Chick-fil-A coming to Grandover Village By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Chick-fil-A has announced plans to construct a restaurant on an outparcel in front of Publix at Grandover Village. The location should open in 2021 and construction is expected to begin early in January. This would be the first eating establishment to open in Grandover Village, which saw Publix

begin operations in November 2019. The design of the restaurant is expected to blend in with the existing buildings in Grandover Village as well as neighboring Koury Corporation developments such as Millis on Main and 8 West apartments and Grandover Resort. Koury is the developer of Grandover Village. Known for it’s “Eat Mor Chikin” slogan using a cow, Chick-fil-A is one of the larg-

est American fast food restaurant chains and the largest whose specialty is chicken sandwiches, made with breaded, boneless chicken breast served between two buttered buns. It was founded as the Dwarf Grill in 1946, later changing the name to Dwarf

House and, finally, Chick-fil-A in 1967. Its headquarters is in College Park, Ga. Chick-fil-A is open MondaySaturday. Founder Truett Cathy made the decision to close on Sundays in 1946 when he opened the Dwarf Grill. Having worked seven days a week in restaurants open 24 hours, Truett saw the importance of closing on Sundays so that he and his employees could set aside one day to rest and worship if they choose – a prac-

tice the restaurant upholds today. The capital “A” in the logo means the restaurant, and its products, are grade A top quality. In related news, the Alamance County Board of Commissioners voted last month to approve $390,000 in cash incentives to bring a Chick-fil-A distribution center to Mebane, which had earlier approved a similar $390,000 incentive package. It is not known at this time if Chick-fil-A has picked Mebane.

The other was UNC-Charlotte and Asheville hospitals. Spangler was born with only one kidney, a fact his parents learned following a bicycle accident he had at age 5. “Doctors told them I would need a transplant by age 10, then predicted I would need it during my teenage years,” the 1995 Ragsdale graduate explained. By the time he was 18, the prognosis had changed to “at some point in his life.” Spangler feels that a good diet and exercise extended the life of his one kidney. Other than the kidney’s decreasing function, he had no other health problems. Before he went on dialysis, he was biking with his daughters five-six miles a couple of times a week. “I never slowed down,” he said. “But once I had the transplant, peo-

Golf course revenue continues to rise By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Covid-19 doesn’t stop avid golfers, especially in good weather. Since there were only four bad weather days, November was another good month for the Jamestown Park Golf Course. Compared to 2019, revenue was up approximately 90 percent, due to increased green fees, cart rentals, driving range fees, grill revenues and golf shop sales. Rounds played were up 78 percent, 2,221 compared to 1,248 in November 2019. Year-to-date rounds played are also up. Greens fees increased

from $19,665 in November 2019 to $41,742 this November. Cart rental fees nearly doubled. Even though the grill is still operating as takeout only, revenues were higher than the previous year, $6,168 versus $4,816. Year-to-date, however is down approximately $5,700. Expenditures were down approximately 3.7 percent compared to the previous year. Net loss for November 2020 was $17,417 compared to a net loss of $58,322 in November 2019. Clubhouse rentals for gatherings of large groups are still suspended due to Covid-19 restrictions.

ple told me they could see a difference in my appearance.” Besides his aunt, no other family member was a match as an organ donor. Ironically, his wife Melissa, whom Spangler married in 2007, later tested and did match her husband. Spangler did not want her to donate a kidney, however, because the couple had two very young children at the time. “I worried that something could happen to both of us and leave our girls without parents,” Spangler said. Spangler was told that a kidney from a living donor would last longer. Because this was not available when he most needed it, he volunteered to participate in a longevity study. “I was matched the very best for longevity reasons,” Spangler said. “I have a checkup every six months for the study.” SEE dONOR, PAGe 2

Open your doors on New Year’s Eve By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com Celebrating with a large crowd on New Year’s Eve is probably out this year, so what other way can you recognize the ringing in of a new – hopefully better – year? In Ireland and several other countries, people open their back doors just before midnight to let out the old year. Then they quickly open their front doors to let in the new year. Some cultures add opening windows as well and this year, even pet doors and garage doors should probably be included as well as any shed doors. Doors and windows don’t have to stay open long due to the cold air.

Any guests you might have that night should be asked to enter through the front door and exit through the back, bringing good luck to the family. Hispanic cultures throw a pail of water through the front door to wash away all the bad and start over. Out with the old, in with the new. Another Irish tradition is, if there had been a death in the family that year, to leave the front door unlocked to make it easy for the spirit of the loved one to return home. Making as much noise as possible at midnight will help to usher out any evil spirits that may be lingering in your house or life. SEE NEW, PAGe 2

rudolph’s little brother I know Rudolph’s little brother. And now that Rudolph and the other reindeer are safely back at the North Pole, I can tell you the mostly unknown story of where the Rudolph tale came from and why that story may tug at your heartstrings more than other holiday stories. I have known for years that By d.G. MARTIN Robert May, father ONe ON ONe of my law school classmate Chris, wrote the book about Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. But I did not know the details. Last week Chris gathered some details and shared them with me. He wrote, “I grew up as the younger brother of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, a character that my father, Robert L. Jason Spangler, owner of Budget Printing in Jamestown, knows what it means to be on the receiving end of a kidney transplant. On July 4, 2017, he received a kidney from a deceased donor during surgery at Duke Hospital. He had been seeking a living donor, but every avenue of that route seemed to close. His aunt proved to be a good match and was prepared to give, but later developed health issues that would not permit her donation. A young girl whose father had died of kidney failure wanted to donate, but was not a match. A friend volunteered to give Spangler a kidney, but likewise did not match. “He was willing to go on a pairdonor list,” Spangler said. “He would give his kidney to someone else, who in turn would have a donor that matched me. I had already been on dialysis for about a year by that time and could have to wait up to two years to get a match that way.” As Spangler’s kidney got progressively worse, he had been forced to go on peritoneal dialysis eight hours each day. Although it was done at home during the night, Spangler had hoped he would never have to go on dialysis. “It is hard to sleep and you have to be very careful to tend to the wound site,” Spangler explained. “I had been on a waiting list since Nov. 6, 2009, and at this point I had to go back on the active transplant list. You need less than 20 percent function in your kidneys to get on the list.” Spangler was on two waiting lists

continued from front Anyone can be an organ donor There are thousands of people who face the challenge of needing a transplant every year. As they struggled to find a compatible donor, it is clear that being listed in a common pool is one of the best ways to find help. Modern computer technology can be used to find matches. The National Kidney Registry was founded to make finding qualified kidney donors more possible. It provides the best chance of safely finding a well-matched donor, which increases graft survival and is correlated with more kidney life years. The organization’s website states that patient outcomes from transplants facilitated by the National Kidney Registry exceed the average U.S. living donor transplant outcomes. It should be noted that kidney donation is major surgery involving: • Medical tests, which will require at least one full day at the hospital. • 1-3 days in the hospital after surgery.

• Typically 2-4 weeks off work for recovery. If you are not a match for a loved one who needs a kidney, you can become part of a kidney transplant chain. This facilitates up to four transplants, and each donor in that chain is an integral link to helping every patient get a compatible kidney. Each donor is a unique match for patients in the system, and by being a part of a chain makes not just one, but potentially many transplants possible. Check the National Kidney Foundation website for extensive information about being a donor. If being a living donor is not possible, anyone can become an organ donor upon his or her passing. The easiest way is to sign up by having a heart placed on your driver’s license at the DMV. That lets people know your intensions in case of an accident. It also is important that your loved ones know about your decision to save lives through organ, eye and tissue donation.

I popped into the world in 1943, Rudolph was already four years old.” The storybook Rudolph was rejected by his peers because he looked different from them and didn’t quite fit in. Chris explains, “One day he is blessed when Santa Claus realizes that Rudolph’s apparent infirmity would be invaluable in helping to guide his sleigh on even the foggiest of nights. The odd little guy whose difference made him an outcast suddenly became a hero!” Chris says that Rudolph was modelled on his father’s life. “He grew up in New York as a smart little ethnic Jew who didn’t quite fit in. Part of the problem was that he was, at least early on, quite small.” He weighed less than 100 pounds until he was a high school senior. “Dad’s life in some ways resembled Rudolph’s in terms of his growing up as a sort of underdog, when and how did he finally get ‘discovered’ by Santa and suddenly become a much more accepted hero.” After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth in 1926, Robert worked in advertising for several large catalogue firms. At Montgomery Ward in 1939, he was asked to create a children’s

book to give to customers. Chris explains that Robert’s four-year-old daughter, Barbara, helped. “Dad would read her passages and then gauge her reaction to different word selections.” Montgomery Ward published and gave away 2.4 million soft cover copies of the Rudolph book in 1939 and another 3.6 million in 1946. The company held the copyright. So at first Robert got no money from the project. “But that didn’t really matter to him,” Chris says, “And this gets to the heart of what I want to say about my Dad, something that I deeply admire him for. His own childhood experiences, coupled with the then state of his life, made it easy for him to identify with the character he was bringing into the world.” Chris says his dad sought to convey a “message of hope,” to tell the story of “an underdog” who was “yet triumphant in the end.” He hoped that children who heard or read the story of Rudolph would, in his words, be inspired by “the little deer who started out life as a loser, just as I did.” If there is a message in Rudolph, Chris said, it is that “tolerance and perseverance can overcome

adversity. It is a story of acceptance.” Rudolph’s fame erased whatever doubts his dad may have had about himself. “In this way, what he got out of Rudolph was far more valuable than money, something that money could never buy.” “But for Dad, it was never about the money. What mattered was that every December, he could literally dress up and step out into the world again as the proud father of Rudolph. Rudolph’s success never turned his head. He was and remained a humble man to the very end. I think he saw Rudolph as a blessing, rather than as something he could take full credit for.” Note: Chris tells his dad’s story in more detail on a new podcast available at: https://irregularpeople. show And the complete original manuscript can be read at : https://www.npr. org/2013/12/25/256579598/ writing-rudolph-the-original-red-nosed-manuscript D.G. continued from front Apparently the Devil hates noise. Who will be the first person through your door on Jan. 1? In some countries, if a dark, handsome man was first through the door it would signify good luck for the coming year, and if he was carrying salt, coal and bread, in the new year the household would have enough to eat (bread), money (salt) and be warm (coal). Don’t let a woman be the first through your door, however. That would mean bad luck, especially if it was a young,

red-haired woman. These two traditions are often called first-footing. In Sweden, as expected, they prefer the first-foot man to be fairskinned and blond. In the United States, we eat cabbage or greens and black-eyed peas for good luck in the new year. We really need to do the door thing this year and get rid of 2020! Here’s hoping for a healthy and prosperous 2021.
