How to Be a Model: Part 2 4. Just be YOU. If you are meeting with an agent, it’s tempting to want to change your look- buy new clothes, get false eyelashes, etc to show you know how to be a model. But it’s better to just be you. If you can’t be comfortable with your own style, how will you be comfortable in front of the camera? Don’t be concerned with changing who you are to impress an agent or modeling agency. Most agents want to see you without makeup, your own natural hair, and your own personality. This is the “blank slate” that they will be working with, so let them see the entire package. Wear something form-hugging so they can see your figure; avoid a tent dress! 5. Speak up! Models with a good, vibrant personality always go far. When you are in an interview, show them you know how to be a model with personality: sit up straight, don’t chew gum, and look them in the eyes as you talk to them. Modeling agents want to find people who are not shy or nervous, and can express themselves easily. The models that do the best in this industry are ambitious, confident, professional, and still humble (no one likes an arrogant, self-centered diva!) Be early and prepared for all auditions; this will show that you are professional and know how to be a model.
7. Don’t sign until you read! If the agency likes you and makes an offer, hold off on the happy dance as you sign your life away. Take the time to read the whole contract first, and pay attention to your gut feeling. Do you feel uncomfortable in any way? Do you have unanswered questions that should be addressed first? Make sure you completely understand what you are getting into before you sign that contract. If the agency or agent are pressuring you to sign before you feel comfortable or have a chance to read through everything, then you may want to consider continuing your search- they might not be trustworthy. Read the fine print- do they expect you to do nude shoots or other things you may not be comfortable with? You must learn to be a model who questions everything- or hire your own representing agent to look into those things for you. 8. Be safe! How to be a model: NEVER go to a remote place alone with a supposed agent. Many aspiring models have been abducted by people posing as modeling agents who want to “do an audition photo shoot” in a non-public place. Make sure you meet in a public place or bring a friend until you know that they are a legitimate company and you feel comfortable with them. This is another reason why doing your research is so important; if you can’t find any information about their company, it’s probably a fake. However, someone can pose as an agent from a reputable company, so follow these safety rules even if the agent claims to be from Vogue. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is, so take extra precautions if you see any red flags. Call the company to confirm that they actually work for them. You must learn how to be a model who can recognise and avoid potentially dangerous situations.
