Fresh Market wins local incentives

The incentives from Greensboro were to keep the corporate headquarters in downtown Greensboro with High Point just designating Guilford County.

City councils of both municipalities met in a joint open session at the Guilford Technical Community College Center for Advanced Manufacturing on Nov. 21 and approved the incentives for the gourmet grocery franchise. The Guilford County Board of Commissioners approved the measure the same evening, offering an incentive of $106,600.

Governor Roy Cooper issued a press release applauding the votes.

“We’re proud that the

Preliminary P&R plan revealed

That is a question under review by the McAdams Company, a Durham-based civil engineering consulting, land planning, surveying, stormwater management and construction administration firm. The findings will be used to create a 10-year plan for the town staff.

Nick Lowe, of McAdams, presented a Jamestown Parks and Recreation plan to the Town Council on Nov. 19, following a presentation at a joint Parks & Recreation Committee/Steering Committee meeting earlier in the day.

“The main reason to do a comprehensive parks and recreation plan is to get money for parks,” Lowe said.

“One of the requirements for Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grants in North Carolina is a comprehensive plan.

“We’ll gather all this data and put it into an action plan to help you make decisions on what projects to do or what opportunities to take.”

Lowe’s company had several goals in mind as members looked at Jamestown’s parks: identify and resolve gaps and deficiencies, catalog community needs and wants, generate populationbased goals for new parkland, trails and more, and prioritize goals and objectives for a year planning horizon.

They compare Jamestown’s data with that of similar-sized towns and what those towns have done.

Engaging the community and staff are top priorities for McAdams.

“We’ll ask the public what they want to help guide their decisions,” Lowe said.

the existing parks and what should be added. The town also met with the YMCA, Jamestown Youth League and soccer programs to learn how these organizations used the parks and what was needed.

Of the respondents, 75 percent agreed that public parks add to the quality of life in the community.

The community’s top reason to visit one of the parks was that they are great places for community events in relaxing and peaceful family-friendly environments. Community wishes for the parks included a splash pad, playground, natural surface trail, 5-mile fitness loop and paved greenways.

As for program needs, outdoor music and movies was on everyone’s wish list, followed by outdoor fitness/ wellness classes and summer camps/ afterschool programs.

All in all, McAdams found seven areas that the company considered high priority investments for the entire community: fitness walking loops, dog park, senior center, greenway/trail system, natural trails, indoor fitness/exercise facilities, community

gardens and water access.

Priorities for youth programs were outdoor music/concerts/movies, fitness and wellness programs, special events/family festivals, outdoor adventure programs and swimming.

McAdams also looked at the breakdown of age groups in Jamestown, the largest being ages 30-64 years old at 45 percent, followed by ages 65 and above (21 percent), under 18 (20 percent) and ages 18-29 (14 percent.)

The company found 41 percent of the population with a household income of $25,000 to $74,999, 28 percent had income of $75,000 to $149,999 and 15 percent with an income of $150,000 or more. Less than $25,000 was earned by 16 percent of the households.

As for which sport interested Jamestown residents the most, fitness walking came in at 32.1 percent, swimming at 21.1 percent, jogging at 15.6 percent, hiking at 14.6 percent and weightlifting at 13.3 percent.

Stories can be priceless gifts Gift ideas for the job seeker

There are some things on which you simply cannot put a value. Often, some of the most treasured are family stories.

“They are priceless gifts,” local author Julia Ebel said.

Ebel is passionate about the importance of sharing stories of the past and present now so they will not be lost to the future.

“Every family has stories,” she said.

“Some get told, others do not. Sometimes people don’t think they are important or that nobody cares. Although they might not care at any given moment, farther down the road they will.”

Ebel recalls hearing her grandmother talk about taking a calf for a walk and it running away. She can still hear her grandmother’s laughter when she told about that experience, and the incident Julia Ebel is passionate about keeping her family stories alive and enjoys see stories, page 3 helping others do the same.

Christmas can be a depressing time for someone who is looking for a job.

With business closings and layoffs happening on a regular basis, all many people want is employment. At this time of the year, it’s hard to keep spirits up when income is down.

Obituaries Ardith Black Dillon Jamestown – Ardith Lou Black Dillon, age 82, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at Forsyth Medical Center.

An inurnment service will be held at a later date in West Virginia.

She was a native of McDunn, WV, and a daughter of the late William Lee Black and the late Lillie Virginia Campbell Black.

In addition to her parents, her husband Jack Ray Dillon preceded her in death in 2003.

Mrs. Dillon is survived by her son, Keith Dillon of the home; a grandson, William Dillon of Morgantown, WV; one brother, Ralph Black of High Point; and three sisters, Virginia Pugh of Malabar, FL, Joann Collins of Powelton, WV, and Jean Lake of Fairfield, OH. Kathy Lynn Pope

Kathy Lynn Pope, 67, died at Beacon Place Hospice Home in Greensboro, NC on November 26, 2019.

She was born on August 10, 1952 in Fort Thomas, KY, to the late Donald Keith Dudderar and Geraldine Senour Dudderar.

Kathy was a proud graduate from Highlands High School and the University of Kentucky. She later married Richard Tilden Pope on October 8, 1977. In 1995, they moved to Jamestown, NC with their four children.

Kathy was thoughtful and loving, often putting others’ needs before her own. Her smile was warm and welcoming to everyone she met. Family was the joy of her life, along with her faith in the Lord. During her lifetime, Kathy cared for a wide variety of pets and was a lover of all animals.

Kathy is survived by her two daughters, Kelly Lynn Sitton (husband Evan) of Durham, NC and Martha Meyer Pope of Greensboro, NC; her two sons, Kyle Tilden Pope (wife Samia) of Waxhaw, NC and Wesley Senour Pope (wife Lauren) of Pineville, NC; and six grandchildren, with one on the way. Kathy was preceded in death by her younger brother, Douglas Dudderar and her older sister, Donna Jo Crooks.

A visitation will be held at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home on West Gate City Boulevard in Greensboro on Monday, December 2, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 PM. Ask me for a few memories of Christmases past, and I instantly recall my dad on a ladder stapling multicolor strings of lights to the eaves of our house. Mom festooned the interior with swags of evergreen and fresh eucalyptus (we lived in Northern California) with gilded angels and shiny ornaments. Although my brothers and I decorated cookies and set up the manger scene, it was my folks who primarily created the holiday magic around our place.

In today’s more relaxed style, why not bring the kids into the center of holiday decorating with you, and make the coming month a do-together season of creativity, entertaining and giving?

To get kids started, here’s a whimsical centerpiece that combines a variety of objects to tell a story or suggest a holiday wintry theme to adorn a dining-room table or mantel. Look for a clear glass hurricane or a clear glass wide vase you may have tucked away in your storage closet. Then choose small holiday items and images that express the way you celebrate the season, along with nature finds.

Then bring out stored ornaments, mini strings of battery-operated lights or candles.

Here’s the stuff you need for each arrangement: — one tall and wide (about 12 inches by 5 inches) clear glass hurricane shade, a similar size plain, clear glass vase, or a glass chimney tube (available at craft and discount stores) — a tray, a large round plate or a wide, shallow bowl for the base — small keepsake holiday or themed items, toys, artificial greens or nature finds, such as mini pinecones and moss Here’s the fun: Arrange holiday-themed items in the center of the base, then place

For example: 1. Set a miniature decorative pine tree with tiny decorations dusted with snow in the middle. Around the outside, create a village scene with mini houses and figurines from your kids’ toy bins or your ornament collection.

2. School-age kids might enjoy decorating the glass by painting designs with permanent paint pens or acrylic paint in squeeze bottles.

3. Set a pillar candle inside by itself and let the light sparkle through colorful flat-sided marbles that you glue randomly around the outside of the glass shade.

(Use thick, quick-setting glue for best results.) When the candle glows at mealtime, it will remind your child that he or she was the one who placed the marbles just so!

Southwest Guilford Cowboys season opener

The Southwest Guilford Cowboys hosted the Falcons of Southeast Guilford in their home opener of the 20192020 season.

The Falcons came into tonight’s tilt looking for their first win on the young season, while the hosting Cowboys hoped to build off of their convincing defensive effort from Friday evening.

Both teams came out and matched each other shot for shot. After trading baskets for the first several possessions it was 8-8. The Cowboys started to wake up from their fog and ended the opening stanza on 11-2 run as the first quarter closed at 19-10.

The second frame had the Cowboys start to play more effective defense which led to transition baskets and

the lead expanded until the first half closed with the Cowboys up 46-21.

The Falcons did a good job of slowing the Cowboys down and not letting the game from getting out of hand as the second half had both teams trade small spurts and runs. By the time the third frame closed it was 68-41.

The final frame was more of the same back and forth and the game closed with Cowboys winning 82-52.

The Falcons were paced by Zach Friday with 18 and Trajan Green with 13 points. The Cowboys were led by Bryce Causey with 27 and Jeremy Mull with 22 points. Southwest moves to 2-0 on the young season and plays next on Saturday afternoon against Montgomery Central at 12:30 in the Bobby Martin Classic at RJ Reynolds.

The Cowboys hit the road for a non-conference tilt against the Timberwolves of Montgomery Central High School. This contest was the first game of the afternoon in the Bobby Martin Classic held at RJ Reynolds High School in Winston Salem.

The Timberwolves are coming off a tough loss against Concord while the Cowboys are coming off another strong victory over Southeast Guilford. Who could shake off the turkey and stuffing faster on this dark and damp Saturday afternoon?

Give gift cards to fast food restaurants or coffee shops. Or a coffee maker and gourmet coffees for home use along with a travel coffee mug.

Job leads can be found in business and trade publications. Give a year’s subscription to a magazine, online job bank or even the local newspaper.

Business cards are one of the first things job coaches or clubs insist on. It’s probably best to ask the recipient exactly what is needed on the card rather than have it

Since the incentives announcement, the Fresh Market has announced it has chosen the Wells Fargo Tower in downtown Greensboro for its new corporate headquarters, something it obviously had in its sights before the joint meeting.

For its part, the Fresh Market must keep the current 248 jobs at the Greensboro locations and create 53 new jobs.

“Greensboro is our home,” said Fresh Market CEO Larry Appel. “Our hope is to remain here and grow here.”

Greensboro council members voted 7-0 for the incentives and High Point voted 5-1. The no vote came because of the language of the incentive.

“I love the Fresh Market but I’m having a little bit of a hard time without having an actual physical presence in High Point,” said Councilmember Monica Peters.

The Fresh Market was founded in Greensboro in 1982 and has expanded to 160 stores in 22 states along the East Coast, including the two Greensboro locations and one in Winston-Salem. High Point’s Fresh Market closed several years ago. The company is looking to expand their Guilford County stores.

When development was announced on the Grandover Village Shopping Center, speculation arose that either the Fresh Market or Trader Joe’s would locate there, however Publix recently opened in the shopping center.

Collect recipes from family members and put them into a book. The task can be as unassuming as punching holes in them to clip into a notebook, typing them and attaching together with a spiral binding, or adding pictures with the recipes. Be sure to tell who gave you the recipe and perhaps jot down a memory associated with it. Share the recipes with other members of the family.

Preserving stories can be as simple or elaborate as you want it to be. But while you are gathering family stories this holiday season, consider creating copies of everything you learn to share as gifts during the next one.

Written words in the form or stories, poetry or letters are always a good way to preserve family memories. But family stories can also be shared through recipes, art, photography, quilts and plants. Recording just a few facts about these in a notebook or journal ensures the family history behind each can continue.

“We are more caring when we can look at the past and the lessons those before us learned,” Ebel said. “It gives us a sense of belonging to the family – a sense of our roots.

“If we are not rooted we can be blow away.”

Upcoming family holiday activities offer a wonderful opportunity to gather stories. Jot down bits of conversations as family members reminisce, or record those conversations.

Take pictures. Don’t leave them on a computer for others to guess about their content. They are best preserved in a scrapbook along with the date the photograph was made and who

Although the book is a work of fiction, research about the town in which her grandmother was raised and families from that area provided many factual details she could add to the story.

“That experience opened up the significance of telling family stories,” Ebel said. “My grandmother shared a simple story with me as a child. It has shaped much of what I have done with my writing and my focus on sharing stories with others. I started with what I knew, did research and built on it with imagination.”

Ebel is quick to note, however, that stories do not have to be written into books or memoirs.

“I am not sure some families would read something like that,” she said.

“It could say too much. Stories come in a lot of different forms and there are different ways to share them.

Life experiences shared can become stories.

“I remember making mints with my grandmother and as we worked I

McAdams looked at existing conditions in the town’s parks and found the finishes, fixtures and materials are high quality and well maintained. However, some amenities, including the playgrounds, appear to be outdated.

Landscaped areas are well maintained but paths and sidewalks at the golf course, sports complex and other areas are showing wear and tear.

What are the next steps toward a new Parks and Recreation Plan for Jamestown?

In January, McAdams will have a draft of recommendations for park improvements and concept alternatives for Jamestown Park. They will then hold a public design workshop and present recommendations that come out of the workshop to the Town Council and the public.

I don’t want to get a gift that everyone else is buying, so what are the most popular pet items right now? That way I can hopefully avoid a duplicate gift. — Cheri in Somerville, Massachusetts DEAR CHERI: If the item really is popular, I bet people won’t mind duplicate gifts — dog booties come to mind as items that wear out quickly in the winter and are expensive to replace.

For those not in the know, a Yankee swap (known as a Santa swap in other parts of the country) is a group gift-giving event where participants each bring a gift, then draw numbers to take turns

picking a gift from somebody else — or opt to swap their gift for another gift.

Things can get a bit wild, I know, but that’s how we party in the Northeast. The gifts are usually inexpensive — less than $50.

Concentrate on buying a practical gift that will make a dog more comfortable or happy. A box of treats, a raincoat or sweater, spare booties, a collar and leash, a chew toy or feeding bowl, or a stylish item like a bandanna or a bow tie. If your dog likes or needs something, then your friends’ dogs are almost certain to like or need the same thing.

And, since people rarely end up with exactly what they want at a Yankee swap, save a few dollars to buy something you think your dog will really like after the party.

Nancy Pelosi said she undertook impeachment “prayerfully,” and apparently what she was praying was that she could get it over with as soon as possible.

The House is preparing to send a flagrantly incomplete factual record to the Senate as the basis of an effort to remove a sitting president for the first time in our history.

Pelosi has affected a posture of heavyheartedness since the outset of the process, saying that “there’s no joy in this” and urging a somber spirit as Democrats pursue the facts wherever they may take them — so long as that’s not too far into an election year.

In substantive terms, the Democrats had a good set of public hearings before Adam Schiff’s intelligence committee in recent weeks — with one gaping hole. They didn’t have anyone with firsthand knowledge of Trump’s directives on Ukraine or his state of mind. The closest was EU ambassador Gordon Sondland, who, still, could only “presume” a quid pro quo over the defense aid.

There are people who probably don’t have to presume, and Sondland named some of them: Trump’s personal counsel Rudy Giuliani, acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. They all were closer to this than Sondland, yet Democrats are happy to make the guy from the outer bounds of the inner circle their “star witness” and forgo the inner circle. To get the more central witnesses requires litigation since they all have at least colorable claims of privilege. The Democrats don’t want to wait for the courts.

The minimum requirement of a historic impeachment case, only the fourth in our history, would seem to be a complete

account of the facts. Schiff used to say as much: “We have to flesh out all of the facts for the American people. The seriousness of the matter and the danger to our country demands nothing less.”

Now, the seriousness and the danger are demanding that Democrats rush things along so the president can be impeached by the end of the year.

No matter how often Democrats say, “Let’s honor the Constitution,” their actions say, “Let’s check the box.”

Democrats have had the difficulty from the beginning of trying to build an edifice of impeachment and removal atop the narrow foundation of the Ukraine episode, and now they aren’t even going to finish the edifice, content with what they could complete in a two-month investigation largely reliant on the testimony of people who weren’t around for the main events (former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch) or were out of the loop (former Trump Russia adviser Fiona Hill).

With every day that passes it becomes a little more absurd to say Trump should be impeached and removed when the public can make its own verdict in the election. Besides, Democrats know that impeachment is going nowhere in the Senate, so why bother locking down the case to make it worthy of the gravity of the process?

They might as well go with what they have, a partisan impeachment pursued on a political timetable. During Bill Clinton’s impeachment, it was his defenders who were saying, “Let’s move on.” Now, it’s Trump’s pursuers, who prayerfully and sorrowfully want to get impeachment over with.

Holiday cookie party

By AngelA SHelf medeARiS KitcHeN diVa I love cookies all year-round, but I especially love all the wonderful varieties of holiday cookies at Christmastime! Hosting family and friends for a cookie exchange party is a wonderful way to start or continue a holiday tradition. A cookie exchange is a great way to host a party and get a variety of baked goods and some new recipes with the least amount of expense.

This party is a wonderful way to collect the personal stories behind the cookies.

Sharing stories also acts as an ice-breaker and a way for guests to get to know each other.

You also can host a cookie “bake and exchange” party. Since everyone is so busy, buying good quality cookie mixes and having the guests come over to stir them up, bake and decorate them can become a party activity.

Here are a few tips for hosting a cookie party exchange: * Invite eight to 12 people for the best variety of cookies and conversation. I suggest each person bring three to four-dozen cookies, two dozen to exchange and one or two dozen for the sample plate. Suggest that they wrap each dozen that they are bringing separately. * Avoid duplication of cookies/recipes by sending out invites a few weeks ahead of time, asking guests to RSVP and tell you about the cookies they plan to bring, and reminding them to bring an empty takehome container. * Ask each guest to bring a copy of their recipe to pass around with a little information about the connection to the cookie.

Having a list of the ingredients also ensures that people with food allergies can protect their health. Keep each recipe on its own plate.

* Create a separate sample cookie and exchange cookie area — either ends of a table or on separate small tables — that provides easy access to the treats from all sides.

Here’s a wonderful recipe for a basic sugar cookie dough that makes three to four dozen cookies. Use your favorite topping and filling to create your own signature cookie.

BASIC SUGAR COOKIE DOUGH This cookie dough can be made three days ahead, wrapped tightly and chilled, or frozen for up to three months. The cookies also can be baked (left undecorated) two weeks ahead, wrapped tightly and frozen.

You can use the roll-and-cut-out cookies and sprinkle sugar, chopped nuts, mini chocolate chips, chopped candy canes, etc. on top. Use the slice-and-bake cookie variation to make sandwich cookies using Nutella, nut butters or jams as a filling. Or you can use a different topping or sandwich filling for each dozen.

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks), at room temperature 1 cup granulated sugar 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract In a medium bowl, whisk flour, salt and baking soda together. In a separate bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the butter and sugar until well-combined and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add egg and vanilla and beat until just combined. Reduce speed to low and gradually blend in the flour mixture; mix until just combined.

For roll-and-cut cookies: 1. Form dough into two equal-sized balls

and flatten into discs. Wrap both in plastic and chill at least 1 hour.

2. Position oven racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven and heat to 350 F. 3. Prepare a well-floured surface and a well-floured rolling pin to help keep the dough from sticking. Working with one disc at a time, roll dough to 1/4 inch thick. Cut out as many cookies as possible with cookie cutters (if dough becomes too soft, chill until firm). Arrange cookies 1 1/2 inches apart on two ungreased baking sheets and chill 15 minutes. Gather scraps, form into a small disc, and chill until firm.

4. Bake cookies until golden brown at edges (rotating baking sheets and switching position on racks halfway through), 16 to 18 minutes.

Transfer to cooling racks to cool completely.

5. Roll out the second disc of dough and scraps (reroll scraps only once) and bake on cooled baking sheets. Transfer to racks to cool completely. Decorate, if desired.

For slice-and-bake cookies: 1. Halve dough and form into two logs, 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Wrap logs in plastic and roll to form a more uniform round shape. Chill at least 2 hours.

Slice cookies into 1/4-inch-thick rounds and arrange 1 1/2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets. Shingles vaccine causes severe side effects By keitH RoACH, m.d. to your good HealtH DEAR DR. ROACH: I received the first dose of Shingrix this week and had pretty severe side effects, though in the range of what can be expected: high fever (101.5), intense shivering, a severe headache and 12 hours of extreme fatigue.

The entire reaction began 11 hours after the shot and

ended 18 hours after that.

I am 61 and in excellent health, taking only 25 mcg of levothyroxine daily.

I have a few questions that I hope you can answer. I’ve tried looking at the clinical trial results for Shingrix, but I am not qualified to understand the information as presented.

1. Is it likely that I’ll have a similar (or worse?) reaction to the second shot?

The package insert says one can react to the first, second, neither or both.

2. Are both injections identical?

3. When I had chickenpox as a child, I was way sicker than the average kid.
