Student Work - Centro de Artesanato The project has investigated an historic district of Lisbon which was chosen during a visit to the city in October 2016. Research into the city and the site’s history has revealed clues about how the place has evolved. Lisbon has a rich cultural heritage and a living tradition of craftsmanship reflecting a constant tradition between old and new, between tradition and modernity. This concept drove the programme behind my proposal. The existing site encompasses a collection of ruins that once formed part of a palatial complex. It is topographically complex and split over a number of different levels, the highest of which is used as a viewing platform with spectacular views out to the Tagus River. The proposed scheme capitalises on the site’s elevated location, with a roof garden that provides a tranquil location from which to enjoy the views. The scheme also provides workshops, exhibition spaces, a library and courtyards for its users. The existing ruins have been retained where possible, and incorporated into the new scheme; a volumetric design strategy has been pursued in response to the complex topography; and a structural and material approach that reconciles the existing ruins with the new proposal has been developed.

Workshop - The Street
An internalised street that serves both as circulation and as a communal work space. With aspirations to create a sociable and collaborative place to work, this layout provides opportunities for creative practitioners to learn new skills and work with others. It also allows visitors of the institution to see the craftspeople at work.

The Courtyard
A space that is at once connected to all parts of the building; a reminder of the site’s past; a mixing chamber for the site’s occupants. Here, there is an awareness of people moving around the building across a number of levels. A new space for the people of Lisbon and for tourists, alike.
