M A N I F E S TO

I formed a group who had similar ways of working to myself. It consisted of eight people who all shared the same ideas. We set about coming up with key words of how we like to work such as: interact, tangible and freedom. We all took part in writing these key words down onto our manifesto as we all enjoyed the analogue process just as much as the digital.

We were asked to create a piece of work which demonstrated our manifesto. As a group we wanted to create something fun and which also demonstarted the thought process behind our ideas. We recorded our conversation, discussing what work to produce which strangely enough became the work itself. We all assigned ourselves to a particular colour. During the conversation as someone had an idea their circle got bigger along with those who also shared thoughts. This turned into an animation of idea genereation. http://vimeo.com/24295366

Artist duo ‘The Girls ‘ came in to share their work and also set us a brief, which was to make a group portrait. We decided to use unconventional ways of taking a picture and so we used the photocopier. We then merged the faces together by printing on acetate and overlaping them. The idea stemmed from our manifesto, that we embrace collaborating together and sharing ideas.

MAKING DO

We had Mary Ikoniadou who was part of the Making Do publication. She asked to take the publication reinterprete it. The issue was all about translation and so we set out seperating the publication into six sections, which was the amount of our group. We then set a strict fifteen minute deadline to work on any pages we were given and then passed it onto the next person. This was because we all would have worked on each page within our new translated publication.

After the serial translation of the Making Do publication, we decided to do the same to Eye magazine. Here is an image in which we collaborated together, which was in the ‘Rag Factory’ gallery. This will hopefully be extended into making a publication similar to that of the Making do one we created and part of a series of translations.

APHORISM

We were placed in random groups as part of an emphasis on working with our peers who we have never worked with before. I felt this helped me show my skills more. I am more comfortable taking the lead with ideas and I felt I became the director along with Sinead Birmingham who I enjoyed working with. We decided on ‘a smile is the same in every language’. Sinead took a black and white video of rush hour in London. Mundane faces could be seen amongst the crowd and so we decided to introduce colour using post it notes. With each face which appeared on screen, we stuck a post it note on them which built up to a colourful image. http://vimeo.com/24295229

a letterpress of thoughts from the day

LETTERPRESS A WEEK

Lance De Vries and I here have produced a series of letterpresses, sharing our thoughts on that day. We completed one every week and picked a different colour each time. We used our own photography apart from the image on the right, of which is Justin Devon Moore’s screen print. I particularly like how we used black and white images along with the rich hue colours of the wood type. Our type layout became better throughout the weeks and hope to build on the skills I have learnt and become more creative.

Collage artist Martin O’Neill came in to give us a brief to create three dimensional type faces. My letter was ‘u’ from the word ‘soul’. I really enjoyed this workshop and suits my way of working, by freely expressing myself outside of sketchbooks and computers. This photo was put together by Richard De Cazalet.

SIEVING

As part of the Martin O’Neill workshop we were asked to produce a collage. I used strange publications to create this abstract visual, such as pottery books. I really enjoyed this spontaneous brief as we were only given a few minutes to complete and hang up on the wall. Vaughan Oliver came in to observe and particularly liked mine.

I L OV E T H E PA I N

Mark Pawson who I met at Hand Made & Bound came in and set us a brief to make a series of four badge designs. I didnt want to create just a visually interesting design but something that had more meaning. I challenged the notion on what a badge is and where else it can be worn, apart from on clothing. I chose to make a series of badges that could be pierced through the skin as a kind of fashion statement. This would be through the nose, lip, ear and knuckle and would be like jewellery.

PROMO VIDEO

I was approached to make a music video for a musical artist called Daryl Kellie. He wanted small samples of his music in one short video so that he can showcase it to potential investors. I asked Mika Vaajoki and Justin Devon Moore to be involved as I felt there knowledge and experience would be key. I really enjoyed working on the project and learnt a huge amount from everyone involved. The video can now be seen on Daryl’s website aswell as on Youtube. Daryl himself really liked the video and feels it could spur on a bright future for himself. http://vimeo.com/24295564

AUTUMN AGAIN

I visited Rachel Whiteread’s drawing exhibtion at the Tate Britain. I really enjoyed her work but was told she had done installation art. After some research I came across her installation in the Tate Modern a few years ago of the white boxes. At the time I did not know who did it but thoroughly liked the piece of work. In response to that piece of work I decided to produce something which was less static to Rachel’s work. Here I suspended sellotape from trees and documented the tape slowly dropping from the trees.

Just how well can we draw the country we live in? This was question I asked myself. I set about creating an interactive piece where a group of people would collaborate in making Great Britain and Ireland change. I asked people to try and accurately trace over traces the line drawing. This slowly morphed into just a circular blob.

FORM 7

For my letterpress induction I decided to photocopy random pages from books so that I could print over them. I came across one which had geometrical shapes which looked very interesting. ‘Form’ relates to the shapes I photocopied and the number ‘7’ is for the amount of days in a week we see shapes. The idea is that geomatry is always around us and part of our lives.

SELF TITLED

After my letterpress induction I tried to experiment more. I tired to fade out the type, however I much preferred placing the word ‘gone’ without furniture to keep the type in place.

SCANS OF SCANS

Here I experimented using the photocopier by placing a blank white piece of paper in the photocopier, and repeated the process. Slowly the paper picked up dust marks and also light which had seeped through the copier. The image got darker and darker until it was completely black.

B OX O F T H O U G H T S

Here is a collograph I produced to represent how my ideas come about. Starting in a small box and slowly grabbing pieces of inspiration from around me. The transparency shows that I never discredit anything and all ideas are taken into account.

S H A P E S I N S PAC E

As part of a dry point printing workshop, I experimented with different tools in order to gain a variety of textures.

LIGHT BLUE LINE

Justin Devon Moore and I here have started what is part of a bigger project. The aim is to visit every station in London and take images of the same colour as the line. The idea came from us joking around saying we should visit all the stations. Colour is a big theme on the underground so decided to produce a photographic journal of each line. Here we have travelled on Victoria line and documented everything blue within and outside that station. Each stop has a different double page spread. This has then been made into a publication, and plan to complete the other lines during the summer.

CUTTING FREEDOM

I was asked by Tom Hagerty to produce an image to be screen printed on top of the picture to the right. The theme was water. I decided to collage mountains and a baby swimming together along with ‘cutting’ shapes throughout the piece to give it a more abstract feel. I really enjoy collaborating with my peers and is something I want to push in the future.

I took part in helping put up the ‘Make Me Think’ exhibition at the Rag Factory in London. My screen print ‘Cutting Freedom’ was chosen for the show.

TYPE MORPH

During ‘The Lab Urjuan and I decided to develop my original idea of the Great Britain morph by making it into an interactive piece. We set up instructions of what to do. The aim was to ask people to select a letter and use the light box provided to trace the image. Slowly the type started to evolve and morph into wierd shapes that was not legible.

24 HOUR LAB

During The Lab there was a 24 hour slot provided for us to work throughout the night. I wanted to leave a memorial of the fifty people who took part. I therefore drew around everyone there including the teachers to form this wierd silouette. I felt there was a strong bond with everyone and this represents a united group. Tom Hagerty and Lance De Vries helped with the project while I photographed each person who took part, with and without their silouette. http://vimeo.com/24222848

are around to help you when needed. I have taken designs through to print, before I have not. I have tried to work on my weaknesses such as moving images in the Daryl Kellie movie and Type Morph projects. I want to define my practice in the summer so that I can work on developing my style in my final year of university. Overall I have enjoyed this semmester, this is down to the emphasis collaboration.
