Commissioners reject smoking ban in parks By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Vaping has been in the news a lot recently, with more and more health experts stating their belief that vaping is very dangerous to health. As of this writing, 12 deaths related to vaping have occurred in 10 states. With this in mind, the Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services wants to ban smoking on the grounds of municipal parks and any other property owned by the county or a local government. The department addressed the Guilford County Board of Commissioners during a public

hearing on Sept. 19. In a vote following the hearing, Commissioners rejected DHHS’s petition. Dr. Merle Green, Guilford County Health director, spoke on the issue at the Jamestown Town Council meeting Sept. 17. “The topic is protecting the safety of those who are not smokers in our community,” Green said. She thanked the town for its earlier decision to smoking in government buildings and vehicles. “In Guilford County, the county commissioners are also the local Board of Health,” Green said. “The local Board of Health has the power and authority to create rules that will have to be followed by every

municipality in their county.” Green said the proposed legislation was in two parts. Part one included updating language in the current rule to include new products such as e-cigarettes, vaping, hookahs, etc. Part two included expanding the current legislation banning

smoking in government buildings to more public governmental grounds, such as parks, golf courses and even the airport authority. These grounds include property owned, leased or occupied by local governments. This second part would have had an impact on

Jamestown Park and Golf Course. The smaller Wrenn Miller Park is already smoke-free. “The main concern I had heard is on the golf course,” said Councilmember Martha Wolfe. She acknowledged that the Town’s rules should be updated to reflect the new products. “We have golfers who really like a cigar on the golf course,” Green acknowledged, stating that a ban could have an economic impact. DHHS stated the danger of secondhand smoke is not limited to indoors, but can affect people up to 30 feet away. The department also cited a 2014 report from the U.S. Surgeon General stating that 5.6 million children

Author charms guests at High Point Literary League luncheon By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com There seems to be something special about authors reading their work aloud. They create a tone and rhythm to the words that can capture an audience as no other reader can. Such was the case when Lisa Wingate, guest speaker at the Sept. 25 High Point Literary League luncheon, read from her book Before We Were Yours. Guests listened attentively as Wingate set the tone of one of her latest works, a historical fiction. The book chronicles the story of Georgia Tann who ran an adoption-for-profit agency in Memphis, Tenn., from the mid 1920s to the 1950s. She kidnaped and sold poor children to rich families all over the country.

“Imagine not being able to have children or adopt from a conventional agency,” Wingate said. “Then you hear of a place where you can go and pick the hair color and eye color of the child you want. If you don’t like the child you get, you can return it and get another. “The dark side was there were not enough orphans to fill the need and children were stolen from hospitals and off the street. Sometime a whole group of siblings would vanish.” Wingate happened to see the story of Georgia Tann’s Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage on television while pulling an all-nighter on another book she was writing. “As a parent this story touched me and as I learned the true story see literary, page 2

could die from smokingrelated illnesses if bans are not in place. In 2016, the Surgeon General stated, “clean air – free of both smoke and e-cigarette aerosol – remains the standard to protect health.” DHHS recognized the problem of enforcing the rule on government grounds. “We just ask the park staff to inform – the word enforce seems a little strong – people that the park is smoke-free,” Green said. She added the town of Oak Ridge in Guilford County has already gone smoke free in their government-owned parks. Additionally, Burlington and Green Level in Alamance County, Cornesee ban, page 2

The Jamestown Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee will meet at 6 p.m. on Oct. 7 in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. Ross Sanderling, golf course manager, will report on the status of Jamestown Park and Golf Course. The committee will also learn of the progress of the Strategic Plan for Jamestown Park and Athletic Facility. To wrap up the meeting, the committee will hold a discussion on rules and procedures of the P&R committee. The public is invited to attend.

Reading initiative and scholarship winner announced The High Point Literary League is well known for featuring popular authors at its fall and spring luncheons, but members also place a lot of emphasis on literacy. This year the board decided to begin an initiative to encourage reading. “We selected High Point’s Communities in Schools as our first recipient and collected books and donations for them during our fall luncheon,” Martha Jobe, scholarship chair for the H.P. Literary League, said. “The amount of books donated have far surpassed what we expected,” added Janice Kubinski, league president. Tommy Walls, executive direc-

tor and Catherine Niebauer, director of volunteers with Communities in Schools of High Point, shared the importance of reading and the difference reading well could make in the lives of children. “You have no idea where the books you donated today may travel,” said guest author Lisa Wingate. “Things we read become part of our life experience. Donating books and reading to children are so important.” At each fall luncheon, league members also present a scholarship to a student at High Point University. The 2019-2020 recipient was Raegan Thomas, a senior majoring in English literature and minoring in religion and creative writing. “After I graduate, I would like

to work for a faith-based nonprofit organization,” Thomas said. The interests of the Stanfield, N.C., resident differs from the rest of her family. Her parents, Wayne and Alyssa, and her younger brother, a sophomore at UNCC, all lean toward mechanical engineering. “I want to help people with my writing,” Thomas acknowledged. “I enjoy teaching and interacting with others.” During her summers, she interned with the Cabarrus Baptist Association, where she organized camps for children and Vacation Bible Schools. CONTINUED FROM FRONT of these kids I thought of my own (two sons) and wondered how they would have survived or how I would have survived if these two pieces of my heart were missing.” As a fiction writer, Wingate began to think about who she could use as the voice to tell this story. The result was Before We Were Yours. Ballantine Books published it in June of 2017, just in time for the summer beach-reading season. Although it did not make the summer reading list in June or July, it continued to sell. Eight weeks later it made the New York Times Best Seller’s list and stayed there for over a year. “People read the book and told others about it,” Wingate said. “We think it doesn’t matter what we share, but the lesson here is that there is still power in word-of-mouth. “Thanks (to all the readers) for helping my first grade teacher’s dream for me come true.” Wingate admits she has been a book nerd ever since that teacher told her she

would be a writer some day. Growing up in a practical family, however, she majored in computer science and technical writing in college and worked in that field following graduation. She also worked as a freelance journalist. “Having a practical backup lets you be more flexible with your writing career,” Wingate noted. “It allowed me to wait on good opportunities to write.” A story shared by her grandmother after the birth of Wingate’s first son led to her first book Tending Roses in 2001. She has since written 30 novels and her books have been nominated for and received many awards. Readers voted the book Before We Were Yours as the 2017 Goodreads Choice Award winner for historical fiction. To date it has sold over one million copies. Once the book was published, Wingate began to hear from many survivors of the Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage scandal. Wingate, along with co-author Judy Christie, has written a book that

follows the stories of these families. Before and After, true-life accounts of some of the adopted children, will be published in October. Wingate, who comes from a family of storytellers, both her own and by marriage, believes stories can change the world. “Reading them in some way becomes part of our life experience,” she said. ‘I think we need to realize the part stories play in our lives and think about if what we are reading is making us better.” She much prefers writing fiction to journalism noting that in the latter one must be objective – bound to the truth – but in fiction a writer can fix all the bad things in the world. “If there are people you wish were kinder or nicer, you can fix that too,” she said with a smile. As a writer, she most enjoys connecting with people, both real and imaginary. The number of readers standing in line to have Wingate autograph copies of her book shows they evidently enjoy connecting with her also.

In 2009, Guilford County placed a ban on cigarettes and other tobacco products in governmental buildings. Jamestown adopted that ban at that time as well as a local ban on smoking at Wrenn Miller Park. Smoking was permitted outside government buildings “providing that the person smoking does not stand adjacent to a public entrance or air intake vent.” The county ban also applied to smoking inside governmental vehicles. Some people once wanted to take parts of Texas and Oklahoma to create the great state of Texlahoma (perhaps displaying a slight lack of imagination). When the Mormon church settled out west, Brigham Young petitioned to have the state of Deseret created, and the land he suggested make up the state included present-day Utah, almost all of Nevada and Arizona, a sizable chunk of California and bits of five other states. Long Island, in New York, even had designs on statehood at one time.

They did approve part one, updating the language regarding new products. If approved, the ban would have gone into effect Jan. 1, 2020, and impact all of Guilford County.

No, don't listen to Greta thunberg BY RICH LOWRY Greta Thunberg needs to get a grip. The celebrity teen climate activist addressed the United Nations and excoriated the assembled worthies for coming “to us young people for hope. How dare you! You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words.” Someone may have stolen her childhood, but the guilty parties can’t be found at Turtle Bay. A 16-year-old from Sweden, Thunberg thundered, “I should be back at school on the other side of the ocean,” which would have been easy enough to achieve, beginning with not taking two weeks to sail across the Atlantic last month in a jet-travel-eschewing publicity stunt. Greta Thunberg is the leading edge of a youth movement against climate change that is being promoted and celebrated by adults who find it useful for their own purposes. Kids are powerful pawns. The catchphrase “for the children” has a seductive political appeal, while kids offer their adult supporters a handy two-step. The same people who say, “The world must heed this 16-year-old girl” will turn around and say to anyone who pushes back, “How dare you criticize a 16-yearold girl.” There’s a reason that we don’t look to teenagers for guidance on fraught issues of public policy: Kids have nothing interesting to say to us. They just repeat back what they’ve been told by adults, with less nuance and maturity. Much of their climate advocacy boils down to the plaint that all parents know well: “I want it, and I want it now.” As a National Geographic headline put it, “Kids’ world climate strikes demand that warming stop, fast.”

Behind the foot-stomping is the idea that a long-running global phenomenon can be quickly stopped, if only adults cared as much as the kids. This fails to account for such recalcitrant factors as costs and complexity, but when do children ever think of those? (And who can blame them? They’re children.) Instead, the youthful climate activists claim they’ve been sold out by their elders. Greta Thunberg put it with her usual accusatory starkness at the U.N.: “You are failing us, but young people are starting to understand your betrayal.” This is laughable. By no global measure of social and economic well-being have we failed kids. According to HumanProgress.org, the global poverty rate fell from 28% in 1999 to 11% in 2013. Life expectancy increased from 63.2 years to 71.9 years from 1981 to 2015. The same benign trends hold for hunger, child labor, literacy and so on. If climate change proves a significant challenge, today’s youth will have more resources and technology to grapple with it than any other generation in the history of mankind. Of course, the adults they listen to don’t tell them any of this. Instead, they feed the kids a diet of apocalyptic warnings that children repeat back as if they were urgent insights. One speaker at the youth climate rally said we have just 18 months — yes, only until the beginning of 2021 — to forestall irreversible environmental harms. This is nuts, and it’s the adult enablers who are ultimately responsible. As for the kids, they’ll be all right. One day, they will grow up, even in a warming world. Volunteering at the shelter BY SAM MAZZOTTA PAW’S CORNER DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I really want a pet, but our apartment doesn’t allow them. My mom told me that I could volunteer at a local animal shelter instead. What kind of work would I do as a volunteer? — Amy in Bridgewater, Massachusetts DEAR AMY: There is always a variety of jobs for volunteers to do at animal shelters. These are usually assigned by the shelter manager or supervisor and are based on the tasks that need to be done and the age and ability of the volunteers. Now, keep in mind that not all volunteers get to work directly with animals in the shelter. That’s especially true if they’re brand-new or if they’re younger than 17. Instead, they may be assigned to handle tasks like cleaning, sorting through donated items or other jobs that don’t have direct contact with the animals.

If you are assigned to work with animals, you may be socializing with kittens, walking dogs outside, or feeding the animals in their cages or kennels — the list of needed tasks is long and never ends. That’s why most animal shelters require you to commit to a set number of hours per week or month. This isn’t a huge amount of time — maybe two hours a week -– but they’ll rely on you to be there when you say you will. Look up nearby shelters online and contact them about volunteer opportunities. Many have web pages with instructions on how to volunteer, which will help you decide how you’d like to help. And of course, shelters take donations of blankets, toys, pet food and cash, so if you aren’t able to volunteer directly, consider a fundraising or toy collection drive instead. Sweet news about sweet potatoes BY ANGeLA SHeLF MeDeARIS KITCHEN DIVA

You know that you’re a grownup when you fall in love with foods you disliked as a child. I never liked sweet potatoes, but we were raised to eat what was on our plates without complaint. My mother usually served them in the wintertime, so I had to endure them only a few months out of the year. Now that my job is researching, writing and cooking all types of foods, I’ve often revisited eating sweet potatoes. I challenged myself to try sweet potatoes in a variety of ways, including baked and topped with roasted peanuts and peanut butter (a la Dr. George Washington Carver); as sweet potato fries; mashed and used as a topping for shephard’s pie, and as a flavorful addition to soups and stews. Best of all, there are a multitude of health benefits in this beautiful tuber. The sweet potato is an excellent source of vitamin A, which supports good vision, the immune system and bone growth. Sweet potatoes are a good source of vitamin B-6, magnesium and vitamin C, along with iron, potassium and fiber. They also are great for the complexion. Sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene. A high intake of beta carotenerich vegetables like sweet potatoes can significantly reduce the risks for certain types of cancer. Those that are a pretty, bright-orange color are richest in beta-carotene. When it comes to nutritional value, the sweet potato ranks far ahead of the baked Idaho potato, spinach or broccoli, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest. High in fiber and low in fat and calories, this root vegetable is a healthful alternative to snack foods when prepared without added butter, sugar or salt. Unlike other potatoes, sweet pota-

toes like long, hot growing seasons. This might explain why it is the state vegetable of North Carolina. There is a difference between sweet potatoes grown in northern states and those grown in Louisiana. Sweet potatoes produced in the north are mostly “firm” and tend to be drier, with a mealier texture and yellow flesh. Folks in Louisiana enjoy the second type of sweet potato, which is “soft” and higher in natural sugar. Most often, it is the “soft” type that is referred to as a yam. Louisiana sweet potatoes are moister, and also have a bright-orange flesh color. Sweet potatoes are stored in temperature- and humidity-controlled warehouses that extend their shelf life for the entire year. So, the “season” for fresh yams is 12 months. Canned yams also are available year-round. Here’s some great information about how to select, store and prepare sweet potatoes: — Select fresh sweet potatoes that are smooth, plump, dry and clean. — Sweet potatoes should not be refrigerated unless cooked. Store in a dark place at 55 to 65 F. — Use a stainless-steel knife when cutting a sweet potato. Using a carbon blade will cause them to darken. — One cup of canned sweet potatoes equals one medium-sized, cooked fresh sweet potato. — When using canned yams, add them at the end of the recipe because they are already pre-cooked. This recipe for Three-Bean Chili showcases the flavors of the sweet potato in a spicy and healthy new way. THREE-BEAN SWEET POTATO CHILI 1 1/4 pound sweet potatoes, about 2 or 3 large potatoes 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 medium onion, diced 2 chipotle chilies in adobo, diced

3 cloves garlic, diced 1 tablespoon ground cumin 1 tablespoon chili powder 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon salt 2 cans (15-ounce) diced tomatoes 1 can (15-ounce) pureed tomatoes 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar 2 cups frozen shelled edamame 1 (15-ounce) can no-salt-added pinto beans 1 (15-ounce) can no-salt-added black beans 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, optional 1/2 cup sour cream, optional

1. Peel, core and thinly slice apples to make 8 heaping cups. 2. In a large bowl, toss apples with cinnamon, 1/4 cup sugar and 3 tablespoons flour. Fill pie shell with apple mixture, piling them high in center. 3. In small bowl, with hand, knead margarine or butter, remaining 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup flour into a soft dough. Pull dough into small pieces; flatten each slightly and arrange on top of apple mixture. (It is not necessary to completely cover the apple mixture.) Insert several wooden skewers (about 4 inches tall) in pie so that oven-cooking bag will not touch top of pie during baking. 4. Heat oven to 400 F. Place pie in oven-cooking bag. Close bag with nylon tie; cut six 1/2-inch slits in top of bag. Place pie in jelly-roll pan or on cookie sheet. Set pan on rack in center of oven (make sure bag does not touch oven walls or oven racks). Bake pie 1 hour and 15 minutes or until top of pie is golden brown. 5. Remove pie from oven, bag and all. Carefully, with kitchen shears, cut bag open. Remove pie. (The bottom of the bag will be greasy!) Set pie on plate on wire rack to cool. YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD’S BEEN REZONED OR HADN’T YOU HEARD? Right now, government officials have to publish their intentions in the newspaper. Including where they intend to build facilities you don't want down the block. But that will change if some politicians get their way. They want to start putting public notices online instead, buried somewhere on a little seen, rarely visited government website. Don’t let government keep you in the dark – help shine the light. .
