Designer Philosophy:
My design philosophy and process is linear and based on form. I believe that environments function best when some sort of grid is integrated into the design. However, this grid does not have to be explicitly implied or forced. An underlying, less apparent grid can prove to be equally efficient when it comes to spaces. My design approach is to gather information regarding a project, then I try to analyze the information to see if any initial grids develop from the site in its current condition. I then choose to either further develop this existing grid or create a new grid that may provide for better functionality or asthetics. Ultimately this grid should provide for the framework of combining humans and the environment into one cohesive design.

295 Hill St Concept 1 In this modern yard design, a mixture of different hardscape materials were used in order to evoke different feelings within different spaces and rooms. By using a small number of different materials, the design is able to remain clean and unified. Throughout this design, a rectilinear form was used by playing off strong lines of the architecture. A series of terraces were used in order to create more intimate and personal spaces near to the house. These terraces are separated by elevated planting beds which feature seatwalls. These elevated beds act as a barrier and create gateways into different spaces within the yard.

295 Hill St Concept 2 This design features primarily curvilinear and circular elements. This design contrasts the rectlinear architecture. The main areas of interest are laid out as adjacent circles. this allows for the spaces to be interconnected while maintaining their intimacy. By using curvilinear paths and circular spaces, it allows for each space flows naturaly into the next. This design features different size patios that act as different rooms along with open lawns to allow for a multitue of different uses.

Moss Side Community 13
Mixed Use Development These sketches illustrate what many different elements of this development could look like and how they would function. They illustrate the townhomes near the commercial district (lower Left), the heart of the commercial corridor (lower right, middle right), and one of the leisure spaces available to residents and those who vistit this commercial area (top right). These give a glimpse into the potential that this development has to offer to the residents of Athens.

The Oaks at Moss Side is a place to live, shop, relax, work, and have fun. There is a diversity of available living units. Occupants can choose from 36 single family lots and 41 townhomes. There are also apartment buildings over some of the commercial development. All of these units are connected to the rest of the community through a small grid system. The commercial area is built around a central oval with a large pavilion with a clock tower on top. Residents and guests have access to open green patches throughout this development which allows for recreation and relaxation. This is a walkable community that also includes two bus stops. This allows the residents to be independent from an automobile and gives them the option to use alternative methods of transit.

Albany Museum of Art 17
Albany Museum of Art This project features a redesign of the property surrounding the Albany Museum of Art. The Museum wished to include a sculpture garden that would be open to people visiting the museum and to students from Darton College. They also wished to increase their parking without making it unattractive. This design creates an intimate space with multiple levels close to the rear of the building which would function as the main sculpture garden. This design features a radial design with the center point being the center of teh main auditorium. The curvilinear elements contrast with the angular lines of the architecture.

About the Author: My name is James Alan Kelly Jr. I was born and raised in Longmont, Colorado. I grew up in a town of 86,000 people which contained a multitude of parks and path systems. These systems provided residents to have easy access to and from different green spaces within the city. I was first introduced to Landscape Architecture upon my arival to the University of Georgia and instantly knew this is the profession for me. I am very interested in community and residential design. I want to focus on green infrastructure and storm water management practices and create bike-able communitys that are connected by open green and park spaces throuhout.
