Switzerland is known for its flag that is embellished with white cross and red backdrop. Its meaning is derived from religious belief. The white cross symbolizes Jesus' crucifixion while the red background signifies Jesus' blood. It is a country filled with interesting history and people. A popular destination for the rich and famous, Switzerland is country with so much to offer for a visitor to explore. Learn more about this country by reading the information below. History Helveti, a group of Celtic people populated Switzerland in 500 BC. However, Romans conquered the area and Romanized Switzerland many centuries afterwards. Romans erected buildings, roads, cities, and towns. But the Alemanii tribe invaded the country and snatched it from the grips of the Romans in 400 AD. By the 5th century, Alemans, Burgundians, and Lombards inhabited Switzerland. But during Charlemagne's reign in France in the 9th century, the Franks ruled most of Europe including Switzerland. Charlemagne's descendants split the empire among themselves and Switzerland went to the family of Austrian Habsburg in the 13th century. During the 13th century, the commerce and trade were very successful and it made way for new towns to be established. In 1921, a move to overthrow the Habsburgs from Switzerland was made by an alliance of cantons, Uri, and Unterwalden. They were the core of modern Switzerland. It then became a very strong country. The Habsburgs were finally defeated in 1315. Later, many tribes joined in and the remaining armies of Habsburgs were defeated in 1386 and 1388. During the 15th and 16th century, 13 cantons populated Switzerland, fortifying the nation to whole new level. The reputation of Swiss soldiers spread across Europe and this prompted Pope Julius II to create bodyguards that were from the Swiss army. They are known until today as Swiss Guard. But the mighty nation fell in 1515 in the hands of the Venetians and French at the battle of Marignano. After that, Switzerland implemented a neutral policy.


The Reformation that swept Europe in the 16th century also affected Switzerland. Many Swiss, especially in the urban areas converted to Protestantism but the poorer citizens remained committed to Catholicism. The 17th century saw the great progress of this country. It took a neutral stand during the Thirty Years War and in 1848, Switzerland gained an independent status. It prospered economically in the 18th century, prompted by the arrival of Huguenots. The textile, clock, and watch industry thrived greatly.

But in 1798, Napoleon seized Switzerland. The 13 cantons were driven out and the Helvetic Republic took their place. But it was not long before the cantons gained their place again. In the 19th century, the Catholics were divided and it resulted in a civil war. The war ended with the union established by Catholic cantons abolished. The economy in Switzerland took a better turn in the late 19th century. Tourism and commercial industry flourished. It remained its neutral position during the World War II, although, it was later revealed that they escrowed gold from the Nazis. Switzerland became a UN member in 2002 and today, over 7 million Swiss enjoyed the prosperity of their country. Main Tourist Attractions

Pilatus would be a popular route to Lucerne. Visiting Ticino would feel like you are being transported into another country. The lake side resorts located in Lugano and Lucarno are reminiscent of Mediterranean sights and atmosphere. Culture The culture of Switzerland was not a strong aspect in the past. It was more known for its pristine environment, highly disciplined citizens, and their respect to nature. But in modern times, their devotion to world peace attracts many artistic individuals to craft their arts in this safe haven. This country became the refuge of famous people like Thomas Mann and Herman Hesse during the era of fascism.


German, French, and the Italian people have contributed to the evolution of Swiss culture. The Swiss are very fond of folk music and dance. The Schuhplattler, for instance, is made of a lively tune and accompanied by a lot of hopping and jumping. Visitors and locals alike all seek to perform winter sports because of Switzerland hosts a number of mountain and lake resorts. Skiing and mountaineering are very popular at this side of the globe and so is Schwingen, their version of wrestling.
