Planning Board denies Diamondback rezoning One year ago, the Jamestown Planning Board approved creating a new Planned Use Development zoning district for the town. On Nov. 23 the Board decided a PUD was not what it wanted for the Johnson property along Guilford College and Mackay roads. In a 6-1 vote, the Board rejected the rezoning request by Diamondback Investment Group from Agricultural to PUD for 2221 Guilford College Road (27.89 acres +/-), 5300 Mackay Road (30.70 acres +/-), 2207 Guilford College Road (384.49 acres +/-) and 5303 Mackay Road (0.6 acres +/-). This was the seventh, and shortest by far, meeting held to discuss the plans put forth by Diamondback for nearly 467 acres of primarily farmland to be called Castleton Village. The latest plans called for 1,269 units – down 343 from initial plans – including single family, townhomes and limited commercial. Board members expressed their thoughts about the project. “I don’t think it is a good fit for Jamestown,” said Richard Newbill.

Ed Stafford said he came to the meeting expecting to vote in favor of the PUD rezoning but changed his mind. “I really like the PUD concept,” said Stafford, a realtor. “It’s good to have mixed use. I love the overall concept. “I have gotten stuck on the lot size. I’d like to see 10-12,000 sq. ft. lots and a minimum of 1,600 sq. ft. homes. The homes and townhomes are a little too dense and a little too small. The overall caliber … is not up to par with what we set for Jamestown.” “The prospect of having the PUD so we could help build the nice, diverse type of PUD was a good idea, but this isn’t what I was looking for,” said Russ Walker. “The process of trying to work with the developer has not been pleasant.” Sherrie Richmond reminded the Board of the already overcrowded local schools which would be severely impacted with this type of development. Dennis Sholl has walked the property. “I’ve spent the last two weeks almost doing nothing but thinking about this,” Sholl said. “There is not enough diversity in the sizes [of lots and structures]. I like the idea of the PUD. I like the mixture. I’m not sure I want commercial development in there. PUD is a nice thing. This is not.”

Cedar trees along guilford College Road could become victims of development of the Johnson property. “I had hoped the [new] plan would have more diversity of housing options and in lot size,” said Sarah Glanville, board chair. “I think a PUD is the best option for this piece of land … but this isn’t the [right] plan.” She added that of all the people she had spoken with about the rezoning, only the veterans and representatives of the Vertical Church who spoke at the last meeting were in favor of it. Diamondback has offered a donation of 15-20 transitional homes for wounded warriors as well as property on

Jamestown hosts modified christmas on main By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com Yes, Virginia, Jamestown will still celebrate Christmas. Due to COVID19, however, the way the town celebrates will look much different this year. The parade has been canceled and Christmas on Main will be modified. But the Christmas on Main committee, Rotary Club and Jamestown Business Association are coordinating a special event Dec. 12 to help share the Christmas spirit with the community. At dusk, luminaries will line Main Street from Jamestown United Methodist Church past the elementary school. From 4-7 p.m., Santa and some of his elves will be greeting families at the drive-thru lane of Jamestown Elementary School,

where they will receive letters to Santa, along with food and monetary donations. The food and money raised will be given to Feeding Lisa’s Kids, a group dedicated to feeding children in need and their families in the greater High Point area. “The Jamestown Rotary Club is always happy to help our community celebrate the holiday season, said Cliff Paddock. “We hope our Santa drive-thru event will give families a chance to see Santa in a fun SEE MAIN, PAGe 2

Golf course revenue continues to rise By CAROL BROOkS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com October was another good month for the Jamestown Park Golf Course. Compared to 2019, revenue was up approximately 24 percent, due to increased green fees, cart rentals and golf shop sales. Rounds played were up 22 percent. Even though the grill is still operating as take-out only, revenues were higher than the previous year, $7,471 versus $6,540. Yearto-date, however is down approximately $3,000. There were 3,045 rounds of golf played in October compared to 2,502 last year. Year-to-date, there have been 13,444 rounds played versus 11,779 in 2019.

Expenditures, however, were also up approximately 24 percent compared to the previous year, seemingly negating the revenue increase. Jamestown Finance Director Judy Gallman said there were several reasons for this increase. Wages and benefits were up due to three payrolls in October 2020 compared to just two payrolls in October 2019. Payroll is every other Friday and there were five Fridays this year in October. Several yearly payouts were paid in October this year and in different months in 2019. Clubhouse rentals are still suspended due to Covid-19 restrictions on gatherings of large groups.

Area Deaths & Funerals Darrell Ronald Bishop Mr. Darrell Ronald Bishop, 83, resident of Jamestown, died November 23rd, 2020. He was born October 21, 1937, in Guilford County, a son to the late Logan and Pearl Klutz Bishop. As a resident of this area all his life, he graduated in 1956, from Allen Jay High School. After graduation Ron began what became a distinguished sales career in the textiles industry. This continued until 1975, when he and his brother, Gary, started High Point Fabrics and Supplies. Ron and his wife attended Jamestown Methodist Church. Ron was an adoring father, grandfather and husband. He loved people, sports, fine food and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Ron was also known for his quick wit, love of laughter and his generosity. Over the course of his life he anonymously supported numerous charitable organizations. In 1959, he married the former Ann Ratledge who survives him in death. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Cain, Doris Goodin and Betty Jean Miller; three brothers, Logan Bishop Jr, Bob Bishop and Gary Bishop. Also surviving are his two sons and daughter inlaws; Chris & Sloan Bishop; Shannon & Meredith Bishop; two granddaughters, Blythe Bishop and Blakey Devine; and sister, Phyllis Skeen. no relation to the property owners. Johnson added this would “allow them to be more efficient in their submittal timelines in the event that they withdraw the PUD request.” Contrary to earlier reports, no plans have been submitted for a singlefamily development, just a rezoning request. As for the one section of the property that was discovered to be under Greensboro jurisdiction, not Jamestown, Johnson anticipates “the developer would likely petition the General Assembly to “swap” it to Jamestown to clean up the sliver of land

at some point in the future.” Approximately 0.41 acres at 5230 Mackay Road lies within Greensboro’s jurisdiction. The Board welcomed Kenneth Clouser as the new audio/video operator, freeing up Johnson to handle only planning matters. A new camera brings a sharper video and the ability to pan and zoom. There was an audio glitch, however, just as the Board started to vote. “We think we’ve narrowed it down to our hardware and have been in touch with the company who helped install it,” Johnson said. “We hope to resolve it soon.”

As a backup plan, Diamondback has already submitted a second request for a rezoning from Agricultural to Single-Family Residential for the Johnson property. “We are not anticipating any deviation from the original PUD request at this time, so we will not bring any additional requests unless the original one is withdrawn,” said Planning Director Matthew Johnson,

Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might feel that you have all the answers right now. But it might be wise to listen to other ideas before you decide to close the lid on other possibilities.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) The strong, nurturing nature of the Lion comes through this week as you reach out to family and friends in need of your warm and loving support.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good time to reinforce relationships — family, friends, colleagues — that might have been overlooked in recent years.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Bovines give and expect loyalty, so it might not be easy to reconcile with someone you feel let you down. Why not ask a neutral party to set up a clearthe-air meeting?

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A relationship that has almost totally unraveled could be close to being restored with more effort on your part to be more patient and less judgmental.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Family situations continue to thrive. Business associations also improve. Some holiday plans might have to be shifted. Be flexible.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Anticipating the holidays with family and friends fuels your must-do Gemini energies. But try to pace yourself so you’ll be up for whatever comes along later.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your sense of fair play is strong this week, which can cause a problem with a longtime relationship. But in the end, you’ll know what decision to make.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) More background information might come through regarding a decision you expect to make. Be sure to check the source carefully before you move.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might not know all the facts behind an unwelcome development, so keep that Scorpion temper in check and resist lashing out at anyone.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Avoid any influence of negative energy in this week’s aspect by not allowing small problems to grow into large ones. Work them out immediately. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A friend might need advice on how to deal with a challenge to his or her moral values. And who better than you to give the honest answer? Good luck. ©2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Aromatic holiday gifts from the kitchen By angela shelf medearis the kitchen diva Gifts from the kitchen are easy and inexpensive to make and are always welcome during the holidays. Sachets and potpourri make beautiful and aromatic Christmas gifts. They can be fashioned from a variety of herbs and potpourri, and are simple to make. Bath sachets can be put directly into the tub or tied to the faucet so that the hot water passes through the herbal mixture as the bath is drawn. Sachet bags also may be placed inside clothes drawers, tucked into the corners of couches or armchairs, or placed inside of closets to freshen up a closed space. Any number of creative and inexpensive combinations may be used to make potpourri. Spices, flowers, essential oils, your favorite perfume, dried herbs and citrus peels all make a wonderful potpourri. Using a fixative — such as a tincture of benzoin, styrax or orris root — will extend the life of the perfume and ingredients. Most fixatives can be purchased at craft stores or ordered online. These easy-to-make recipes for bath sachets, potpourri and an herbal rubbing lotion will be fragrant reminders long after Christmas is over. Remember, gifts from the heart are part of the true meaning of Christmas. Have a happy holiday season! BATH SACHETS 2 cups dried herbs (lavender, sage, rosemary, pennyroyal, lemon verbena, chamomile, thyme or mint — alone or in any combination) 8 (4-inch) squares of cheesecloth or cotton (8 small decorative handkerchiefs also work well) 8 (12-inch) lengths of ribbon or lace

1. Place the herbs in a plastic bag. Roll a rolling pin back and forth over the herbs until they are slightly crushed. Place 1/4 cup of the dried herbs in the center of the cloth square. 2. Gather the square in a pouf and knot a piece of ribbon or lace around the neck of the pouf to secure the herbs. Make ribbon or lace into a bow, leaving the ends long enough to tie the bath sachet to a faucet. Makes 8 bath sachets. ROSE PETAL POTPOURRI 3 cups dried rose petals 2 cups dried lavender 1 cup dried lemon verbena 1 tablespoon dried lemon peel 1 tablespoon allspice 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1 tablespoon cloves 1. In a large jar, combine the rose petals and lavender. In a medium bowl, mix the lemon verbena, lemon peel, allspice, cinnamon and cloves. Howard, have new books. Anderson combines great food and North Carolina pottery with favorite recipes contributed by 24 North Carolina potters in “Kiln to Kitchen: Favorite Recipes from Beloved North Carolina Potters.” Vivian Howard’s “This Will Make It Taste Good: A New Path to Simple Cooking” would make an appreciated gift. Her earlier “A Chef’s Life” is a lasting classic and makes a good gift at any time. For Civil War buffs David Silkenat’s “Raising the White Flag: How Surrender Defined the American Civil War” looks at the war through the lens of numerous surrenders on both sides. Rachel Lance’s “In the Waves: My Quest to Solve the Mystery of a Civil War

Submarine” recounts her struggle to determine how and why the crew of the Confederate submarine HL Hunley died in Charleston harbor. There are two possibilities for sports fans. “Larry Miller Time: The Story of the Lost Legend Who Sparked the Tar Heel Dynasty” by Stephen Demorest is about one of Dean Smith’s earliest and best basketball recruits. In “Marching Toward Madness: How to Save the Games You Always Loved,” John LeBar and Allen Paul examine the risks of losing college sports as we know and love them. “UNC A to Z: What Every Tar Heel Needs to Know about the First State University” by Cecelia Moore and Nicholas Graham is a readable, entertaining, and authoritative encyclopedia

of information about everything UNC. “Fragile Democracy: The Struggle Over Race and Voting Rights in North Carolina” by James Leloudis and Robert Korstad tells the story of race and voting rights, from the end of the Civil War until the present day. “A Warren Court of Our Own” by Mark Davis compares the U.S. Supreme Court of Earl Warren with the N.C. Supreme Court led by Jim Exum. There are many more, but I promise, no more holiday book lists—for now.

D.G. Martin hosts “North Carolina Bookwatch,” Sunday 3:30 pm and Tuesday at 5:00 pm on UNCTV. The program also airs on the North Carolina Channel Tuesday at 8:00 pm and other times.
