Many historic sites dot Jamestown landscape By CAROL BROOkS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com

You might expect to have historic old buildings in a town as old as Jamestown. Although it is not a large town (about three square miles with another six under its jurisdiction), Jamestown is an old town, having been settled in 1752. There’s a lot of history in this little village and seven buildings or areas are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The NRHP is the official list of locations in the United States that are deemed worthy of preservation. It was authorized under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 to support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate and

protect historic and archeological resources. Buildings, districts, sites, structures and objects significant to the country’s history are eligible for inclusion. Anyone can submit a nomination to the National Register. For more information, visit www.cr.np.gov/ nr. It’s important to note that Jamestown sites are located on both sides of Deep River, encompassing both the original settlement to the west, and the new settlement along the railroad to the east. Locations, like MuCulloch”s Gold Mill, the Gardner House and Oakdale Cotton Mill are not located on Main Street and several are just outside the town limits. Jamestown National Register sites, by date listed, are:

Richard Mendenhall Homeplace buildings – 1972 Located across the street from High Point City Lake Park, the buildings depict life of the Quakers in the “other South.” The original house, dating from 1811, and unique bank barn may have harbored slaves during their travel on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War, although there is no proof of this. Although not original to the homeplace, a false-bottom wagon on display in the barn is known to have been used on the Underground Railroad. Jamestown Historic District – 1973 This group of buildings within walking distance of each other, includes: • Mendenhall Homeplace.

a public intellectual steps down

One of North Carolina’s important public intellectuals has stepped down. What is a public intellectual and who stepped down? One definition of the word from Collins Dictionary By d.G. MARTIN is “an intellectual, ONe ON ONe often a noted specialist in a particular field, who has become well known to the general public for a willingness to comment on current affairs.” I think of a public intellectual as a smart someone who is an expert in an important field, such as history, economics, science, and health and who has earned the trust of the public. On the national scene, think of people like Jon Meacham, a writer of best-selling books about the presidency and American history. When he puts his history lessons to work explaining modern day political challenges, people listen. Similarly, North Carolina’s presidential historian William Leuchtenburg, who will celebrate his 100th birthday next year, is still writing and commenting on current issues. On health issues Dr. Antony Fauci uses his deep knowledge and experience in infectious SEE PUBLIC, PAGe 2

rindal accepts new position at ragsdale yMCa For Marlee Rindal, stepping into the role of executive director of the Mary Perry Ragsdale Family YMCA was natural. She knew the staff and most of its members and had already worked at the Y for 15 years, certainly long enough to know how it was run. Rindal began working at the Ragsdale Y part time in 2005 and by 2009 had taken on her position as wellness director full time. When the former executive director Kevin Bottomley resigned in March of 2020 to take a teaching job as an assistant professor at Indiana Tech University, Rindal agreed to serve as interim executive director. In the fall, she accepted the job as a permanent position. “I had worked in lots of other fitness areas through military and pri-

vate gyms,” Rindal said. “But my work at the Ragsdale Y was my first experience with a non-profit. The Y is more than a gym. It is much more service oriented.” The mission statement of the YMCA of Greensboro, of which the Ragsdale Y is a part, states its goal is to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. However, Covid-19 provided its own set of challenges to Rindal as she began her work as executive director. Her job has not only been to met the goals addressed in the Y’s mission statement, but to provide programs that help the community while keeping participants and staff at the Y as safe as possible. “The needs today may be different than those of the past,” Rindal said. “I plan to meet with staff from Guilford Technical Community College

(who donated the land on which the Y was built), the mayor of Jamestown, local business representatives and church leaders to determine how the Y can best serve the community at this time.” Rindal hopes to continue basic outreach programs that have been longstanding at the Y – such as blood drives, food drives and providing school supplies to students in need. “As vaccines become available for Covid, I will volunteer the use of our building as a site where they can be given,” Rindal said. “That may not happen, but we just want to be available if needed.” Currently, temperature checks, wearing masks and social distancing are allowing the Y to continue it Photo submitted mission. diseases to explain to the political leadership and a national audience the complexities of how the coronavirus works. Similarly, North Carolina’s secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services Mandy Cohen brings earned authority to the public when she explains the science that drives controversial, restrictive, and unpopular governmental actions to respond to the coronavirous threat. While I know of no widely accepted definition of public intellectual, there are some common themes that others use to describe such people: wellknown, intelligent, and learned people whose writings are recognized not only by academics but also non-academics and members of society. A technical writing business, Untold Content, offers this definition: “We define public intellectuals as individuals in pursuit of knowledge-making and knowledge-sharing–those with an irrepressible belief in the importance of fact-finding, researching, sharing insights, and hearing diverse perspectives of both decision-makers and those impacted by them.” This definition fits Ferrel Guillory,

who retired December 31 as professor and director of the Program on Public Life at UNC-Chapel Hill’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media after 23 years of distinguished service. A native of Louisiana and a graduate of the Columbia School of Journalism, he came to North Carolina to join the News & Observer in 1972. First as chief capitol correspondent and then for more than 20 years as a reporter, chief of the paper’s Washington bureau, and as a columnist, he sought to understand and explain the needs of the state and region and the roadblocks to meeting those needs. In 1995 he took a leave from the N&O to work with MDC, an organization founded in the 1960s to expand opportunity in the region. There he developed and wrote an annual publication, “The State of the South,” a comprehensive review of the challenges facing the region and possible responses. In 1997 he joined the journalism school faculty and quickly began to use his connections to bring together journalists, political and community leaders, and decision makers together with students and faculty. He made

sure they learned from each other and faced the hard facts about the state’s and region’s needs. He focused on education and workforce training, but he shared with all his storehouse of insider political wisdom. He helped organize non-profits such as the N. C. Center for Public Policy Research and its affiliate EducationNC to provide continuing attention to the state’s and region’s challenges. His friend and colleague, Gerry Hancock, paid tribute to Guillory, “For decades, in addition to his formal job at the moment, Ferrel provided quiet and generous counsel to governors, legislators, journalists, students, aspiring leaders, and countless others on the major challenges facing our state and our people.” As Guillory steps down from his university position, we can hope he will step up again to continue his service as one of our most important public intellectuals.

The house is notable for an unusual arched double chimney style. Stephen Gardner was an early settler of the Jamestown area and received a land grant in 1779. The Wiley family purchased it in 1856 and descendents still own it. The house is located on Grandover Parkway (formerly Wiley-Davis Road). Ragsdale Farm (Magnolia Farm) – 1991 The Colonial Revival home on East Main Street has been in the Ragsdale family since Joseph Sinclair Ragsdale built it in 1865. It was originally a six-room farmhouse before being expanded in 1880, 1902 and 1940. The 38 acres include what was perhaps Guilford County’s first post office, cottages, terraced gardens and a riding academy. Although not within the town limits, Deep River Friends Meeting House and Cemetery (listed 1995) are also listed on the National Register and the cemetery is the final resting place of many former Jamestown citizens.

the community room after her would be appropriate,” Rindal said. “In the future it will be known as the Kimberly Whitt McKone Community and Family Life Center. “Terry Matthews and Nancy Sherrill designed a plaque to commemorate the room in Kim’s memory. When the threat of Covid has lessened and we can have bigger gatherings, we will have an official dedication of the room.” An endowment fund through the YMCA of Greensboro also has been established to recognize McKone’s love for children and family. It will provide a yearly scholarship at the Mary Perry Ragsdale Family YMCA to a child or family in the Jamestown community, giving recipients the opportunity

to enjoy the benefits of the YMCA in McKone’s memory. “Kim had a passion to create opportunities for all and we think that is what this endowment will do,” Rindal said. “Her husband Mark and son Matthew appreciate what is being done to honor her.” The goal for the endowment is $20,000, which would ensure a $1,000 scholarship for the next 20 years. Every dollar raised will be used for scholarships to the Ragsdale Family Y. Checks should be made payable to the YMCA of Greensboro Endowment, with the memo designated for the Kim McKone Endowment and mailed to 620 Green Valley Road, Suite 210, Greensboro, NC 27408.

Couch Theatre By AMy ANdERSON New Year’s resolutions are a tool to set good intentions for the year ahead. For instance, one of mine: I resolve to spend more time lounging about on the couch watching movies (hey, it’s a pretty easy resolution to keep). If you need some resolution motivation, it’s never too late! Take a look at the four major themes below and draw some inspiration, then clip and save this column for late January, when you need some cinematic encouragement to carry on! Making Physical Changes Heavyweights features a bunch of kids sent away to weight-loss camp where the new director (Ben Stiller) is too over-the-top. Naturally, the kids stage a coup.

In GI Jane, the first female recruit (Demi Moore) for the Navy SEAL program gets incredibly tough — and incredibly buff. Take eggs beyond breakfast By ANGELA SHELF MEdEARIS tHe KItCHeN DIVA Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, and eggs are one of my favorite ingredients any time of the day! Eggs are a great way to start your day because they’re an almost perfect food. Whole eggs are nutritious and contain almost every nutrient you need to maintain good health, and they keep you feeling full between meals. One large egg has 13 essential vitamins and minerals, and protein, all for 70 calories. While egg whites contain some of the high-quality protein, riboflavin and selenium, most of an egg’s beneficial properties are found in the yolk. Here are some vitamins and nutrients: Vitamin D — critical for bone health and immune function. Eggs are one of the only foods that naturally contain vitamin D. Lutein and zeaxanthin — antioxidants that are believed to reduce the risk of developing cataracts and slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration, a disease that develops with age and is one of the leading causes of blindness in older adults. Choline — essential for normal functioning of all cells. Brain development and memory may be enhanced by the choline content of eggs, and the consumption of eggs is particularly important during pregnancy to support healthy brain development of the fetus. Eggs are not only good for your health, but also good for your wallet! This inexpensive ingredient can be used in a variety of dishes as a source of protein for breakfast, lunch or dinner. My Easy Supper Shakshuka is a popular dish with variations served in North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean. It’s also known as Eggs in Purgatory because of the spicy sauce the eggs are cooked in. This simple, versatile one-pan dish features eggs nestled in a flavorful tomato sauce enhanced with onions, garlic and spices, and sprinkled with Feta cheese. It can be served for breakfast or brunch right out of the pan with toast and breakfast sau-
