"Unsinkable Sailors by retired US Navy Reserve Captain Paul Sherbo is a chilling historical account of the at -sea collision of the USS Frank E. Evans (DD-745), a United States Navy destroyer, and the Australian Bio...of original interviews and aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne. This book is the only comprehensive source research along with official naval records that centers on the Evans crewmembers. The story of the collision that sank the bow half of the Evans is told by those who lived the nightmare on the morning of 3 June in 1969. It is a story of personal tragedy, survival and perseverance." BIOGRAPHY
Paul Sherbo was commissioned in the US Navy in 1976, graduating from ROTC at the University of Kansas. He served four years on active duty, qualifying as a Surface Warfare Officer aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. Paul commanded six Reserve units. He was recalled to active duty twice, once as Battle Watch Captain for Pacific Fleet and once to serve as the Fifth Fleet’s representative to Coalition Forces in Iraq. There he worked on a variety of issues, including rebuilding the Iraqi Navy, protection of Iraqi oil platforms and coordination among various Coalition forces. He retired from the Reserves after 30 years of service in 2006. Paul’s commentaries on a variety of topics have been published in the Rocky Mountain News, the Denver Post, Navy Times and USNI Proceedings. He is the author of two books, "Unsinkable Sailors: The rise and fall of the last crew of USS Frank E. Evans" and "Fish Out of Water (A Sailor in a Desert War)," published by Patriot Media and available at PaulSherbo.com. Paul's is married to Diana Carlson (COMNAVSHERBO), who works for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Their son, Andy, is in the US Army; oldest daughter Katherine lives and works in Los Angeles; and youngest, Lenna, is also in the Army. Paul has been a student of martial arts, even though he is old enough to know better. In March of 2003, a coalition of countries headed by the United States invaded Iraq. Two months later, President Bush declared the end of major combat operations. It was almost a year later that the Navy recalled Paul Sherbo to active duty. At that time, one of Paul’s fellow Reservists was sure the war was winding down and Paul would be home in just six months. It wasn’t winding down. He was not home in six months. Admitting he was “not one of the 19-year-old American warriors kicking in doors in Fallujah,” Paul says, it was nonetheless an expedition into unfamiliar territory. “I began this journey as a married father of three in my early 50s with a good job, a transplanted Iowa boy living and working in the Denver area. I was a captain in the Navy Reserve with a decent amount of sea-time on active duty behind me. None of 2 this prepared me for a ground war insurgency in a desert.
Presidents Corner This last Wednesday, April 12, we met again at the American Legion Post there at 5400 East Yale (corner of I-25 and Yale) for our Monthly Rocky Mountain Navy Luncheon. And for the first time since we lost our old meeting place at the Breckenridge Brewery, we had over thirty there. Believe much, if not all of this increase, was due to our noted speaker (who is one of our members), retired Navy Captain Dick Life, a long time intelligence officer, who spoke on "Putin." His talk was extremely well received, and tells me we need to build on this and keep getting excellent speakers to follow in his wake. And we have a good one this coming May 3rd monthly luncheon. We also met in our own room, which works much better, and certainly does for a speaker. We passed a motion to pay the Post $25 per meeting for the use of that space. And I believe it is well worth it. CAPT Dick Zalman has agreed to be our go between with the people there at the Legion Post. And for those of you there, you know we need to make changes to the way the food is brought out, as taking the orders all at one time and then for the orders to come out two at a time, meant some didn't get their food until after the speaker had completed his talk. Am suggesting to see if it wouldn't make more sense for the waiter to take food orders as members arrive (starting at 1130 hours) and then the food will come out much closer to the time one orders it. Two more things; please save late afternoon Saturday, July 22. Will be announcing our summer get together which I think every one will want to come to it. And CDR Joe Golding will shortly be announcing our Golf outing, probably in August. Thanks for all of you attending and participating. And thanks to CAPT Jim Garrett for our newsletter and website. He is always looking for interesting Navy and military news beyond what is reported through our nation or local newspapers or on television. Much going on that we don't get through those sources. So if you have something, please e-mail it to him at garrettj3745@comcast.net My Best, Dick Young

Kremlin's super-weapon powered by scramjet technology is faster than a speeding bullet. By James Billington, International Business Times March 27, 2017 15:01 BST
Link…….. Russia claims to have created a devastating hypersonic missile that travels five times faster than the speed of sound and could rip through navy warship defenses because it's too fast to stop. The Kremlin's Zircon missile has been called "unstoppable", "unbeatable" and "undefendable" with a 4,600mph speed that only one defense system in the world can destroy – that system is owned by Russia.
