LAND OF OAK AND IRON Visitor Centre

DP1

Location Date

Winlaton Mill, Tyne & Wear Autumn 2015

A space for innovative interpretation, showcasing of the area’s rich history and heritage, designed to compliment the surrounding landscape. An energy efficient, cost effective facility using local, sustainable materials and passive technologies, maximising natural light and forming a connection with the surrounding nature. The building and surrounding landscape promotes the use of bicycles in the Derwenthaugh park and attracts visitors to the area. Cycle-in stalls in the cycle hub provide a rest stop with direct access to the cafe, as well as cycle hire, maintenance and charging points.

Solar powered illuminated paving forms a cycle route that runs through the site adjacent to the building, creating a dialogue between the architecture and the cyclists. The path displays the history of the site whilst reflecting upon the vibrance and energy of cycling.

The visitor centre provides office accommodation a cafĂŠ, a gift shop retailing local arts and crafts, an information point including interactive digital interpretation, exhibition space showcasing the history of the Land of Oak & Iron, and cycle hub.

Located at important historical locations throughout Derwenthaugh Park, these cycle shelters provide locations for cyclists travelling along the C2C cycle trail to rest, fix their bikes, and take in the heritage and beauty of the surroundings.

REIMAGINING THE FARMHOUSE Artist’s Retreat

DP2

Location Date

Bushy Gap, Northumberland Winter 2015

The clients brief was to convert an existing barn into an art studio retreat, to be run as a business by the clients. There was also a requirement for 2 no. couples residences for the visitors to stay in during their week visit to the retreat. These are to comply with passive house standards. The current printing workshop will retain its original use, as well as serving as a reception and lounge area for visitors. The main section of the existing barn serves as the communal studio space for visitors, with a wet room and storage space connecting it to the printing workshop. A new extension to the South of the existing barn provides a gallery space for artwork to be displayed, whilst also acting as a flexible function space.

The flexible nature of the studio and gallery allow for a range of functions within each space. The simple boxes which provide storage in the printing workshop and studio can be rearranged to suit any purpose. The sliding stairs in the studio provide access to the mezzanine when required and can be hidden away into to the storage unit to provide a more open and flexible studio space.

The two guest retreats provide accommodation for up to 4 people visiting the studio. Each retreat complies with Passive house standards. The design of these residences provides the client with a range of massing options to choose from during the design phase. Each residence can be treated as an individual building for each couple, or two buildings can be combined if the client prefers a more communal living space.

Contained Autonomy DP3

Community Centre + Holiday Retreat Location Date

Dipton Mill, Hexham Spring 2016

The brief was for a series of small holiday homes which were unobtrusive to the surrounding landscape, to be designed with the aim of providing fully autonomous living for both guests and staff. The site is divided into three separate areas, each providing a different setting and an opportunity to alternate their functions. The central site provided an opportunity to provide a community centre for both guests and locals to use, providing a cafe, shop, office space, and a multi function room which could be hired out to locals to provide an alternate source of income for the project.

The community centre was designed to follow the contours of the landscape and blend in with the natural surroundings. The building is divided into two halves with a central covered outdoor space for communal congregation. One half serves the holiday guests with a reception, shop, laundrette and and staff office, whilst the other half SITE 2 SECTION C-C 1:200 services with a cafe and multi function room. provides local community

Each holiday home is constructed from recycled shipping containers, improving the sustainability of the project and also compliment the sloping landscape and loose ground, thereby improving construction time and cost. Both Sites 1 & 3 contain a mixture of 1, 2 & 3 bed homes, each designed with the potential to become permanent residences in the future. The two residential sites differ in their aesthetic approach and provide a varying experiences. Site 1 is open and uncluttered, whilst Site 3 is surrounded by vegetation, creating a sung environment, but both sites create a distant connection with the surrounding landscape.

DP1 INVERTED TERRACE Mixed Residences Location Date

Upper Parliament St, Liverpool Spring 2014

The main terrace facing the street is raised up a level, creating distance and privacy between the houses and the busy road, as well as providing parking space below. The main facade forms an atrium space which acts and the main entrance and dining space. A large focus was placed on materiality internally, dominated by red brick similar to that used on the neighbouring Georgian terraces, providing thermal mass to the atrium space, whilst the staircase and roof lights above providing passive ventilation. The interior is simple and rugged, using materiality to respond to the functionality of the house whilst drawing inspiration from the historic Toxteth riots which occurred nearby.

The existing Georgian terraces surrounding the site have formal outer facades but the space in the middle was dark and dirty. The theme of the design was inverting the focus of the traditional terrace from outwards to inwards, creating a green communal park in the central space. The external facades running along the street respond to the formality of the neighbouring terraces but the central space is informal, bright and open.

DP2 Flow Gallery Art Gallery Location Date

The Strand, Liverpool Winter 2013

The brief asked for an art gallery to be designed on a site neighbouring the iconic “Three Graces” with potential to influence Liverpool’s iconic riverside cityscape. It would display art exhibitions based on local architecture, as well as temporary exhibitions from the nearby Tate gallery. The brief allocated a specific dominant building material for the entire project. This focus on one building material, of which I was allocated concrete, allowed us to explore that material’s capabilities as well as its weaknesses. In order to understand the capabilities of concrete I developed test samples using varying proportions of ingredients and admixtures, such as aggregate size and type, reinforcements and colour pigments.

I built my own conceptual, self-supporting ramp out of concrete and tested its strength to understand the capabilities and limitations of concrete. The success of the test model lead to the concept of a series of platforms which step up with the landscape and clearly define various sections of the gallery, appearing to float independently from one another.

The building works with the slope of the landscape and steps up as you move back through the building, becoming brighter as you move through the levels. Each level is orientated towards a different view out and the artwork is organised by level to complement each view.

Concrete louvres were included as an additional architectural feature which protected the artwork as well as providing interest by playing with natural light entering the space. I designed and tested the louvres myself using models and a lamp to mimic the changing sun position.

The concept behind the design was to treat the building as a sculpture, almost as if it were part of the exhibition. Ornamentation is kept to a minimum, therefore accentuating the beauty of the concrete, particularly in the architectural features, as well as focusing attention on the artwork.

CENTRIC PAVILION Public Pavilion

ST

Location Date

Falkner Square, Liverpool Autumn 2013

For this short exercise of designing a public pavilion, I drew inspiration from the surrounding Georgian terraces and the free-form footpaths running through the site to create a bright, minimalist structure that focused on the flow of people through the building and the use of natural light to draw people through the space. Designed as an architectural promenade, visitors are lead on a journey through the building, entering at the dark, narrow ground floor and gradually becoming lighter as you progress upwards, growing to a climax at the open terrace first floor, which provides seating for a potential performance space. The roof incorporates an adjustable panel which creates variations between light and shadow.

X1 MEDIA CITY D1

Residential + Retail Location Date

Media City, Salford Winter - Summer 2015

Located in the thriving area of Manchester’s Media City this will be the largest residential development in the North West. These four iconic towers dominating the Salford Quays skyline will boast a mix of studios, 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments, with the first and second floor space being offered for commercial and retail units. Already home to iconic buildings such as the BBC and ITV television, this landmark development is located within the midst of Media City, adding to the £1.4 billion of public and private investment that has made this area one of the key growth areas in the country.

My role in this project was to create a full Revit model of the first of four towers, with a parking basement, a ground floor level for retail, a second floor plant and 25 levels of accommodation. The brief asked for various apartment sizes following the accommodation schedule. I designed the layout of each apartment and arranged them to sit within the footprint of each level to achieve the required percentage split of apartment. A suitable circulation core had to be designed to run all the way through the tower and connect suitably with the retail ground floor and basement parking level. A range of penthouse and duplex apartments were required as an alternative for the upper levels. I also created a Sketchup model of all 4 towers and designed a façade pattern from windows and different sized panel modules to coordinate with the internal layouts to be used for creating advertisement and press release visualisations.

LEEDS STATION TRANSPORT + RETAIL Location Date

New Station St, Leeds Summer 2015

AHR was appointed by Network Rail in May 2012 to review the existing Leeds City Station and develop a masterplan that would provide a long term vision for the station’s future development. The vision is to create a station complex befitting its significance as a primary gateway to Leeds City Core and improve access and circulation to enable the station to accommodate projected increases in rail passengers. The brief asked for the existing historical North Concourse to be retained whilst the dark and cramped South Concourse would be demolished to make way for a new, modern 2 storey concourse containing improved retail and increased office space. The external pedestrian and vehicle access at both entrance points also needed to be improved to cope with the increased quantity of visitors resulting from the addition of new platforms.

My role in this project was to analyse archived plans from the 1930’s to Network Rail determine the hidden structure of one of the North Concourse facades that is to be retained and created a model in Revit based onLeedsthose drawings. I Station Master Plan developed 3 roof options for the main concourse, each with a different design focus and budget and developed a detailed Sketchup model of Level thePlansselected GF & Mezzanine option. I also designed a 4 level circulation core to sit within the constraints of existing structure walls which connects the platform to an existing office 2012.00160.000 1 : 500 @A1 building above, as well as developing ground floor and mezzanine floor plans (SK) 150106 Info of the full scheme, including a new office block which sits above the station. client name
