Artist Portfolio

So you like to make art. You could be a sculptor, painter, pottery maker, jewelry designer, or maybe you are good at pencil drawings. Whatever your art form of choice may be, you probably want to sell your work, or convince people to hire you to create a custom piece. If so, you need an artist portfolio. An artist portfolio is a collection of photos that showcase your artwork. It can be a binder, a folder, a briefcase, photo album, scrapbook, or any method you choose. You can also create an electronic portfolio on a website, iPad, or laptop. Whatever method you choose, just make sure your artist portfolio is easy for your prospective clients to access and view. Why do you need an artist portfolio? An artist portfolio is vital to your success as an artist because it allows your prospective clients and buyers to see what you can do. They can see what kind of art you do, how much detail you can provide, what styles you can make, and much more. In the realm of art and design, a picture truly is worth a thousand words. You can tell someone that you are a great sculptor, but until they see a photo of that fantastic sculpture you made last month, they will never fully understand what you can do.

Here are a couple things to remember when compiling your portfolio: Keep it current. Update it frequently with your latest work. Your skills will improve over time, so if your portfolio is showing pictures of your work five years ago, you are probably not showcasing your best work. Keep it simple. Don’t put too many pictures in it. You don’t want to bore the people reading it. Choose a limited number of your best pictures that showcase the different styles you can create. Use good quality photos. This is your chance to impress the person skimming your portfolio- so make sure your photos do your work justice. If you can’t afford to have a professional photographer take your pictures, try to make them as good as possible. Your artist portfolio is a very important part of your self-promotion, so take the time to make sure it is professional and gives a fantastic first impression!
