What Shoes are Good for Salsa Dancing?

Dance season is coming up, and you are a new aspiring dancer. You are preparing to enter your first salsa dance competition, where to dance professionally is key to winning. So far, your practice has been mainly in your basement or living room. You’ve been using your old tennis shoes; but as any athlete will tell you, having the right shoes for the job can make the difference between winning or losing, tired feet and injury. You want to catch people’s attention- and not by falling down because your shoes were not designed for salsa dancing. Would a basketball player wear ballet slippers? It might be comical, but not effective. So what shoes will not work for salsa dancing? Here are a few examples of shoes that should be avoided at all costs, since they can cause injury to your knees, ankles, or feet, as well as making you look foolish at a dance competition, where to dance in tennis shoes is pretty much asking for a score of zero. Avoid these shoes during dance season so you can make a good impression and prevent injuries. Wrong Shoes Tennis Shoes. These are great for their namesake- tennis. But wearing these shoes during a dance competition or on a dance floor is a very bad idea. The slick rubber soles do not turn well on the floor, which causes ankle and knee stress. Sneakers. Very similar to tennis shoes. Sneakers might occasionally work ok on a dance floor that is very slick, but more than likely you will still have problems. Also, most dance clubs, where to dance in sneakers is prohibited, will not allow you to dance at all.

Flip Flops. You will never see a serious dancer wear flip flops during dance season or at a dance competition. In fact, they will not wear flip flops no matter where they dance, because only a beginner dancer would make this mistake. Bowling shoes. Where to dance the salsa does not include a bowling alley lane. Therefore, bowling shoes should never be worn as dance apparel. They are too slippery and the shoe has no flexibility. So what are the right shoes to wear for salsa dancing?Right Shoes DanSneakers. Like sneakers, but they have a split rubber sole that grips differently than normal sneakers. Where to dance with these shoes? They work for salsa dancing both inside and outside. Many dance competitions will allow these shoes. Dress Shoes. Pick dress shoes with a non-rubber or leather sole. They may be a bit bulky, but you will get used to it after a full dance season. Boots. Regular women’s boots work great for salsa dancing. Cowboy boots could be worn as well by men or women, but shouldn’t those be left for the hoedown back home? Salsa Shoes. These are by far the best shoes you can wear for salsa dancing. Salsa shoes have a suede sole, are flexible and very lightweight. Where to dance in these shoes? Not outside by any means! They will be ruined if you wear them on wet surfaces, cement, or outside. It’s a good idea to only wear them on the dance floor. Women should pick a salsa shoe with straps to hold the foot in while dancing. Shoes without straps will “flipflop”, causing blisters or the loss of a shoe while dancing. Bad blisters can prevent you from being able to perform for a good portion of the dance season, especially if they get infected. New salsa shoes will be a bit tight at first, but after being worn in the leather will stretch and become molded to your foot. Watch out for scrunched toes; make sure they have room to wiggle. Women don’t need socks when wearing the strappy salsa shoes, but men should have on thin dress socks. So whether you are a beginner coming up on your first dance season or dance competition, remember these tips on choosing your salsa shoes. When wondering where to dance in your new shoes, pick locations that won’t damage them. With the proper footwear, you will be able to perform better, longer, and have even more fun.
