Voters re-elect current mayor, council Charter amendment also passes

The Jamestown Town Council and mayor positions will have a familiar look in 2020. Current mayor Lynn Montgomery easily won reelection over Robert Frederick, receiving 70.77 percent of the vote to Frederick’s 28.78 percent. There were three writein votes amounting to less than 0.5 percent of the voting. Sitting councilmembers Martha Stafford Wolfe, Rebecca Mann Rayborn and John Capes also were re-elected as was former councilmember Lawrence Straughn, who served 2016-17. Long-time councilmember Georgia Nixon did not seek re-election. Wolfe received 26.26 percent of the votes, Rayborn 24.73 percent, Capes 19.21 percent and Straughn 18.85 percent. The fifth candidate, Dave Cohen, received 10.46 percent and the 11 write-in votes totaled 0.49 percent. Of interest to many was the vote on the Jamestown

charter amendment, which would allow for staggered terms of councilmembers. Jamestown voters approved the amendment 59.67 percent to 40.33 percent. This amendment will not go into effect until the 2021 election, at which time the mayor will be elected to a four-year term and the two candidates for Council receiving the highest number of votes will be elected to four-year terms. Those receiving the next highest number of votes will serve two-year terms. These two-year councilmembers would be up for re-election in 2021 and could run for a four-year term. Thus, a maximum of half of the Council would be elected every two years. The Guilford County Board of Elections notes that 17.93 percent of registered voters cast ballots this year and Charlie Collicutt, director of the Board, said this was a higher turnout than in recent years. There are 4,276 registered voters in the Jamestown area’s five precincts.

By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com Spring brings the start of vegetable gardens, flowering plants and trees bursting forth with new life. But it is fall when garden clubs begin their new year of activities. For Cedarwood Garden Club, fall of 2019 not only found members once again attending monthly gatherings, it also provided an opportunity to host the Garden Club of North Carolina 2019 District 5 Board Meeting. Approximately 50 people from 16 clubs throughout Rockingham, Randolph and Guilford countries met on Nov. 5 at Jamestown United Methodist Church for the event. Kenny Cole, town manager of Jamestown, joined Stacy Fogleman, Cedarwood Garden Club president, in welcoming the group to Jamestown. “He did a wonderful job sharing information about the town and what it has to offer,” said Sherrie Richmond, former Cedarwood Garden Club president and vice director for District 5. Following council and club reports, individual clubs were recognized for special achievements. Cedarwood was among 11 clubs that received a

Local resident declares brisket worth the wait By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com

Jim Lutzweiler thinks America should change its motto from “God, Mom and Apple Pie” to God, Mom and Brisket. His brother Adam of New Mexico first introduced him to brisket and Lutzweiler has been a fan ever since. “He made it but could not tell me the recipe,” Lutzweiler said. “He told he used a little of this and a little of that, but didn’t know the exact amounts. Lutzweiler says he has eaten brisket from Shenandoah to Seattle and all over Texas and was excited when he learned the new Black Powder Smokehouse in Jamestown would be serving it. He could not wait to give it a try. Not only did he want to try it, he wanted to be first in line when the business opened for the first time Nov. 6 at 10:30 a.m. “I am rarely first at anything,” Lutzweiler said. “I did win first place in an essay contest one time and my license plate says #1 Poet – but that is self-proclaimed. This first was easy. It did not take much effort. A friend of mine was first in line at Disneyland in 1955 and that is where I got the idea.” Lutzweiler invited several people to be his guests for the opening – behind him of course. He thought about camping out in front of Black Powder overnight to be sure he got the coveted spot, but opted instead to show up at 9:30 a.m. with a book in hand (he rarely goes anywhere without one) and a cane. “I took my cane to push anyone

A stiff, cool breeze was a bit uncomfortable, but failed to deter him from maintaining his spot. He simply wrapped himself in a blanket. After enjoying his meal, Lutzweiler proclaimed the Black Powder Smokehouse among four of the best places to get Texas Brisket in North Caro-

lina. Others include Phil’s Barbecue in Black Mountain, the Smokepit in Salisbury and Big Al’s in North Raleigh. About once a month Lutzweiler cooks his own version of brisket, which he says is pretty good. “But I’m happy to know anytime I want good brisket I don’t have far to go,” he said. “I can just drive two to three miles down the road and get good stuff. I will be a repeat customer.”

Several of their projects include purchasing and delivering bird seed to Haynes-Inman Education Center on a regular basis, as well as maintaining the Medicinal Herb Garden at Mendenhall Homeplace, the courtyard at Florence Elementary School and the entrances to the Cedarwood community. They also provide welcome packets to new neighbors, letting them know what is available in the immediate neighborhood and the greater Jamestown community. Jo Ann Lasker, director of District 5, explained to the group that Amazon Smile lets customers donate to improve distressed gardens. Members can send pictures, preferably action shots, of their own gardens to the state organization. Applications for the award must be entered by Dec. 1. The highlight of the meeting was a talk by Cedarwood club member Jeanne Megel. The former nurse and shark feeder is also a Monarch butterfly expert. She has researched and studied them for years. Megel presented a PowerPoint program about this species, explaining their decrease in numbers and how to help preserve the insects for their beauty and the benefits they provide through pollination. “Only one out of 100 will mature in nature,” Megel said. “That is why they need us to help protect them. In California, the Monarch population dropped from 148,000 to 20,500 between 2017 and 2018. “One of the biggest things to harm butterflies is pesticides,” she added. Megel calls herself a Monarch conservationist. She became interested in them after reading an article about their decrease and habitat destruction while living in Florida. “So I started raising Monarchs from eggs,” she said. She began by first growing plants that would attract the butterflies. She harvested eggs the butterflies laid on the plants and

Megel noted that this provided a more natural environment and kept them away from predators. When she moved to Cedarwood, however, the hatchery became plastic containers stacked in a closet. “Once they hatch you have to feed them,” Megel said, “and they eat a lot. They will also fight over food. I had to separate two caterpillars recently. I buy milkweed (their favorite food) from a nursery and plant it in pots.” The Monarch has five stages of growth called Instars. They molt between each stage. Butterflies who eclose – emerge from their chrysalis – before August live about one month. Their job is to eat and reproduce. Those who eclose after August are usually bigger. Monarchs west of the Rocky Mountains migrate to California and those east go to Mexico. They live

about nine months and migrate north in the spring, going as far as Canada. People interested in attracting Monarch butterflies to their yards and helping to maintain their population can grow the insects’ favorite plants. These include Zinnias, Butterfly Bushes, Liatris, Asters, Chive Flowers, Salvis and, of course, Milkweed. “I consider raising Monarchs a calling,” Megel said. “It is definitely a passion.” The district meeting ended on a fun note with drawings for door prizes. “Members left with renewed energy to plant pollinators and with fresh ideas to contribute to their communities,” Richmond said. “The Cedarwood Garden Club’s theme for the Year is ‘Sowing the Seeds of Friendship’ and that was certainly reflected during the hosting of North Carolina’s District 5 garden clubs in Jamestown.”

'Nationalism' shouldn't be a dirty word By Rich lowry If there’s one thing that elite opinion tends to agree about on the left and the right, it’s that nationalism is a very bad thing. If anything, this view has become even more entrenched as nationalism has demonstrated its potency in recent years, from the election of Donald Trump to Britain’s vote to leave the European Union. When President Trump first openly embraced the term “nationalist” at a 2018 campaign rally, commentators reacted in horror. Patriotism is about love, nationalism about hate, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof opined. Trump, insisted Jennifer Rubin of The Washington Post, is “normalizing a hateful political philosophy that is contrary to our deepest-held beliefs.” As I write in my new book, “The Case for Nationalism,” this reflexive hostility to the concept is ill-informed and an attempt to deem nationalism a swearword and end all discussion on that basis. At its most basic, the scholar Azar Gat writes, nationalism is “the doctrine and ideology that a people is bound together in solidarity, fate, and common political aspirations.” Historian Anthony Smith described the national ideal as “a belief that all those who shared a common history and culture should be autonomous, united and distinct in their recognized homelands.” When Europe went off the rails in the early 20th century, nationalism as such didn’t cause its crash so much as social Darwinism, militarism and the cult of charismatic leadership. The aftermath of World War I added its own poison. Regardless, American nationalism — which encompasses such diverse, rightly beloved figures as Alexander Hamilton, Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt — is not to be feared. As with so many other things about this country, it is more benign

'Was my dog poisoned?' By Sam mazzotta paw’s corner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have three dogs that freely roam our 26-acre property almost year-round. In August, our youngest dog, “Striper,” went out for a couple of hours and when he returned he was panting heavily. He began drooling and then vomiting. As we got ready to take him to the vet, he collapsed and stopped breathing. We weren’t able to revive him. Our vet said he could have eaten something poisonous. Since then I’ve walked or ridden all over our property to see what he might have eaten, but I’ve found nothing. My neighbors couldn’t have given him something bad. What could have happened? — Mystified in Northern New Hampshire DEAR MYSTIFIED: First, I am truly sorry that you lost Striper so tragically. Finding the reason may require a little more investigation. Did the veterinarian give any indication of what the poison may have been?

Did you look at what Striper vomited up just before he collapsed, or take a sample to the vet? While it’s not always possible to tell without more testing, looking for clues to what happened can help to keep your two surviving dogs safe. Some wild plants are poisonous to dogs, though the worst types usually taste terrible. Standing water with a blue-green algae bloom is a possibility; this cyanobacteria, deadly to pets, often blooms in Southern states in late summer but is creeping northward due to climate change. Household garbage may have cleaning chemicals or old medications mixed in with tempting food scraps. Could old antifreeze have been dumped near the edge of your property? Consider any and all possibilities. Meanwhile, you can keep your other dogs safe by securing outdoor garbage can lids, separating household cleaning containers from regular trash and monitoring the dogs’ outdoor roaming more closely. than the versions to be found in Europe and elsewhere. This is true for a number of reasons. First, we are the inheritors of an Anglo-American tradition that has profound respect for the individual and the rule of law and is a fundamental part of our national identity. The sheet anchor of American sovereignty, the U.S. Constitution, makes it clear that authority ultimately resides with “we the people of the United States.” The Constitution also happens to be a durable mechanism of self-government and itself an object of patriotic loyalty and national pride. Finally, the United States was never infected with the dream of universal empire that Europe inherited from Rome and that has lingered on in differing forms from Charlemagne to the European Union. The rise of Donald Trump has pushed the left further away from respect for nationalistic attitudes and even patriotic symbols. Democrats — and the country — would be much better served if they countered Trump’s nationalism with a version of their own. On his own side of the aisle, Trump has made Republicans more nationalistic. Still, much of the party is quietly uncomfortable with this. If Trump loses in 2020, the party’s establishment may try to snap back to its pre-Trump disposition of relative indifference. Yet, if there’s one clear political lesson from the long history of nationalism in this country and elsewhere, it is that a party interested in moving people and selling a program should make some sort of an appeal to it — even if conventional wisdom insists it is foolish and wrong.

Slow-cooker granola is a game-changer We’re a granola-eating family. When the tall jar in our pantry reads almost empty, it’s time to stir up and bake a new batch. It’s never a chore, because the fresh homemade taste of hearthealthy oats with nuts and dried fruit always satisfies, whether combined with yogurt and berries at breakfast, or sprinkled over a scoop of ice cream for an evening dessert. No wonder I was curious when a friend suggested I make granola in my slow cooker instead of baking it in the oven. Skeptical, I gave it a try and loved the results. In fact, it’s a game-changer. I stick with my basic recipe that never disappoints. The handcrafted, economical blend is open to variations, like substituting cashews for the almonds or pecans. When I buy a jug of fresh local maple syrup, I leave out the brown sugar entirely. For variety, I’ll cut up something unusual, like dried persimmons, to toss in at the end with the raisins.

TASTY SLOW-COOKER GRANOLA Cooking spray or olive oil 4 cups old-fashioned rolled oats (not quick cooking) 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup coarsely chopped whole almonds 1/2 cup coarsely chopped pecans 1/2 cup canola oil 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 egg whites, slightly beaten 1/2 cup raisins

1. Prepare the slow cooker: Spray bottom and sides of a 3-quart or larger slow cooker with the cooking spray, or lightly coat with oil. 2. Combine the oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, salt and nuts in the slow cooker. 3. Stir together the oil, vanilla and egg whites in a small bowl. Add to dry ingredients and toss well until fully coated. 4. Turn slow cooker to high. Set a wooden spoon under one side of the lid to hold the lid open, slightly ajar. Cook for 1 1/2 to 2 hours

until toasted, stirring mixture well every 30 minutes. 5. Stir in raisins and spread mixture on a baking sheet to cool. Store in jars or in an airtight container. Makes about 6 cups. NOTE: Substitute brown sugar with 1/2 cup maple syrup, honey or agave syrup, and combine with liquid ingredients before tossing with dry ingredients. In addition to (or instead of) raisins, use your favorite dried fruit, chopped. GIFT-GIVING TIP: Let kids draw a label to glue to a mason jar. It might say “The Johnsons’ World’s Best Granola.” For a holiday gift, tie a colorful ribbon around the jar.

Good Housekeeping SPLIT PEA SOUP WITH HAM This hearty old-fashioned favorite is a perfect pick-me-up on a cold, blustery day. 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 (6 ounces each) white turnips (optional), peeled and chopped 2 carrots, peeled and finely chopped 2 stalks celery, finely chopped 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 package (16 ounces) dry split peas, rinsed and picked through 2 (1 1/2 pounds) smoked ham hocks 8 cups water 1 bay leaf 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice 1. In 5-quart Dutch oven, heat oil over medium high heat. Add turnips, if using, carrots, celery and onion; cook, stirring frequently, until carrots are tender-crisp, about 10 minutes. Add split peas, ham hocks, water, bay leaf, salt and allspice; heat to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 45 minutes. 2. Discard bay leaf. Transfer ham hocks to cutting board; discard skin and bones. Finely chop meat. Return meat to soup. Heat through. 1. Heat oven to 450 F. Into large bowl, measure self-rising cake flour. With pastry blender or two knives used scissor-fashion, cut in shortening until evenly combined. *Note: If not using self-rising cake flour in step 1, substitute 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 cups cake flour (not self-rising), 1 tablespoon baking powder and 1 teaspoon salt; place in large bowl, then cut in shortening. Continue as in steps 2 through 4. 2. Stir milk into flour mixture just until ingredients are blended. 3. Scoop dough by scant 1/4 cups onto ungreased large cookie sheet. If you like, with floured hands, lightly pat scoops of dough to smooth slightly. 4. Bake biscuits about 15 minutes, or until lightly browned. Serve biscuits warm. Couch Theatre BY AMY ANDeRSON Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (PG13) — Cybernetically engineered villain Brixton Lore (Idris Elba) seeks a dangerous supervirus. To secure it, MI6 agent Hattie Shaw (Vanessa Kirby) injects it into herself and goes on the run. The powers that be pair up charming, larger-thanlife lawman Luke Hobbs (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) and sophisticated fringe operator Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) — who’s also Hattie’s brother — to track her down. The two men are fire and ice with an adversarial history, and as they fight to save the world, there’s a whole lot of ban-

Healthy Living

Start a new tradition this Thanksgiving BY ANGeLA SHeLF MeDeARIS KitcHeN DiVa I’ve been preparing the same basic, traditional Thanksgiving menu for almost 35 years now. But in the past few years, our children have grown up, married and now have families of their own. Our tastes have changed, and our lives are more hectic. So what’s a Diva to do? I’ve decided to create a new family Thanksgiving tradition with a schedule and menu that fits our lifestyle ... and you can, too! I’m starting to look at specific dates for holidays as suggestions, not the rule. It’s unbelievable how that simple decision has freed me from stress and allowed me to relax and enjoy the holidays with the people that I love most. First, we’re no longer celebrating our family Thanksgiving on Thursday. It’s too difficult and stressful to get our large, multigenerational family together at the same time on Thanksgiving Day. In order to make everyone happy, some family members were traveling from one city to another to eat multiple Thanksgiving dinners at various times. It’s hard to be thankful if you’re bloated and stressed out from fighting traffic all day. To resolve this problem, we’ll have individual Thanksgiving dinners and then gather on another day for our family celebration. Second, it’s easier for our family to get together on Sunday afternoons, so that’s the day we’re celebrating Thanksgiving as a group from now on. We’ve also decided to celebrate my birthday and my mother’s birthday on that Sunday, since they both fall a few days before Thanksgiving. Third, we’re trying a new menu this year. As we’ve gotten older, our health issues and dietary preferences range from gluten-free to diabetic to vegetarian. So, move over green bean casserole with mushroom soup and canned fried onions! Goodbye sweet potatoes with toasted marshmallows! There’s a new list of modern, flavorful dishes waiting in line to become the go-to side dishes for our nonThanksgiving Thanksgiving! And last, but not least, some Thanksgiving traditions will never change, no matter how untraditional our Thanksgiving holidays will be in years to come. We’ll still stand in a family circle, join hands and thank the Lord for each other and all our blessings. My daughter gives everyone a thank-you card with a hand-

written note that I treasure each year. My oldest sister will bring the corn dish that everyone loves and that we only get during the holidays. And I’ll make a diabetic-friendly, gluten-free sweet potato cheesecake that will become a new holiday tradition that we can all enjoy! So, Happy Thanksgiving everyone, and try something new this year, like this delicious recipe for sweet potato cheesecake. SPECIAL SWEET POTATO CHEESECAKE This diabetic-friendly and glutenfree cheesecake recipe serves 12 and is a delicious new addition to our traditional Thanksgiving desserts. Best of all, you can make it up to three days before serving. Nonstick cooking spray 3 (8 ounce) packages fat-free cream cheese, warmed in a microwave for 15 seconds 1/3 cup Splenda Brown Sugar Blend (or 5 tablespoons Splenda and 5 tablespoons packed, light brown sugar) 3 large eggs 1 (15 ounce) can sweet potato puree 1/2 cup low-fat maple or vanilla yogurt, plus 1/2 cup for garnish 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 teaspoon imitation maple or rum flavoring 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Jamestown Christmas Parade

1. Heat oven to 350 F. Coat the bottom and sides of a 9-inch springform pan with nonstick cooking spray. 2. Using an electric mixer, beat cream cheese and Splenda Brown Sugar Blend or the Splenda and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs one at a time. Blend in sweet potato puree, yogurt, cornstarch, cinnamon, ground ginger, maple or rum flavoring, and vanilla. 3. Pour filling into prepared pan. Bake until outer rim is puffy and center is slightly wobbly, about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Remove from oven and run a butter knife around the inner edge but do not remove the pan side. 4. Let stand at room temperature 30 minutes. Refrigerate warm cake, uncovered, until cold. Then cover with foil and refrigerate at least 4 hours (or up to 3 days). Remove 1 hour before serving. 5. When ready to serve, carefully remove side of pan. Cut into 12 wedges with wet knife wiped clean between cuts. Garnish with a dollop of yogurt, if desired. it’s best to taper off heartburn meds BY KeITH ROACH, M.D. tO YOUr gOOD HealtH DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 61-year-old woman in fairly good health except that I have been taking prescription omeprazole once a day for heartburn for at least 10 years, if not more. I’ve read articles that say this isn’t good to take long term, like I’ve been doing. When I’ve tried to stop by using famotidine instead, I still suffer from heartburn throughout the day. I’ve raised my bed and tried sleeping in an upright position. Your thoughts, please. — O.D.S. DEAR O.D.S.: It certainly is a good idea to periodically review with your doctor all the medications you take, to decide whether they are still necessary. It is very often the case that people are taking medications for unclear reasons, and the person who is prescribing it has been doing so without really thinking about whether the benefits still outweigh the risks, especially as people get older and may have acquired new conditions or had medication changes. Proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole frequently are prescribed for short-term use but end up being continued for years. Except in people who absolutely need it (such as people with Barrett’s esophagus), I agree with a trial of stopping and using H2 blockers like famotidine on an as-needed basis. I recommend a taper, not a sudden stop. Proton pump inhibitors are likely to increase the risk of infection, such as pneumonia (without acid in the stomach, bacteria are not killed as efficiently) and intestinal infections; may possibly increase the risk of osteoporosis; and probably reduce vitamin B-12 and iron absorption. Although there have been reports of increased risk of kidney disease and dementia, I doubt the actual clinical risk is significant. Still, there are enough possible adverse effects that it is worth balancing the risks against the benefits of reducing symptoms. I am glad you tried some nondrug therapies, as we doctors often do not emphasize how important they are. In addition to raising the head of the bed (bricks under the feet is traditional, but a foam wedge under the mattress is also effective), losing weight for those who would benefit, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, and not eating three hours before bedtime make drugs unnecessary for many. Some people benefit from eliminating certain foods, especially caffeine, chocolate and fatty or spicy foods. DEAR DR. ROACH: I received literature in the mail about a new miracle cure for enlarged prostate. The ads state that the new pills shrink the prostate back to normal. Is there such a pill, or is this a scam? I am afraid it is pills filled with drywall dust. — B.F. DEAR B.F.: I’m afraid it’s more likely to be a scam than real, but there are a few herbal therapies that have been shown to help — but not cure — enlarged prostate glands in men. Saw palmetto is well-known, but most recently was found to be no better than placebo. Beta-sitosterol, cernilton and Pygeum africanum all are plant extracts with some evidence of benefit, at least when it comes to symptoms. You are quite correct that without independent laboratory verification, there is no way to be sure of the quality and purity of dietary supplements. They are not regulated the way prescription drugs (or even foods) are. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.
