GUIDE

A DAY O N JA M E S ST R E E T Soak it all up with this curated itinerary AM

PM

Start the day surrounded by a canopy of foliage in the courtyard at Harveys Bar + Bistro, lovingly referred to as Harveys (p26). Alongside a milieu of local professionals and early risers, opt for the ever-popular poached eggs with tomato chutney and all of the sides, teamed with an espresso.

The long lunch begins at Bucci (p60). Order from the Vacation Series – a threecourse fixed-price lunch menu that’s updated monthly, and enjoy regional Italian flavours and wine. Saluti! There’s only one way to end a long Italian lunch, and that’s with coffee. Amble to Living Edge to pick up a design magazine (p170), and then make your way to local institution Jamie’s Espresso Bar for a chat with the barista (or Jamie himself), followed by a spot of reading with your shot of coffee.

Nearby, Jardan (p164) will ease you into the relaxed vibe of the precinct with its cosy showroom that’s comparable to a stylish friend’s home. Settle in to the homely surrounds and peruse the impressive range of books, jewellery and handcrafted homewares.

Before the sun dips below the fig trees, treat your feet with a stop at The Thai Foot Spa (p144). The treatments are indulgent and will leave you feeling ready for the night ahead.

By now the coffee has likely kicked in and it’s time to discover the cerebral contemporary art on display at nearby gallery TWFINEART (p172). If the coffee hasn’t worked its trick, then the vivid contemporary work on display in this high-impact space will.

As twilight sets in, follow the fairy lights up James Lane to At Sixes and Sevens (or simply ‘Sixes’ to those in the know) for an icy drink with the locals (p34), before settling in for an evening of adventurous feasting at hatted restaurant Gerard’s Bistro (p20).

Next up, shop for wearable art at Dinosaur Designs (p108). Each collection of jewellery and homewares is hand sculpted in Sydney, meaning no two pieces are alike – a word of warning, this could derail your itinerary.

And if leaving the street seems arduous, a stay at Sage Hotel will leave you perfectly placed to do it all – and more – again (p178).

RECIPE

THE DELIGHTFUL TURK The owners of Gerard’s Bar share one of their favourite tipples

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

30ml vodka

STEP 1 Muddle watermelon cubes and strain to produce a fine juice.

7.5ml crème de cacao 7.5ml Campari 30ml watermelon juice (approximately 8 cubes) 5ml sumac gomme 10ml rosewater 10ml lemon juice

STEP 4 Pour the cocktail into a tall glass filled with crushed ice. STEP 5 Garnish with rose petals or a mint sprig.

STEP 2 Measure all of the ingredients and pour them into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.

Rose petals or mint sprig (optional)

STEP 3 Shake vigorously to produce a foam.

This refreshing cocktail was inspired by the vibrant flavours of sister establishment Gerard’s Bistro. Having been on the menu since day one, it’s become a crowd favourite. When making the sumac gomme, add a pinch of sumac a little at a time to the syrup and taste – you might want a bit of spice, but not too much.

RECIPE

O R A N G E + W H I T E C H O C O L AT E MOUSSE A simple, crowd-pleasing dessert from James St Cooking School

whisk briskly over a low temperature, as per custard.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

40g sugar (divided into 2 x

STEP 1 Prepare your ingredients. Soak the gelatine leaves in cold water, zest the skin of the orange or mandarin, and cut the white chocolate into small pieces. Then set each one aside for later.

STEP 4 Add the gelatine leaves, chocolate and zest to the hot custard mixture. Stir to melt the chocolate and then allow it to cool to room temperature.

STEP 2 Whisk together the egg yolks with one portion of the sugar.

STEP 5 Softly whip the cream and fold it through the mixture.

STEP 3 Meanwhile, bring the cream and the second portion of sugar to the boil, then add the egg yolk mixture and

STEP 6 Allow the mousse to set in the fridge overnight, or for at least four hours if time is limited.

20g portions) 100ml cream 2 egg yolks 1 orange or mandarin 90g white chocolate 2 gelatine leaves 250ml thickened cream

Though this dessert can be enjoyed on its own, it’s a refreshing accompaniment for pastry and delicate tuile biscuits. Alternatively, serve with fresh raspberries for a sharp contrast to the soft creamy texture and sweetness of the white chocolate. In both instances, the simplest way to serve is to allow the mousse to set in a piping bag.

S A M C R A N STO U N Artist Just one week into his art degree in 2007, Sam Cranstoun was announced as a finalist in the Archibald Prize and dubbed an ‘enfant terrible’ by the likes of author Thomas Keneally. A decade on, Cranstoun’s unabated creative journey into philosophy, history and human nature has made him one of our favourite local artists. Can you briefly explain your art practice?

and narratives are told and how that can often be an imperfect process. I remember as a kid seeing a photo of Malcolm X and finding it a little bit jarring because my image of Malcolm X had been Denzel Washington playing him in the Spike Lee movie. So I’m really interested in how these processes and translations can help but also hinder our understanding of history.

My art practice centres on an interest in history; how history is told and how we, as viewers or spectators, use things like imagery and mass media to understand it. My work uses different forms of research, both highbrow and lowbrow, to make anything from drawings, paintings to video sculpture and installation.

Where do you find inspiration on James Street? You work across a number of different mediums. Why is that approach important to your work?

The architecture and landscaping of the precinct has always resonated with me. I’ve worked with plants a lot as well as architecture, and I think about the social and historical implications of architecture. And so for me, there is a really interesting mix of all of those elements architecturally on James Street.

It has always been an instinctive thing. I like the freedom of being able to research something, to look into the story of a person or an event, and then that process determines the physical outcomes of the work.

JAC K W I L S O N STO N E Urban Apiarist In an effort to bolster the local bee population, Bee One Third’s founder and urban apiarist Jack Wilson Stone maintains beehives on rooftops across the region. He is a regular around James Street, checking on rooftop hives and harvesting the honey made by our pollen-loving friends. How is Brisbane’s bee population going?

What’s one thing we can all do to help bees?

Brisbane bees are thriving, and we are noticing more gardens popping up that are bee-friendly. It has been really rewarding to see the varieties of honey come in that the bees have collected, and that is a direct representation of what people are planting in their gardens.

Purchase honey from your local area and buy seasonal fruit and vegetables that are Australian grown. How is the honey in James Street different from other areas in Brisbane? The honey changes from location to location and from season to season, so you have this beautiful irregularity with the product. The honey from James Street is a direct representation of what’s in flower and what is in season at that time of year.

Are you seeing more awareness about the plight of bees? Definitely and this is raising a discussion around the treatment of bees and the unfortunate industrialisation of what was a very humble, calming pastime.

What is your favourite way to eat honey?

What is so calming and humble about beekeeping as a pastime?

A slab of fresh honeycomb from the beehive slathered over warm crumpets, with really nice salted butter.

You are forced to slow down and put thought into the process at hand, which is what a lot of people find comforting about keeping bees – that forced sense of calm.

M I C H A E L + CA L M A LO U F Placemakers Since opening the James St Market in 2002, brothers Michael and Cal Malouf have been a vital part of James Street’s evolution. For their next project, they are set to open The Calile – an urban resort named in honour of their family’s legacy. What key factors influenced your decision to develop an urban resort on James Street?

As one of the original James Street placemakers, how do you think The Calile will evolve the way visitors experience the precinct?

A quality hotel for James Street seemed to be a logical addition to the precinct. Our vision wasn’t for a dark and moody hotel experience, where guests are housed in an air-conditioned bubble. We wanted to immerse travellers in Brisbane’s sub-tropical climate, so we chose to develop a resort-style hotel in an urban context – something unique and hopefully memorable for our guests.

The hotel brings with it a range of food and beverage options, including an elegant lobby bar. Hotels are great social hubs and the best hotels provide special spaces where visitors and locals can interact in a fun, social setting. The Calile is also a destination for locals, with multiple new retailers and venues opening.Who can we expect to see joining James Street?

The name, The Calile (pronounced kal-isle), is tied to your family and heritage. Can you explain its story?

We’re proud to have several leading fashion icons opening flagship boutiques for Brisbane. The pool deck on level one will welcome an iconic poolside restaurant together with a wellness spa and fitness centre. We’re also pretty excited about the additional 230 basement car parks.

In 1892 our great-grandfather Calile Malouf landed in Australia and since that time the name Calile has been extensively adopted by our family. In homage to our great-grandfather, we hope The Calile will become an enduring piece of Brisbane’s social fabric.
