Board approves new zoning district The Town of Jamestown staff believes that the bypass currently under construction will bring the potential of expanded development to the area. In advance of the bypass opening, Planning Director Matthew Johnson has proposed a text amendment to the town’s

Land Development Ordinance to accommodate future development in a new zoning district. The proposed zoning would create “Planned Unit Development,” or PUD, areas within the town’s jurisdiction. “PUDs are generally used to regulate larger scale developments using unified land development practices which encourage a mixture of various types of land uses while maximizing open spac-

es and recreational opportunities,” Johnson said in an address to the Planning Board in a special called meeting Nov. 18. “PUDs offer increased flexibility in design to potential developers, yet still require the strict review by the Planning Board and Town Council prior to implementation. The new Grandover Village area at West Gate City Boulevard/ Jamestown Parkway and Guilford College Road is a good example of a PUD district, encompassing residential and commercial properties constructed by Koury Corporation. By CaRoL BRooKs freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Many people think of Christmas as presents, Santa Claus and get-togethers with family, friends or co-workers. For some, however, Christmas means only one thing – decorative lights. McLaurin Farms in Greensboro has become one of the area’s top holiday attractions, even if it is not the dazzling “lightzilla” display where several houses in a neighborhood attempt to out-do each other

to see how many lights they can put on their house and yard. People tend to think of McLaurin Farms not for heart-warming Christmas lights but as heart-attack spookiness in the 28-yearold Woods of Terror. Owner Eddie McLaurin wanted to do something different for Christmas. “I wanted to do something for the Christmas holidays and something for the kids,” McLaurin said. “Woods of Terror is not for kids.” His Christmas event was almost a Krampus Christ-

Riding through neighborhoods during the Christmas season and viewing all the brightly colored lights and other festive decorations is one of the joys of the holidays. One traditional Christmas display on Guilford College Road will be missing this year, however. Santa in his sleigh, pulled by nine reindeer as they glide gracefully into the sky, will be gone. Vince Venturino crafted the display

after moving to the area in 1997. “He first built a plywood cutout of a Santa Claus train,” said his grandson Jason Spangler. “But he later decided to make Santa in his sleigh and a reindeer. Each year he added more reindeer and over the course of about six years had all nine on display.” Since Venturino first erected the jolly old man and his flying fleet, family and friends would gather on the first Sunday in December for their Annual Lighting of the Reindeer. see ReindeeR, Page 3

Council denies sewer service By CaRoL BRooKs freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com When a homeowner or developer requests water and sewer service to a location, the Town of Jamestown does its best to accommodate that request. Sometimes, however, it is not possible. Doug Wentz, of 6311 Hickory Hollow Road off Guilford College Road, requested sewer service to his property, which lies outside the Jamestown town limits but within its extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ). Wentz was hoping he could connect with the Jordan Creek townhomes on Mackay Road adjacent to his property. There are problems with that, however. “When Jordan Creek townhomes were built, the sanitary sewer was put in as a public sanitary sewer, with a stub at Hickory Hollow Road,” said Public Services Director Paul Blanchard. “The water line, however, was put in privately. We do not

have town water inside the development.” Jordan Creek townhomes began construction in 2006. Blanchard added that there is town water on Mackay Road and on Duchess Court in The Grove subdivision across Guilford College Road from Hickory Hollow Road. So, water is available but connections would have to run under paved roads and a long distance. Wentz’ house was built in 1974 and he is now experiencing sewer problems, with water washing across his street and flooding his land. A call to Town Hall resulted in a referral to NCDOT, which inspected the problem and dug a ditch along the road for drainage. “That is not where the water goes,” Wentz said. “It helped a little. It did not resolve the problem. “The septic tank floods regularly. I pump it regularly.” see seWeR, Page 2

Daughter charged with murder of Cedarwood woman By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com The calmness of the Cedarwood subdivision was shattered on Nov. 16 after Guilford County Deputies discovered what was later determined to be a homicide. Deputies arrested Tina Lenore Heal, 58, on Nov. 18 and charged her with Image Courtesy first-degree murder in the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office Tina Heal death of her mother, Jean Ruth Oxley, 85. Oxley was found dead in her home from traumatic injuries in an apparent homicide. Deputies were originally summoned at approximately 1:30 a.m. Nov. 15 to a report of a suicidal person at a residence in the 400 block of Tangle Drive in the Cedarwood subdivision. Emergency Medical Services personnel located the person (Heal), gave medical attention and transported her to the hospital. Deputies were then asked to provide a welfare check for another family member (Oxley) who lived nearby at 107 Bellwood Court. At that location, deputies found a female deceased. This would allow [developers] a lot of flexibility in moving around their uses.” He said with this type of zoning, the Planning Board and Town Council could make a development fit the town’s character. “With PUD, we maintain a lot of control,” said board member Ed Stafford. “[Developers] can’t just throw on any planned unit development.” Johnson said PUD districts would serve as a base zoning for larger-scale commercial, residential and mixed-use developments, which may include

overlay districts such as the Traditional Neighborhood overlay district. Districts are not limited to mixeduse but may be entirely residential or commercial. During the public comment section of the meeting, no one spoke either in favor or against the text amendment. With very little discussion, the Planning Board unanimously found the proposed zoning amendment to be consistent with the town’s Comprehensive Plan. The following evening, the Town Council set a public hearing for Jan. 21 to consider the text amendment.

continued from front appearance, however, so there is still a bit of scariness to the event. McLaurin met with Christmas show planner David Masters about six years ago. The first year Masters helped, the event drew approximately 2,000 people and has grown to over 12,000. “We have between 600800 trees wrapped in over 800,000 lights,” McLaurin said. “We put lights on everything. It’s the only professional Christmas light display presented in the Greensboro area. Each year it grows.” One area evokes the Land of Misfit Toys from the classic 1964 “Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer” television cartoon, including Rudolph, Hermey, Yukon Cornelius and the Abominable Snowman. The midway area includes a place to write and mail letters to Santa, ornament making and concessions with donuts, s’mores, hot chocolate and apple cider. Other touches help get visitors into the Christmas spirit. “We’re going to have real snow,” McLaurin said. “It’s going to snow every night. We’ll make sure that happens.” McLaurin Farms 6th annual Christmas Lights Hayride opens Thanksgiving Day and is open Thursday-Sunday from 6-9 p.m. through Dec. 29, with two special showings Dec. 23 and 24. It is closed Christmas Day.

The ticket office is open 6-8 p.m. Admission is $8 per person ($5 on Thursdays) and ages 2 and under are free. Parking is $2. The hayride is included in the admission price but customers are urged to make a reservation for $2 extra per person if they want to ride at a specific time. Reservations can be made at 336643-3558. Wentz is the only resident of Hickory Hollow Road requesting sewer service. He stated that it would be less expensive for him to repair his existing sewer system than to tap on to the Town’s system but that it is an ongoing problem. Wentz has a well so water was not addressed in this request, just sewer. However, public water and sewer services come as a package. You can’t have one without the other. “We have to meter the water to bill the sewer,” said Town Manager Kenny Cole. Councilmember Martha Wolfe suggested that sewer could be extended to Wentz’ property and a water meter placed on his well to monitor the sewer usage. She remembered this has been done in the past but Cole pointed out

that the current policy does not allow this type of water meter and the Town should not stray from the policy. “To do this we would have to revise the policy,” Cole said. If the area were to be annexed, then water and sewer would be added but Cole said annexation was not currently in the Town’s best interest. After discussion, the Town Council unanimously denied Wentz’ request for sewer services from the Town. Wolfe added, “Reluctantly denied.” “I don’t see there is anything we can do at this time,” said Mayor Lynn Montgomery. “It’s unfortunate.” In other business: • Public Services Director Paul Blanchard reported that work has begun on the East Main Street (Lydia) Sidewalk project. Resi-

dents may have noticed some traffic delays as contractors began work. The East Fork Road pedestrian bridge is currently being fabricated and should arrive in January, Blanchard said. He added that he and the contractor are working with the NCDOT on a product for the global stability for the bridge. Construction on the bridge will probably require a longer road closure than initially planned. • The Council heard a report on the Parks and Recreation Master Plan and the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. Details will be in upcoming issues of the Jamestown News. Following the regular session, the Council adjourned to go into closed session to discuss matters related to attorney-client privilege.

Garden Club sells decorative holiday bows By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com

Christmas decorations are already popping up in neighborhoods across the community. The Cedarwood Garden Club is making decorating for the season a bit easier this year with its sale of large red bows. Stacy Fogleman, president of the club, demonstrated how to make bows at the group’s Nov. 14 meeting. Members began the task of creating bows they hope will grace homes in Cedarwood and other communities. The deep red bows are made from 2½-inch wired satin ribbon and come in two sizes. Those that are approximately 8-9 inches across sell for $5. Mailbox bows, which are 11-12 inches across, are $8. Orders will be accepted until December 10, and anyone in the area can purchase them. To order, contact Judy Gecinger at 336312-9747, or Sharla Gardner at 336-4541088. Checks should be made payable to Cedarwood Garden Club. Funds raised from the sale of bows will be used toward the many community projects club members conduct each year. For 53 years, the Cedarwood Garden Club has provided members the opportunity to share and expand their knowledge of gardening and their creative abilities. In addition, the club has served its neighborhood as well as the Jamestown area through its community outreach. Along with main-

Does A-Fib diagnosis mean no more steak? By keith roach, M.D. to your good health DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation a year ago. A week after that, I had an MRI that showed I’d had a ministroke and probably several others in the past. I love ribeye steak, and eat it maybe two or three times a year. Is this safe? — R.A. DEAR R.A.: Atrial fibrillation is a rhythm problem of the heart. The natural rhythm is lost, so the heartbeat becomes irregular. Because of the lack of normal movement in the heart, the blood can pool and form clots in the left atrium; these clots can travel downstream to lodge in a blood vessel. Clots can cut off the blood supply to the area where they lodge. It’s most critical when it happens in the brain, since if brain cells die, function is lost. A stroke is just a focal area of cell death in the brain. The size and location of the area in the brain where cell death occurs determines how significant the stroke is. Strokes can range from unnoticeable to devastating to fatal. Most people with atrial fibrillation take medication to reduce the risk of stroke. Eating poorly can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke as well, but most commonly this happens via a different mechanism. High amounts of saturated fat — such as in ribeye steak, which is fattier than many cuts of beef — increase the risk of damage to blood vessels through buildup of cholesterol plaques. These plaques cut off blood supply, and this causes a heart attack if the plaques are lodged in the arteries of the heart, a stroke if in the brain and various problems if in other parts of the body. In people who have a history of stroke, it’s particularly important to take steps to reduce further risk. That means a discussion with your doctor about whether you are on the best treatment for atrial fibrillation and whether you have evidence of cholesterol plaques. Even if you don’t have any evidence of plaques, a healthy diet of mostly plants, with whole grains, nuts and seeds, some fatty fish if you enjoy that and sparse amounts of meats reduces many health risks. However, two or three steaks a year is not going to cause harm. The best data available shows that people who have 100 grams (just over 3 ounces) of red meat a week are at the lowest risk of developing blood vessel problems. It’s not clear that zero is better than that small amount. In any event, I am a firm believer that enjoying life is the goal. If having a steak a few times a year is truly enjoyable, the risk is small, and you should enjoy those meals without guilt. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. continued from front When Venturino passed away on Oct. 8, 2013, a lone reindeer wearing a black scarf was placed in front of his home. A bouquet of yellow mums was positioned at the reindeer’s feet. But when Christmas came, Venturino’s family made sure that Santa and all his reindeer once more graced the front lawn, helping to brighten the holidays for all who passed. Since Venturino’s widow, Mary Helen, sold her home in 2019, it appeared the Christmas display would be grounded with no place to fly. Spangler, his wife Melissa and their two daughters decided to keep the family tradition alive by placing the display – minus one reindeer – in their front yard at 210 Woodlawn Road in Jamestown. “My grandmother wanted to keep one of the reindeer as a remembrance,” Spangler said. “This year, we are inviting the entire community to attend our Annual Lighting of the Reindeer at our home on Dec. 1.” Many of the reindeer needed to be repaired and painted, which was accomplished with help from members of the newlyformed Jamestown Anchor Club. Sponsored by the Pilot Club, this international youth service organization has hundreds of clubs in schools around the world. The Spanglers’ neighbor, Shannon Clegg, is the former president of the International Pilot Club and helped get the Anchor Club started in the Cedarwood community. The Lighting of the Reindeer event will also be a fundraiser sponsored by the Jamestown Anchor Club. They are asking people who attend the Lighting of the Reindeer to donate food, treats, toys and blankets or beds, which will be delivered to the shelter the Friday after the event. Those not able to attend may still contribute to the animal shelter by dropping off their donations at Spangler’s business, Budget Printing, 107 Hillstone Dr., in Jamestown. big and small,” said Melissa Spangler. “It may be an act of kindness, such as mowing the yard for someone who is not able to do so, sharing their talent in a show at a local nursing home or volunteering their time for service activities that the town needs.” Collecting supplies for nursing homes, memory care centers, schools and the homeless population or surprising firemen and police officers with a treat are other ideas club members have considered. Helping paint the rein-

deer to bring cheer during the Christmas holiday is but the start of the club’s service. “They have many ideas on how to make our community a little bit better,” Melissa said. The community is invited to join the Spangler family Dec. 1 at the Annual Lighting of the Reindeer’s new location, 210 Woodlawn Drive in the Cedarwood community. Life in the wild is no life for pets By Sam mazzotta paw’s corner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: If a pet gets released into the wild, can it survive on its own? — Ben G., via email DEAR BEN: Some domesticated pets can survive for a while outdoors, hunting or scavenging for food. But they have a much shorter lifespan and can easily fall prey to injury, sickness or other predators. Dogs, for example, have been domesticated for so long that they’ve lost many of the key skills required of a wolf or a truly wild dog. According to a study published in 2010, “Pet dogs failed basic intelligence tests that wolves and wild dogs pass with ease.” This may be because pet dogs are trained to expect food at certain times of day, and do not have to hunt for it — so they’ve never really had to think about how to solve certain problems.

And while cats are noted for their independence and hunting skills, a cat abandoned in the wild may not fare very well — and may become prey for larger predators or even feral cats. The same goes for other domesticated pets. Rabbits? There’s a good chance Flopsy will just sit there in the field where you abandoned him until a hawk spots him and swoops in. Parrots? They’ll have trouble finding food they can eat, and except for the very southernmost parts of the U.S., winter temperatures will stress their systems fatally. My point is that releasing pets into the wild is utterly cruel and downright cowardly. A pet is a responsibility, one you’ve taken on. If you’re having trouble taking care of a pet, resources are available in your local community, from shelters to pet charities. Ask for help. Don’t just abandon your pets. Elizabeth Warren's fail on 'Medicare for All' By Rich lowry

The clear loser of the Democratic primary is “Medicare for All.” First, it demonstrated the unreliability of Kamala Harris out of the gate, when she endorsed it before quickly backing off. Now, it has blunted the momentum of Elizabeth Warren, made a mockery of her claim to be an uber-wonk and shredded her implicit appeal to Bernie Sanders supporters as an equally committed leftwinger without the baggage. Under pressure for weeks for details related to her version of the proposal, Warren has now backed all the way down to promising to pass Medicare for All by the end of the third year of her presidency. This is an implicit concession that she won’t do it at all. No presidential candidate ever pledges to do something important in Year 3. That’s when, if history is any guide, a president has suffered a midterm drubbing and lost all legislative momentum. Warren wants us to believe that this would be the opportune time for her to pass perhaps the most sweepingly intrusive government measure in American history. Warren’s fundamental mistake was to believe, like almost all the Democrats early in the race, that she had to chase Bernie Sanders around the track, which inevitably involved backing his signature health care proposal. But it became immediately evident that it’s one thing to promise to eliminate all private health insurance if you are a self-declared socialist; it’s quite another if you imagine yourself anything short of that. As soon as another erstwhile Bernie band-wagoner, Harris, uttered out loud that she’d end private health insurance, it created a controversy that she was clearly uncomfortable with. As a way to wiggle out of it, she came up with her own plan.

Warren lasted longer. Her undoing was that her resolute unwillingness to say that she’d raise middle-class taxes to pay for the program undermined her selfimage as a woman with a “plan for that.” She had to jerry-rig a financing program built on such outlandishly rosy assumptions about costs and revenues that even her journalistic cheerleaders have been skeptical. As she continued to take fire, Warren announced her “transition” plan, effectively saying the program is not a first-term priority. In so doing, she has managed to bring on herself the worst of both worlds. Democratic purists will be disappointed in her, and Sanders voters feel confirmed in any doubts they already had about her commitment. It should have been foreseeable that proposing a ruinously expensive, enormously coercive health program would present political problems. Even Democratic primary voters aren’t fully sold on a Medicare for All plan that eliminates all private insurance. Sanders has gotten away with it because socialism is his brand and conviction. He hand-waves away questions on the specifics — what do they matter, when the revolution will make all things possible? In contrast, Warren let the critics get into her head, just as she did over her purported Native American heritage, and stumbled into a messy, self-destructive response, just as she did with her DNA test last year. Democrats have to be wondering, over and above her struggles with Medicare for All, if this is really who they want to send up against the endlessly combative and needling Donald Trump next year.

Thanksgiving sweets to fall for By KRisTi MaieR contriButor @triadfoodies Foodies, there’s way more to the sweet life and Thanksgiving desserts than pumpkin pie. I’ve rounded up some of the most delicious recipes (two from local food bloggers) that are sure to please after your feast, or before, or the next day. PUMPKIN DREAM CAKE (recipe adapted from Jessica Merchant, author of The Pretty Dish and HowSweetEats.com blog) This cake isn’t overly spiced; feel free to add a bit more cinnamon or even pumpkin pie spice to your liking. This frosting recipe calls for two blocks of cream cheese. I found one was plenty, but if you love frosting, follow the recipe as specified. 2-cups all-purpose flour 2-teaspoons baking soda 1 ¼-teaspoons ground cinnamon ½-teaspoon salt ¼-teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg One 15-ounce can pumpkin puree 1 ¾-cups brown sugar ½-cup plain Greek yogurt ½-cup vegetable oil Four large eggs 2-teaspoons vanilla extract Cinnamon cream cheese frosting Two 8-ounce blocks cream cheese ½-cup unsalted butter 2 ½-cups powdered sugar ½-teaspoon cinnamon 1-teaspoon vanilla extract

into the greased baking dish and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until a tester inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean. Cool the cake completely. Once the cake has cooled, frost with the cream cheese frosting, slice and serve.

total time baking so you have an accurate estimate of how long it’ll take to make the full recipe.) I prefer to bake one sheet at a time to ensure even baking. But, I prep two sheets so I can put the second one in as soon as the first comes out. Then, I let the first pan cool a bit before reloading with dough to bake for the last round. These are best eaten the same day but still fine in an airtight container for three to four days. However, I do recommend baking them in small batches and baking just what you need for the day. (You can refrigerate the rest of the dough for three to four days until you’re ready to bake more.)

Frosting instructions: Beat the cream cheese and butter together until creamy, then beat in the sugar and cinnamon until combined. Beat in the vanilla extract and frost the cooled cake.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spray a 9-by-13 inch baking dish with nonstick baking spray. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg. In a large bowl, whisk together the pumpkin, sugar, yogurt and oil. Once smooth and combined, whisk in each egg one at a time and then whisk in the vanilla extract. Add the dry ingredients to the wet, mixing until it’s combined with no large lumps remaining. Pour the batter

In a large bowl, cream together pumpkin, sugar, applesauce, egg, and vanilla and mix well. This should yield a fluffy, light brown mixture. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, salt and baking powder in a separate bowl. Gradually add the dry mixture to wet and mix until it’s combined. (Don’t over-mix it!) Fold in chocolate chips and use a small ice cream scoop to form the cookies and place 1 to 1.5 inches apart. (The cookies won’t spread so they can be close.) Bake for seven to 10 minutes until the cookies feel springy to the touch. (Don’t over-bake!) Remove to a wire rack to cool.
