COMPILEd By NORMA B. dENNIS TWO LOCAL EDUCATORS NAMED TOPS IN THEIR FIELD Guilford County Schools announced educators of the year during several events at Western Middle School on Oct. 9. The recognitions replaced the annual GCS Celebration of Excellence. This year, for the first time, GCS named an Assistant Principal of the Year to complement its other awards. Angela Monell of Southwest Guilford High School was given the inaugural honor. “Dr. Monell is well-respected in our school building,” said Principal Mike Hettenbach. “As a school administrator, she is approachable, trusted, willing to have critical conversations and ready to get back to the business of students.” Jennifer Gibson of Millis Road Elementary School was named Mentor Teacher of the Year. “Having the opportunity to have Mrs. Gibson as my mentor has allowed me to see the most important qualities an educator and leader should possess,” said Gibson’s mentee, as shared by Jennifer Cooper, Millis Road principal. “Mrs. Gibson is dedicated to assuring that each student has an equal opportunity to learn and grow and to see their fullest potential. Her students know that when they walk into her classroom they are loved, cared for and accepted for who they are.” Erik Naglee, principal of Page Hgh School, was named GCS Principal of the Year. Naglee was also named the Secondary Principal of the Year. Johnita Readus, principal at Bluford-Peeler Elementary, was named the Elementary Principal of the Year. Autographs bring memories and fun By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com

When Ruth Bader Ginsberg died Sept. 18, her life brought fond memories to many people. Jamestown’s Jim Lutzweiler was one of them because he has her autograph. Lutzweiler guesses he has been a collector since around 1955. “Why did I start? Because in 1955 baseball was everything to a kid,” Lutzweiler said. “Getting the autograph of somebody who actually played the game was a big thing. Their simulated autographs appeared on baseball bats, baseball cards, and baseball gloves. I guess it sort of self-suggested it to me. “I went to a Cubs game at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The Cubs were playing the

Pirates that day. The most memorable [autograph] is of now Hall-of-Famer Roberto Clemente. He smiled at me, took his time and was as graceful as you could imagine to a little leaguer he would never see again in his all-too-short life.” Lutzweiler was able to get many of the autographs in his collection through his work as archivist at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. He wrote about religion and met many people through his work. Some are in his personal Bible. These days, Lutzweiler estimates he has nearly 400 autographs, including Svetland Alliluyva (Stalin’s daughter), Jerry Falwell, Red McCombs (former owner of Minnesota Vikings, Denver Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs), Senator Jesse Helms, Mon-

ica Lewinsky, evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, author James Michener, evangelist Dwight L. Moody, poet Carl Sandburg, Santa Anna (president of Mexico and winner at the Alamo), evangelist Billy Sunday and many more. Although he never met some of the celebrities in person, he still cherishes their autographs. Some have personal messages to Lutzweiler. He acquired Ginsburg’s autograph through her son, but it has a personal message to Lutzweiler: “To Archivist Jim Lutzweiler, May your life be filled with bright notes. Ruth Bader Ginsburg 9/1/2010.” Lutzweiler is most proud of David Rockefeller’s autograph.

comp Plan committee looks at vision statement By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com After two days of the Downtown Walking Tour and good feedback from the Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee with vision statement ideas, the Town of Jamestown and the Envision Jamestown team from Benchmark Consulting are feeling good about the Comprehensive Plan update. The 1-mile walking tours were held three times Oct. 3 and twice on Oct. 6. Approximately 60 people signed up for the tours, which started at Town Hall and covered both sides of the Main Street downtown area, stopping periodically for discussion. Topics included traffic and pedestrian safety, building uses, better pedestrian experience, creating more opportunity for sidewalk activities, making better use of underutilized properties, preserv-

ing historic sites and structures, and other things having to do with downtown revitalization, development and preservation. “People came from a wide variety of backgrounds and most had lived in Jamestown 10 or more years but there were also come newcomers,” said Vagn Hansen, with Benchmark, noting participation was mostly from those 50 years old or older. Everyone participated in the discussions. “It was a different focus, maybe better than we planned.” “Walking this week went great,” said Steering Committee member Denise Bowie. “I can’t say enough positive about it.” “It was so much fun in every way,” said Pam Burgess, another committee member. Councilmember Martha Wolfe participated and said, “It was a great experience.” SEE PLAN, PAGe 2

Council to meet: public comments open By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com For the first time in several months, the Jamestown Town Council will allow in-person public comments at its Oct. 20 meeting. The meeting will be closed to the public due to space limitations and the need to enforce social distancing. However, anyone who would like to speak during the public comment period will be allowed to enter the meeting one at a time and address Council. Contact Katie Weiner at 336-454-1138 to sign up. Interested parties may also sign up to speak before the meeting begins at 6 p.m. Under old business, the Council will consider approval of the Coronavirus Intergovernmental Agreement, which first appeared before the Council in August, but was tabled so more research could

be done about it. The CIA allows municipalities the opportunity to receive funds to cover Covid-19related expenses. Ross Sanderlin, golf and recreation director, will present the quarterly report on Jamestown Park and Golf Course. The Council will hold a discussion about seeking membership in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities. Following the regular meeting, the Council will hold a closed session to discuss the performance evaluation of the town manager, Kenny Cole. The Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. The Civic Center is unavailable this time due to early voting. The meeting will still be streamed live on the Town of Jamestown’s YouTube page, http://www.youtube.com/c/ TownofJamestownNC.

Health and healing in the great outdoors

COVID-19 has taken a toll on many, leading to physical problems and mental distress not directly related to the virus. Research shows, however, there is help as close as the great outdoors. An article by Susan McQuillan, a food, health and lifestyle writer, notes that data collected and analyzed by researchers Charles Hall and Melinda Knuth at Texas A&M University and published in the Journal of Environmental Horticulture supports the fact that time outdoors can dramatically boost physical and mental health. “Specifically, the researchers found that people who surround themselves with plant life and other forms of natural beauty, indoors and out, experience emotional and mental health benefits that have a positive impact on their social, psychological, physical, cognitive, environmental and spiritual well-being,” McQuillan writes. From The Front autographs continued from front

“He is one of the most mysterious businessmen of all time,” Lutzweiler said. “When he wrote a book, I sent a request to his office to buy an autographed copy of it. Instead he had his secretary send me his business card autographed.” He believes Billy Graham’s autograph was the hardest to procure. He has a magazine cover featuring the autographs of Billy Graham and presidents Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, all collected in person. The men are at prayer. “Technically, it was hard only in this sense: it took me forever to get it,” Lutzweiler admitted. “However, when that magazine picture came out with the three presidents on the occasion of the dedication of the Graham Library in Charlotte, it turned out to be quite easy. I knew the fellow who was with him 24/7 and I called to ask him, if Billy would sign. This was in days when he had Parkinson’s and unless you know in advance that it is his autograph, you might not be able to tell it.” Lutzweiler revealed that Graham had been an autograph hound as a young person prior to his ministry. Acquiring singer/actor Robert Goulet’s autograph was the easiest. Lutzweiler had seen Goulet in a play in Minneapolis and wrote a fan letter. Goulet replied The hobby of collecting autographs is known as “philography.” Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and John Kennedy were autograph collectors. Kennedy’s autograph is one of the most desirable of any U.S. president. The most valuable autograph in the world is that of William Shakespeare. Only six known examples exist.

(Left) Ruth Bader Ginsburg and (above) Sandra Day O'Connor and later provided a dust jacket review of a coffee table book written by Lutzweiler. Perhaps one of the oddest signatures he has is that of James Earl Ray, the assassin of Martin Luther King, Jr. “While I have Ray’s autograph, I was not the one to procure it. My brother was,” Lutzweiler said. “My brother worked for Lab Corp. One of the clients of that company was the prison where Ray was held. One day my brother asked the warden or a guard if he would get Ray’s autograph for him. He did. When my brother passed away, I pulled it from his library to keep it separate for whenever his widow decided what to do with it. Now I can’t find it!” Lutzweiler regrets missing out on the chance to procure other famous autographs including Muhammad Ali’s. “I once had a chance to buy a Russian ruble note with the autographs on it of Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, and Franklin Roosevelt from when they met at Yalta or Teheran. It was only $5,000, but that

was beyond my ability at the time.” Others on his wish list include N.C. State graduates Philip Rivers, quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts, and Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson. Not all of Lutzweiler’s autographs are on paper or magazine covers. One is on a banjo, another is on a record. He has over 70 autographs by Jimmy Carter – a pen pal since 2000 – and duplicates from several other people. All but the banjo are stored in notebooks with protective plastic covers. He does not trade. Lutzweiler is still collecting autographs. “Any time I am close to someone and have a chance,” he said of his passion. “The last one I recall going for was in a restaurant in Louisville where the Kentucky Bar Association was having its annual meeting. The chief justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court was maybe 20 feet away and so I moseyed over his way and engaged him in chatter.” One autograph Lutzweiler would really like to have is that of Russian

President Vladimir Putin. “That topic came up first, when Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter invited Shelly [Lutzweiler ‘s wife] and I to spend part of an afternoon with them,” Lutzweiler said. “I quizzed the president about Putin, as I have a keen interest in Russian studies. He told me he had met Putin, that they are in email contact, and that he had once been in Putin’s home. In a later letter to Jimmy C, I asked him if he could get Putin’s autograph for me. However, he said he could not.” Lutzweiler is also collecting autographs from potentially future celebrities. He often goes to sporting events for youngsters age 8-12 and asks the kids for their autographs. “I will ask them for their autographs and then tell them, ‘Now I want you to work hard and become a star so that I can be the first one to have your autograph.’ How is that for pressure? But I don’t think any kid has killed himself over the practice yet, and it is easy to see that they will never forget someone asking them at that tender age.”

At an earlier meeting, Hansen asked the Steering Committee to submit suggestions for a new vision statement for Jamestown. “The current statement was adopted in 2016 but it is very long,” Hansen said. A vision statement conveys the Town’s hopes for the future. It is intended as a guide to help the Town make decisions that align with its declared set of values and governing principles. It can be thought of as a roadmap to where the Town wants to be within a certain timeframe. The statement sets the foundation and provides direction for the Comprehensive Plan. It will form a basis for the goals and objectives, as well as more detailed topics that will be developed later in the process. Vision statements are future-oriented, concise, clear, challenging, inspiring and specific to the Town. Many of the committee members said the vision statement must reflect the small-town feel it has enjoyed for years and include the historic character of the town. “Growth is going to happen and we need to figure out a way that makes sense for the town and not grow for growth’s sake,” said Cory Rayborn. “You have to figure out how to make [growth] fit into the whole and not be something that sticks out.” “You all said the same thing in different ways,” Hansen said. “There is not a drastic change in the direction Jamestown should go.” He provided eight bullet points of visions to consider: maintain small-town charm, preserve historic character, protect natural and cultural resources, promote small businesses, be inclusive and allow planned growth, provide recreation and education, connect neighborhoods and be friendly and healthy. Town Manager Kenny Cole added his own thoughts. “The most important point is being friendly and healthy,” Cole said. “That’s what makes Jamestown unique. I love it.” “I agree,” Wolfe said. “What makes Jamestown special is the people.” For the next meeting, Hansen will work on a vision statement using the input he received from the committee. The current Jamestown vision statement, adopted in 2016: “Jamestown will maintain its historic heritage and neighborly atmosphere while actively managing growth associated with being located next to larger neighboring cities. Jamestown will maintain a small-town environment with a vital Main Street, residential neighborhoods, and its historical character as its focus. Jamestown will continue its commitment to recreation and community wellness by maintaining our walkways, Jamestown Parks & Golf Course and the Wrenn Miller Park. Jamestown will be attractive to both young and old with a variety of housing choices and price ranges. Jamestown neighborhoods, schools, businesses, historic districts and parks are key building blocks for Jamestown. We will reserve areas for each type of use while buffering each from the other as possible. We seek an attractive town that benefits from its historic sense of place and is well-landscaped and accessible to pedestrians. We will create a favorable atmosphere for compatible commerce, ones which are clean and provide good job opportunities for our residents.”
