‘American Pickers’ coming to N.C. Do you have an old barn, shed or just too much old stuff in your house that is stuffed full of, well, stuff? Could the items stored in these places be valuable antiques? If so, two guys named Mike and Frank might want to come see you. The popular “American Pickers” program on the History Channel will be filming in the Carolinas in March and representatives are looking for places for Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz to pick. “We’re looking for leads throughout the state, specifically interesting characters with inter-

esting items and lots of them,” said Maggie Kissinger, associate producer. “We would love to spread the word in your area. The way we find people and collections for our show is through spreading the word far and wide so that people know we’re coming to town. “We understand that with the proliferation of Covid-19, we are all facing very uncertain times and everything is changing daily. We at ‘American Pickers’ are taking this pandemic very seriously and will be adjusting our schedule accordingly for the safety of those who appear on our show and our crew. We won’t pick unless everybody is safe, so if we cannot make those dates, nobody’s time is wasted, as we will re-schedule

to a date when conditions allow filming. “However, we are excited to continue to reach the many collectors in your area to discuss their years of picking.” These self-described modern archaeologists travel the country looking for what they call “rusty gold,” anything from small toys to vehicles, especially motorcycles. Regular viewers of the show know the pair’s love of petroliana, anything related to gas and oil production, like oil cans or gasoline pumps. The pickers usually sell items they Find in one of their two Antique Archeology stores (Le SEE PICkERS, PAGe 2

Rotary members rename tournament Bow Stafford Memorial Golf Classic By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com Major events always take time to plan and the Jamestown Rotary Golf Tournament is no exception. That is why members of the local Rotary Club have already started preparing for the fall golf tournament that serves as a fundraiser for the group, enabling them to help others in the community. “We have held the tournament for three years and each year was more successful than the last,” said member Martin Senell. “But we want to increase the recognition of the event and the income we make from it so it could benefit more people.” Members decided to rename the tournament after someone whose name would be recognized by many in the greater Jamestown area. The official name of the tournament will now be the Bow Stafford Memorial Golf Classic. Bow Stafford, who passed away in 1997, was a charter member of the Jamestown Rotary Club. He was also a prominent member of the Jamestown community. He was an active member of the Jamestown United Methodist Church where he enjoyed participating in the church choir. He also played the mandolin and was an integral part of the Jamestown Fun Band. As a realtor, he was involved in land development

It is hoped that vaccinations will help ease the pandemic and the Jamestown Public Library and its Corner Book Shop will soon be able to resume normal operations. More information about the library’s reopening will be available in the future. Meanwhile the library staff is offering curbside service to their patrons. To place items on hold, call the library at 336-454-4815 or go to the library’s catalog on its website at Jamestownpubliclibrary.com. You will be contacted when your items are available so you can schedule a time for pickup.

of thousands of acres in and around Jamestown. His knowledge of and love for the community gained him the unofficial title of “Mr. Jamestown.” “Bow loved people,” said longtime friend Dr. A.P. Fortney in a eulogy at Stafford’s funeral. “He loved people because he had a good heart and he had a good heart because he had God in his heart.”

what he loved, caring for patients, teaching medical students, and mentoring new doctors. He summed it up, “I believe my patients are my responsibility. They need a generalist to follow them through life, and that’s me. Having a primary care champion is the best medicine.” One of his friends remembered that whenever he drove through Chapel Hill, he “would see Jim taking someone’s pulse, giving solace to patients on the Franklin Street sidewalk. It was clear to me, early on, that Jim was a role model who was born to take care of people.” Bryan took a special interest in providing support and care for people approaching the end of life. He was a founder and longtime active supporter of hospice in North Carolina. UNC’s medical school established a fund in his honor to help finance construction of a UNC hospice inpatient facility in Chatham County. Bryan was never ready to give up his

The City of High Point’s policy document on proposed use along the city’s portion of the Jamestown Bypass is just that, a policy document. Not a fixed plan. So said Heidi Galanti, planning administrator for the Planning and Development Department for the City of High Point, as she hosted a virtual meeting Jan. 12 on High Point’s Jamestown Bypass Land Use Assessment program. “[The area] will be studied later,” Galanti said in response to a viewer question about how development will help or hurt existing Deep River water levels. Galanti began the meeting with a PowerPoint presentation outlining eight areas of study, with the final two areas of most concern for Jamestown residents as they abut the town limits. The City of High Point is looking for residential development in Areas 7 and 8. Karen Small, who lives on Bales Chapel Road and whose family is one of the two largest landowners in Area 8, is an opponent of the medium-density proposal for Areas 7 and 8, an area of approximately 132 acres along Dillon and Bales Chapel roads currently zoned low-density. “They call it medium density, but to us it’s high-density,” Small said, pointing to the area’s current rural setting. One of the goals of High Point’s Land Use Plan is “Ensure that development respects the natural environment.” Bringing medium- to high-density development would destroy the natural environment. Galanti said the City would look at it again.

There is already a 76-unit residential development going up on Bales Chapel Road, next to Bales Memorial Wesleyan Church. An available area twice that size on Dillon Road could bring another 152 units if sold. This policy document does not force residents to sell their property but did suggest a developer might be interested in purchasing the land. Some residents of Areas 7 and 8 were concerned with possible annexation by High Point. Galanti said there would be no annexation until a developer requested it. Since there are no water or sewer connections in these two areas, annexation would be required for residents to receive these connections. Small said her family has been approached for annexation in the past but believes that if 60 percent of the residents do not want it the area would not be annexed. Galanti added that single small pieces of property would not be annexed on its own. Rather, annexation must be a large, contiguous group of properties. The “Jamestown Land Use Assessment Document” issued by the City of High Point is available at www. highpointnc.gov/landuseassessments.

“We thought naming the golf tournament after Bow was a good way to honor his memory and give people who never met him an opportunity to get to know him,” Senell said. For the fourth annual golf tournament to be successful, the Rotary Club is seeking a title sponsor for the event. Members also hope to recruit gold and silver sponsors, as well as hole sponsors. Of course, the event needs teams to play the game. For the Captain’s Choice play, golfers will have the opportunity to win cash prizes. “We hope to have registration forms available within the next month,” said Jerry Brett, tournament chair. “Our goal is to develop a website for our club and use it as a way to promote the golf tournament, which is scheduled for Sept. 10 at Jamestown Park. The rain date is Sept. 17.” The Bow Stafford Memorial Golf Classic joins the Rotary Club’s other major fundraiser, a horse show held the first Saturday in October for approximately 59 years. Proceeds from the fundraisers have been used to support numerous charities, including Feeding Lisa’s Kids. Teaching by example was always Bryan’s strength. Even as he discontinued treatment for the cancer that was taking his life, he showed us that, with courage, life could still be rich. On December 27, just days before his death, he and his wife Betsy read a poem as a part of the regular service at Chapel Hill’s University Presbyterian Church. The poem, “Mysteries, Yes” by Mary Oliver, begins with “Truly, we live with mysteries too marvelous to be understood.” It concludes with words that could have been written by Dr. Bryan: “Let me keep company always with those who say, ‘Look!’ and laugh in astonishment, and bow their heads.”

continued from front patient and people centered life. He served as a volunteer physician at a medical clinic for the uninsured. He continued his interest in end-of-life care and advocating for doctors to be servant centered. One of his students, Paul Chelminski, remembered hearing a story that illustrated Bryan’s approach. When asked what he was doing as he went into a clinic to see patients, Bryan said “I’m just going to fold socks.” Chelminski said that was just Bryan’s modest way of explaining his approach to patient care. “It was the work of a servant—humble, necessary and of fundamental importance—it was done simply.”
