Exchanging old flags with new By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com there is an old saying, “It is not what you know but who you know.” Joanna Rudder, school counselor at Haynes-Inman education Center, knows that Vicki simmons, retired adapted Pe teacher at H-I has a vast network of friends and acquaintances. that is why Rudder turned to simmons when the school needed new flags to hang outside. “she asked me if I knew someone who could donate flags to our school because the current ones were very worn,” simmons said. “I decided to purchase them myself.”

Not only does Simmons have a deep love for the school at which she taught for 10 years since its opening in 2010, but she also wanted to donate the flags to honor the memory of her father Roger L. Simmons. Roger Simmons served in the United States Army and participated in the Battle of the Bulge during the winter of 1944-45. “Daddy was very patriotic,” Simmons said. “He would even stand and salute the flag when the Star Spangled Banner was played before a football game on television. In one of his columns as a newspaper editor, he wrote that people did not understand what it felt like to be shot at, freezing and starving all at the same time, things he had experienced during WWII. “He instilled in me a strong sense of patriotism.” Simmons ordered an American flag and North Carolina flag, as well as new ropes and hooks, from a company in Michigan with hopes of receiving it before Veterans Day. But while tracking her purchase, she saw the flags crisscross the distance between the company and the postal center in Greensboro twice before they finally arrived at her door. On Nov. 2, Simmons took the new flags to Haynes-Inman and watched as they were unfurled above the school. “My father would be so proud that he is being remembered by flags flying over a most wonderful school,” she said. “Vicki has always helped us connect with our community,” said Kevin Carr, principal at HaynesInman. “We are happy she was able to acquire new flags for our school and will fly them proudly each day.”

Scout uses eagle project to promote community fitness By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com when win scott, the son of mark and marcia scott of Jamestown, began to contemplate a project for his eagle scout award, he knew he wanted it to be something a bit different. But he also wanted something that could potentially benefit the entire community. noting how many people use the sidewalks in town to walk and jog, scott decided to place brick markers along it denoting quarter-mile segments. “I grew up running and would run until I was tired or it was dinner time,” said the Ragsdale senior who participated in track his freshman and sophomore years in school. “It would have been nice to be able to mark the distance I ran. “I saw a similar idea somewhere and realized I could incorporate distance markers into my community. It would be a great way to encourage fitness and help people track what they were doing. It was also a long-lasting project that would stand the test of time.” starting at wrenn miller Park, a total of 11 sandcolored bricks have been placed – a mile and a half toward Flowers Bakery on main street and a mile in the other direction to the Confederate arms marker on Guilford Road. on the first workday, three other scouts and three adults divided into

two groups and used measuring wheels to mark the exact distance between bricks. this proved to be the most challenging aspect of the project. twice the measurements had to be adjusted so a brick would not end up in the middle of a driveway. on the second workday, austin Blake, a town employee, took scott along the route in a golf cart and helped exchange existing red bricks in the sidewalk for the new sand markers. Before the project could even begin, however, scott had to get his idea approved by the Boy scout council. “they loved it and plan to use it as a blueprint for other scouts,” scott said.

He also needed to discuss it with Jamestown town officials. mayor Lynn montgomery suggested using etched bricks for more lasting results and matthew Johnson, assistant town manager and planning director, thought a color that was different from the others would

make the markers more visible. as a courtesy, scott spoke to the entire town Council about the project and received unanimous backing for his idea. Councilmember Lawrence straughn and town attorney Beth Koonce even contributed toward the

purchase of bricks. they were ordered from Pinehall Brick, the company that supplies all the town’s sidewalk and etched bricks. “mr. Johnson said he would like to see additional distance markers placed along the sidewalks, perhaps as a project by another scout,” scott said.

scott is happy to have his eagle project and the accompanying paperwork completed. next year, he looks forward to attending north Carolina state University where he has received a scholarship to play baseball. He plans to major in business management.
