The Top 4 Habits of Effective Leaders

JAMES F. KENEFICK | JAMESFKENEFICK.COM

Effective leaders get where they are one day at a time. These daily activities aren’t often the ones that get noticed. It’s the days where big events happen that go down in history. But it’s the little things they do dayto-day that get them to those larger known events. So how do leaders manage their daily activities for long term success?

1. They Are Always Thinking About Improvement

The most successful and effective leaders know that they are not perfect and never will be. Improvement is a daily goal for both themselves and the people they’re leading. These people make a habit of reading, taking classes, and learning from their own mistakes. Many of the most effective leaders report that they have made a habit of reading for twenty minutes every day.

They encourage this behavior in their followers. As business leaders, they offer training opportunities. This helps the individuals they lead, but also the overall team to reach greater goals down the road.

2. They Are Solution-Oriented Great leaders aren’t looking at who to blame when things go wrong. Ultimately, as the person in charge, they take responsibility at the end of the day. Instead, they are solution oriented. What can we learn from this mistake? How do we fix this problem? This is a mindset that doesn’t always come naturally, but they make a habit of asking the right questions.

3. HEALTHY COMMUNICATION STANDARDS ARE A PRIORITY Many of the successful leaders of the world report that they keep their communication habits to a specific time of day. For example, they answer emails at the beginning of their workday and the end, but never outside of those times.

It’s a priority for them to communicate with their teams, so they do it at critical times of day that are predictable. They make a habit of making sure their goals and expectations are outlined. They make a habit of being available for questions from their followers. But an important part of this habit is also not letting communication interrupt their whole day.

3. HEALTHY COMMUNICATION STANDARDS ARE A PRIORITY If you don’t get a full night’s rest, how are you supposed to effectively communicate ideas to the people you lead? If you aren’t eating well, how are you supposed to make it through everything on your list for the day? Effective leaders take care of their bodies and minds so they can be there for the people who depend on them.
