The power of a few to make a difference By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com Contemplating widespread needs that have arisen from businesses closing and jobs suspended or lost due to the pandemic, three friends in Forestdale North decided to organize a mini food drive before Thanksgiving. They wanted to keep it small enough to be manageable and thought anything collected would be helpful. “We felt there may be some people who were not part of an organized group through which they could donate and that this food drive would be a way for them to help others,” said Alisann Marshall, who along with Lynda Thompson and Nancy Hudson spearheaded the food drive. Husbands Gary Thomp-

son and Charlie Hudson also helped with the event. The women put flyers and small bags to hold items on doors of about 60-70 houses along one end of Ragsdale Road, Ragsdale Court, Cloverbrook Drive, Cloverbrook Court and a few other select houses. The theme for the drive was “Let our lives be full of both thanks and giving.” The flyer noted the additional strain COVID-19 has put on local food pantries and the families they serve. With more families experiencing food insecurity and fundraising events canceled or postponed, anything collected and shared would be greatly appreciated. Donations were designated for Jamestown Elementary School, at which social worker Haileigh Autry had identified some families in need; Greensboro Urban

The flyer listed items the pantries were looking for and the email addresses of the organizers if donations needed to be picked up before the scheduled Nov. 20 date. When collecting the donations, the women

left thank you notes on the doors. Dr. Margaret Szott, a local dentist, provided over 2,000 packs of dental floss and some people left cases of food for the drive. The generosity and thoughtfulness of neighbors on these few streets, enabled

the women to deliver: • 10 bags of food to Jamestown Elementary for local families in need, • 366 pounds of food to the food pantry at Greensboro Urban Ministries, • the dental floss, approximately 14 bags of toiletries and some food to the food pantry at High Point Open Door Ministries. “Some neighbors thanked us for doing this because we made it easy by picking things up from them,” Marshall said. “Several suggested we start this as a yearly tradition.” “I was amazed at everyone’s encouragement. Someone at one house even wrote us a thank you note for doing it,” Lynda Thompson said. “We collected more than I could imagine.” “Personally, I find it a little inspiring that even something small and unaf-

filiated with an organized group can add up,” Marshall added. “The pantries and school were thankful and so were we. “Many in our community are bearing the effects of job loss and at least six families on our streets are grieving the loss of family members this year. It was also just days after a heated election so it was a bit healing and heartwarming to see this response.” When another area neighborhood learned about the success of the mini food drive, people there began thinking of doing the same thing. Although the holidays often create a mindset of giving, the needs of many are consistent. Another way to help is by donating washcloths and towels to Open Door Ministries in High Point for the men who stay at their shelter.

council to meet Dec. 15 By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com

As is typical for the December Jamestown Town Council meeting, the agenda is fairly short. Under old business, the Council will consider appointments to members of the AARP Communities Committee. Also under consideration is the approval of the job description of a new position to assist both the town planner and public services director. The Council is expected to set a date in January for a public hearing for the rezoning request for the Johnson property at 2221 Guilford College Road, 2207 Guilford College Road, 5300 Mackay Road and 5303 Mackay Road from Agricultural (AG) to Planned Unit

Business owner suffers setback from pandemic and injury By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com During recent shutdowns due to the coronavirus, few have felt the hit harder than small businesses. The Blue House Bakery in Jamestown is no exception. This family-owned business, whose heart and soul is Bridgid Murphy, has faced closure, then reduced days and hours. That was not the worse thing to happen to Murphy, however. On Nov. 30, Murphy suffered a severe break to her left leg and ankle and was rushed by ambulance to a hospital emergency room. During a followup visit to an orthopedist she learned she must have surgery that includes pins and plates to repair the break and extensive therapy to improve her ability to walk. So the bakery is closed once more. “Being closed due to this sudden injury during their busiest time of year is devastating,”

said Murphy’s sister Molly Stillman. Because of rising health-care premiums, the Murphy family has no insurance to help offset her medical expenses. Stillman, has set up an Internet fundraiser to assist with expenses incurred from the accident. “Bridgid, Bob, and my nephew Kyle do so much for others,” Stillman said. “They are quick to lend a helping hand and are involved in the local schools and the community – always ready to give back, serve, and love on those around them. Now is the time we can return the favor and surrounded the family with much needed love and financial support.” “This beautiful business has become a big part of Jamestown,” said John Capes, a town council member. “We always encourage people to shop local, but now we hope they will donate to this local family to help with Bridgid’s medical expenses.” Capes, who is a member of

the Jamestown Christmas on Main committee, is using that group’s Facebook page to let the community know what has happened to Murphy and how people can help. “Christmas on Main is about unity in the town and helping the Murphys easily dovetails into that,” Capes said. “Helping them is like taking care of a member of the family.” Until Murphy can get back on her feet and the bakery can once more open for business the family could use all the emotional and financial help it can get. Donations may be made at https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-murphy-familymedical-fund or by mailing a check made out to Bridgid Murphy and designated for medical expenses to The Blue House Bakery, 113 East Main Street, Jamestown, NC 27282. “Any amount is helpful,” Stillman said. As of the date of this writing, over $7,500 has been raised out of a goal of $40,000.

important change to santa’s location during christmas on main By NORMA B. dENNIS FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com The Santa Drive-thru sponsored by the Jamestown Rotary Club has been moved to in front of the Jamestown Town Hall. The event is part of Christmas on Main to be held Dec. 12. Drivers should enter from Teague Drive and exit onto Guilford Road. Law enforcement personnel will be on hand to direct traffic at both ends of the driveway. Santa and his helpers from Jamestown Rotary Club will be on hand from 4-7 p.m. to accept donations of canned or non-perishable food or monetary contributions for Feeding Lisa’s Kids. They also will pass out candy to the kids after they drive by and wave to Santa.

At dusk, luminaries will line Main Street from Jamestown United Methodist Church to the Jamestown Public Library. Anyone who could help either set out, light or pick up the luminaries for the event can contact Jamie Hall-Erath at 336-577-0401 (leave a message and she will return your call) or Susan Stringer at 336-883-7627. Mendenhall Homeplace, across from the entrance to the City Lake Park, will feature tours of the Richard Mendenhall house from 6-8 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are greatly appreciated. Masks are required inside the home. Businesses will be decorated and open with limited occupancy and statewide health and safety restrictions.

No Planning board meeting in December

After several months of meetings every two weeks or so to discuss the plans for the Johnson property, the Jamestown Planning Board will not meet Dec. 14 due to there being no items on the agenda. The next regularly scheduled meeting is Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center. A discussion topic expected to be the new law, Chapter 160D of the N.C. General

Pandemic leads to talking – to myself

By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com

I don’t know about you, but all this staying at home during the pandemic is making me talk out loud to myself and to other things, many which are inanimate, a lot more. I’ve always talked to my Calico cat Jingles, my car and my over-40-year-old teddy bear Quimby, but last week I found myself talking to the salad dressing shelves at Harris Teeter, deciding which was better. Anyone shopping near me either thought I was on Bluetooth phone – or nuts. Come to think of it, they might be considered the same thing. Of course, I talk to other drivers on the road but they can’t hear me. Sometimes that’s a good thing. I drive a Jeep and always seem to park near another one or two, so I point out to my Jeep that he can say “Hi” to his family while I shop. On trips, I praise Jeep for passing, going up a steep hill or avoiding an accident. It’s good to praise your vehicle. Since I live with Jingles, I’ve taken to repeating what she says back to her. Often, she’ll repeat it again and so

do I. Guess she’s questioning if I really mean what I’ve said but usually I have no idea what either of us are saying. However, these days when I come home, I usually say “Hi” to all, but a couple of times recently, I looked around and neither Jingles or Quimby were there and I was just talking to air. “Talking to ourselves is completely within the norm. In fact, we talk to ourselves constantly,” said Dr. Jessica Nicolosi, a clinical psychologist based in New York in an interview with the “Today” show. “One can argue that just thinking things through quietly, without speaking out loud, is talking to ourselves.” Actors, speechmakers and others go over their presentations in advance, often orally. “Self-talk is a normal part of the development of language,” said Dr. Julia Harper, an occupational therapist and life coach. “[It improves our] higher order cognitive and meta-cognitive skills and is a fundamental part of self-mastery. Because of its functionality, not only do we all self-talk, it would behoove us to do it well. “If we’re talking to ourselves negatively, research

suggests that we’ll more likely guide ourselves to a negative outcome,” she added. “However, when self-talk is neutral – as in a statement like ‘What do I need to do?’ or positive, such as ‘I can get this done’ – then the outcome is much more effective.” Not only is talking to yourself out loud perfectly normal, it’s actually beneficial in a variety of ways — as well as potentially being “a sign of high cognitive functioning,” according to Paloma Mari-Beffa, PhD, a neuropsychologist and cognitive psychologist who has researched the phenomenon of self-talk. Science backs up the fact that talking to yourself is OK and goes so far to say that people who talk to themselves are geniuses. I don’t know if that applies to everyone. Reasoning out a situation or making a to-do list out loud helps organize thoughts and often leads to a quick resolution. And if you’re trying to learn something, talking about it out loud or reading passages from a book usually lead to a better understanding. I’d like to say I have stimulating conversations

Jingles and Santa Bear Quimby usually get the brunt of my talking out loud to myself at home. Jingles might even reply. with myself, but I’m not really a good listener. The experts say, however, you’ll learn something if you listen to what you have to say. You can avoid talking out loud by having a piece of hard candy or chewing gum handy. Or sip on a drink whenever you feel called upon to say something to yourself. I think I’d do well with the questions on “Jeopardy” but would get kicked off the show because I would

reassure one and all that you’ll be there for them.

They gave us lots of love, and faith in God, and in the future, no matter how bleak things might look in the present. The Bible says that faith is “a gift of God.” I believe that. It would take a God to create something as wonderful and as life-sustaining as faith. It takes great faith to carry on during all the troubles we’ve all faced day in and day out his year. The wonderful thing about faith is that the more you use it, the more it grows. Unlike earthly things which become worn and depleted when used time after time, faith becomes even stronger and more abundant the more that you use it. I often hear about people “losing faith.” If you feel like that, all I can say is that lost things are often found in the most unexpected places at the most unexpected times. I’ve misplaced things, thinking that they were lost, only to find them when I was looking for something else. The thing I’d thought I’d lost was there all the time, waiting for me to discover it and use it again. Faith is like that, sometimes when you think you’ve reached the end of your ability to believe, something or someone comes along to shore you up so that you can continue. I have great faith in the future and the abilities of the American people to preserve in these difficult times. We must love and speak lovingly about our country. A thing that is not loved will not grow properly. We must have faith in our personal abilities and in our potential as a people to grow stronger together. We must never forget the faith of our forefathers and what this country was built on. While the holidays pose their own special set of personal and financial challenges, it’s

also a time to appreciate and treasure the priceless things in our lives — love, faith, family and friends. No matter what your circumstances, hold on to hope, preserve and cherish your family’s heritage, memories and recipes. And most importantly in these difficult times, keep the faith. While I have wonderful memories of the dishes that my mother made for Christmas, this year, I’ve decided to start a holiday tradition of my own. I call this recipe Christmas Chicken because it’s a beautiful holiday dish with lots of colorful red tomatoes, white pasta and green basil or parsley. It’s also inexpensive, simple to make, and can be doubled to easily feed a crowd. I look forward to sharing it with my family and friends for years to come. Merry Christmas, and have a blessed holiday season! CHRISTMAS CHICKEN 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, chicken thighs or a combination of both 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning, divided 2 teaspoons salt, divided 2 teaspoons ground black pepper, divided 3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 cup all-purpose flour 8 ounces penne pasta 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 stick butter 1 large yellow onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 (28-ounce) can Cento or San Marzano crushed tomatoes 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves or nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon sugar 1 cup fresh flat-leaf parsley or basil, cut into ribbons 1/2 cup grated Parmesan or Romano cheese 1. Cover chicken breasts with plastic wrap and pound each piece to an even thickness, about 1 inch in the thickest parts. Remove the plastic and sprinkle each piece of chicken on both sides with 1 tablespoon

of the poultry season, 1 teaspoon each of the salt and 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper, and 1/8 teaspoon of the cayenne pepper. 2. To the flour, add 1/2 tablespoon of the poultry seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon of the black pepper, and mix well. Press the chicken into the flour on both sides, shake off the excess and set aside. 3. Make the pasta according to package directions. When the pasta is cooked, drain it but reserve 1/2 cup of the pasta water to add to the sauce. 4. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil and butter in a large heavy skillet over medium heat until sizzling, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add the seasoned chicken and pan-fry for 4 to 5 minutes on each side until golden brown. 5. Place the chicken on a plate and set aside. Add the onions to the pan and cook for 2 minutes. Add in the garlic, tomatoes, the remaining 1/2 tablespoon poultry seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon

pepper and 1/2 tablespoon cayenne, and the cloves or nutmeg and sugar. Turn heat to simmer, and cook to a sauce-like mixture, about 5-7 minutes. Add the reserved pasta cooking water as needed if the sauce is too thick. 6. Cut the chicken into strips and add it to the sauce. Stir in half of the parsley or basil. Top the drained pasta with the sauce and stir to combine over medium heat for about 1 to 2 minutes. To serve, sprinkle the pasta with the remaining parsley or basil and the grated cheese. Serves 4 to 6.
