COMPILEd By NORMA B. dENNIS CHOICE BOOK SALE The Corner Book Shop at the Jamestown Public Library has seen no activity in almost a year. Normally, Friends of the Jamestown Library use the little shop in the basement of the library to sell used and like-new books to raise funds to further enhance the library’s growing collection. A variety of nonfiction and fiction books found there offers readers an opportunity to purchase books for their personal libraries at discounted prices. Since the library building is still closed to walk-in traffic, Friends of the Library have created a special sale of choice books – hardback copies published between 2018-2020. Each book is $5, cash or check only. The sale ends April 15. To receive a list of the choice books for sale, contact Victoria at 813-8339221 or vapanzer9@gmail.com. To purchase a book, contact Jenny at 336-706-5937 or gmn4010@gmail. com. Pick-up of books will be arranged individually. When getting books, you also will have the opportunity to view and purchase puzzles to help fill those winter hours. Tell family and friends so they can take advantage of this super book sale also.

Flaco and Ze Clownettes determined to share joy For more than 20 years, Flaco & Ze Clownettes have taken their own brand of humor to hospitals, retirement centers, schools, churches and festivals. Participants have changed throughout time, but the mission of the group has remained constant – to share joy with all who watch the performances. “When I first realized how much I enjoyed clowning, I wanted to provide an outlet for my elementary school students to learn clowning skills and perform within the community,” said Ned McMillan, a.k.a. Flaco. He created the clown troupe Flaco & Ze

Clownettes with fifth graders, but gradually changed the dimension of the group to include other ages. Although most of this year’s Clownettes are third and fourth graders, participants now range from first10th grade. Retirement as a teacher a few years ago did not mean his retirement as a clown and McMillan has continued the group. “It is hard work, but also a lot of fun,” he said. Last spring, Covid-19 brought a halt to the clown troupe’s in-person appearances, but it continued to entertain by participating in walk-around performances outside the windows of retirement home residents – waving, juggling, dancing and holding up signs of encouragement. But McMillan and

co-director Joey Rudzinski (Just Joey), a graduate of Ringling Brothers Clown College and professional entertainer who joined the group in 2016, knew that colder winter weather would not be conducive to such outdoor performances the following school year. “Our clown council met in August and decided to plan the new show as usual, then figure out how to do it,” McMillan said. “We knew if we took a year off, it would damage the prospects for the future of the club.” Rudzinski suggested using Zoom to conduct practices and create a video that could be shared to continue the group’s mission. Confirmation for the idea came when Joy Callaman, activities director at Brookdale Skeet Club

rezoning, annexation again on Council agenda By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com The Jamestown Town Council will have its second opportunity to discuss the rezoning request for the Johnson property during a public hearing at 6 p.m. Feb. 16 in the Civic Center at Town Hall. The request is to change nearly 467 acres at 2207 and 2221 Guilford College Road and 5300 and 5303 Mackay Road from Agricultural (AG) to Planned Unit Development (PUD) for residential housing development with some commercial buildings. The Council heard from Amanda Hodierne, attorney for developer Diamondback Investment Group in January. At that time, Hodierne recapped what had transpired with the Planning Board’s hearings on the subject, saying she felt the Jamestown Planning Board meetings, held from July to November, got off track, with the Board requesting items that should not have fallen into a rezoning request, but rather got ahead of the

game and focused on details first without having a framework. “We didn’t get where we needed to be,” Hodierne said in January. “At the end of the day, we were not on the same page.” The Planning Board rejected the rezoning application at its November meeting after several months of discussion. Hodierne’s presentation and Council discussion in January took approximately half of the nearly three-hour meeting. To a member, the Council believes the main problem is density, or the number of residential units planned for the property. The public was informed about the proposed development at two neighborhood meetings held at GTCC Feb. 13, 2020, almost exactly one year ago. Also on the Council’s agenda is an annexation request for the same property. This also was brought up in January but saw only a few minutes of discussion before the public hearing on the annexation was postponed until the February meeting. SEE COUNCIL, PAGe 2

retirement home where Flaco & Ze Clownettes had previously performed, asked if the group would make a video that she could show the residents. With permission from the principal, two clown club parents helped set up the Zoom program on equipment in the media center at Haynes-Inman Education Center. Handling a gallery of participants that could include from 15 to 17 frames then became a trial and error study for McMillan. “I am amazed how patient and cooperative the Clownettes have been,” McMillan said. “But if I mess up, they let me know it,” he added with a chuckle. Need help with almost anything? Call 211. By CAROL BROOKS FreeLANCe WrIter cab1hp@gmail.com We’re all familiar with 911. It’s the number we call if there is an emergency. It’s also remembered as one of the worst, if not the worst, tragedy to occur in the United States. But NC 211 has a different story. When someone looking for aid calls NC 211, the United Way-sponsored program “connects people of all ages and from all communities to the essential health and human services they need, 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” according to the website. By contacting 211 by a toll-free phone call or computer at www.211.org, those needing help can find information on a variety of topics,

like supplemental food and nutrition programs, shelter and housing options, utilities assistance, emergency information and disaster relief, employment and education opportunities, services for veterans, health care and vaccination and epidemic information (like Covid-19), addition prevention and rehabilitation programs, re-entry help for ex-offenders, support groups for individuals with mental illnesses or special needs, and a safe, confidential path out of physical and/or emotional domestic abuse.

Literary League announces scholarship winner By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com The High Point Literary League recently named Nicole Prince, a student at High Point University, as the recipient of its 2020-2021 High Point Literary League Scholarship. The League’s annual fall luncheon, at which a scholarship winner is usually named, was cancelled due to Covid-19, so the announcement was delayed. “We decided to postpone naming the scholarship recipient,” said Jeannette Langley, the group’s president. “We thought presenting it now would be a good way to start off the new year.” Prince is excited to have been selected for the scholarship. “I am grateful for it and to be at a school where I feel so grounded,” Prince said. “I’m thankful to members of the English and French departments who have been my biggest advocates and gone over and above to support me. It is humbling that people recognize my work and work ethic.” Prince, who hopes to graduate from High Point University in 2022 with degrees in English, French and biology, wears many hats on campus besides that of student. “I do a lot,” Prince said. “Not

For years, the High Point Literary League has hosted well-known authors at a luncheon each fall and spring. The coronavirus pandemic, however, has interrupted this tradition. “We had authors lined up for the next two years,” said Jeannette Langley, the League’s president. “Now Emily Rogers, who is in charge of our programs, has had the job of cancelling and rescheduling our speakers.” Plans are being discussed to arrange a new date for guest author Kate Quinn, originally scheduled to speak at the Literary League luncheon in March 2021. Rachel Kadish and Jessica Shattuck have been rescheduled for Sept. 22, 2021, and Kristy Woodson Harvey will attend on March 16, 2022. “We try to stay connected to Literary League members by Facebook and Constant Connect,” Langley said. “We have sent out a list of all the books by the upcoming authors. “We also encourage members to suggest good books they have read or authors they enjoy. It is our goal to share something pertaining to literature each month.”

211 continued from front efforts during hurricanes Matthew and Florence as well as during the Covid19 pandemic. In 2016, during Hurricane Matthew, over 12,000 North Carolinians called 2-1-1 to get information on emergency evacuations, shelters, meal sites, water and food distributions and post-disaster

continued from front The Council also will revisit their January discussion regarding awarding nonprofit contracts to the Ragsdale YMCA and Jamestown Youth League for recreational programs. Some of the requested information was not provided in the two applications so the matter was postponed until February. The Council held a Special Meeting on Jan. 28 to discuss qualifications of candidates for town manager as well as qualifications of a prospective land use attorney. The attorney was requested by the Council in January to aid them in making a decision on the Johnson property. Since this is a personnel matter in closed session, the Council is expected to seal those minutes.

faculty member who runs it has been helpful to advise and mentor Prince in her pursuit of a career in publishing and editing. In addition to her work on the various campus publications, Prince has volunteered at the Community Writing Center, all while maintaining grades for the dean’s list. Prince’s earliest memory of writing success was winning an award for Best Short Story in her school when she was in the third grade. “An author came to school to present the award,” she said. “I did not realize until later how important this was.” As she got older, Prince’s career interests were related more to medicine. It was only after attending High Point University that she reconnected to a passion for literature and focused her career goals on the publishing industry. When not studying or writing, Prince enjoys reading, creative journaling, traveling and spending time with her four dogs. “The Literary League appreciates Dr. Virginia Leclercq and the English Department of High Point University for nominating this outstanding young woman to receive this year’s scholarship,” said Martha Jobe, chair of the scholarship committee.

show, “Not Normal,” began in September. McMillan, Rudzinski and roadies Anja Petrovic and Lejla Suvalic, former Clownettes Jewlz and Rosie respectively, meet in the media center on Wednesday afternoons to connect via Zoom with Clownettes, safely distanced in their homes. “Jewlz and Rosie are invaluable at helping with the music and scanning the screen to see if any of the Clownettes are having problems with the routines,” McMillan said. Throughout the fall, Clownettes practiced skills including such activities as making balloon art, learning dance numbers, hula hooping and telling jokes. Recently, McMillan began using the Zoom program to record each Clownette performing the routines scheduled for that day. Rudzinski makes backup recordings by focusing a camera on the large television screen. A few group acts by siblings will be recorded in Rudzinski’s Greensboro studio. Former Clownettes Danielle Cormier and Griffin Barrington (2008) and Houston Oden (2011) will make cameo appearances in the program. “The clown club is a wonderful testimony to the power of afterschool clubs,” McMillan said. “Participants develop deep relationships with one another.

Working with them reminds me of how capable these kids are. It takes a special type of kid who wants to take time to practice and perform and the cooperation of parents is tremendous.” Once all the acts are recorded, Andy Ralston-Asumendi, a friend of Rudzinski, plans to edit and narrate the program so it can be used to spread all the fun created by the enthusiastic performers. “When that is completed we need to decide how we are going to keep the Clownettes engaged,” McMillan said. “Hopefully when the kids begin school after spring break, we will be able to perform in person.”

Clown club participants Clownettes include Lydia Bennett, MacKenzie Bennett, Angela Biagioli, Anna Biagioli, Julianna Gliford, Cayden Greer, Abby Jones, Brayden Kame, Campbell Kelley, Regan Meinecke, Summer Merritt, Kennedi Opata, Lea Petrovic, Wyatt Roof, Jenna Voss, Natalie Voss, Cassie Walker and Haley Walker. Leaders are Ned McMillan, Joey Rudzinski, Lundee Amos, Gabriela Parra, Anja Petrovic, Lejla Suvalic and Rachel Biagioli.

I Heart Valentine’s Day By angela shelf medearis the kitchen diva Is chocolate a guilty treat or a great-tasting, hearthealthy indulgence? Do you use chocolate to boost your mood, or reserve it for special celebrations? Chocolate has been considered an aphrodisiac food since the time of Aztecs. It’s said to contain a substance that inflames desire and makes the beloved one more open to romance. Whatever your reason for choosing chocolate, emerging research shows there may be some health benefits to consuming certain types of chocolate. This is wonderful news for chocolate lovers and for anyone who enjoys celebrating Valentine’s Day! Unsweetened cocoa and dark chocolate appear to be healthier choices than other kinds of chocolate. Dark chocolate also is a delicious, heart-healthy choice for Valentine’s Day. Blood pressure, cardiovascular health and insulin sensitivity have all been shown to improve from the flavonoids in the cocoa bean. Other research suggests

that eating chocolate makes us feel good — something self-professed chocoholics already know. Chocolate helps reduce stress and has other positive, mood-boosting psychological effects. Chocolate also may be connected to neurotransmitters boosting mood and lowering anxiety. Research is still preliminary, so nutrition experts don’t recommend eating chocolate for those health benefits alone, but the research is something chocolate lovers will watch. So how much dark chocolate or unsweetened cocoa powder is the potential ticket to good health? None of the studies to date have determined the optimal daily serving. Many health experts are comfortable recommending daily dark chocolate in small amounts — an ounce or two daily — if it’s a food you already enjoy and can afford it in your calorie budget. Making chocolate milk with unsweetened cocoa powder (containing 82% cocoa) stirred into skim milk and sweetened with stevia — as opposed to the highly processed and sugar-sweetened version typically found on supermar-

ket shelves — is a healthy choice. In one study, chocolate-milk drinkers who used the healthy drink recipe showed marked improvement in heart health, including a boost to the “good” HDL cholesterol. Not all chocolate is created equal: The higher the cocoa content, the greater the health benefits from flavonoids, which help protect against aging and some chronic diseases. Following unsweetened cocoa powder on the list for highest percentage of cocoa is unsweetened baking chocolate and dark chocolate. Studies suggest that eating dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa improves cardiovascular health. Semisweet chocolate and milk chocolate are lower in cocoa content. A final word of caution: check the ingredients label to see where sugar is listed. The further down the list the better, because that indicates a smaller amount of sugar. Weigh the extra calories in chocolate before you spend them — and then enjoy every morsel! My recipe for Dark Chocolate Delights are bonbons that are simple to make

and the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for the health and happiness of the ones you love. Dates are a sweet and “delightful” ingredient in these dark chocolate bonbons. Dates are rich in calcium, sulfur, iron, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, copper and magnesium, which are all advantageous for health. Have a happy (and hearthealthy) Valentine’s Day!

DARK CHOCOLATE DELIGHTS 1 cup peanut butter, smooth or chunky 1 cup chopped pecans, toasted 1 cup stevia powdered sugar (see recipe below) 1 cup dates, chopped (not the prepackaged, chopped type) 1 1/2 tablespoons butter, softened, divided 1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips 1 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips 1/2 cup shredded, unsweetened coconut, optional To make sugar-free powdered sugar: 1 cup stevia (like Truvia

Baking Blend or Whole Earth Baking Blend) 1 teaspoon cornstarch Combine the stevia and cornstarch in a blender or food processor. Combine the ingredients on high until it creates the look and consistency of traditional powdered sugar. Use in the recipe as directed. Makes 1 cup. To make the BonBons: 1. Using a large bowl, combine peanut butter, pecans, stevia powdered sugar, dates and 1 tablespoon butter, and mix well. Form mixture into 1-inch balls. Set aside in refrigerator to harden, about 30 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, melt the semisweet chips in a large glass measuring cup or medium bowl in the microwave on medium power (or on defrost setting), about 2 minutes, stirring once after 1 minute, until melted and smooth. 3. Stir in remaining dark

chocolate chips and stir constantly until smooth (this cools and tempers the chocolate, setting up crystals so it will harden). Stir in the remaining 1/2 tablespoon butter to bring the chocolate to a glossy finish. 4. Dip each bonbon ball into the melted chocolate mixture and set the bonbons on wax paper or parchment paper. Sprinkle with shredded coconut, if desired. Let stand until chocolate is firm, about 15 minutes. Store tightly covered at room temperature. Makes about 32 bonbons.
