Looking back: Old drug store was heart of the town By Carol BrooKs freeLAnce Writer cab1hp@gmail.com

Long before there was a Walgreen’s Drug on West Main Street, there was the Jamestown Drug Store, run by pharmacist John Tilley. As most pharmacists were called at the time, he was known as “Doc Tilley.” Got an ache or pain? Go see Doc Tilley. Need an umbrella or greeting card. Doc Tilley. Need a sleeve of straight pins, or a fountain pen? Again, Doc. The store, located where Full Moon Oyster Bar and Other Side of the Moon Brewery is today, was a gathering place for the town of Jamestown. Residents could easily walk there while downtown shopping and kids were attracted to the soda fountain after school. Neighbors and business owners met there to learn the latest town news. Gordon Dillon, who reported on old Jamestown for several years in the James-

town News, learned that William Harris began the store in the late 1940s. Harris owned Ring-Harris Drugs in High Pont. Dr. Hampton Chiles had a small office next door, on the High Point side, making it convenient to walk to the drug store next door to have prescriptions filled. A Mr. Bates worked days and Jim Brooks (this writer’s father) and Ralph Teague, who worked at the High Point store, assisted Harris in the evenings. Tilley and his brother Ernest purchased the store from Harris in early 1950, with John buying out his brother’s interest two years later. A staple of every old drug store was the soda fountain, with the “soda jerks” serving ice cream cones, sundaes, milk shakes and Cokes. “And Cherry Smash,” recalled Nancy Submitted Photo Hubbard several years ago of the drink locals sat on benches in front of the drug store (right) or the cleaners (left). the made with a hefty squirt of cherry syrup Jamestown Post office was located between the two businesses in this photo from the 1950s. full Moon oyster Bar and the other side of the Moon Brewery see store, PAGe 2 occupy the spaces now.

Friends plan fundraiser for quadriplegic By norMa B. dennis freeLAnce Writer ndworddesign@gmail.com For David Dyson, swimming in a river in Ivanhoe, N.C., was nothing new. He had grown up doing it. Although the river was shallow, Dyson knew the skill of shallowwater diving and did it consistently and well. In August of 2017, while visiting family in Ivanhoe, a group decided to enjoy a trip to the river for a swim. His wife Katie watched him dive several times until the unthinkable happened – Dyson failed to come up from a dive.

When family pulled him to shore, he had no cuts or bruises, but because of sand in his hair and nose, they think he might have hit a sandbar. Dyson’s first comment was that he could not feel his legs. In fact, he had injured the C5 vertebra in his spine and was paralyzed from the midchest down. Dyson was airlifted to a hospital in Wilmington for surgery and spent six days there as he and Katie deliberated their next move. The couple, their two-year-old son and both their mothers opted to go to Shepherd Center in Atlanta where Dyson underwent approximately three months of intensive therapy.

“We could never have made it without our mothers to care for our son,” Katie said. “I had to be involved in David’s rehab and learn how to care for him.” When the Dysons returned to their home in Sedgefield, he continued therapy, putting in several hours a day on a regimen of rehabilitation. “Doctors have never said he won’t walk, but they have not said he will either,” Katie said. “If he never walks, David doesn’t want it to be due to him not trying. He has some movement in his wrists and we are thankful for that. Some people with see friends, PAGe 2

No decision was made Jan. 13 regarding Lori Herron’s appeal to the Jamestown Board Adjustment of the Town’s assessment of civil penalties. The penalties were for the continued keeping of swine on a residentially-zoned property. Since Herron had only retained the services of a litigation law firm, Bratcher Adams Folk, PLLC, of Cary, on Jan. 10, attorney Randy Herman requested a continuance until Feb. 4 to have time to review the case. Herman specializes in land use and commercial real estate transaction cases. The Board of Adjustment agreed to the continuance and, as a result, no other business was transacted. The meeting lasted approximately 12 minutes. Town Attorney Beth Koonce represented the town in this matter and the Town acquired the services of Amanda Hodierne, of Isaacson Sheridan, as legal counsel for the Board of Adjustment, which is a separate Town entity. Planning

Director Matthew Johnson said this was “to avoid any impropriety” on the Town’s part. The Town sent a Notice of Civil Penalties due for “Failure to Correct Zoning Violation” to Herron on Nov. 18. At the Jan. 13 public hearing, Herron was not permitted to appeal the original zoning violation regarding keeping of swine on her property that she received Feb. 27, 2019, from Johnson because the 30-day timeframe for filing an appeal had expired. She was allowed a maximum of an additional 60 days to remove the pigs, up to May 27, 2019. Herron pled her case to the Jamestown Planning Board on July 8, asking for a text amendment to the town’s Land Development Ordinance to allow her to keep her pigs. The Planning Board unanimously denied her request and sent it to the Town Council, which passed its own unanimous decision against the amendment on Aug. 20. Herron was given until Oct. 4 to remove the pigs, but has yet see hearing, PAGe 2

“Doc” Tilley was much loved by town Before chain drug stores became prevalent, and even before HMOs appeared, the local drug store was a convenient place to go for medical advice. Since it was usually nearby, you could stop in and ask the druggist, or pharmacist, what he recommended for your ailment, saving a visit to, or by, the doctor, if yours was still making house calls. This dispensing of medical advice led to the nickname of “Doc” for pharmacists. When “Doc” John Tilley bought out his brother’s interest in the Jamestown Drug Store in 1952, he

embarked on a life of service to the community that would last 20 more years. According to an area newspaper, Tilley was born Sept. 24, 1902, in Lenoir but grew up in Granite Falls. He studied pharmacy at the University of North Carolina, graduating in 1923. He moved to Winston-Salem where he opened his own store, then was called into the Navy, becoming the oldest man drafted in Forsyth County. Ethel Parrish of Winston-Salem became his bride in 1927. Tilley was responsible for bringing longtime local physician Dr. Austin Fortney to Jamestown in 1951. The two knew each other from City Hospital in

Winston-Salem. Anna Fortney, the doctor’s wife, also worked at City and had to visit the hospital pharmacy for patient medications. Anna Fortney once recalled that when Tilley learned his friend was planning to relocate back to this area from Georgia, he said, “Why don’t you come here?” Fortney opened his practice August 4, 1951, right beside the drug store. Fortney treated many celebrities who were staying at the old Sedgefield Inn (now the clubhouse), but buxom actress Jayne Mansfield was the most memorable. “John Tilley made such a see tilley, PAGe 2

and carbonated water. Her family lived nearby on Potter Drive. “Mama would pick us up at school – my brother and sister and I and probably a couple of our cousins – and she would take us to the drug store. “We had the best time in that drug store. We would stop and get cherry smash. They had the fountain drinks and little tables with chairs in the back. You could get a grilled cheese or grilled pimento cheese, but we just always got something to drink. “I remember he (Tilley) had a little box that had those little ice cream things in them – Dixie Cups with the wooden spoons. The fountain was on the side.” It was removed by the early 1970s. Burley Dennis once recalled umbrellas hanging from the ceiling, open and upside down. Tilley joked that the roof leaked, but they were really just for sale. Many an old drug store sold loose candy out of large glass containers and the Jamestown store was no exceptions. “He had Super Bubble, fireballs, Tootsie rolls and Tootsie pops, even Lance crackers,” recalled Nancy Fortney. Payment was often on the honor system if Tilley was in the back filling a prescription. Customers would just yell back that they were taking a Tootsie Roll and leave the money on the counter – or even come back the next day to pay if they didn’t have the money when the candy urge hit. “My sister Lou said that he must have given her $1,000 of Tootsie Rolls in her lifetime,” Fortney continued, “and I don’t think Daddy ever paid for them.” “Daddy” was long-time Jamestown physician Dr. Austin Fortney, who opened his office next door to the drug store after visiting his old friend, Tilley, replacing Dr. Chiles. Many long-time residents remember the intercom system between the doctor’s office and drug store. Tilley could have a new prescription ready by the time the patient arrived from Fortney’s office next door. Fortney’s daughter Nancy remembered sitting in the drug store late one night in her gown, bathrobe, and father’s smoking jacket, waiting while Tilley mixed up something for her ear infection. “Bill Ragsdale walks in, saw I was sick, and went back (to the fountain) to fix me a chocolate milk shake,” she said. “Daddy walks up and said, ‘If you’re going to fix her one, fix me one, and remember I want chocolate milk and chocolate ice cream.’” Bill Ragsdale didn’t work there – he just made himself at home, just like the many customers from the community. Many teenagers got their start working at the drug store, including Dillon, Ruddy Hassell, Charlie Roach, Donald Bane, Carroll Madison and the Lea boys. Teeny Welborn and Helen Newman assisted during the day. Students from the public school often visited the store – sometimes during class. Tilley once recalled two girls skipping class and hiding in the restroom at the drug store. When they came out, Principal Kenneth Miller was standing there waiting for them. The late Dot Perdue, who attended the public school, also remembered Miller and the store. “It was at a time (10th grade) when the boys could leave (the grounds) – the boys could smoke,” she recalled several years ago. “Me being who I am, went to Mr. Miller and got permission to go to the drug store for lunch. The boys could go but the girls couldn’t. And he gave it to me. Wouldn’t give it to any of the other girls.” The corner drug store where locals would gather is now just a memory, but Jamestown Drug Store and pharmacist John Tilley hold a large space in the memories of area residents. (See story on “Doc” Tilley in this issue.)

fuss about it for weeks and weeks after that,” the doctor once remembered. Always a man who cared for his neighbors, Tilley would open the store late at night to fill a prescription or provide an overthe-counter medication for those in need. He would even deliver to the homes of those too sick to come to the store. Some residents recall that he did not send a bill after the passing of a customer who had a lingering illness. He also charged less than the going rate for expensive drugs. “I remember Mr. Tilley as a very quiet man,” said Dot Perdue, who has since passed. “He was very small in stature and he just seemed to be the fatherly kind of person.” Many remember him as a “character,” gruff on the outside but a sweetheart inside. “He played tricks on

June 22 as John Tilley Day and honored him with a dinner that evening. Tilley passed away Dec. 3, 1976. Old-fashioned drug stores are a thing of the

Dyson’s injury has been difficult not only physically, but also mentally and financially. “We really need a house that is wheelchair assessable with room for all his therapy equipment,” Katie said. “All our bedrooms are upstairs and right now we are set up in our living room. We also hope to someday get a van that is modified for David to drive.” Friends have established a GoFundMe page to help

Currently, the penalties are “stayed” while the case is considered by the Board of Adjustment. However, if the Board decides against Herron’s appeal, she would begin to accrue penalties

which would continue to increase by $100 for each day the zoning violation continued. The Town did not assess penalties during the text amendment process. neither neocon nor Isolationist By riCh loWry Donald Trump isn’t George W. Bush. That should be obvious to everyone by now, but his critics and even some of his supporters immediately acted as if it were 2003 on the cusp of the Iraq War when Trump took out Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani. Suddenly, the neocons had cachet again (Vox warned that “the Iraq War hawks are back”), and we were about to launch yet another endless war. Trump’s decision to kill Soleimani, New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg wrote, repeating a common refrain, “has brought the United States to the brink of a devastating new conflict in the Middle East.” There’s no doubt that the operation against Soleimani carried risks, but it didn’t transform Trump into a conventional interventionist. In fact, taking out Soleimani was wholly consistent with the president’s approach to the world that can’t be plotted on a simple hawk/dove or neocon/isolationist axis. As a Jacksonian, Trump is none of the above, combining a willingness to whack our enemies with a distaste for ambitious foreign interventions. The Jacksonian label is the famous construction of foreign-policy analyst Walter Russell Mead, who traces the tradition back to Andrew Jackson and the cultural influence of the American backwoods. Jacksonians are content to let the world sort itself out, except if they perceive a threat, in which case they react with great ferocity. Trump’s victory overturned the reigning Republican foreign-policy consensus, but it didn’t herald a lurch to isolationism pure and simple. Even when Trump sounded most hostile to U.S. commitments and alliances abroad in 2016, he promised, in one of his most

Jacksonian sentiments, to “bomb the s---” out of ISIS. No matter how much Trump disdained being in the Middle East, it wouldn’t be possible to follow through on this threat without military assets, an intelligence network and allies on the ground. Once elected, Trump did, sure enough, bomb the s—- out of ISIS. Killing Soleimani is keeping with this general orientation rather than a departure from it. In fact, the whole thing is shot through with Jacksonian attitudes. Trump’s red line to Iran didn’t have to do with our values or shipping lanes. It reflected the most basic imperative of a nation protecting its own: Don’t harm Americans. When a rocket attack by an Iraniansupported militia killed an American contractor and injured other Americans at a base in Iraq, Trump’s response was also characteristically Jacksonian: a stunning, bolt-out-of-the-blue droning of an enemy commander who was thought to be safely out of bounds, designed to create the maximum deterrent bang for the buck. For his most loyal backers, the killing of Soleimani is likelier to add to the legend of Donald Trump instead of give them pause. In their view, here is President Trump once again doing what no other president would do, taking an inordinate amount of criticism for it, often from a perpetually hysterical press corps, and having it work out (so far). The Jacksonian impulse alone is not enough to solve the complex foreignpolicy problem presented by Iran. But it can be useful in a contest of intimidation and escalation. The killing of Soleimani isn’t a deep-state or neocon project, rather an unmistakable expression of Trump’s distinctive worldview. Fees can be high for rehoming pets By saM MaZZotta PAW’S corner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m very sad about this, but I need to find a new home for my two cats. I’m in my 70s and have some chronic health conditions that lately have gotten much worse. There is no one in my family who can take them, so I called the local shelter for help. They said they would take the cats, but I have to pay an $85 fee for each one. I can’t afford that. What can I do? — Deborah J., Portland, Oregon DEAR DEBORAH: I’m sorry to hear that you can’t keep your pets, but I understand it can be tough to take care of them when you’re trying to take care of your own health. Many shelters around the country take in pets as voluntary surrenders due to uncontrollable circumstances like per-

sonal medical problems. They charge what’s called a rehoming fee. It’s a onetime fee per pet ranging between $45 and $150, depending on the shelter, its location, available funding and other factors. The rehoming fee helps shelters cover the cost of food, housing and medical care for surrendered animals, which can be $85 a day or higher. In your case, it may be worth your while to contact the shelter again and explain your financial situation to a shelter manager, who might be able to work out a payment plan or a discounted fee.
