Pedestrian bridge dedicated It took over 20 years of discussion but a pedestrian bridge over the City Lake at East Fork Road is now a reality. The Town of Jamestown held a dedication ribboncutting ceremony for the pedestrian bridge on Nov. 13 and Public Services Director Paul Blanchard accepted the 2020 “Great Healthy Place” award from Hannah Cockburn, president-elect of the N.C. Chapter of the American Planning Association during the ceremony. Blanchard designed and acted as engineer and proj-

ect manager for the bridge project. The award is part of the group’s Healthy Places, Healthy Communities awards initiative. “The award celebrates investment in communities that make places healthier to live, work, play and learn,” Cockburn said. Former and current Town Council members and staff who assisted with the project participated as cars passed over the vehicle bridge, avoiding walkers who had to detour off the pedestrian one during the ceremony. Roger Bardsley was a member of the Jamestown in Motion committee, which began the process of

Council terminates town manager By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com The Jamestown Town Council meeting Nov. 17 went quickly. It took only 30 minutes to go through the main agenda, but a nearly 50-minute closed session at the end stretched the meeting nearly one hour longer. The closed session was one of several held by the Council as a performance evaluation for the town manager, Kenny Cole. When the regular session resumed, the Council unanimously voted to terminate the contract of Cole, who has been in that position since May 2017. As this is a personnel matter, no further information was available. Assistant Town Manager/Planning Director Matthew Johnson will take over some of the duties while the search for a new manager is underway. Johnson has been assistant manager since late 2017. The meeting opened with Mayor Lynn Montgomery reading a resolution honoring the retirement of Steve Allred as fire chief of the Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department. Allred joined the department in 1988 and has served as chief since 2012. Allred was named Piedmont Region Officer of the Year in 2014 by the North Carolina State Firefighters Association. In other business The Council approved the creation of an AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities committee. At it’s October meeting, the Council approved participation in the project at no cost to the Town. The Town will be eligible for related AARP grants. Members of the committee will be responsible for guiding the livability project through the assessment, planning and implementation steps. Members of the committee will reach out to community leaders and organizers to create partnerships in support of livability goals. Those interested in participating in the committee should contact Town Hall. Johnson provided an update on the status of the rezoning request for the Johnson property along Guilford College and Mackay roads. He noted that the Planning Board had received a revised plan for the property the Friday before its Monday meeting and felt it needed more time to review the proposal. Therefore, the Board voted to continue discussion of the development until Nov. 23, at which time a vote is expected. In December, the Town Council is expected to set a date for a public hearing. “Worth noting is the fact that the applicant has submitted another zoning request for this property for a single-family resiSEE MANAgER, PAGe 2

planning for the Jamestown sidewalk system many years ago. “To me, this is a symbol that says Jamestown wanted to be a place where you could walk,” Bardsley said. “You have come so far and we’re all so proud of you.” The new pedestrian bridge connects the sidewalks of Jamestown with the Bicentennial Greenway. Construction on the bridge began in January of this year with East Fork Road travelers experiencing some temporary lane closures as well as complete closure for several Photo by Carol Brooks months. The inconvenience Councilmembers Martha Wolfe and John Capes, Mayor Lynn Montgomery, was worth it, however, Public Services director Paul Blanchard and Councilmembers Rebecca Rayborn and Lawrence Straughn cut the ribbon officially opening the new East Fork SEE BRIdgE, PAGe 2 Road pedestrian bridge.

First fire truck repurposed By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com

Imagine if inanimate objects could speak – what tales they could tell. For one 1928 American LaFrance pumper fire truck it would be a story of service and sedentariness, of retirement and renewal. The fire truck in question was the very first one the town of Jamestown put into use when it established a fire department. After being retired as a working engine in 1968, it has come full circle back to Jamestown where Bruce Dillon, Art Wise and Stephen Thomas are breathing new life into its parts. “Jamestown bought the fire truck from the city of High Point in 1948,” Dillon said. “George Matthews was fire chief, the only paid worker. All other firefighters were volunteers.” Matthews lived in a house behind his service station on Main Street, where the truck was originally housed. The building, which is now The Deck, also later included the town hall. The truck served the town well until it was retired and replaced with a newer model. Willard Moore, lifelong Jamestown resident and founder of Yesteryear in Motion, purchased the fire truck

old sedgefield barn to be saved By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com The old barn at the Sedgefield Showgrounds may have a new life in its future. In February of this year, the Greensboro Zoning Commission approved rezoning of the Sedgefield Showgrounds property. Affordable Housing Management plans to develop a multi-family residential area comprised of approximately 220 apartments on the site. The Greensboro City Council also approved the rezoning at its April meeting, postponed from March due to the pandemic. The Showgrounds are on the corner of Groometown and Vandalia roads in Greensboro and were once part of Sedgefield Country Club. Residents of the area, as well as many who competed in horse shows at the Showgrounds, protested the rezoning, pointing out the fact that the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources sev-

eral years ago saved it from demolition to become part of the Urban Loop because it was an historical property. It was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, causing the loop to be re-routed. However, no designation was ever requested. The property contains an equestrian showground and buildings. But a Facebook post earlier this month by Save the Sedgefield Showgrounds and Stables said that the Preservation Greensboro Development Fund has agreed to preserve the old barn, which sits on one acre of land. Cheryl Pratt, with Preservation Greensboro, said the group has signed an agreement with Affordable Housing Management and hopes to take possession in early 2021. Pratt said a structural engineer has said the barn is in good shape, but needs a new roof, new water/sewer lines and updated electrical. There are several possible uses for the barn, including farmers market and restaurant.

Part of the old stable barn at Sedgefield Showgrounds was constructed in 1927. The Preservation Greensboro Development Fund acquires and saves sites of historic or architectural significance. The group then sells the property for rehabilitation and reuse. Whoever purchases the barn property and the land from Preservation Greensboro would have to enter into an agreement with Affordable Housing for any additional acreage needed. One feature of the agreement is that the barn would not be demolished nor would removal of any historic or architectural

exterior features be allowed. Affordable Housing Management requested rezoning from County RS-40 (Residential single-family) and City R-3 (Residential Single Family) to CD-RM-18 (Conditional District – Residential Multi-family). The majority of the site is located within Guilford County jurisdiction, not within Greensboro and annexation is expected. Earlier, both the Greensboro Planning Board and Zoning Commission approved the annexation request.

manager continued from front approval of a new Engineering Technician job description to a future meeting. There was confusion about which department this person would be primarily working under. There were also questions about the description itself. In committee reports, Councilmember Martha Wolfe reported she learned at the Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) meeting earlier that day that the bypass construction was a little behind schedule but should be completed by December 2021. The Lydia sidewalk (East Main Street) completion date is February 2021.

dential zoning district,” Johnson said. “It is staff’s belief that this would be a ‘backup’ plan in the event that discussions of a Planned Unit Development (PUD) option fail. This would be heard at the Planning Board’s regular meeting Dec. 14.” The Council unanimously approved a budget amendment to hire an individual to run the video and sound systems for streaming Town meetings. Johnson has been doing this for several months. The cost estimate and amount of budget increase is $2,600 for covering the next five months of Town Council meetings and Planning Board meetings. The date of Jan. 22 was set for the Council’s annual retreat. Mark (Win) Scott was approved as the Ragsdale High School student representative to the Town Council. Scott will begin his duties in December. The Council continued the vote for

because Town officials believe the project came in ahead of schedule. In 2020, early pandemic protocols did not slow down the construction and the new bridge was put into place by cranes on April 8 of this year. The bridge arrived in Jamestown in pieces, which were placed on the vehicle bridge for assembly. Moving the bridge into place took less than 15 minutes. Funding from grants received by the Town of Jamestown from the Federal Highway Authority and N.C. Department of Transportation paid for the approximately $1.5 million bridge project. Any money paid out by the Town will be 100 percent reimbursed. Additional work included installation of a concrete sidewalk deck, a guardrail on the Jamestown side of the bridge and the continuation of the new concrete sidewalk along East Fork Road. On the golf course side, the Greenway crossing has been re-aligned and curb and gutter added. Parking has always been illegal in that area and now will be impossible with the installation of a guardrail.

Without the concrete deck, the bridge weighs approximately 11,000 lbs. and is 200 feet long. About 1,250 feet of sidewalk was added along East Fork Road to connect with existing sidewalks. Some people are surprised with the rusty look of so new a bridge. The look was on purpose, said Blanchard. “It’s a weathered steel finish. It doesn’t need to be painted,” he said. “It heals itself, protecting itself. This being [over] a water supply reservoir, it would be cost-prohibitive if we did paint it. This is a very popular finish because it’s very low maintenance. “And it’s pretty! It’s rustic. A plaque is placed on the Jamestown side of the pedestrian bridge commemorating the work of those who made the bridge possible. Anthony Thomas of Taurus Studios shot drone videos of the construction, bridge installation and dedication ceremony. continued from front and it became part of his collection of old mechanical objects. Shortly before his passing, Moore auctioned off some of his equipment and the old fire truck was sold to John Jenkins a Greensboro businessman. “Jenkins lived on a farm and wanted to fix the truck so his grandchildren could enjoy riding it,” said Thomas, chief fire marshal of the Pinecroft/Sedgefield Fire Department. From there, the truck found its way to Randolph County and the home of Joe Smith, a former employee of Jenkins. The fire truck was the first one Smith had driven and he wanted it as part of his fire equipment memorabilia. After his retirement, Smith decided to liquidate his collection and offered to sell the engine to the Pinecroft/Sedgefield Fire Department. “The fire department decided it could not buy it,” Thomas said. But he discussed the possibility of Jamestown purchasing the engine since it played a big part in the town’s history. Cookie Billings, serving as town manager at the time, got the acquisition approved and the town actually purchased the fire truck in June 2017. Working within a budget for parts, Dillon, Wise and Thomas have volunteered their time to bring the old engine back to the look of its glory days. It has not been an easy task, requiring hours of work by the three men and some outsource of labor. A company in Archdale painted the truck, another one in Tennessee refinished the chrome pieces. “The chrome would have been hard to replace so we did not want to chance mailing it,” Dillon said. “We drove the pieces to the company ourselves.”

(Above) Art Wise and Stephen Thomas check out a part that will soon gain a spot on Jamestown’s original fire truck. (Below) Bruce Dillon adjusts an additional piece to the truck.

“We had to have some parts especially made for the engine,” Wise added. “Thank goodness for the Internet so we could search to see who does what.” There is still a lot of work to be completed before the truck will be ready to roll down Main Street during holiday parades or be on display as part of James-

town’s rich history. “We have no time frame to do it, but we will work to completion,” Dillon said. Once the truck is finished and mobile, it will live at the Jamestown Fire Station. But after all the labor invested in the project, Dillon, Wise and Thomas plan to be the first ones to enjoy the ride.

By AMy ANdERSON I have never been one for Black Friday shopping. Even in a nonpandemic year, I can’t tolerate the chaos of mass retail. Maybe it’s because I did my college years behind the counter of a shop facing down the general public on a daily basis. Maybe it’s because I prefer my couch and a great movie. But even with an endless supply of goods at my fingertips these days through aps and websites, I still miss shopping in a store. Here are a few movies either set in shops or with an iconic shopping scene to remind you of better, or at least more shoppable, times. Ah, Thanksgiving — cleaning, shopping, cooking and entertaining guests for hours! While Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, I’ve embraced the day after the holiday as my time to feast in peace. My traditional after-Thanksgiving breakfast consists of a cereal bowl full of warm leftover turkey, ham, corn and dressing with cranberry sauce. One of my favorite after-feast lunches is a turkey and ham sandwich with cranberry sauce and any other leftovers I can fit between two slices of toasted bread! In my opinion, Thanksgiving leftovers are a national treasure. If you store your leftovers safely and properly, you can enjoy them in a variety of ways for several days. During mealtime, do not let the turkey sit out for more than two hours after it has been cooked. For safe storage, remove the stuffing and de-bone the turkey. Store the turkey in shallow containers in the refrigerator, because shallow containers allow the turkey to cool faster, preventing the growth of harmful bacteria. Unless you freeze the leftovers, be sure to use the turkey and stuffing within 3-4 days. Leftover gravy should be used within 1-2 days. Other cooked dishes can be stored up to 4 days. Frozen leftovers should be stored at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below and used within 3-4 months. Turkey in gravy or broth, or other cooked turkey dishes can be frozen for 4-6 months. Stuffing and gravy can keep up to one month in the freezer. Marking your leftovers with the date and name of the item will help you keep better track of them. Here are a few ideas for using the leftovers from your Turkey Day feast: TURKEY WRAP 4 pieces of turkey (about 3-4 ounces) 1 tablespoon light mayonnaise
