OVERSEAS PASSENGER TERMINAL UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES

The proposed master plan for Sydney Circular Quay and the Overseas Passenger Terminal presents an opportunity to develop an architectural scheme that responds to the present layers and geometry contained with the Quay, with an intent to extend them from their immediate precinct to greater, connected surrounds. Architectural layering of elements based on existing and historical topographical indicators around the Quay precinct enables plurality of function, which can be dependent on need and use.

Instead of creating an building block of 6 various units, the main intent of the project was to create 6 each individual residences sitting on the sloping site, creating unique individual houses that also unites as one complete building when viewed together. The nature of the design proposal required careful articulation to provide privacy while allowing sunshine, passive solar gains as well as views towards the beach. It was also part of the council regulation that each house had at least one parking space of their own. The main concept of the project was that each individual houses lifted above ground to secure much needed views of the beach and the building resemble the aboriginal meaning of “boondi. The aim was to design a building that seems as if water and the wave was to break on the water-break.

WIND URBANISM MANHATTAN THE COOPER UNION

Regional wind

Manhattan wind pattern

Wind Urbanism Wind becomes a new design generating tool to develop an urban grid for Manhattan. The original Manhattan grid is overlayed with the wind pattern discovered through simulations and actual predominant wind analysis of New York regional area. The wind, its path becomes a new path for an urban grid. This concept differs from the concept of responding to nature. Instead the nature becomes the element, a tool, a new generator for urban design.

M.ARCH II THESIS THE COSMIC ORDER THE COOPER UNION

Eight Trigrams

Cosmic representation of the fundamental of reality of seen as a range of eight interrelated concepts. A bagua map is a tool used in modern forms of feng shui to map a room or location and see how the different sections correspond to different aspects in one’s life. These sections are believed to relate to every area or aspect of life and are divided into such categories as: fame, relationships/marriage, children/creativity, helpful people/travel, career, inner knowledge, family/ancestors/health, and wealth/blessings. In this system, the map is intended to be used over the land, one’s home, office or desk to find areas lacking good chi, and to show where there are negative or missing spaces that may need rectifying or enhancing in life or the environment. For example, if the bagua grid is placed over the entire house plan and it shows the toilet, bathroom, laundry, or kitchen in the wealth blessings area it would be considered that the money coming into that particular environment would disappear very fast, as if to be ‘going down the drain.’

24 Solar Terms

Points in traditional East Asian lunisolar calendars that matches a particular astronomical event or signifies some natural phenomenon. The points are spaced 15° apart along the ecliptic and are used by lunisolar calendars to stay synchronized with the seasons, which is crucial for agrarian societies. Because the Sun’s speed along the ecliptic varies depending on the Earth-Sun distance, the number of days that it takes the Sun to travel between each pair of solar terms varies slightly throughout the year. Each solar term is divided into three pentads, so there are 72 pentads in a year. Each pentad consists of five, rarely six, days, and are mostly named after phenological (biological or botanical) phenomena corresponding to the pentad.

Gyeonghoeru Pavilion

Gyeonghoeru Pavilion 24 Solar Terms

Geometric Analysis The rectangular shape of the Pavilion with its24 columns on the outer perimeter could be analyzed using geometric calculations. Assuming that the center of the Pavilion is the center of the universe (the sun), the measurements of the floor plans creates an ellipse which the measurements of the orbit directly corresponds with the Earth orbit around the sun.

24 Solar Term Section Section of the 24 Solar Term. The above image refers to the actual Earth’s orbit around the sun and the points refer to each point of the 24 solar terms which are spreaded with equal distance of 15 degrees. This diagram can simply be transferred into a section. When the points are plotted on a section, the graph appears to be in the shape of infinity, or Ying Yang.

Infinity The Points of each columns represent Infinity or “Ying-Yang”. The Points or the column’s exact location in the graph is re-plotted. Immediately the plan of the Pavilion correlates to the graph of the Earth’s orbit. I believe the architecture of the Pavilion captured the essence of what it means of Cosmic order.
