Designer Philosophy:
My design philosophy and process is linear and based on form. I believe that environments function best when some sort of grid is integrated into the design. However, this grid does not have to be explicitly implied or forced. An underlying, less apparent grid can prove to be equally efficient when it comes to spaces. My design approach is to gather information regarding a project, then I try to analyze the information to see if any initial grids develop from the site in its current condition. I then choose to either further develop this existing grid or create a new grid that may provide for better functionality or asthetics. Ultimately this grid should provide for the framework of combining humans and the environment into one cohesive design.

295 Hill St Concept 1 A series of terraces were used in order to create more intimate and personal spaces near the house. These terraces are separated by elevated planting beds which feature seat walls. These elevated beds act as a barrier and create gateways into different spaces within the design.

By using curvilinear paths and circular spaces, it allows for each space to flow naturally into the next. This design features different size patios that act as different rooms along with open lawns to allow for a multitude of different uses.

They illustrate the townhomes near the commercial district (top right), the heart of the commercial corridor (lower right), and one of the leisure spaces available to residents and those who vistit this commercial area (top left). These give a glimpse into the potential that this development has to offer to the residents of Athens.

The Oaks at Moss Side is a place to live, shop, relax, work, and have fun. There is a diversity of available living units. Occupants can choose from 36 single family lots and 41 townhomes. There are also apartment buildings over some of the commercial development. All of these units are connected to the rest of the community through a small grid system. The commercial area is built around a central oval with a large pavilion with a clock tower on top. Residents and guests have access to open green patches throughout this development which allows for recreation and relaxation. This is a walkable community that also includes two bus stops. This allows the residents to be independent from an automobile and gives them the option to use alternative methods of transit.

About the Author: My name is James Alan Kelly Jr. I was born and raised in Longmont, Colorado. I grew up in a town of 86,000 people which contained a multitude of parks and path systems. These systems provided residents to have easy access to and from different green spaces within the city. I was first introduced to Landscape Architecture upon my arival to the University of Georgia and instantly knew this is the profession for me. I am very interested in community and residential design. I want to focus on green infrastructure and storm water management practices and create bike-able communitys that are connected by open green and park spaces throuhout.
