I’ll be home for Christmas BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com It’s 2020 and like many of you, I’ll be home for Christmas, just as I have been most of this year. After all, the song says, “There’s no place like home for the holidays.” That’s not really unusual, but it will be different this year. It is not about going home, but staying home. The Centers for Disease Control have said the best way to stay safe and to protect others during this pandemic year is to limit gatherings. In other words, stay home. I am seeing the effects of this suggestion personally. A friend who usually comes from the mountains on Christmas Eve is staying home this year due to the

pandemic. My church has not been meeting but plans a Christmas Eve service in the courtyard outside. Reservations required. Since my usual plans will not happen this year, I plan to spend the day watching videos and movies. I’ll cook up something yummy and still have my Christmas meal, however. I’m making a list, and checking it twice. Gotta find out If I have all the ingredients. I asked Santa for a vaccine for Covid and he complied, but I am far down on the list of people who should get it first. As an essential worker, I hope Santa has had his shot. He’ll be alone on his journey, except for the reindeer, but he could catch the virus at some of the millions of homes where he stops. I hope he plans to wear a mask when

he drops in on all those houses. Maybe he should leave his gifts outside on the porch this year instead. Masking usually tells us who is naughty or nice but not this year. With fewer family members left in town and fewer gifts to buy each year, Christmas is not the same as it was when I was a child. I have fond memories of aunts, uncles and cousins gathering at either our house or one of my mother’s sisters’ houses each year. I remember one year one of my warm-weather cousin’s sons got to see his first white Christmas and did some sledding in my back yard. For several years, I was assigned to the “children’s table” with my similarly-aged cousins. I sent a few more Christmas cards this year, hoping to spread

Yearly ornaments are usually very popular but this year they come with a twist. One even has elves holding toilet paper and hand sanitizer. the Christmas spirit. I’ve even watched some Hallmark movies, even though we all know the plot and ending. If you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. So, I’ll be hold for Christmas this year. But remember, “Next year all our troubles will be out of sight” and “Someday soon we all will be together. Until then we’ll have to muddle through somehow. So, have yourself a merry little Christmas.”

Update: As I was preparing to write this article, I received a text inviting me to Christmas lunch with my cousin. As children, we were part of the large gathering each Christmas but that hasn’t happened in many years. It will be good to be with him this year, even if we do have to social distance and wear masks. This will be a special Christmas in a good way.

The Jamestown Town Council had a short agenda to cover for its last meeting of 2020 and is close to naming an interim town manager. Current Assistant Town Manager Matthew Johnson will basically serve as temporary interim manager until an interim or permanent manager is hired. Johnson will continue as Planning Director at this time. The Council has a candidate in mind for the interim position and approved a contract for that person at

Pet holiday safety tips

BY NORTHWOOD ANIMAL HOSPITAL IN HIGH POINT

Keeping your furry family members safe during the holidays can be a difficult task. The holidays can stir up excitement as you get ready for the activities, meals, and decorating that lies ahead. But, if you’re a pet owner, you should also consider how things like festive plants, lighting, or other changes around your house might affect the safety of your pets. Here are eight safety tips that keep your pet’s well-being in mind this holiday season. Candles — Burning candles should be placed on high shelves or mantels, out of your pet’s way there’s no telling where a wagging tail or curious cat may end up. Never leave candles unsupervised and keep your cat away from any areas with open flames or wax. Homes with fireplaces should use screens to avoid accidental burns. Identification tags and micro-

$60/hour with a minimum of 33 ½ hours per week plus mileage reimbursement for use of his personal vehicle. As of this writing, the candidate has not signed a contract and could not take over the duties until some time in January. On Dec. 15 the Council unanimously appointed Dee Fink, Wid Painter, Susan Joyner, Laura Gulledge and Pamaila Burgess to the new AARP Liveable Communities Committee. Rebecca Rayborn, who was instrumental in bringing this to the attention of the Town, will serve as council liaison. Committee members SEE MANAGER, PAGE 2

chips reunite families — Make sure your pet has proper identification with your current contact information. Particularly a microchip with upto-date, registered information. That way, if they do sneak out, they’re more likely to be returned to you. If your pet isn’t already microchipped, give our office a call at (336) 887-2606 to talk about the benefits of this simple procedure. Chocolate and baked good are an essential part of the holidays for many people, but it is toxic to dogs and cats. Although the toxicity can vary based on the type of chocolate, the size of your pet, and the amount they ate, it’s safer to consider all chocolate off-limits for pets. Baked goods should be kept out of

reach often

as well. Not only are they too rich for pets; an artificial sweetener often found in baked goods, candy, and chewing gum, xylitol, has been linked to liver failure and death in dogs. Turkey and turkey skin sometimes even in small amounts can cause a life-threatening condition in pets known as pancreatitis. Table scraps including gravy and meat fat also should be kept away from pets. Many foods that are healthy for people are poisonous to pets, including onions, raisins, and grapes. During the holidays, when our diets tend toward extrarich foods, table scraps can be especially fattening and hard for animals to digest and can cause pancreatitis. SEE PET, PAGE 2

We’ve all been inside for what seems like a long time but what could become a new Christmas tradition will take us outside on Christmas Eve, if only for 2 minutes. The idea is to ring a bell outside for 2 minutes to spread the Christmas spirit – and maybe help Santa along his way. Social media has been promoting the event, stating, “It has been an awful year and it would be a fantastic memory for everyone. Let’s end 2020 with a bit of magic, hope and togetherness.” The event apparently originated in Great Britain. Terri Niven, from the Central Belt in the UK created a Facebook page called Forth Valley Santa’s Xmas Eve Jingle. Only 48 hours later it gained 40,000 followers from around the world. She then renamed it Worldwide Santa’s Xmas Eve Jingle. Search for it on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ groups/2072320776225715. “After a tough year it

Part II of a series Many young people have a desire to one day find their soul mate, that special someone with whom they can share a lifetime together. After being introduced through mutual friends when they were in their 20s, Jessica and Brent Gentle (a 1994 Ragsdale graduate) fell in love and vowed to share their lives in 2003. Their relationship only deepened, however, when in July of 2020 Jessica gladly gave Brent one of her kidneys. “Brent’s mother had donated a kidney to him about six months before we met,” Jessica said. “It lasted 20 years before it began to fail.” A transplanted kidney’s lifespan is 15 to 20 years on average. When the couple realized Brent would need another kidney, Jessica’s first thought was to contact his three siblings to see if any of them matched. When none of them did, Jessica decided to be tested. “I had thought his siblings would be the most likely donors,” Jessica said. “I never really thought I would match and was amazed to find out that I did. Brent’s mother passed away with cancer before we found out I would be able to give him a kidney.

would be an amazing memory for the kids and communities,” Niven said. “For a short moment we will be smiling, kids will be laughing and if you cannot get out to ring a bell we are with you and you’ll hear us.” According to Metro.co.uk, Lauren Sinclair, a friend of Niven, learned about the bell ringing and decided to start a local Facebook event. “The goal was simple. Covid may have taken our 2020 but it can’t take Christmas,” Sinclair said. “No one can take our own doorsteps off us and the thought of hearing masses of bells ringing at 6 p.m. on. Christmas Eve is giving us all goose bumps.” Nearly 300,000 people have signed on to participate in the event but registration is not required. Some groups are using this as fundraisers. If you don’t have a bell to ring, jingle your keys, a wind chime or just sing your favorite Christmas carol. And if you can’t get outside, open a window and listen to your neighbors.

DONATION CONTINUED FROM FRONT “I never had any second thoughts about donating a kidney to Brent. He is not only my husband, but also the father of our kids. We both believe that the fact I was a match was a blessing from God. I am glad I was able to donate a kidney to him and to be his life partner.” The couple went to Duke Hospital in Durham for their surgeries. The transplant team worked with them to make sure they understood the procedure and to eliminate any fears. “I was nervous because of Covid,” Jessica said. “Duke was not allowing visitors, so on the day of the surgery we were dropped off at the door to the hospital.” The Gentles did have support at home. Jessica’s mother stayed with the cou-

ple’s 13- and 15-year-old daughters. When they were allowed one visitor each, Jessica’s dad and the best friend of Brent’s mother came to see them. Jessica and Brent were on the same floor following surgery. Since he was the first one up and walking, Brent was able to visit his wife in her room. “As hard as it was to go through the surgeries, when I look back it seems to have gone by so fast,” Jessica said. “It is amazing to give life to someone. We both consider it a miracle how God orchestrated everything in his timing. “I believe this has matured our daughters and brought our entire family closer together.” Jessica put something about the kidney transplant

on her Instagram site and Brent’s sister shared it. Danielle Cannon, another Ragsdale graduate who planned to donate a kidney to a stranger, saw the post and reached out to Jessica to find out personally what the experience was like. “She and I just connected,” Jessica said. Although one recipient was known and the other was not, Jessica and Danielle both have positive feelings about donating their kidneys. “Giving life or prolonging the life of another person is important,” Jessica said. Tinsel and other holiday decorations also can be tempting for pets to eat. Consuming them can cause intestinal blockages, sometimes requiring surgery. Breakable ornaments or decorations can cause injuries. Flowers and festive plants can result in an emergency veterinary visit if your pet gets hold of them. Amaryllis, mistletoe, balsam, pine, cedar, and holly are among the common holiday plants that can be dangerous and even poisonous to pets who decide to eat them. Poinsettias can be troublesome as well. All pets should have access to a comfortable, quiet place inside if they want to retreat. Make sure your pet has a room

Planning Board denied this request last month after several months of discussion. In the Manager’s Report, Johnson reminded Council that the winter retreat would be Jan. 22 at 9 a.m. at the clubhouse at the golf course. The Town is expecting the Lee Street house will be demolished after the first of the year. Also after the first of the year, bids will open for the new golf maintenance building. The expected completion of the East Main Street/Lydia sidewalk project is February 2021. Johnson noted that it is customary in December to determine which sealed minutes of Council meetings could become unsealed. This has been postponed until January. Councilmember Martha Wolfe noted that the meeting scheduled for Dec. 15 for the draft of the Jamestown Bypass Land Use Assessment has been rescheduled as a virtual meeting via Zoom for Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. This is presented by the City of High Point to determine the use for the new bypass, a portion of which abuts the Jamestown limits. Anyone interested must register for the meeting by visiting www.highpointnc.gov/VirtualPublicMeeting. Wolfe also mentioned that the Greensboro Y will establish an endowment fund honoring the late Kim McKone, long-time executive director of the Jamestown Y. The Town Hall will be closed Dec. 24-25 and 28 for Christmas, Jan. 1 for New Year’s and Jan. 18 for Martin Luther King Day. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 6:32 p.m. The next Town Council Meeting will be Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center at Town Hall.

will serve two-year terms. The goal of this committee is to provide feedback to the Council regarding ways to make the community more accessible for aging adults. Team members are expected to be advocates for positive change with respect to improving livability for all citizens. The Council also approved the job description for the Planner job description. This position was designated as Engineering Tech at the November Town Council meeting. Due to growth around the community, in anticipation of greater pressures on the Planning Department and the greater number of duties placed on Johnson, the Department’s single employee, there is a need for the addition of another planning staff person. This person would work with both the Planning and Public Services departments but would report to Johnson. The full job description and application can be found at www.jamestown-nc.gov/newsand-notices. Also unanimously approved was the NCDOT Title VI Non-Discrimination Policy. The policy states, “no person – on the grounds of race, color, national origin, limited English proficiency, income status, sex, age or disability – is excluded from participating in, denied the benefits of or otherwise subjected to discrimination under any NCDOT program.” The entire policy can be found at www.ncdot. gov›nondiscrimination-program. Compliance is required no later than Jan. 4, 2021. The Council set a date of Jan. 19 for a public hearing for the rezoning request for the Johnson property at 2221 Guilford College Road, 2207 Guilford College Road, 5300 Mackay Road and 5303 Mackay Road from Agricultural (AG) to Planned Unit Development (PUD). Stress-busting foods BY ANGELA SHELF MEDEARIS THE KITCHEN DIVA A few years ago, Dr. Mehmet Oz asked me to create a recipe containing foods that help to naturally reduce stress and to do a cooking demo on “The Dr. Oz Show.” I found that the following ingredients have stress-reducing properties: ∙ Red, Orange and Yellow Bell Peppers — These peppers contain vitamins A and C and folate, which help give you more energy and repair cell damage caused by stress. When under prolonged stress, the body gets depleted of vitamin C, an antioxidant that fights the free radicals that get released when you’re stressed. These free radicals have been shown to cause cancer. ∙ Turkey — An amino acid called L-tryptophan contained in turkey triggers the release of serotonin, which is a feel-good, muscle-relaxing brain chemical. L-tryptophan has a calming effect. Turkey also contains tyrosine, an amino acid that helps your brain produce the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine. Activating those chemicals helps your brain work faster and be more effective at handling complex mental problems. ∙ Spinach — Dark green vegetables are powerhouses of vitamins that help replenish our bodies in times of stress. Many dark green vegetables also contain potassium, which is good for our nerves and can calm them. ∙ Quinoa and Brown Rice — Quinoa is rich in vitamin B, which has a calming effect on the body and helps relieve feelings of stress and anxiety while enhancing your mood. Brown rice is a healthy carbohydrate and boosts serotonin levels, which has a calming, soothing effect. All whole grains contain B vitamins and fiber, and also supply serotonin-producing carbohydrates that do not spike blood sugar levels. When you eat a carbohydrate, your body sends an amino acid called tryptophan into the brain to trigger the manufacture of serotonin, a neu-

rotransmitter that makes you feel tranquil and better able to cope. ∙ Low-Fat Cheese, Greek Yogurt — The whey and protein in milk products like cheese and yogurt help your nerves stay healthy, stabilize your blood sugar, stops you from feeling those extreme highs and low when you eat sugar, and has been shown to decrease anxiety and frustration. When consumed over a period of time, the calcium in dairy also has been shown to calm muscles and help keep blood pressure in check. ∙ Avocado — The monounsaturated fats and potassium in avocados help lower blood pressure. Avocados have more potassium than bananas. Monounsaturated fat also helps keep receptors in the brain sensitive to mood-boosting serotonin. ∙ Basil — A great source of folate, which helps to repair cell damage caused by stress. This is the healthy, stress-reducing rice, or mixture of both recipe I created for “The Dr. Oz Show.” 1 cup low-fat Cheddar cheese Enjoy and relax! 2 large avocados, peeled and pits removed, sliced STRESS-BUSTING STUFFED 1/2 cup low-fat Greek yogurt BELL PEPPERS 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh basil leaves 8 red, yellow or orange bell peppers, or a mixture of all (about 4 pounds) 1. Heat oven to 375 F. Cut the peppers 2 tablespoon canola or olive oil, divided in half lengthwise, slicing from the stem 1 medium-sized yellow onion, chopped to the bottoms, leaving the stems intact. 4 garlic cloves, peeled and minced Remove the white pithy ribs near stem 1 teaspoon salt and down length of inside. Remove the 1 teaspoon ground black pepper ribs and seeds, and discard. Place the pep1 tablespoon chili powder pers in a shallow 13 x 9-inch baking dish. 1 tablespoon ground cumin Drizzle the peppers with 1 tablespoon of 16 ounces fresh Italian turkey sausage, the oil. Cover the dish with foil, and bake removed from casing, the peppers 15 to 20 minutes, until they or ground turkey start to soften. 1 (16 ounce) jar chunky salsa, 2. Meanwhile, heat the remaining 1 mild or hot tablespoon of the oil in a large skillet 2 cups fresh baby spinach, rinsed and over medium-high heat. Add the onion, chopped, or 1 (10-ounce) package garlic, salt, black pepper, chili powder chopped spinach, thawed and and cumin; cook until the vegetables are squeezed to remove moisture softened, about 3 minutes. Add the sau2 cups cooked quinoa or cooked brown sage or ground turkey, breaking it apart

with a fork and cooking until lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Add the salsa and spinach. Cook, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the cooked quinoa and/or brown rice. 3. Fill the pepper halves with the turkey mixture. Cover with foil. Bake 20-25 minutes until peppers are tender. Remove foil and sprinkle peppers with cheese. Return to oven; bake, uncovered, until cheese has melted. Top peppers with avocado slices, yogurt and basil. Makes 8 servings, 2 stuffed pepper halves per serving.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2 est of the great Carolina Tar Heel basketball players of all time. Playing for Coach Dean Smith in the 1960s, he helped create the coach’s legend by winning his first two ACC titles and an appearance in the NCAA national championship game. Miller was a two-time All American and was twice named ACC player of the Year. Miller grew up in Pennsylvania and was a record-setting and heavily recruited high school player. Duke and Carolina were contenders. Miller apparently found out that Duke basketball players came to Chapel Hill to party. Being a party loving young man, he chose to be

in Chapel Hill full time. Women loved Miller, and he loved them back. One of those women who swooned over him was a young girl named Nancy Curlee. Years later, long after she had married Demorest, they were driving near Catasauqua, Pennsylvania, where Miller was living. Nancy insisted they drop by Miller’s house. They found him working in his garden, built a friendship, and the new book is the result. Both Nancy and Stephen, who live in Hillsborough, are experienced writers who created content for television programs such as “The Guiding Light.” Stephen uses those story-
