Wai Kau resort means “water tree� and refers to the two most important generative site elements: water and vegetation. On a site scale, the project creates a series of microclimates along a natural stream which defines the built extents. The stream forms a spine alone which the resort moves; major buildings are concentrated in three groups defined by unique microclimates along this spine, placed in order to take advantage of views, water proximity, and natural ventilation according to t o p o g r a p h y .

A parametric “spine,” running the length of the stream which bisects the site, is constructed. A series of sections, also developed parametrically, is skinned to provide a building framework.

RAIN [usage]

A parametric roof surface component is part of an overall resource-conservation strategy which seeks to collect and use rainwater in the most efficient manner possible. Different programs and microclimates are categorized according to their resource needs, and an energy/water distribution system is configured accordingly.

Roof surface component - provides rain shelter while exluding rain and direct sun - allows varying amounts of indirect sunlight to enter - in array, creates a roof which collects, transports, stores, and uses rainwater - in array, individual components may be fully closed to create a self-irrigating green roof

Functions as structural louver


A prototypical table folds so the leg structure nests inside the tabletop. The table is height-adjustable as assembled: legs lock into grooves under the table at any point along their length and are held in compression by the friction of the plywood and weight of the table, negating any need for fasteners.

Bookshelf&Luminaire Lighting&Acoustics Spring 2007

A luminaire desinged for dorm use incorporates three adjustable lights into a bookshelf. Installed above a desk, the shelf provides storage and task-adjustable direct and indirect lighting


The PUBLIC HOUSING development carries neighborhood social dynamics and economic status into a system of interspersed semi-public green spaces which pierce and naturally ventilate twenty-two componentized, reconfigurable dwelling units. As part of a COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN strategy, the project’s structure, building details, zoning and code compliance, and energy usage is examined.

HOUSING Fall 2006 Design Studio MIAMI, FLORIDA: LITTLE HAITI NEIGHBORHOOD


Interior spaces are naturally cross-ventilated and each unit faces a semi-private green courtyard.

Twenty-four dwelling units are initially identical but feature reconfigurable interior partitions for adaptability. Quick and easy Tilt-slab unit wall construction takes advantage of local unskilled labor and alternates with conventional poured-in-place concrete slabs.

THE COMMONS, ITHACA, NY Seipp Memorial Prize: Second Place SPRING 2007 DESIGN STUDIO


A design for a pavilion adjacent to Ithaca Commons capitalizes on a “secondary Commons” consisting of service alleys behind buildings which front the Commons. The alleyways are home to graffiti artists and their recurring tags; a particular artist’s pattern can be discerned from recurrent tags. A surface supporting informal cafe, theater, and gallery programs moves through secondary spaces behind the commons and is strategically deconstructed to allow views of clandestine alleyway activity. These views from the pavilion highlight images (painted graffiti and projected video) which occupy the slab sides of the Commons’ buildings.
