Pig owner responds to Town order By CarOl BrOOKs freeLance Writer cab1hp@gmail.com On Oct. 22, Jamestown Town Attorney Beth Koonce sent an email to Lori Herron and her husband Michael Young stating, “The Town of Jamestown is moving forward with enforcement of the code violation against you. The next steps will involve financial penalties and the seeking of an injunction from Superior Court enforcing the provisions of the

Town’s Ordinance against keeping pigs in residentially-zoned areas.” In July, Herron and Young, of 2216 Guilford College Rd., and owners of 10 pot-bellied pigs, requested the Town create a text amendment to Article 3, Definitions, of the Land Development Ordinance. The article defines “limited agriculture” as “the keeping of gardens and animals for non-commercial domestic use. Such agriculture generally refers to, but is not limited to, domestic

fowl such as chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese, bees, and other small animals (ex: rabbits). Limited agriculture does not permit livestock such as horses, cows, llamas, sheep, swine or the like.” Herron claimed her pot-belly pigs are pets and therapy animals, not livestock. She wanted to amend the text to read, “Limited agriculture does not permit livestock, animals used for food or fiber, such as horses, cows, llamas, sheep, swine over 300 pounds, or the like, not to include

miniature or pot-bellied pigs that are kept as and considered to be pets.” Both the Jamestown Planning Board and Town Council denied this request, with the Council also voting in October to direct Koonce to “take the necessary legal steps to enforce the ordinance related to the keeping of swine within a residentially-zoned district at 2216 Guilford College Rd., including the levying of fines, injunctive relief or any other legal means necessary.”

“My initial reaction [to the email] was exasperation/disgust,” Young said. “We moved to Jamestown in 2000. As potbelly pig owners we are very aware that some municipalities do not allow pigs. We went to Town Hall in person before we ever purchased a house in Jamestown. We were welcomed to the town, including our pigs. Twenty years later we are given a notice that we have 30 days to get rid of the pigs.” see Pig, PaGe 2

Lidl plans grand opening By CarOl BrOOKs freeLance Writer cab1hp@gmail.com Jamestown, Sedgefield and Adams Farm area residents will soon have several options when it comes to grocery shopping. With the announcement last week that Publix will open Nov. 13, it has been learned that another grocery chain, Lidl at Adams Farm Shopping Center, will also open on the same date. Doors are scheduled to open at 8 a.m. The German company has stores in Thomasville, Lexington and WinstonSalem, along with a regional distribution center in Alamance County. The first 200 customers to the Adams Farm store will receive gift cards ranging from $5 to $250 as well as free samples and reusable bags, while supplies last. Anyone signing up for a Lidl newsletter will be entered into a raffle for a $500 store gift card. Three winners will be drawn. Rumors floated around for at least a year before Lidl announced the location of the new store in 2017. The rerouting of High

Point Road, now Gate City Boulevard, allowed the shopping center to offer more parcels to new businesses. One parcel became the Harris-Teeter gas station. Another went to Wendy’s and a third one to Lidl. “Lidl is not your cookie-cutter grocery store,” states the company’s website. “We’re revolutionizing grocery shopping. We have a less complicated process that allows us to simply deliver low prices, high quality, and the best shopping experience for our customers. “Instead of offering a myriad of brands in every category, our stores offer carefully curated selections that are top-quality and best prices. So your precious time is not spent sifting through endless see lidl, PaGe 2

stacks of wood await the fire. Only wood, no gas or electricity, is used in the smoker.

Long-awaited barbecue restaurant opens By CarOl BrOOKs freeLance Writer cab1hp@gmail.com Mouths have been watering in Jamestown since about this time last year when word got out that a barbecue restaurant was coming to the old gas station at 302 E. Main St. at the Guilford Road intersection. Mouths will still be watering after they taste the delicious food at Black Powder Smokehouse, which opens Nov. 6 at 10:30 a.m.

Keith Henning and Ryan Herring, partners in the venture, say their restaurant is a little different from other barbecue places. Their website calls it “artisan barbecue.” “Black Powder Smokehouse is a no-frills barbecue smokehouse focused on serving delicious food,” Henning said. “The biggest difference in our restaurant is our smoker. We use wood … period. There’s no gas, no electricity, and we think it makes a difference. “According to Webster’s Dictionary, artisan is ‘a person or company

that produces something in limited quantities often using traditional methods.’ People often think of artisan as trendy, fancy or expensive. That’s not the case at all. We keep it simple, use quality meats, and cook with wood.” Black Powder will be a family-friendly venue, with buckets of sidewalk chalk, corn hole boards and other kid-friendly activities, all designed to draw people to the restaurant to stay a while. see BBQ, PaGe 10

Some people might consider history a bit dull. That certainly would not apply to the history shared by Clarajo Pleasants and Jim Gonsiewski Oct. 26 during the 50th Anniversary Gala at Jamestown Presbyterian Church.

Christmas at Mendenhall returns to the Mendenhall Homeplace this year and includes the popular Candlelight Tour as well as a new attraction, Cookies with Santa, where guests can have a tintype photograph made with the jolly old fellow. “In the summer I visited Chattanooga and had an authentic tintype portrait taken in their historic downtown,” said Rachel Orio, a volunteer at the Mendenhall Homeplace who is leading the events this year. “Since those pictures were relevant to the time period when the Homeplace was built, I wanted to incorporate them somehow to our events. I brought the idea of pictures with Santa to the committee and Cookies with Santa was created into its own special event.” Cookies with Santa will be Dec. 7 from noon-2:30 p.m. in the Madison Lindsay House on the Homeplace grounds at 603 W. Main St. in Jamestown. Tickets are $10 per family and include the photo and a gift from Santa. Dalton Photography will create the photos and

Orio said she even plans to have her own photo taken. “People are welcome to bring their entire family or just themselves and sit with Santa,” Orio said. “The $10 includes one pose with Santa and additional poses are $10 apiece.” Photos will be emailed after the event with a tintype filter applied and Mendenhall date stamp on them. Guests are urged to return that evening from 5-8 p.m. for the Candlelight Tour of the Mendenhall Homeplace and grounds, now in its fourth year. The house will be candle-lit and decorated in true Victorian fashion. Luminaries will again line the pathway to the Bank Barn where Santa’s sleigh will be filled with gifts. From the Barn, the pathway leads to the Madison Lindsay House where cookies and cider will be served. New to the Tour this year is a harpist,

spinner and living history interpreters in the Richard Mendenhall house, which is over 200 years old. Admission to the Candlelight Tour is $20 in advance or $25 at the door. “The Candlelight Tour is how I became familiar with Mendenhall,” Orio said. “Visiting for the past two years, I loved being able to walk through this piece of history in a town I’ve really fallen in love with. When I started volunteering in March, I wanted to get involved as much as possible. I believe that an event such as this is an opportunity to bring the older and younger generation together to share history and work together to preserve it for the future.” Tickets for both Cookies with Santa and the Candlelight Tour may be purchased at the door, at Mendenhall Homeplace at 603 W. Main St., through PayPal at www.mendenhallhomeplace.com or by calling 336-454-3819. Proceeds benefit the ongoing work of the Historic Jamestown Society.

NCDOT TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING REGARDING THE PROPOSAL TO GRADE SEPARATE FRANKLIN BOULEVARD AND CLOSURE OF O’FERRELL STREET RAIL CROSSING AND PROPOSAL TO EXTEND NACO ROAD FROM O’FERRELL STREET TO U.S. 70 (BURLINGTON ROAD) WITH RAIL GRADE SEPARATIONS AT WARD ROAD AND WAGONER BEND ROAD AND THE CLOSURE OF MAXFIELD ROAD AND BUCHANAN CHURCH ROAD RAIL CROSSINGS IN GREENSBORO

STIP PROJECT NOS. P-5709 / Y-5500GA The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes project P-5709 to grade separate Franklin Boulevard and closure of O’Ferrell Street rail crossing. A grade separation means using a bridge to separate intersecting roads and/or railroads. Project Y-5500GA proposes to extend Naco Road from O’Ferrell Street to U.S. 70 (Burlington Road) with rail grade separations at Ward Road and Wagoner Bend Road, and closure of rail crossings at Maxfield Road and Buchanan Church Road in Greensboro. The purpose of the project is to remove existing atgrade railroad crossings, provide safety improvements, and improve passenger and freight rail operations along the Piedmont Corridor between Raleigh and Charlotte.

Young pointed to the 2009 Land Development ordinance that does not allow pigs in a residentially-zoned area. He zeroedin on a grandfather clause in the ordinance that states, “Grandfathered. Not affected by a change in the Ordinance absent physical modification or abandonment. Buildings, land uses, and lots or parcels of property that do not meet the standards of this Ordinance but existed prior to the effective date of this Ordinance, and complied with prior ordinances, regulations, and or standards, shall not be affected by this ordinance absent physical modification or abandonment.” “We have repeatedly asked [Councilmember] Martha Stafford Wolfe, [Councilmember] John Capes, [Town Manager] Kenneth Cole and Beth Koonce to explain the legal reason why the grandfather clause in the 2009 ordinance does not apply here,” Young said. “Instead of giving us an answer, their response was to send a letter threatening to take us to Superior Court to force us to remove the pigs. “Honestly, it outrageous that they can’t provide a legal explanation here. Our house is zoned single family residential. The 2009 version of the ordinance prohibits livestock, including swine, horses, sheep, cows, llamas. If the grandfather clause does not apply here, then why has the town declined to send a letter to

the Jamestown Equestrian Academy (also zoned single family residential), demanding that they get rid of their horses and other livestock. The reason is pretty obvious. The grandfather clause protects their farm that same way it protects my potbelly pigs.” Herron says her pigs are emotional support animals and Young offered an example of their worth. She had a seizure the previous week requiring hospitalization. When the seizure happened at 3 a.m., the pigs woke him up. “That is their job,” Young said. “Those pigs are part of Lori’s support network. Had the pigs not alerted me, Lori likely would have had seizure after seizure all night long. She could have died or ended up with permanent brain damage. The Town Council has ignored all documentation regarding that these pigs are more than pets. They are part of Lori’s team and they perform a vital function.” He said pigs also provide companionship for Herron. Animals are therapeutic. Pigs are better than dogs as therapy animals and are many times smarter and more aware. Young believes the law will ultimately be on his side. “The Town of Jamestown can’t take any action without taking it in front of a judge,” Young said. “If they can’t explain to me a legal reason why the grandfather clause somehow doesn’t

apply here, I don’t think they’ll have much luck explaining it to a Superior Court judge. In addition, I don’t think a Superior Court judge is going to make a ruling that would leave Lori without her support and leave her vulnerable to a medical issue that could kill her or do permanent brain damage. “I would also love to hear the Town explain to a judge their legal reasons for applying ordinance to one household while a household walking distance from here is getting a free pass (the Jamestown Equestrian Center).” The Center is located at 1903 Guilford College Rd., just up the street from Herron and Young. Young blames the Town for the harassment the family has received since the issue became public and that will factor into future developments. “We already have an attorney on stand-by,” he said. “If the Town of Jamestown takes us to Superior Court on it, we don’t intend to lose and we’ll be countersuing for $500,000 in damages.” One option Herron and Young have is to relocate, but neither wants to. “If we have to move, then we’ll move,” Young said. “The pigs are too important to Lori and Thursday night’s seizure only underscored that need to me that much more. Her health and wellbeing are more important than clinging to a house.”

lidl

continued from front versions of products you don’t want. “We’re also continuing the Lidl tradition of offering new favorites from all over the world, keeping you looking forward to what you’ll find next.” Around 90% of the items offered in Lidl stores carry the company’s own private label. “After three years of research, we discovered that U.S. consumers don’t like discount groceries,” the company stated in a presentation acquired by Business Insider. “Unlike Aldi, Lidl will be a hybrid similar to Trader Joe’s or Harris-Teeter, but closer to a Trader Joe’s. We will sell high-end brands, quality not quantity, best products only.” Lidl is not just a grocery store. The

company has items for use in the home, like small appliances or kitchen gadgets, clothing, toys, power tools, home décor, gardening supplies and more. Lidl stores began in Ludwigshafen, Germany, in 1973. The first store outside Germany opened in the 1990s in France and the first United States store opened several years ago. Expansion plans include 25 new stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. According to USA Today, the name Lidl rhymes with “needle.” The new Lidl is located at 5696 W. Gate City Blvd., behind Harris-Teeter and just 1.5 miles from the new Publix and across from an entrance to the Sedgefield area.

A public meeting will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21 at Genesis Baptist Church, 2812 E. Bessemer Ave. in Greensboro. The purpose of this meeting is to inform the public of the project and gather input on the proposed design. California can’t keep the lights on By riCh lOWry California is staying true to its reputation as the land of innovation — it is making blackouts, heretofore the signature of impoverished and war-torn lands, a routine feature of 21st-century American life. More than 2 million people are going without power in Northern and Central California, in the latest and biggest of the intentional blackouts that are, astonishingly, California’s best answer to the risk of runaway wildfires. Power — and all the goods it makes possible — is synonymous with modern civilization. It shouldn’t be a negotiable for anyone living in a well-functioning society, or even in California, which, despite its stupendous wealth and natural splendor, has blighted itself over the decades with misgovernance and misplaced priorities. The same California that has been the seedbed of world-famous companies that make it possible for people to send widely viewed short missives of 280 characters or less, and share and like images of grumpy cats, isn’t doing so well at keeping the lights on. The same California that has boldly committed to transitioning to 50 percent renewable energy by 2025 — and 100 percent renewable energy by 2045 — can’t manage its existing energy infrastructure. The same California that has pushed its electricity rates to the highest in the contiguous United States through its mandates and regulations doesn’t provide continuous access to that overpriced electricity. California could have, if it wanted, pushed the utilities to focus on the resilience and safety of its current infrastructure — implicated in some of the state’s most fearsome

recent fires — as a top priority. Instead, its public utilities commission forced costly renewable energy initiatives on the utilities. Who cares about something as mundane as properly maintained power lines if something as supposedly epically important — and politically fashionable — as saving the planet is at stake? Meanwhile, California has had a decadeslong aversion to properly clearing forests. The state’s leaders have long been in thrall to the belief that cutting down trees is somehow an offense against nature, even though thinning helps create healthier forests. Biomass has been allowed to build up, and it becomes the kindling for catastrophic fires. As Chuck DeVore of the Texas Public Policy Foundation points out, a report of the Western Governors’ Association warned of this effect more than a decade ago, noting that “over time the fire-prone forests that were not thinned, burn in uncharacteristically destructive wildfires.” In 2016, then-Gov. Jerry Brown actually vetoed a bill that unanimously passed the state Legislature to promote the clearing of trees dangerously close to power lines. There shouldn’t be any doubt that California, susceptible to drought through its history and whipped by fierce, dry winds this time of year, is always going to have a fire problem. But there also shouldn’t be any doubt that dealing with it this poorly is the result of a series of foolish, unrealistic policy choices. California’s overriding goal should have been safe, cheap and reliable power, a public good so basic that it’s easy to take for granted. The state’s focus on ideological fantasies has instead ensured it has none of the above. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review. ©2019 by King Features Synd., Inc.

I’m afraid this is traumatic for him. How can I get them to get along? — Devoted Pup Dad in Ohio DEAR PUP DAD: This new family can get along, but it will take a bit of work and some careful arrangements. Sparks is very young and sounds friendly and sociable, traits that will work in his favor in winning over your cats. “Gradual” is the watchword here. Sparks needs to be introduced in controlled situations and taken away if the cats begin to hiss or arch their backs. Early on you should: — Always supervise their interactions: Your puppy should not be left alone in a room with the cats; you need to monitor

all the pets’ behavior and remove Sparks if the cats prepare to show aggression. — Put up a baby gate: Keep Sparks out of rooms where the cats are, at least for now. The see-through gate also allows the cats to approach Sparks from a position where they feel more comfortable. — Give the cats an out: The cats will be less aggressive if they don’t feel that they’re being cornered by an overly friendly puppy. — Reduce antagonistic choke points in the house: Note areas where the cats and dog may cross paths and reduce the possibility that they will. Don’t place the puppy’s food bowl next to the cats’ bowls. Make sure the cats don’t have to walk past Sparks’ bed or kennel to get to their beds. Give it time, and your pets should eventually become tolerant of each other, if not completely friendly. Send your comments, questions or tips to ask@ pawscorner.com. ©2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

A salute to Veterans Day

By Angela shelf medearis kitchen diva My father is a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. His sacrifices for this country, along with thousands of other men and women, are recognized on Veterans Day. While Veterans Day is a well-known American holiday, there are a few misconceptions about it — like how it’s spelled or whom exactly it celebrates. To clear some of that up, here are the important facts you should know courtesy of the U.S. Department of Defense: Veterans Day does NOT have an apostrophe — Many people think it’s “Veteran’s Kendall Day,” Day” orMax “Veterans’ Lumber & Tin but they’re wrong. It’s a day for honoring all veterans — so no apostrophe needed. Veterans Day is NOT the same as Memorial Day — A lot of Americans get this confused, and we’ll be honest — it can be a little annoying to all of the living veterans out there. Memorial Day is a time to remember those who gave their lives for our country, particularly in battle or from wounds they suffered in battle. Veterans Day honors all of those who have served the country in war or peace — dead or alive — although it’s largely intended to thank living veterans for their sacrifices. Veterans Day began as Armistice Day — World War I officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. However, the fighting ended about seven months earlier when the Allies and Germany put into effect an armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. For that reason, Nov. 11, 1918, is largely considered the end of “the war to end all wars” and dubbed Armistice Day. In 1926, Congress officially recognized it as the end of the war, and in 1938, it became an official holiday, primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I. But then World War II and the Korean War happened, so on June 1, 1954, at the urging of veterans’ service organizations, Congress amended the commemoration yet again by changing the word “armistice” to “veterans,” so the day would honor Ameri-

can veterans of all wars. For a while, the date of Veterans Day was changed, too, and it confused everybody. While Veterans Day is always celebrated on Nov. 11, under the Uniform Holiday Bill signed by Congress in in 1968, the federal holiday can fall on other days, usually a Friday or Monday, depending on where it lands during the week. Our allies Great Britain, Canada and Australia also recognize their veterans on Nov. 11th; however, they call it “Remembrance Day.” We also have our military to thank for some unusual wartime contributions that are now part of our everyday life, including TV dinners, plastic cling film and these surprising culinary innovations: McDonald’s McRib Restructured meat was pioneered in the 1960s by the Army food lab in Natick, Massachusetts, to lower the military meat bill by gluing together cheap cuts to look like more expensive ones in the new MREs (Meals Ready to Eat). McDonald’s first used the technology in 1981 to create the McRib.

Participants in the men’s quartet, from left to right, were Ashton Albright, Matt Brotherton, Chris Henry and Jon Brotherton.

The children’s choir sang “It’s Gonna Rain, Rain, Rain,” from a production about Noah’s Arc that JPC children performed 40 years ago.

(Left) Jamar Tyree made a surprise appearance at the gala and sang Old Man River in honor of his former Greensboro College teacher Jon Brotherton. Tyree has sung for JPC worship services in the past. celebration of the 50th anniversary of the church, which was chartered in 1969. A final recognition of the occasion will be held during the Sunday worship service Nov. 24 and the community is invited to attend. “The gala wasn’t meant to be a worship service,” said Pleasants, anniversary chair. “It was a fun evening – more like musical theater with history.” Although not all the music was spiritual in nature, there was something about the entire atmosphere that seemed to lend itself to worship, as well as fellowship. The evening began with a sit-down supper prepared by the Congregational Life Committee and volunteers under the leadership of Teresa Griswold and Betty McRae. JPC Boy and Girl Scout troops served guests seated at round tables featuring the anniversary theme colors of blue, green and gold. After the meal, the musical history lesson began. The church started with an organizational meeting at the home of The Rev. and Mrs. Mac Foust. As interest in a local Presbyterian church grew, the group began meeting in the Jamestown Town Hall. “There was no choir,” Pleasants acknowledged. “Pearson Music Company loaned the church a spinet piano for three weeks

and Buffalo Presbyterian Church loaned us Magie Fishburne, who played the piano for us for five months.” Used hymnals were donated to the church and when the piano was returned to the music company, an electric organ borrowed from the Mayhew family took its place. “Pastor Foust often invited individuals from other churches to provide special music,” Pleasants said, “which meant there was a soloist, duet or quartet to enrich the worship service.” On cue, a men’s quartet featuring Ashton Albright, Matt and Jon Brotherton and Chris Henry from JPC took the stage to entertain with the song “Ol Buddha.” Originally sung by the Imperials, it was their biggest hit on Southern Gospel Radio. The evening continued with bits of the church’s musical history interspersed with performances by the Chancel, Handbell and Children’s choirs, a duet by former JPC members and sisters Dawn Kinney Johnson and Judy Kiser, piano soloist Christine Chiou, the Decided Praise Band, Greensboro College Chamber Singers, and operatic numbers by Kayla Brotherton. Although Jon Brotherton, JPC’s music director, was instrumental in helping produce the gala, the eve-

ning ended with a surprise recognition of him and his family for the service they have given to the church. “Jon has always brought us the quality of a downtown First Church,” Pleasants said. One of Jon’s former students from Greensboro College sang and Gonsiewski read a special letter from longtime friend Dr. Robert “Bob” Overman. Several members of the Greensboro Choral Society, which Jon conducts, honored him with special music. Also recognized by the church were Jon’s former students Henry and his wife Elena, JPC members who have been an integral part of the JPC music program, and Chiou, organist and pianist, who retired this year after playing at the church for 21 years. Guests left the event with more than memories, however. Each family received a special edition 50th Anniversary Book highlighting the growth of the church, along with personal stories from 90 current and former members, numerous photographs and recipes gleaned from two cookbooks the church has produced. “You cannot appreciate what you have today if you don’t know where you came from,” Pleasants said in an earlier interview. Which, after all, was what the gala celebration and its musical history lesson was all about.

continued from front Henning and Herring hope the restaurant will become the place to go after games at the area schools, and where their fellow Jamestown United Methodist Church members will head to for Sunday lunch. They want to be the place where kids come in wearing their mud-coated cleats. “We want to focus on the community,” Herring said last year, and “be part of making the community a better place. The rustic restaurant has seating for 80 people, including several outdoor patios. Future plans call for an outdoor fireplace by next fall. With only 18 parking spaces available, Henning and Herring have an agreement with the Jamestown Town Hall to use the lot behind that building. There is also parking on Teague Road, between Town Hall and Jamestown United Methodist Church. The restaurant’s menu can be found at www.blackpowdersmokehouse.com. The core menu includes pork shoulder, brisket, ribs, chicken, turkey and salmon, along with daily specials. For the first couple weeks the restaurant will be open from 10:30 a.m.8:30 p.m., or until the barbecue runs out.

They will start serving breakfast on Nov. 19 and the hours will change to 6:30 a.m.8:30 p.m. “You’re probably curious about the ‘run out’ part,” Henning said with a laugh. “Barbecue isn’t something you can cook quickly. We’ll cook a predetermined amount of meat everyday and when it’s gone … it’s gone.” Beer and wine will be served once the ABC permit is approved in a couple of weeks. When the partners started the project, they expected it would take three-four months to complete, but it took 11. They kept the portico from the original 1925 gas station and replaced tiles on the terra cotta roof. One thing they couldn’t save, however, were the old gas pumps. “We tried everything we could to save the pumps,” Henning said. “They were in really bad shape with lots of sharp edges. We still have them with the hopes of finding someone local to help make them safer.” The name Black Powder is a homage to the numerous gun factories that once populated the Jamestown area, leading to a

The gun makers in Jamestown and surrounding areas were considered some of the best in the South. ‘Black Powder’ is our tribute to those artisans who lived here many years ago. We are hoping to incorporate some of the history into the restaurant’s decor.” Henning has over 22 years experience in the business, including working with restaurants, hotels, country clubs, conference centers and large scale catering operations. Herring will head up the company’s catering business.

“Catering got us to where we are today,” Herring said. “We hope to continue to grow the catering business. This year we’ve catered nearly 40 weddings and numerous corporate events.” “We have been overwhelmed by the community’s reaction to the Smokehouse,” Henning said. “People stop in all the time to ask when we’re opening. We’re grateful for the excitement, but we also know it comes with high expectations.” The website sums it up. “The restaurant isn’t perfect, but we hope you enjoy it as much as we do. We’ll continue to add some finishing touches over the next few weeks. The most important part of the smokehouse, the smoker, is seasoned and ready so it’s time to serve some barbecue.”
