Studio 2 is the largest and most significant of Edgar Miller and Sol Kogen’s Carl Street Studios, tucked behind a gated courtyard in historic Old Town. One of fifteen condos converted in 1927 from a Victorian home and coach house that was built in 1874. Studio 2 was painstakingly modernized for today’s lifestyle in 2004,
The devoted owners preserved the decorative embellishments including mosaic and stained glass windows, Art Deco tiles, carved doors, plaster frescoes, parquet floors, terra-cotta animals, and carved and painted ceilings. Today, the exceptional 3,600 square foot studio, with a dramatic two-story living room, features a high-end kitchen and breakfast room, a spacious dining area, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a powder room, a second floor family room, and a large private deck.
Edgar Miller and Sol Kogen, classmates at the School of the Art Institute, formed an informal but renowned partnership when they purchased the Victorian home on two lots at 155 West Carl Street in 1927. Kogen served as the contractor, hiring laborers and purchasing materials at the right price, or preferably salvaging supplies from wrecking sites. Miller designed the studios, although no drawings or plans are known to exist. The rooms evolved one by one through Miller’s creative vision.
The staircase to the private roof-top deck features custom stained glass windows signed by Edgar Miller. The deck is outfitted with electric and a water system with sprinklers. The unfinished area of the deck is also attached to this unit but requires an infrastructure to make it weight-bearing. The owner is responsible for the roof ’s repairs and improvements.

T h e A rt o f C r a f t s m e n E d g a r M i l l e r a n d J e s u s T o r r e s Jesus Torres was Edgar Miller’s assistant and successor at Carl Street. He left Mexico with his wife in 1924, and, after working in Texas and Minnesota, he settled in Chicago and studied at Hull House, excelling in pottery, woodcarving, and metalwork. Miller also attended many Hull House activities at that time, and many believe that it is there that the two artists met.
The staircase, thought to be Torres’ finest work, reflect his preference for bold, colorful design and the elements of Art Deco style. Torres also designed the bathrooms in Studio 2, and, in the 1940s, added the sideboard with surrounding tile work in the dining room, the same space as the original reimagined Victorian home. True to his life-long love of horses, Miller, at eight-nine, spent ten intense days designing the doors to the master bedroom. Without a sketch, the intricate details and beautiful animals evolved from random splotches.
