enjoy.

But art is not simply works of art; it is the spirit that knows Beauty, that has music in its soul and the color of sunsets ,that can dance on a flaming world and make the world dance, too." W.E.B Du Bois
