Introduction

This semester involved intricate yet minimised designs which involved the combination of two random functions. The process would be to develop a building situated on 142 Clarence in Sydney CBD and to be no more than a volumetric cube measuring 10m x 20m x 25m, this also ensured that the design would not exceed the existing building height. The two functions that were chosen for the proposal was to be a combination between crematorium and an industrial bakery. One function relying upon the values of synesthesia; smell, touch and taste. Whilst the other, would rely on values of destruction and minimalism. Both functions open up to a mysterious yet beautiful combination when places together in a compact, modernised space. 142 Clarence St thusforth became the field of experimentation and freedom, however still enclosed by a veil of unforeseen restrictions which, in synergy with freedom, created challenging learning experiences to s trategise methods of overcomming height restrictions and views. By closing off the two northern, eastern and southern side of the building lot, the subject building felt crushed and enclosed by the adjacent stone and brick towers which felt slightly overpowering. What must we do to reawakened power and beauty of 142 Clarence street? Stepping foot upon a brand new start on a multistorey building with medium to high density will set up an unexplored level of detail, geometry with relevant and succint meaning rooting back to the fundamentals of a bakery and a crematorium confined together in one lot.

RESPONDING TO THE SITE For the premises of this assignment, 142 Clarence Street became the main site for the Bakery and Crematorium duo function building. Much of the site does not contain any kind of vegetation apart from the deciduous trees that lie opposite eachother along Clarence Street. This particular site expressed a very aged characteristic of which i found to be powerful and robust.

RESPONSE TO SITE CONT.

Despite having a lack of sunlight within the building, A developed system of awnings and sunroofing became ideal for the current positioning of the building, However, What happens to the very core of the building? The heat of the crematorium and bakery idea would not have succeeded without following the ideologies of wind uplifts and open roofs. With this, the core of the building would be able to maintain suitable and appropriate temperatures as the hot air rises through the top of the building. This also allows sunlight to provide impeccable soft lighting on the staircase, elevator and circulation passages within the building. Lack of vegetation allowed the project to thrive in an environment dominated by stone and masonry, Thus concrete, being made in similar fashion would have brought a unique and enticing addition to the street scape and preserve the pre-established heritage.

CONCEPT COLLAGE Collaging was an initiative taken to ensure the abstract clarity of the narrative and espress the integrity of both functions, the goal of this collage was to allow viewers to grasp the connection between the dead and living, forming a contrast between synthesis and destruction whilst allowing both elements to thrive within the same environment and sharing the same space and coexisting, ultimately realising that without one, there is no other. Without death and destruction, there is no birth and creation.

RENDERING ITERATIONS Selected works “One of the great beauties of architecture is that each time, it is like life starting all over again.” Renzo Piano

FINAL PARALINE DIAGRAM Paralines are methods of demonstrating clarity, materiality and accounting for populations of peoplem, this particular diagram was a way for me to clarify that each and every aspect of the building was accessible by everyone and shared by anyone.

BUILDING BACK THE TROPICS THE FINAL ITERATION AND PRESENTATION (SEMESTER 2)

A project begins with the simple understanding of how one experiences the spacial thresholds and atmospheres of their own home, starting and ending at the bed that we allow our vulnerable selves to rest upon each night. As we carefully tread through the detailed and complex ideas of creating a home, we begin to branch out of our comfort zones until what we would understand and define as home does not simply mean our own shelter, but the shelter of every family, couple and individual walking and breathing every single day. Ultimately placing us at birthplace of our story, the TROPICS.

THIS SECION OF THE PORTFOLIO FOCUSES ON THE HANDDRAWN ELEMENTS OF A PRECEDENT STUDY OF 9 - 10 STOCK ORCHARD STREET. AN ARCHITECTURAL WORKSHOP MANAGED BY THE SARAH WIGGLESWORTH TEAM BASED IN THE UNITED KINGDOM. THE MULTIFUNCTIONAL BUILDING WAS A SUSTAINABLE WAY TO BUILDING, FOCUSING ON MINIMISING MATERIAL WASTE AND EFFECTIVE VENTILATION BY USING LOUVRES AND STACKED VENTILATION.

VIEWS AND THERMAL STACKING

PLANTATION

NATURAL SUNLIGHT

USING STEEL VENT FOR THERMAL STACKING EFFECTIVELY REDUCES THE HEATING LOAD ON THE BUILDING EMITTING HOT AIR OUT OF THE TOP AND ESTABLISHING VIEWS

USING PLANTS WITH BUILT IN RAINWATER SYSTEM FOR SELF SUSTAIN

ROOF WINDOWS ALLOW NATURAL DAYLIGHT FACING THE NORTH WESTERN FACADE

Cross Ventilation strategies using simple pathways and open planning

Simple pathways for foot paths for efficient vehicle and walking routes

Even privacy and yard space for all family types

Use of skillion roof enables thermal stacking to take place, high ceiling levels towards the facade allow for extra metal louvres letting out heat at the highest point of the interior

Using the louvre system for the building allows for extra solar shading, preventing heat gain in the summer and letting head in through the glass sliding entrance doors during the winter. Suspended flooring additionally assists with heat gain throughout all times of the year.

Absence of glass in the building allows for air to pass through louvres while keeping effective sunlight and solar gains.

The Spaces In between The master planning for the entire project revolves around the pockets of space that lies in between two of each family type. The spaces that lie in between each building forms spaces and places for groups and individuals to communicate and form bonds. Bonds are a crucial part of surviving in isolated tropical environments thusforth giving each family their own privacy space whilst simultaneously encouraging the beauty that lies in between socialising, gatherings and friendship

False walls are fixed thermal control units which help reduce the heating load on exterior wall members. The wall is simply comprised of corrugated steel sheets bolted to softwood ply battens that have been placed to leave a cavity between the wall and metal sheeting. The idea behind this mechanism is so that cold air passes up beneath and in between the cavity of the false wall releasing hot air out through the top cavity. Using metal sheeting additionally reflects sunlight off onto other materials reducing the amount of heat onto the timber walls. This strategy is to be placed on the South west and North eastern fronts of all building such that these false walls will not obstruct openings and break the flow of any cross ventilation strategies placed on the South east and North western fronts.

The Sharing Singles

The Couple house

Use of timber structural members in synergy with steel foundation supports and roof support members is uniquely designed for structural integrity against natural disasters but also for the low maintenance and delightful aesthetics. Steel members additionally compliment the aesthetics of the steel louvres which is one main design principle for stacked ventilation.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE THE FOLLOWING WORKS ARE THE SELECTED WORKS THAT I HAVE CHOSEN TO REPRESENT WHAT I AM CAPABLE OF IN THE WORKING ENVIRONMENT, THE SELECTED WORKS ARE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING WORKS THAT I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN, THUS MAKING IT NOTEWORTHY. I DO BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A LONG ROAD BEFORE CONSIDERING MYSELF A PROFESSIONAL. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO VIEW MY MOST PERSONAL EXHIBITION.
