By CarOl BrOOKs freeLAnce Writer cab1hp@gmail.com The Historic Jamestown Society held its annual meeting Dec. 8 at Jamestown Friends Meeting. Returning members as well as new ones joined in the festivities, which included a reception following the meeting. Mendenhall Homeplace Director Shawn Rogers reported that considerable work has been done at the property this past year, much of it by volunteers. “I want to give all of you a heart-felt thank-you for everything you do,” Rogers said. “Every little bit makes a difference, especially for a small non-profit like ours.” He noted that siding has been repaired on the Madison Lindsay house through a grant from the Town of Jamestown for the town’s fiscal year 201819. Another grant from the Town for 2019-20 will be used to complete sev-

eral smaller projects. One such project is archives and collections storage, including cataloging software. A Marion Stedman Covington Foundation grant helped repair the sagging floor in the 1920s section of the bank barn. Rogers himself repaired railings on the porch of the Richard Mendenhall house. “It’s not just me,” Rogers said. “There are so many people behind the scenes. I just have the privilege to show it off.” He mentioned the Cookies with Santa and Candlelight Tour events that happened the previous day and how many volunteers devoted so many hours to make those events special to guests. Rogers was the guest speaker at the meeting and presented a history of some of the Mendenhall family. He is qualified to speak about the family because he is a descendent of Mary

For millions around the world, our image of Santa Claus is a jolly man in a sleigh pulled by “eight tiny reindeer.” That view came from Clement Clark Moore’s 1823 poem “A Visit from Saint Nicholas,” also known as “The Night Before Christ-

Volunteers are often the lifeline of an organization, preserving it for the future. The Jamestown Public Library is a good example of how volunteers have been instrumental in preserving the building in which it is housed and establishing a library to be enjoyed for generations. For more than three decades, the library has stood on the hill at the corner of Ragsdale Road and Main Street, serving Jamestown and surrounding communities. Although it has had some paid employees throughout the years, volunteers have been essential to maintaining its daily operations. Friends of the Library recently created a way to recognized volunteers who have gone above and beyond in their service to the library. On Dec. 6 the group named its first Honor Roll of Volunteers recipients – Alan Johnson and Joe and Lydia Watson.

Christmas cake

By angela sHelf medearis KitcHen diVA

My mother made a fruitcake every Christmas to give as a gift for my paternal grandmother. The cake was stored in a corner of the refrigerator for weeks, marinating in an alcoholinfused mixture. Even though I’m well known for my love of sweets, that green and red candied fruitstudded, boozy brown confection never tempted me. For a while, fruitcakes fell out of favor, but it seems that everything old is new again, because fruitcakes are making a comeback ... as energy fuel for hikers! “You’ve got a perfect food for a hiker who’s trying to go the distance,” said Brenda Braaten, a nutritionist who also bakes fruitcakes and owns Little Haven Hiker Services in Belden, California. “You’re close to the same calories per gram in a fruitcake compared to a Snickers bar or a trail bar, but you’re miles ahead on iron, magnesium, calcium,” she said. “The mineral content is higher.” Old fashioned as they are though, Christmas cakes are for those of us who love the traditional foods of the holidays every bit as much as the newly invented confections. And while it’s true that some fruit cakes are hard to love, others are a glamorous and — yes — delicious offering that reflects cherished customs and flavors that have been passed down for generations. The first Christmas cakes were created in Britain and began life as something else entirely. Around the 16th century, during the early days of Christmas, a porridge was made to which dried fruits were added. By the 1800s, with the availability of flour, eggs and sugar, that simple cereal treat transformed into something more sophisticated. Over time, bakers spun the recipes into light and dark cakes, full of dried and candied fruit, or versions containing only nuts. France’s interpretation of a Christmas cake was a fussy, beautiful Buche de Noel. The recipe differed from tradition because it didn’t contain fruit. Instead, a sponge cake filled with chocolate buttercream was rolled to look like a Yuletide log. It is still a scrumptious showstopper today.

In America, we have continued making these heritage recipes and added a few of our own. There is nothing that says holidays more than a striking Red Velvet Cake, or a Southern Lane Cake filled with candied fruit sandwiched between light fluffy layers of white cake, or a moist Apple Cake heady with spice, or your favorite variety of Coconut Cake A cake at Christmas is a treat worthy of the holiday, whether it’s an antique fruitcake recipe like the one created by Brenda Braaten, or more modern treats. Nothing says “celebration” like a slice of Christmas cake, the perfect holiday indulgence! BRENDA BRAATEN’S FRUITCAKE 8 ounces walnuts (2 cups) 8 ounces pecans (2 cups) 1/2 pound Brazil nuts (1 1/2 cups) 16 ounces pitted dates 15 ounces dried apricots 12 pitted prunes, halved 4 ounces mixed candied fruits (optional) 1/2 cup raisins 16 ounces maraschino cherries, drained (1 cup) 1 1/2 cup sifted unbleached flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 6 eggs 1 cup sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3/4 cup brandy 1. Heat oven to 300 F. Grease bottom and sides of a 9 by 5 by 3-inch loaf pan. Line with parchment paper.

2. Using a large bowl, combine the walnuts, pecans, Brazil nuts, dates, apricots, prunes, mixed candied fruits, raisins and the cherries. Sift flour, baking powder and salt over the nuts and fruits. Toss lightly to coat the fruit and nuts to prevent them from sinking to the bottom of the cake. 3. Beat eggs, sugar and vanilla until fluffy and light. Pour over nut and flour mixture, stirring gently to combine. 4. Fill prepared dish, pressing mixture firmly to keep its shape after baking. Bake for one hour. If fruits are browning too quickly, cover with foil. 5. Invert cake; peel off paper, turn right-side up, let stand on wire rack until cooled completely. When cool, pierce the cake at intervals with a fine skewer. Place the cake on a plate covered with cheesecloth. Pour the brandy over the top and sides. Let stand one hour. 6. Wrap the completely cold cake in the cheesecloth soaked in brandy, and again in foil, and store in an airtight container in a cool place for up to a month for a better flavor. Serves 6 to 8. Approximately 25-30 people, many who are also library volunteers, gathered to honor the first recipients of this special recognition. “I thanked them all and told them they were an inspiration to others to volunteer,” Metz said. Persons considered for the honor roll must contribute effort toward the library’s purposes and further the work and purposes of Friends of the Library. Recognition is given for

personal involvement, not monetary contribution. One of the criteria includes active involvement in service to the library during the past five years. Johnson and the Watsons not only helped the library at its beginning, but have continued to provide support. Their names have been added to a plaque that hangs in the main lobby of the library. Each year, new names of faithful volunteers will be added to the plaque. Recommendations can be made to Friends of the Library for consideration as recipients. Rogers has been director of the Mendenhall Homeplace since 2012. “The family goes back many generations in England,” Rogers said. “One family member thought they descended from a Russian nobleman! Of course, no one has been able to document that. “We do know that by the mid1600s, the Mendenhalls were living in a little village called Mildenhall, which was the original name, in Wiltshire, England. Their little estate was on Marriage Hill, which still exists. By 1683, a number of the children of Thomas and Joane Strode Mendenhall migrated to Pennsylvania and settled in the southeastern part of the state, just outside Philadelphia. “The immigrant that ties to our area was John Mildenhall (16591743),” Rogers said. John was the great grandfather of James Mendenhall who settled in what is now Jamestown, N.C. Many of the Mendenhall family took prominent positions in the formation of Guilford County. The males would be too tired to pull Santa’s sleigh for so long – but not the girls, whose extra weight acts as insulation, keeping them warm in their cold homes of Alaska, Canada, Scandinavia and Russia. Television cartoon depiction of reindeer and many of our decorations are wrong in showing thin creatures. They usually are stocky, have thick, big hooves and square – not red – noses. Regardless of if reindeer are male or female, it is interesting to note that the outer layer of fur on the beast is hollow. Air fills these hairs, making the reindeer bouyant, or able to float. Perhaps this makes them lighter-than-air and also able to fly. David Mikkelson, writing on the website Snopes, summed it up rather nicely: The way we see it, male reindeer retaining their antlers into late December is not nearly as unusual as a fellow who lives at the North Pole, spends the year making toys for millions of children all over the world, and manages to deliver all of them in a single evening. If Santa could develop a way to make reindeer fly, his coming up with a way to ensure that his bulls kept their antlers until late December must have been a piece of cake.” For those who prefer to continue thinking Santa’s reindeer are male, the answer is simple – forget science, the reindeer

on foggy nights. He was a character in a coloring book produced by the now-defunct Montgomery Ward department stores. Most of us have always supposed these beasts to be male, but scientific research over recent years has determined that all of Santa’s reindeer are probably – female! Think about it: A vixen is a woman with a temper. And, yes, that would make Rudolph a girl. Scientists, including those at the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, have studied reindeer and have come to the conclusion that male reindeer shed their antlers at the end of the mating season in early December, while females sport their thinner antlers throughout the winter. In order for a male to be one of Santa’s team, it must be castrated and, therefore, unable to shed its antlers. However, our vision of Santa doesn’t lend itself to this dark view of the jolly old elf. Reindeer (known in North America as caribou) are the only species of deer in which female have antlers. It is not impossible, however, for a male reindeer to still have his antlers on Christmas Eve, but it’s not typical. On the other hand, it has been proven that young male reindeer don’t shed their antlers until the spring, the same time as females. It could be that Santa’s team is made up of youngsters. are magical, just like the jolly ole fellow himself. Still not convinced? Santa doesn’t need female reindeer to ask for directions to all the new houses he must visit each year. These days he has GPS. For more information on reindeer, check out the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ FAQ at http://web.archive.org/ web/20050415075722/http://reindeer.salrm. uaf.edu/html/reinFAQ.html.

Why does Santa use reindeer? Real-life reindeer exhibit characteristics that make them perfectly suitable to lead Santa’s sleigh. They are speedy, have stamina and adapt well to the cold. Perhaps that’s why Clement Clark Moore choose them in his 1823 poem “A Visit from Saint Nicholas.” Before then, St. Nicholas was shown riding a horse or donkey or in a sleigh pulled by a horse. Reindeer speed has been clocked at as much as 50 miles per hour. That seems slow to cover the world, but I digress. The eyes of reindeer are special as well. They can see in the ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum, something humans can’t do. This helps them see when humans are snowblind. They also have a reflective tissue behind the retina that reflects light back through the retina, enhancing night vision. No wonder these extraordinary animals were chosen to pull Santa’s sleigh.

In 1978, the tournament expanded to eight teams with Ragsdale, High Point Andrews, High Point Central and Thomasville High School joining the original four. In 1979 and ’80, the tournament returned to its original schools before expanding back eight teams permanently in 1981. Each year, tournament proceeds are donated to charity and the participating schools. This year’s charity is Ready for School, Ready for Life. Ready for School, Ready for Life is a collaborative effort to build a connected, innovative system of care for Guilford County’s youngest children and their families. Its vision is that every child in Guilford County, born in 2021 and beyond, will enter kindergarten developmentally on track in five key areas: physical development, language and communication, social-emotional development, cognitive development and approaches to play and learning. For more information, visit www.getreadyguilford. org. Last year, the eight schools each received $10,000, meaning the tournament donated $80,000. Additionally, the Greensboro Sports Council has donated to the schools since 2008 and last year’s donation also totaled $80,000. Past tournament proceeds have gone to Backpack Beginnings, Greensboro Urban Ministries, Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test, the American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer, the Bryan Family YMCA, the Children’s Home Society, the Eastern Guilford High School Fund, the Joey Cheek Fund, North Carolina State Games, the Greensboro Aquatic Center’s ‘Learn to Swim’ program, The First Tee of the Triad, the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club and Youth Focus. The Bill Lee Scholarship is awarded to four HAECO Invitational student-athletes each year. The scholarship was created in memory of Lee, a Greensboro native and resident who was a major supporter of local sports. The Greensboro Sports Council established the scholarship following Lee’s death in 2001. Recipients are nominated by their schools. Each nomination is considered with the following criteria: 40 percent academic, 40 percent athletic and 20 percent civic. This year’s winners are Taneija Baldwin of Dudley, Jayla Harris of Northern Guilford, Carson Lomas of Northern Guilford and William (Cason) Pierce of Greensboro Day. Tickets to the HAECO invitational are available through the participating schools or at the Greensboro Coliseum Box Office. Tournament books containing tickets for all games are $15. Singlesession tickets are $7 for the opening and semi-final rounds and $10 for championship day. Single session tickets are only available at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center box office.

continued from front had secured a Granville Grant for over 204 acres in Jamestown, basically where High Point City Lake Park is now. By 1765 he had constructed a gristmill, saw mill and a substantial house. Remains of that house can be seen on the east side of the Penny Road bridge over the City Lake when lake levels are low. The Historic Jamestown Society has an original 1765 date stone from the original house. When James left for Georgia, his son George Mendenhall inherited the property and became the founder of what is now Jamestown. When George learned that the main thoroughfare, the Salisbury Road, was to be rerouted away from his home, now used as a sort of inn, he decided to relocate on the new road. While researching whom to purchase the land from, he learned that he had actually inherited the property along Federal Street, what is now Main Street, in Jamestown, from his father. George then laid out the town of Jamestown, naming it after his father. George’s son Nathan, brother of Richard, was an early member of the county Board of Commissioners and was a surveyor

charged with finding the exact geographic center of Guilford County. “It was basically in the middle of a marsh, a swamp, where Fisher Park is today,” Rogers said. “He took a little walk south and found a nice, high, flat land and arranged to purchase it and he and his brother, Dr. William Mendenhall, surveyed and laid out the town of Greensboro.” The Historic Jamestown Society now has several of Nathan’s surveyor’s chains and a leveling sextant. Richard was one of the founders of the North Carolina Manumission Society, founded in 1816, to abolish slavery through emancipation. George Cameron Mendenhall, Richard’s brother, married a woman who had inherited slaves. When that wife died, George remarried a woman who was firmly against slavery and worked to free the slaves. “Judith Mendenhall, Richard’s sister, in 1840, began what is believed to be the first female academy in Guilford County,” Rogers said. It was located near the old Quaker meeting house still standing in City Lake Park. Nereus Mendenhall, Richard’s

son, helped layout some of the routes of the railways in the state that are still in use today. Also a doctor, he was a teacher at New Garden Boarding School, now Guilford College. Many of his descendants have been associated with the school. Another son, Richard Junius Mendenhall, once a surveyor with Nereus, settled in Minnesota. “He is considered one of the pioneers of Minneapolis, Minn.,” Rogers said. Richard Junius opened one of the first banks in Minnesota. He later became one of the first regional florists in the United States. “He soon had two full city blocks of greenhouses,” Rogers added. “But he had a problem. He was in the middle of Minnesota. He had trouble regulating the temperatures in these glass boxes. So he asked for help from a young Swiss friend of his who happened to be an inventor, Dr. Albert Butz. The result of the efforts was the creation of the first thermostatically controlled heating system. “Richard Junius realized how important this was and made sure the entire system and components were patented in Dr. Butz’ name.” The men went all over the

country trying to get investors in the new company. “You might be interested to know that the company today is known as Honeywell,” Rogers said of the multinational company producing commercial and consumer products, engineering services and aerospace systems. Many members of the Mendenhall family have contributed to not only Guilford County history, but that of the country, education and freedom of slaves. It is a family to which Jamestown should be proud to be associated. In other business: Elected as Historic Jamestown Society officers for 2020 were president Shirley Haworth, vice president Jane Wade, secretary Rachel Orio and treasurer Shirley Spears. New board members with terms expiring in 2022 are Charlene Fischer, Sandra McGee, Julia Ebel, Katie Megel, and Shelley Lutzweiler. Roy Bradley will serve a term ending in 2020. Karen Walls will serve a term ending in 2021. These join returning board members Carol Hay, Annie Laura Perdue, Mary Ann Cherry and Elizabeth Greeson. Outgoing president Jane Payne will be an ex-officio member for one year.

elections too important to be left to voters By riCH lOWry

The Democrats believe that the 2020 election is too important to be left to the voters. It’s obvious that President Donald Trump withheld defense aid to Ukraine to pressure its president to commit to the investigations that he wanted, an improper use of his power that should rightly be the focus of congressional investigation and hearings. Where the Democrats have gotten tangled up is trying to find a justification that supports the enormous weight of impeaching and removing a president for the first time in our history. They’ve cycled through different arguments. First, Trump’s offense was said to be a quid pro quo, a phrase cast aside for supposedly being too Latin for the public to understand; then it was bribery, which has lost ground lately, presumably because of the inherent implausibility of the charge; now, the emphasis is on Trump’s invitation to the Ukrainians to “meddle” and “interfere” in our elections. This is posited to be an ongoing threat. Nancy Pelosi said in her statement calling on the House to draft articles of impeachment: “Our democracy is what is at stake. The president leaves us no choice but to act because he is trying to corrupt, once again, the election for his own benefit.” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler said on “Meet the Press” that Trump has to be impeached “for posing the considerable risk that he poses to the next election.” Asked if he thinks the 2020 election will be on the up and up, he said: “I don’t know. The president, based on his past performance, will do everything he

can to make it not a fair election.” The gravamen of this case is that the election is too crucial to allow the incumbent president of the United States, who is leading in key battleground states and has some significant chance of winning, to run. In fact, the integrity of the election is so at risk that the U.S. Senate should keep the public from rendering a judgment on Donald Trump’s first term, or deciding between him and, say, his nemesis Joe Biden. Of course, it’s possible to imagine a circumstance where a president would indeed present such a grave risk to our elections that he’d have to be removed. This is a reason that we have the impeachment process in the first place. But what’s the real harm that Trump’s foolhardy Ukraine adventure presented? The bottom line is that after tsk-tsking Trump for refusing to say in advance that he’d accept the outcome of the 2016 election, Democrats have steadfastly refused to truly accept the 2016 result (allegedly the work of the Russians) and now are signaling they won’t accept next year’s election either, should they lose again. Given their druthers, Trump wouldn’t be an option for the voters. They are rushing their impeachment, in part, because they know that as November 2020 approaches, it becomes steadily less tenable to portray the man who wants to run in an election as the threat to democracy and the people who want to stop him as its champions. With every day that passes, the Democrats risk creating the perception that they themselves are a threat to the 2020 election. Holiday celebrations hold dangers for pets By sam maZZOtta PAW’S corner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Please remind your readers to keep their pets away from Christmas decorations, wrapping paper and all the other shiny accoutrements of the holiday. Several years ago, I lost one of my little mutts after he ingested a glass ornament that I failed to notice in time. No one else should have to remember such a tragedy at the holidays. — Juliet in Reno, Nevada DEAR JULIET: I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your pet. Thank you for reminding readers to put in the extra effort to keep their dogs and cats safe this Christmas and New Year. It’s best to keep pets out of the room entirely when presents are being unwrapped. All the excitement can be stressful, and when the humans are dis-

tracted a pet may grab an ornament or a small toy and make off with it. Pick up all the debris before letting your pets back into the room. In the same vein, be very watchful of pets as the holiday feast is being prepared and served. Fatty foods can cause indigestion in pets, but other ingredients can be downright dangerous. Onions, garlic and raisins (or grapes) are poisonous to dogs and cats. So is chocolate. The extra spices in holiday foods can make them sick. And alcohol — from a spilled drink or bottle — is dangerous, too. Check on pets frequently throughout a celebration. If their behavior changes dramatically, or if they become lethargic or begin vomiting, contact the veterinarian immediately. Couch Theatre By amy andersOn It: Chapter 2 (R) — Derry, Maine, is once again under attack by the evil clown Pennywise, who is back to his old antics terrorizing the town’s children after a gang of kids — the Losers Club — thought that they had banished the dreaded monster for good. Twenty-seven years later, only one of the six has remained in Derry. Mike (Isaiah Mustafa), ever vigilant, studies the lore around the clown and deduces the only way to defeat Pennywise is for the now grownup members of the club (Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, Jay Ryan, James Ransome) to

Parents complain of cold classrooms in Guilford County Schools By ian mCdOWell contriButor

*Editor’s note: As this article was being prepared for publication, multiple parents were reporting that all Grimsley classrooms were without heat on Monday, Dec. 9. This article appeared in the Dec. 11 edition of YES! Weekly. “Some of our schools are going without heat because there’s no money in the budget,” wrote the parent of a student at Joyner Elementary last week. In a Facebook message, Jay Parr said that his daughter Miranda spent her entire school day on Monday, Dec. 2, wearing a heavy coat. Parr sent a link to a Dec. 3 public Facebook post by Kristin Cassell, who has children at Joyner Elementary and at Mendenhall Middle School. When contacted, Cassell gave permission to quote her post, which appears in its entirety below: It’s 37°F right now. My kid’s school has rooms with no heat. He attends a high-poverty, majority-minority (the student body is 23.6% white) Title I school. Here’s why this matters (aside from the fact that NO children should be learning in cold classrooms): Our schools are segregated. As soon as a school becomes more Black, white parents scoot out (my kid’s school actually should be much more white, but white parents in our area won’t send their children to our school). So many schools have facilities problems. That’s why I support Dr. Contreras’ new plan to

fix our schools. But it’s more than that. Families with resources who can do huge fundraisers are also concentrated in certain schools. A nearby elementary school makes $20-$30,000 on a fundraiser. We just had a big one and made almost $200. We need to hold County Commissioners (and state legislators) responsible for not fully funding our schools but we also have to realize that when our PTAs have to fill in the gaps, not all PTAs have access to the same resources. There are parents out there yelling against Dr. Contreras’ plan to fix our schools. I want to ask them the question I learned from Nikole Hannah-Jones: Whose children should we sacrifice? In her response to my Facebook query, Cassell wrote that both Joyner and Mendenhall had severe heating and air conditioning problems for a while. “The air-conditioning was out for fifthgrade graduation in the spring, and when we came back after the summer, my kid’s classroom was so hot that the teacher had to put three fans in there.” She also wrote that the son of a friend of hers, like Parr’s daughter, has been wearing his coat to class. Cassell praised the school’s principal, Denise Ebbs, who is the principal at Joyner. “She has reached out to the county to get things fixed, and I know they did come out one day this week to work on it.” She did not blame Ebbs for what she called “band-

aid fixes,” emphasizing that the problem was the outdated HVAC system. “The kids will be superhot for a while, and then someone will come out and figure out a way to make it work temporarily. Now they are cold, and someone came out and figured out a way to make it work temporarily.” A phone call to Nora Carr, chief of staff for Guilford County Schools, confirmed Cassell’s claims. “Joyner and Mendenhall did experience cold classrooms earlier this week,” said Carr on Thursday. “It was Monday and Tuesday at Joyner, and still an ongoing issue at Mendenhall. Both are sort of classic examples of these very outdated systems that continue to have issues. I think the reason it was so cold on Monday is that the boiler had kicked off and was actually blowing cold air into the school, and it took some repeated fixes before that problem was solved. They would reset it and start it again, and then it would switch off again.” Carr also said she had talked to the principal at Mendenhall. “She said that they do have some parts of the building that are cold and that students frequently wear hoodies and other clothing to deal with it as a result.” In a Friday afternoon phone

conversation, Ebbs was candid about the problems facing her school. “The biggest problem we have is the age of our equipment. Our building was built in 1955, and the heat and the air conditioning were retrofitted in the 1970s when it was remodeled. Our boiler dates from 1955, so it’s very old. It was working, and then it clicked off, and you don’t know it’s clicked off until it gets cold, and they come down and fix it, and then it clicks off again. It’s stayed on since Tuesday, so we’re hoping it’s fixed this time, but that’s the biggest issue we have with heating and air.” I asked her if she expected to have the opposite problem once the boiler has built up heat. “Correct. We’ll have rooms that get extremely hot. We tell our students all year long to wear layered clothes. That way, they can either add or take off because you don’t know from day to day how a classroom’s going to be when you walk in. So, we’re working with downtown every morning, when we have to call in and say hey, can you turn down the temperature in this or that room, and they turn it down for us. That will alleviate the problem for a while, but then it continues. It’s just a spiral of classrooms getting too hot or too cold.” I asked if there was funding for getting the HVAC system replaced. “I’ve been here 10 years and we’ve had this problem all that time. The only hope at this point,

I suspect, of getting it replaced is if funds are given from the county commissioners to allot money to pay for maintenance fees. And then, hopefully, the proposal that’s planned from the superintendent and cabinet for our facilities, that would help us tremendously, because we are one of the schools that are slated to have a new school built. My teachers laugh because we don’t even have enough electrical outlets, our school is so old, so we have surge protector sticks all over the place in order to be able to operate the electrical equipment that we have. The building was not constructed for the 21st century at all, but we do the best we can to make it do.” On Nov. 26, Guilford County Schools Superintendent Sharon Contreras shared a proposed master plan for the school system’s buildings with the school board and county commissioners. The $2 billion plan includes an estimated budget of $769.4 million for rebuilding schools, $423 million for full school renovations, and $254.5 million for constructing new ones. Joyner elementary would be one of the 22 schools rebuilt under this proposal. “We really need to support Dr. Contreras ‘s plan for fixing schools,” wrote Cassell in her Dec. 5 Facebook message.
