William Harmsworth (william1250@b nternet.com) It is extremely pleasing to see more Districts and Clubs suppor ng and ge ng involved organising and running TT events. These events play a vital opportunity to show schools, businesses and other agencies Technology Tournament Steering Group Chairman - Tony Jordan what Rotary is doing for young people in s mula ng the interest in science, technology, engineering and maths. We are able to recommend CREST Discovery Award accredita on for students successfully par cipa ng at a TT event has been very well received and is proving to be an added incen ve for schools to engage with their local TT event. RIBI's TT is being promoted in schools by the network of CREST Coordinators. In D1160 a very successful TT event was held at Stormont Parliament Building, with eighteen teams par cipa ng. It was a wonderful showcase opportunity for Rotary and what we are able to offer young people to s mulate their interest in this subject. Following the success of showcasing TT at the Big Bang event last March at the NEC, we have been invited to exhibit again in March 2015. We have also have a ended a number of Regional Big Bang events that are held around the country. Rotary Youth Service working in the community - Rotary Club of Sidcup Youth Unemployment Project The challenge - November 2014, the unemployment rate for the 18-24 yr old age group in the UK was hovering a shade under 15% so around one in seven is unemployed. These youngsters should be our country's future. Right now far too many have a big black cloud hanging over their futures and are ge ng precious li le help. What did we do - Our Voca onal and Youth Opportuni es Commi ee set out to do something about it in our local area. We took the bull by the horns and approached our local Bexleyheath Job Centre Plus, found we were pushing on an open door and were welcomed with open arms. A frui ul rela onship rapidly developed and in short order regular group mentoring sessions were set up for the 18-24 yr olds, mostly those unemployed for more than 13 weeks, with group sizes ranging from 8-15 and a team of three from Rotary.
What has happened - Our target is to improve their employability by firstly boos ng their dented morale and self belief, rekindling enthusiasm and - SO importantly - focussing them on the basics of what employers want and need to see. Understanding how an employer thinks - and an awful lot more. All of this takes about an hour a er which we go through their CVs and aspira ons with them on a one-to-one basis giving guidance where we can which takes another hour or so. Results - IT WORKS and our Job Centre are very pleased with the results. Several other clubs in 1120 have joined the project and are underway with their Job Centres or moving in that direc on. The job we do truly fulfils Rotary Voca onal aims, showcases what Rotary can do and demonstrates to the community what Rotary is really there for by giving a helping hand where it is so badly needed. None of what we do is rocket science – it is the applica on of the experience so plen ful in Rotary coupled with down to earth common sense and a willingness to help others. It is u erly do-able - all it needs is YOU. If your club would like to join in to tackle youth unemployment in your area then get in touch with Erik Foster on email sunnysidcup1@waitrose.com or call on 0208 300 2091. He is happy to send a complete 'starter pack', talk to clubs where feasible and to get our Job Centre to talk and recommend to yours. Aspira onal for them – definitely inspira onal for us!
